The concept of recording textures of things is more generally called making a rubbing. What distinguishes rubbings from frottage is that rubbings are meant to reproduce the form of something being transferred, whereas frottage is usually only intended to use a general texture. Brass rubbings are created by laying a sheet of paper on top of a brass (actually called "latten" - an alloy of brass and nickel) and rubbing the paper with graphite, wax, or chalk, a process similar to rubbing a pencil over a piece of paper placed on top of a coin.

It is probably the most famous example of a series of Ernst's works that were based on diagrams of scientific instruments. The work began by creating print reproductions of these diagrams. In 2015, the historian Paul Booth drew attention to Fuckebythenavele's "opprobrious nickname". Booth argues that "there can be no doubt" that the element fuck in his name "has the sexual connotation". Max Ernst (2 April 1891 – 1 April 1976) was a German (naturalised American in 1948 and French in 1958) painter, sculptor, graphic artist, and poet. A prolific artist, Ernst was a primary pioneer of the Dada movement and surrealism. He had no formal artistic training, but his experimental attitude toward the making of art resulted in his invention of frottage—a technique that uses pencil rubbings of objects as a source of images—and grattage, an analogous technique in which paint is scraped across canvas to reveal the imprints of the objects placed beneath. He is also noted for his novels consisting of collages.

La Melia partook in the Artist in Residency program at the Art Gallery of Grande Prairie, in Grande Prairie, Alberta. The exhibition, which was produced as a product of the residency, was entitled Rust Daughters, Say It With Flowers. The show was concerning the feminine unconscious of the spaces and histories of the Peace Region of Northern Alberta. Specifically, La Melia explores the relationship of Euphemia McNaught and Evy McBryan and their impact on the historical artistic community of the region. With these histories as inspirational research for the show and artworks, La Melia produces Corduroy Road which uses the technique of frottage and rubbing to transfer the indexical history of the space into La Melia’s own practise.

Nancy Davidson grew up in Chicago and received a B.Ed. from Northeastern Illinois University, Chicago, and a B.F.A. from the University of Illinois at Chicago or UIC. She received her M.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1975 where she began her professional career, exhibiting in solo shows in 1977 and ‘78 before relocating to New York in 1979. Her early works dealt with the recorded gestures of her hand and body. In one such piece the artist employed frottage, using her bodily weight to transfer the patterns of the wooden floor underneath her to strips of paper. The resulting work was a record of touch formed by her gestures and complicated by the irregularities of the floor’s surface.

The ideal held that both partners would be inspired by love symbolized by Eros, the erastes unselfishly providing education, guidance, and appropriate gifts to his eromenos, who became his devoted pupil and assistant, while the sexuality theoretically remained short of penetrative acts and supposedly would consist primarily of the act of frottage or intercrural sex. The term was popularized by gay male activists who disparaged the practice of anal sex, but has since evolved to encompass a variety of preferences for the act, which may or may not imply particular attitudes towards other sexual activities. Owing to its non-penetrative character, frot has the safe sex advantage of minimizing the transmission risk for HIV/AIDS; however, it still carries the risk of skin-to-skin sexually transmitted infections, such as HPV and pubic lice (crabs), both of which can be transmitted even when lesions are not visible.

During this period, Brey produced works on paper referencing late-18th-century Spanish painting traditions, stylistically utilizing frottage and collage as methodologies in his drawings. Brey also worked as an educator at Casa de la Cultura, Jaruco, with fellow artist Gustavo Pérez Monzon leading outdoor drawing workshops for the institution's visitors, which primarily consisted of children and the elderly. Lesbians in their 30s were twice as likely as other age groups to engage in anal stimulation (with a finger or dildo). A 2014 study of partnered lesbian women in Canada and the U.S. found that 7% engaged in anal stimulation or penetration at least once a week; about 10% did so monthly and 70% did not at all. The modern definition of frot emerged in a context of a debate about the status of anal sex within the gay male community; some in the anti-anal, pro- frot camp insist that anal sex ought to be avoided altogether. One view argued that the popularity of anal sex would decline, presumably with a corresponding drop in HIV rates, if gay men could somehow be persuaded to stop thinking of anal sex as a "vanilla" practice, but rather as something "kinky" and not- quite-respectable—as was the case in the 1950s and 1960s, when gay men who preferred to do only mutual masturbation and fellatio sometimes used the disparaging slang term brownie queen for aficionados of anal sex.
