A mysterious black cloud appears and destroys the cable car, seemingly killing April's parents. April and Darwin later escape, and Pizoni is demoted for the disaster. The disappearances continue for ten more years. In 1941, a now-adult April continues working on the serum to save a dying Darwin, but Pizoni still obsessively hunts the Franklins, hiring a petty criminal, Julius, to tail April.
The original shopping centre known as Southside Plaza opened in 1963 on the current site. It had featured a Mark Foys, Woolworths Food Fair (rebranded to Flemings in the 1980s), Franklins supermarket and a Tenpin Bowling Centre. In 1967, the Mark Foys store was extensively damaged by fire. It was then rebuilt and became a McDowells store and then was rebranded as Waltons in 1972.

36 Isolated and battered, Blanquet's ship was soon dismasted and the admiral, suffering a severe head wound, was forced to surrender by the combined firepower of Swiftsure and Defence.Clowes, p. 367 More than half of Franklins crew had been killed or wounded. By midnight only Tonnant remained engaged, as Commodore Aristide Aubert Du Petit Thouars continued his fight with Majestic and fired on Swiftsure when the British ship moved within range.
In addition, the Franklins bought up properties around Victoria for their own ownership, including a cattle sale yard on Fort Street. One of Lumley's properties in the Seattle, Washington area became the subject of a US Supreme Court ruling in 1896: Hanford vs. Davies. Franklin did not marry or have any children, but he did have other achievements. Lumley achieved the title of Esquire and was a founding member of the Freemason lodge in Victoria.
Moruya has various retailers, banks and services located on the high street, whilst supermarkets are located on the side streets. Harris Scarfe has a store in the town, it being a former branch of Goulburn retailer Allen's. Moruya has two supermarkets, one is a 10-aisle Woolworths (opened in 2000) and an IGA (opened in 2013). The former 8-aisle Franklins, which opened on 28 June 2011, ceased trading in February 2013.
A second level of shops was added to the south end including Franklins and a fresh food court above Coles and Kmart. However, as the 21st century arrived, time had dulled the looks of the centre following redevelopments of other Westfield centres such as Westfield Southland, Fountain Gate and even Sydney's Bondi Junction. The latest revitalisation, which began in January 2007, after years of applying for a permit, saw the centre undergo a full makeover.
A plaque beside the wharf on the Halifax Waterfront Boardwalk commemorates her many rescues. The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic preserved Foundation Franklins bridge and engine room clocks as well as several models and the tug's heavy salvage tackle. Foundation Franklin was the centrepiece of a special tug exhibit which opened at the Museum in 2009 displaying many pieces of her original equipment and her original bell on loan from Svitzer Canada.
Fay (1933), The Two Franklins, p. 14. His grandfather's arrival brought more tumult to his home, as Franklin had brought with him William Temple Franklin, his 15-year-old grandson, who was the illegitimate son of William Franklin. On October 29, 1776, Franklin took his two grandsons along on his diplomatic mission to France to negotiate a firm alliance. Bache was seven when their party boarded the USS Reprisal, and sailed for France.
Drake continued to expand his chain. By 2005 he owned 27 Foodland stores in SA as well as 3 Timesavers stores, six Queensland stores, four newsagencies, a liquor outlet and a large property portfolio. This speedy expansion was enabled by the purchase of Davids and Franklins supermarkets in SA as well as the purchase of six Queensland stores between August and October 2004. In 2006, Drakes obtained the rare benefit of being exempted from WorkCover.
Around that time, he also founded the Chicago Benjamin Franklins, an association of people with the given name Benjamin Franklin; they often held events in honor of the most famous Ben Franklin. He also belonged to a number of industry associations, including the American Concrete Institute. Affleck later moved back to Winnetka, where he would remain until his death. On February 13, 1944, he died while shoveling snow off the walk outside of his home.
