In the final game of that season (coincidentally played in Minnesota, where Modano began his pro career), Modano was saluted with a video tribute and a standing ovation, and named the game's first star, skating around the ice wearing a Minnesota North Stars jersey.

Replays however clearly showed there was no infraction. The Stars ended up winning the game, as angry fans at Rexall Place littered the ice with debris. The NHL later admitted that the call was wrong, but also fined Oilers head coach Craig MacTavish US$10,000 for his post-game comments in which he said that McGeough's call was "retarded" and that he should be suspended. During a regular season game between the Ottawa Senators and the St. Louis Blues on March 20, 2007, there were two controversial calls late in the third period that both disallowed a game-tying goal by the Blues.

The Red Wings narrowly made the playoffs for the 25th consecutive season. In the second leg against PSG, with an underperforming Barcelona down a goal, Messi came off the bench in the second half and within nine minutes helped create their game-tying goal, which allowed them to progress to the semi-finals. Still unfit, he proved ineffective during the first leg against Bayern Munich and was unable to play at all during the second, as Barcelona were defeated 7–0 on aggregate by the eventual champions. These matches gave credence to the notion of Messidependencia, Barcelona's perceived tactical and psychological dependence on their star player. Almería in March 2014 Messi continued to struggle with injury throughout 2013, eventually parting ways with his long-time personal physiotherapist.
The next year, Mogilny spent most of the season injured as he underwent major hip surgery. With the Kings, McSorley's bruising style made him a fan favorite; but he strove to improve his game beyond being primarily known as an enforcer, earning great respect around the league for his hard work ethic, his fine team play, and his articulate intelligence off the ice. In the 1992–93 NHL regular season, McSorley led all defensemen in shorthanded goals with three. The Kings reached the 1993 Stanley Cup Finals against the Montreal Canadiens, but in Game 2 with the Kings up 2–1, McSorley was caught with an illegal stick, contributing to the Canadiens game-tying goal. The Canadiens proceeded to defeat the Rangers for the Cup in five games.

Persson also showed an adept passing ability and an occasional scoring touch. This was no more apparent than during the Islanders first Stanley Cup playoff run in Game 1 of the 1980 Finals against the Philadelphia Flyers. It was late in the third period, when Persson scored the game-tying goal to force a sudden-death overtime that the Islanders won. Outdoing his regular season output of four goals, Persson scored five goals in the 1980 playoffs, and had serious consideration to become the first Swede to capture the Conn Smythe Trophy, which is awarded for MVP of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Persson was part of the first NHL team (1979-80 New York Islanders) to win a Stanley Cup with Europeans on its roster.

After returning to W Connection following his loan to FF Jaro for the 2014 Veikkausliiga, Winchester was reportedly close to reaching an agreement with FK Vojvodina of the Serbian SuperLiga. However, with FIFPro advising its players to not agree contracts with Serbian clubs due to a high risk that players would not be paid their salaries, Shahdon ultimately did not sign with the club. In late-February 2015, Winchester was invited for a trial with the Chicago Fire of Major League Soccer during the team's preseason participation in the Simple™ Invitational Tournament in Portland. During his second match, Shahdon supplied the game-tying goal in the 90th minute after receiving a pass 40 yards from goal, sprinted towards Vancouver's back line, and powered a shot to the lower right corner from the top of the penalty area.
The Penguins were without Evgeni Malkin for the first two games and Carl Hagelin for the first three, while the Capitals did not have Andre Burakovsky for the entire series. The scoring in game one started quickly, as Evgeny Kuznetsov netted a breakaway opportunity on a pass from Alexander Ovechkin just 17 seconds into the game. Ovechkin himself then doubled the lead on another quick strike, only 28 seconds into the third period. The Penguins responded with three goals in a five-minute span, with Patric Hornqvist and Jake Guentzel scoring off deflections and Sidney Crosby potting the game-tying goal. The comeback resulted in a 3–2 victory for Pittsburgh. The Capitals came back to tie the series after a convincing second game victory, with the help of a 32-save effort from Braden Holtby.
After giving up the game-winning goal to the Ottawa Senators' Rob Zamuner during Game 3 of first round of the 2000 Stanley Cup Playoffs, an irate Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Curtis Joseph charged after McGeough to argue that goaltender interference should have been called. Joseph then stumbled and bumped the referee to the ice. A misconduct penalty was called on Joseph, but he was not ejected from the game, and the NHL later decided not to suspend him. In a regular season game between the Dallas Stars and the Edmonton Oilers on November 4, 2006, with the Stars up 3-2 with 4.1 seconds left in regulation, McGeough waved off what would have been a game-tying goal by Edmonton's Ales Hemsky, ruling that Oilers' centre Shawn Horcoff had made a glove pass prior to Hemsky touching the puck.

D.C. United announced the signing of veteran MLS keeper Tally Hall to shore up their increasingly-wounded goalkeeping corps, which turned out to be a prescient move as Horton suffered a concussion during training and would not be ready in time for the next match. Still searching for their first victory of the season, D.C. instead found another draw in San Jose. Despite getting an early lead when Nyarko headed in a spectacular cross by Neagle, and seeing several miraculous saves from Worra, a mistake by Espindola late in the game quickly led to a game-tying goal by Adam Jahn. D.C. finally got its first win in 2016 when they returned home to face the Vancouver Whitecaps F.C. Espindola and Alvaro Saborio each scored a pair of goals, with the latter player's goals both assisted by Acosta late in the second half, to notch a 4-0 shutout.
After missing only three regular season games total in his first four seasons in the league, injuries began to plague Connolly's career beginning in 2003–04. During the 2004–05 NHL lockout, he played the second half of the season with SC Langnau in the Swiss Nationalliga A. In the 2006 playoffs, he recorded 11 points in 8 post-season games including the game- tying goal with 10.7 seconds left in game one of the second round series against the Ottawa Senators (which Buffalo won 7–6 in overtime).
