By 1534, the Portuguese took complete control over the Bombay Harbour. The Zamorin of Calicut challenged the Portuguese trade when Vasco da Gama refused to pay the customs levy as per the trade agreement. This resulted in two major naval wars, the first one—Battle of Cochin, was fought in 1504, and the second engagement happened four years later off Diu. Both these wars, exposed the weakness of Indian maritime power and simultaneously helped the Portuguese to gain mastery over the Indian waters.

Ali Yaji Dan Tsamiya known as Yaji I was a king and later the first Sultan of Kano, a state in what is now Northern Nigeria. Yaji I ruled from 1359 to 1385 CE. A prominent figure in the state's history, using religious revolution, Yaji was finally able to solidify his family's grasp on Kano and its sub- kingdoms after centuries of strife. Since the arrival of the first king of Kano, Bagauda in 999, there had been tension between the newly established aristocracy and the indigenous pagans of Kano. All subsequent Kano Kings engaged in feuds with the pagan population but were unable to gain mastery over them.

25 May 2008 Boulle was an engineer serving as a secret agent with the Free French in Singapore, when he was captured and subjected to two years' forced labour. He used these experiences in The Bridge over the River Kwai, about the notorious Death Railway, which became an international bestseller. Various practitioners of the contemporary Pagan religion of Wicca have drawn upon folklore involving the Wild Hunt to inspire their own rites. In their context, the leader of the Wild Hunt is the goddess Hecate. The anthropologist Susan Greenwood provided an account of one such Wild Hunt ritual performed by a modern Pagan group in Norfolk during the late 1990s, stating that they used this mythology "as a means of confronting the dark of nature as a process of initiation." Referred to as the "Wild Hunt Challenge" by those running it, it took place on Halloween and involved participants walking around a local area of woodland in the daytime, and then repeating that task as a timed competition at night, "to gain mastery over an area of Gwyn ap Nudd's hunting ground".

Abu Nasr was the son of al-Sari ibn al-Hakam, the governor of Egypt in 816 and 817–820, and he inherited that position upon the latter's death in November 820. During his governorship Egypt remained divided among the various factions that had seized control in the midst of the power vacuum created during the civil war between al-Amin and al-Ma'mun, and Abu Nasr's actual authority was mainly limited to the southern portion of the province, while much of Lower Egypt was in the hands of Ali ibn Abd al-Aziz al-Jarawi, the son of al-Sari's former rival Abd al-Aziz ibn al-Wazir al-Jarawi. Following Abu Nasr's appointment he and al- Jarawi continued their fathers' rivalry in an effort to gain mastery over the country. Two battles fought at Shatnuf and Damanhur reportedly left at least seven thousand dead and ended in losses for Abu Nasr's forces under the command of his brother Ahmad.