Residence Section and Mt. Franklin, El Paso, Texas, c. 1912 For centuries, Native Americans and other travellers have used the vegetation and wildlife in the Franklins when crossing the Paso del Norte—the gap between the Franklin Mountains and the Juarez Mountains that is now the site of Ciudad Juárez and El Paso. Pictographs and mortar pits attest to a human presence in the mountains dating back more than 12,000 years.Franklin Mountains State Park.
Right before the rocket launches, April douses the vegetation on the rocket with her serum, fulfilling Chimène's plan. The Franklins, Julius and the scientists join Pizoni in escaping to the surface, and witness the rocket exploding in space. A news item reveals Pizoni becoming the head of Emperor Napoleon V's security service in reward for his "work" in "foiling" the lizards' plot. A time lapse scene then shows the freed scientists rapidly advancing technology.
Bikes are usually built around a theme, such as a NASCAR- inspired bike with retro-70s chrome wheels, racing numbers, flames, and sponsor insignia reminiscent of a stock car, or a bike that takes its cues from popular films, such as Freddy Krueger of A Nightmare on Elm Street. Other common motifs in custom artwork are sexy women, skulls, bones and other gruesome figures, and money and bling, such as "Ben Franklins," $100 bills.
Asco was then acquired by Burns Philp. However, he only managed to get the quotas increased marginally. It wasn't until 1990 that the last margarine quota was abolished in Victoria. In the early 1990s, Gordon McNally caused a stir after taking out newspaper advertisements complaining that the supermarket chains Coles and Safeway had increased the retail price of Nuttelex when the wholesale price had not changed. The advertisements directed customers to buy their Nuttelex at Franklins or Jewel instead (which had not raised their prices).
Larger contracts were squeezed out to the low cost producers, but the quality custom work that Ferguson's concentrated on largely remained as this involved smaller orders and generally 'fell under the radar' of the larger producers in the low cost countries. They are a member of the Irish Linen Guild. Since 1988 it has been part of the Franklins Group of companies. Since that time the Ferguson family has no longer been involved in the business.
They finished the group third with nine points ahead of Scarlets. The guests know each other, with this gathering initiated when Sir William Boyd-Carrington invites the Franklins to join him for a summer holiday stay. The five prior murders took place in the area, among people known to this group. Elizabeth Cole tells Hastings that she is a sister of Margaret Litchfield, who confessed to the murder of their father in one of the five cases. Margaret has died in Broadmoor Asylum and Elizabeth is stigmatised by the trauma.

In the early 1970s the bank, particularly through its managing directors, Roland Franklin and Ian Stoutzker, became very active in corporate finance.
Theorizing the swarm's system may be vulnerable to high frequencies such as VHF or radio, they jam and destroy the swarm by broadcasting the song "Sabotage" by the Beastie Boys. Krall is chased by the Franklin through Yorktown. Uhura, Kirk and Scotty discover from the Franklins logs that Krall is actually Balthazar Edison, Franklin's former captain. A pre-Federation human soldier, Edison rejected the Federation's principles of unity and cooperation with former enemies like the Xindi and the Romulans.
The ship was broken up for scrap at Halifax which was completed on 4 April 1949. Her bell, bearing her original Royal Navy name Frisky, was saved from the scrapyard and used at the Foundation Wharf to summon crews to successor rescue tugs when vessels were in distress. The bell has continued to reside at offices beside the company's wharf through successive ownership changes. Today it is owned by Svitzer Canada Limited which continues to operate tugs from Foundation Franklins old wharf.

Stapleton Motte The Domesday Book of 1086 records Stapleton under the name Hundeslit. Stapleton was previously held as two manors by two Saxon franklins, Huning and Aelric and in 1086 it was divided between Roger Fitz Corbet and Alward the Saxon. It is likely that the mound near the Church may have been the site of one of the Saxon manor houses. The other manor house stood about a mile away, where the remains of the De Stapleton's house still exists.
