The bogies suffered from frame fractures. The vacuum exhausters gave trouble, as did the auxiliary motor, the original batteries supplied were also inadequate and soon became exhausted. The main problem with the exhausters was that they were mounted in the centre of the engine room and so had to be lifted through the roof by crane, taking 8-12 hours to change.

The onward section to Ravenswood Junction was delayed because of the complexity of building the Leaderfoot Viaduct, a massive structure of nineteen arches. Two piers immediately north of the public road gave trouble shortly after opening of the line, and strengthening work had to be carried out. In fact the NBR subscribed a further £30,000 to the Berwickshire Railway to get the line completed; this was declared to a Shareholders' Meeting of the NBR on 13 October 1865, and ratified by Parliament retrospectively in the 1866 session. Godiva was from the second crop of foals sired by the 1933 Derby winner Hyperion, the first of whose six Sires' championships in 1940 was largely due to the filly's successes. As a grand-daughter of the broodmare Simon's Shoes, Godiva came from the same branch of Thoroughbred Family 5-h which later produced the notable stallions Sadler's Wells and Nureyev. Godiva was sent into training with William Rose "Willie" Jarvis at his Egerton House stable in Newmarket, Suffolk. Godiva was a temperamental and difficult filly who often gave trouble at the starting gate, but she formed a strong bond with her teenage exercise rider Douglas Marks.

Bluebirds of this generation were renowned for reliability but rusted away in salted areas long before the engine gave trouble.

According to historian William Fraser, if as contended the Mackays are descendants of Malcolm MacHeth, 1st Earl of Ross, then it would make sense for them to be referred to as an ancient enemy of the Sutherlands, as the MacHeths gave trouble to the Scottish kings and their henchmen in the north the Earls of Sutherland.

The bell frame, however, still gave trouble and ringing ceased in 1913. In 1959 "Mr Eardley from Stoke- on-Trent ... fitted new ropes" and undertook sufficient maintenance to enable four bells to be rung. In 1968 a change ringing band was formed under the tuition of Paul Spencer, who had learned to ring at Armitage Bridge in Yorkshire, and Bill Jackson, who had learned at Dalton-in-Furness in Lancashire. In 1993, supported by Rhodes University, the bells were rehung in a new steel frame donated by Koch's Cut and Supply Steel Centre of Pinetown, Durban, with new headstocks provided by Eayre and Smith (Overseas) Ltd, now part of John Taylor & Co. The frame was designed by Dr Ray Ayres with pits for ten bells and was assembled in the tower by local labour guided by Dave Webster of Eayre and Smith and by Colin Lewis.

Three weeks after her defeat at Newmarket, Tarascon started at odds of 12/1 for the Irish 1000 Guineas at the Curragh where she again gave trouble at the start, with four stalls handlers required to force her into the stalls. Spencer settled the filly behind the leaders before switching to the outside with two and a half furlongs left to run. She was still in fifth place entering the final furlong but stayed on strongly in the closing stages to take the lead in the final strides and win by a neck from Kitza, with the Saeed bin Suroor-trained favourite La Nuite Rose two lengths back in third. After the race, Stack revealed that he had deliberately downplayed the significance of the event to the young jockey, telling him that it was "just an ordinary race and if she runs bad, there is no panic, there isn't any pressure".
