According to Monáe on her Twitter page, "Q.U.E.E.N." was inspired by "private discussions between her and Erykah Badu," and "is meant to make you jam, dance, funk out and dialogue later." The band's second album, Get The Funk Out, was released in June 2001, along with the film Jagúar, the Movie, a B-movie spin off. Eyjólfur Þorleifsson then joined the band on tenor saxophone, and Jagúar toured Iceland again in the Summer of 2001, when they met Norwegian band "The Real Ones". In September 2001, Jagúar went to Sweden to open for the Swedish metal band Sator.

In February 2002, Get the Funk Out received the "Icelandic Music Award" for 2001 Album of the Year. Drummer Sigfús left the band in February 2002, was briefly replaced by Erik Qvik, and then returned in July. That March, the band went to Norway and toured alongside The Real Ones. Trombone player Samúel started adding more vocals to Jagúar's music, and the band toured Belgium and the Netherlands.

In 1987, members of The Hard Rock Miners started out busking on the streets of Vancouver, particularly on trendy Robson Street in the city's Downtown West End. Their music could be best described as eclectic. As they moved to gigs at Vancouver venues, their instrumentation included acoustic and electric guitars, banjo, fiddle, washtub bass, washboard, tambourine, harmonica, and drums amongst others. This essentially electrified bluegrass lineup played standards, including 'Pistol Packin' Mama', the Brothers Johnson's 'Get The Funk Out of My Face', Nancy Sinatra's 'These Boots Were Made For Walkin', 'Rock Island Line', 'Wasbush Cannonball' and speedy punked up and humorous versions of other country and western, funk, punk, and pop classics.

Between the two albums, both George and Louis released their aforementioned solo material and also appeared on Street Shadows, an album by keyboardist/arranger David Diggs, who had provided horn and string arrangements for Winners, Blast, and Louis' Passage. "Last Night", Streets opening track showcases George's bass-guitar playing. He previously showed his bass skills on tracks like "Teaser" from Winners and "The Great Awakening" from Blast, the same way Louis shows his guitar skills on the duo's various compositions. Also during this time, the band's song "Tomorrow" (originally an instrumental on the B-side of "Get The Funk Out Ma Face") was recorded with vocals by Tevin Campbell for Quincy Jones' Back on the Block release in 1989.

N.W.A. graffiti In the 1980s, the Paisley Underground movement was native to Los Angeles in rock music. In rap music, the seminal career of N.W.A. would later lead the development of G-Funk out of the combination of P-Funk and gangsta rap. Much internationally acclaimed hard rock has come out of Los Angeles since the 1980s, including hard rockers Van Halen from nearby Pasadena; Guns N' Roses whose critically acclaimed debut Appetite for Destruction is the best selling debut album in history; glam metal/hair metal bands like Mötley Crüe and Ratt; thrash metal acts like Metallica and Slayer. In the early '90s, many of the biggest alternative rock / alternative metal bands such as Tool, Jane's Addiction, Rage Against the Machine and Red Hot Chili Peppers hailed from the Los Angeles area.

Reviewing the album for AllMusic, Eduardo Rivadavia praised Behind Closed Doors for featuring "accessible, yet commendably earthy melodic rock nuggets", as well as crediting the band for experimenting with different styles by noting that "Thunder also embraced slightly darker vibes with memorable results ... got the funk out successfully ... and noticeably toned down over all pomp rock thresholds". Rivadavia also credited the band for "sticking to their guns" despite hard rock and heavy metal music becoming markedly less successful with the continued increase in popularity of genres such as grunge and alternative rock. In a review of the remastered edition of the album for Record Collector, William Pinfold also noted that Behind Closed Doors was released in "an awkward time for the band and traditional hard rock in general", but nonetheless praised the record as "an impressively confident and mature recording". Pinfold suggested that Behind Closed Doors is "a touch less essential" than Thunder's first two albums, but also highlighted the bonus disc for making the album "an essential purchase for many fans".