However the development was never built further than stage one. With the purchase of Miranda Fair (now Westfield Miranda) by the Westfield Group and the opening of nearby Westfield Hurstville in 1987 saw the centre fall into a gradual decline. During the 1990s the centre lost many stores with many vacant store spaces left including Franklins (which had replaced Coles) closed. By the mid-2000s the centre was desolate with large areas vacant and the structure itself in a bad state.
Food For Less currently advertises the same as Woolworths although some products are not available at most Food For Less stores, as they were usually smaller in footprint. However, it has advertised in local newspapers for the conversion of a number of Franklins No Frills stores to Food For Less in 2001. Food For Less has also used taglines in their stores in the past such as "Food For Less Guaranteed" and "You come for the price, stay for the service".

The ghost town of Lemieux, abandoned in the early 1990s, is also located within the municipality.
By 1998, Westfield Hurstville was beginning to experience a downturn in trade. Nearby Westfield Miranda had been expanded in recent years, Roselands was redeveloped in 1992 and Westfield Burwood was proposed for demolition to be replaced by a more modern shopping centre. The building was starting to age and many stores had closed. Franklins closed in 2001 and was taken over by Food For Less in 2002 and operated until November 2015 when Woolworths opened at the other end of the centre.
Burwood Plaza first opened in 1978 on the site of Burwood's first theatre which opened in 1910. It was replaced by the Palatial Theatre which opened in 1921 and featured the first Christie pipe organ in a local theatre. The Palatial closed in 1971 and the space was used by the Royal Blind Society, then as a carpet showroom. In late 2001, the Franklins Big Fresh supermarket which had been trading since at least the early 1990s, was closed and replaced with Woolworths.
Samuel Rhoads Franklin was born August 24, 1825, in York, Pennsylvania, to Walter S. and Sarah ( Buel) Franklin. His father was Clerk of the United States House of Representatives, and his paternal great-grandfather was Samuel Rhoads, who had served in the First Continental Congress and as Mayor of Philadelphia in 1774. After living abroad for so long, he felt that Philadelphia seemed foreign.Fay (1933),The Two Franklins, p. 86. As his grandfather was starting to fade, Bache oversaw the print shop's operations, but under the older man's watchful eye. His first print job was "An Ode in Imitation of Alcaeus," a poem by the linguistic scholar William Jones, who decried England's corruption and the misuse of monarchical power. Bache's first ventures in commercial publishing were school texts, including Isaiah Thomas’ collection of writings by Aesop and Erasmus.
Franklin is a small township on the western side of the Huon River in the south-east of Tasmania, between Huonville and Geeveston. At the 2011 census, Franklin had a population of 337. It was named after Sir John Franklin and his wife Lady Jane Franklin who subdivided a large property there formerly owned by John Price to settle families of modest means. The Franklins had a ketch named Huon Pine built at Port Davey to provide a direct link between the settlement at Hobart.

Together they devised a design for such a shopping centre in Sydney. Yeoman came up with the idea of the apricot brick and the windowless building with vertical divisions, while Benjamin sketched the layout for retailing. Top Ryde was anchored by Sydney-based A.J. Benjamin & Co department store, Franklins supermarket, a chain variety store and 45 other shops grouped around a pedestrian mall, with 400 parking spaces. The centre feature modern sculpture centre which was a focal point designed by artist Gordon Andrews, a personal friend of Peter Yeoman.
After an absence of almost eleven months, Papineau returned for the Yorkshire Cup on 13 May 2005. He started the 7/2 second favourite but finished fifth to Franklins Gardens after hanging to the right in the closing stages. The "Royal Ascot" meeting of 2005 took place at York Racecourse as Ascot Racecourse was being redeveloped. Papineau was made third favourite for the Gold Cup, but never looked likely to win and was virtually pulled-up by McEvoy in the straight and finished sixteenth of the seventeen runners behind Westerner.
Stockland released a concept plan for the Glendale Super Centre in 1994. It was being developed as a US-style power centre consisting of category killer traders, where tenants traded in an open-air environment and there was no internal malls. The tenants listed in the proposal included Target, Woolworths, Franklins Big Fresh, Homeart, World 4 Kids and Best & Less, and room had been provided for about 50 specialty stores, including free-standing fast food outlets. The centre was valued at A$55.5 million on completion in March 1996.
This, together with a historically good home record, contributes to the ground also being nicknamed 'Castle Grim'. In October 2003, Gloucester Rugby launched 'Project Kingsholm'. 'The Kingsholm Supporters Mutual' (KSM) was set up by Gloucester Rugby Football Club in October 2003, to help fundraise towards 'Project Kingsholm', the redevelopment of Gloucester's entire ground at a cost of £6,000,000, and the launch of a supporters shares rights issue. The idea was to be similar to the development at Franklins Gardens, home of Northamption Saints RFC, although on a bigger scale, incorporating both seating and terracing.
Computer consultant Charles Ennis (David Brown) and his frail father (Tim Whelan) drive out from the city, begging for produce for his sickly sister (Nuala Fitzgerald): the shops in the city are empty. Suspicious at first, Grant yields after his daughter makes pleas on their behalf. The Franklins assemble a produce basket for the starving pair, off-handedly mentioning the wedding spread they are preparing for Susan the following day. Ennis and his father are waylaid by militia men who accuse them of stealing the food, confiscating it.
The Franklin Mountains of Texas (previously known as Las Sierras de los Mansos) are a small range (23 miles long, wide) that extend from El Paso, Texas north into New Mexico. The Franklins were formed due to crustal extension related to the Cenozoic Rio Grande rift. Although the present topography of the range and adjoining basins is controlled by extension during rifting in the last 10 million years, faults within the range also record deformation during the Laramide orogeny, between 85 and 45 million years ago. The highest peak is North Franklin Peak at .
As the years went by, the original Cirrus engine installation was replaced by Warner radials, inline Menascos or Fairchild-Rangers, and horizontally-opposed Lycomings, Franklins, or Continentals. Tex Rankin, a stunt pilot of the 1930s and 1940s, made the Great Lakes Sport Trainer famous. He had one specially modified and installed a 150 hp supercharged Menasco engine. It was painted red, white and blue with his name upright on one side, and upside down in the other, so folks would know who he was when he flew by upside down.
When Mr. Archer calls the justice who performed the ceremony, the man confirms that an Archer was married there months ago. Soon the Franklins are informed of their son's endeavours, and both families gather at Archer's house. Uncle George Archer, who is a Navy chaplain, insists on performing another, "proper" wedding ceremony for the young couple. The same night, Mildred hears news that Lenny has performed heroically in the war, and is coming home soon, whereupon she summons the courage to tell her family about her marriage and pregnancy.
Unbeknownst to the searchers, the Franklins' ultimately found their way to Macquarie Harbour and safety on board the government schooner Breeze. After a long wait for safe weather, the Breeze met up with the rescue ship Eliza, to which the Franklin's transferred for the trip back to Hobart. These events provided the basis of a story of Thomas Blinkhorn "rescuing" Sir John Franklin was first recorded by Captain John T. Walbran in his book, British Columbia Coast Names 1592-1906, p. 56, Vancouver Public Library, 1971, p. 56\.
Lady Jane was passionate about improving the town and colony, as was her husband. However, their liberal views were not well received by many members of Hobart Town's civil service, and civilians who benefited from exploiting convict labour did not appreciate their humane views. Despite this, the Franklins did much to reform Hobart Town society and the colony of Van Diemen's Land in general. Lady Jane Franklin ordered built a replica Greek temple, modelled on the Parthenon and designed by James Blackburn in the bush in Lenah Valley, which opened in 1841.
In April 2000, Target and David Jones launched their extensions with the addition of Food For Less & Bi-Lo replacing Franklins as it moves to Castle Mall and a further 76 stores. In August 2001, the final stage of the centre opened including a two level Grace Bros (now Myer) and 34 upmarket fashion retailers. In January 2007, Food For Less was replaced by Dan Murphy's. In June 2009, Greater Union opened its premium five screen cinema complex as "EVENT Cinemas" which replaces six old screens built in 1993.
Home matches began in Abbey fields, next door to Franklin's Gardens and it wasn't until the late 1880s when the Saints moved to Franklin's Gardens. At the end of the 1896/97 season a new stand was built by Mr A Dunham's building company, 45 feet long and costing £45 5s. It was carpeted and reserved for members paying 10s 6d for season tickets. Ladies got away with paying only five shillings! On 9 October 1920, a two-page advertisement in the Independent appeared offering 15,000 shares in a new company, Franklins Gardens Sports and Pleasure Co Ltd.
Lady Jane attempted to establish evening gatherings to discuss art, literature and science, but these proved unpopular with well-to-do 'Hobartians', who preferred that she host parties and dances instead. Not to be outdone by his wife, Lieutenant-Governor Franklin opened the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery a year later in October 1843. In 1844 he also founded the Royal Society of Tasmania, the first such Royal Society outside of the United Kingdom. The enlightened governorship of the Franklins brought much social and cultural improvement to Hobart Town, and culminated in the town's incorporation as a city in 1842.
At completion, Australia Fair Shopping Centre had the largest concentration of specialty stores and was the only shopping centre in the Gold Coast let alone nation with three supermarket chains at the time: Woolworths, Coles and Franklins. 1991: The 52,000 square metre shopping development is the first of its kind in Australia and one of the largest in Queensland. 1993: An extension introduced the centre to a six-cinema complex and also created a Leisure Court Retail precinct. ;1995: The Fashion Boulevard, Broadwater Food Court and Fresh Food Marketplace were refurbished and renamed to establish these precincts.
Warringah Mall opened on 4 April 1963 and was developed by Hammerson Group and was the second largest shopping centre at the time with Chadstone Shopping Centre being the largest. The centre was partially built on the site of 'Brookvale House' which was built by Sydney Alexander Malcolm in 1883 was sold in 1961 to the Hooker Investment Corporation (now LJ Hooker). Many Franklins have been damaged by "roll friction": the tendency of pieces in a loose coin roll to rub together repeatedly, causing steel-gray abrasions, usually on Franklin's cheek and on the center of the Liberty Bell. By mintages, the key dates in this series are the 1948, 1949-S, 1953 and 1955. Franklin half dollars have been extensively melted for their silver, and many dates are rarer than the mintage figures indicate. For example, although more than nine million 1962 halves were struck for circulation, and an additional three million in proof, the coin was more valuable as bullion than in any condition when silver prices reached record levels in 1979–1980.
Manors were defined as an area of land and became closely associated to the advowson of the church; often by default the advowson was appended to the rights of the Manor, sometimes separated into moieties.A digest of the laws of England respecting real property, Volume 5 page 3 item 8Lord and peasant in nineteenth century Britain, London : Croom Helm; Totowa, N.J. : Rowman and Littlefield, 1980. Chapter 1 from page 15 & 16 Many lords of the manor were known as squires, at a time when land ownership was the basis of power. While some inhabitants were serfs who were bound to the land, others were freeholders, often known as franklins, who were free from customary services.
Westfield Chatswood opened on 30 January 1986 and is the second major shopping centre to be built in Chatswood with the first being Chatswood Chase in 1983 and Wallace Way and Lemon Grove in the 1980s. The centre was located next to the free standing Grace Bros store that opened in 1961 and featured Target (which was originally located at Wallace Way until 1986), Coles New World and Franklins (closed 2001 and renamed Food For Less). In 1999 it was redeveloped to incorporate a previously free standing Grace Bros store (later renamed Myer in 2004) and Toys "R" Us was added. In 2008 Aldi opened its store on the space vacated by Food For Less.
A sequence in The Saga of the Franklin showing the ship's chaplain, Lieutenant Commander Joseph T. O'Callahan, wearing a steel helmet while administering the last rites to a dying sailor, is one of the most enduring images of World War II in the Pacific. Both O'Callahan and Lieutenant JG Donald A. Gary, were awarded the Medal of Honor for their actions on the USS Franklin.Springer 2007, p. 317. Not only was the story of the USS Franklins near-destruction and salvage chronicled in a silent, six-minute black and white newsreel, Bombing of U.S.S. Franklin (1945) distributed by Castle Films, but also was featured later in the documentary, USS Franklin: Honor Restored (2011).
Westfield Eastgardens opened on 19 October 1987 and was the largest shopping centre in Australia for a short period until Chadstone Shopping Centre in Melbourne was redeveloped. When the centre opened, it had David Jones, Super Kmart, Target, Franklins, a 6-screen Hoyts cinema as well as 180 other retailers. The Super Kmart hypermarket combined a discount department store (Kmart) and supermarket (Coles) under one roof until the store was split in 1989 into today's Coles and Kmart stores. The centre was redeveloped in 2002, with a new supermarket (Woolworths), discount department store (Big W) and brought the total amount of retailers to 290 with parking for 3,260 cars and the upgrade of Hoyts.
Through the years, the Franklins have worked with many highly respected and widely acclaimed Christian leaders and prominent musicians, the late Billy Graham, and the late Dr Adrian Rogers, Dr. Jack Hayford, Jim Cymbala and The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, Focus on the Family, Family Research Council, Bill & Gloria Gaither, Don & Tim Wildmon of American Family Association, and many more. From 1992 to 1994, while still singing with Barbi, Terry sang tenor with the Gaither Vocal Band for two years during the group's transition. He sang on two of their albums: Peace of the Rock and Southern Classics, both released in 1993. The title song of Peace of the Rock reached # 1 on the CCM Adult Contemporary chart in May 1993, where it remained for two weeks.
The figure was already there. All that was required was order. It was all there, the conceptual and the technical – the raw and primal qualities of John in the desert reflected through nature’s brutalization of man’s objects". Voice in the Wilderness, a welded iron rod 7-foot figure received the George D. Widener Gold medal at the Pennsylvania Academy Annual in 1958. A year later, Pieta exhibited at the eighth Boston Arts Festival received acclaim as articulated by The New York Times critic Stuart Preston: “This year’s Grand Prize in art was awarded to ... Gilbert Franklins’ Beach Figure ... but it must have been a close thing deciding between it and Kahlil Gibran's noble and expressive Pieta".Stuart Preston, “Summer Art Activity In Boston”, New York Times (June 14, 1959) p.
Venture closed in 1991 and the centre went a minor development with the opening of a Target store and the re-organisation of the shops into service areas such as banking to the south-west of the mall and the food court which contained McDonald's on the lower concourse. With the opening of Macquarie Centre in 1981 and the continual growth of centres such as Westfield Hornsby, Westfield Parramatta, Birkenhead Point Outlet Centre and most recently the opening Rhodes Shopping Centre in 2004 has severely affected the retail trade of Top Ryde. The centre lost a lot of stores including Target which closed around 2005–2006. Towards the end of the centre's life, it was almost a dead mall featuring Woolworths, Franklins, a bowling alley and around 90 stores which were predominantly banks and service stores. The centre was situated over 2 floors.
What this miserly lifestyle and ill-kept property hid was eventually to bring $2.18 million at auction in 1996. The 87-year-old A.K. Miller himself died in 1993 after falling from a ladder, and Imogene died of a heart attack in 1996. As no heirs were found, the IRS moved in to assess the value of the estate (taking a particular interest in collecting the years of back taxes the Millers had owed)."A.K. Miller's Amazing Stutz Stash," Automobile Quarterly, Vol.36 #3 All told, approximately 30 original Stutz motorcars, a Stanley Steamer, a 1926 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost, several Franklins, a Volkswagen Karmann Ghia (which had somehow been placed in the loft of the main barn),"Miller Auto Trove Exceeds Wildest Expectations; Brings $2.18 Mil," Maine Antique Digest, October 1996 and assorted VW Beetles were discovered about the property.
Friar Camilo Henríquez Friar José Camilo Henríquez González (; July 29, 1769 in Valdivia, Chile - March 16, 1825 in Santiago de Chile) was a priest, author, politician, and is considered an intellectual antecedent to and founding father of the Republic of Chile for his passionate leadership and influential writings. In 1922, Counsellor of the Chilean Embassy in the United States, Carlos Castro Ruiz (later Treasury Minister), noted that Henríquez "appears as the spirit of political freedom when many a secular colonist was still vacillating in breaking off his allegiance to the Spanish king" and "Camilo Henríquez and Martínez de Rosas, Salas and Infante were our Paines, Jeffersons, and Franklins of the Revolution." He was also one of the most important early South American newspaper writers and wrote several essays, most notably the Proclama de Quirino Lemachez, which promoted Chilean independence and liberty. He also wrote under the pseudonym Quirino Lemachez.
President Harry Truman intervened after the resulting public outcry and the Medal of Honor was awarded to O'Callahan on January 23, 1946. Upon Franklins arrival in New York, a long-brewing controversy over the ship's crew's conduct during her struggles finally came to a head. Captain Gehres had accused many of those who had left the ship on 19 March 1945 of desertion, despite the fact that those who had jumped into the water to escape had done so to prevent a likely death by fire, or had been led to believe that "abandon ship" had been ordered. While en route from Ulithi Atoll to Hawaii, Gehres had proclaimed 704 members of the crew to be members of the "Big Ben 704 Club" for having stayed with the heavily damaged warship, but investigators in New York discovered that only about 400 were actually onboard Franklin continuously.
USS Franklin figurehead, c. 1853, by Woodbury Gerrish The ship was laid down at the Portsmouth Navy Yard in Kittery, Maine, in 1854, and built in part of materials salvaged from the previous . For a time housed over, she was launched on 17 September 1864, commissioned on 3 June 1867 at Boston, Massachusetts. Prior to her launching, Woodbury Gerrish was commissioned to build a figurehead for her. Following decommissioning the figurehead was donated to the U.S. Naval Home in Philadelphia, who then passed it onto The Franklin Institute in 1938. On 28 June 1867 sailed from New York City as flagship of Admiral David Glasgow Farragut, who assumed command of the European Squadron. Relieved by , she arrived back in New York on 10 November 1868. Franklins second tour in the European Squadron, beginning on 28 January 1869, was as flagship for Rear Admiral William Radford. She served with the squadron until 30 September 1871 when she sailed for the United States.
The U.S. Post office began using a double-line watermark bearing the initials USPS in 1895, when the Bureau of Engraving and Printing introduced it into the previously unwatermarked Bureau Triangles stamp issues. The same double-line watermark paper used then was used on the various issues leading up to and used in the production of the 1908 and 1909 versions of the Washington–Franklin issues. In 1910 the watermark was changed to a single-line watermark and with initials which were smaller in size, partly because the double-line watermark tended to weaken the sheets at the perforations causing premature separation of stamps at the Post Office, and partly because postal officials suspected that the double-line watermark caused the stamp paper to shrink unevenly when the sheets dried after printing. As the Bureau used only two types of watermarks for the Washington–Franklins, with each type bearing the initials USPS, their application is easily summarized.
Franklin received British patent 242342 in 1924 for "a pronounced directional effect from aerials of the type that are electrically long in comparison with the signal wavelength". (Patent 242342) The antenna is so physically tall (about 1,813 feet at 540 kHz, and about 612 feet at 1600 kHz) that its use is generally restricted to frequencies of 1400 kHz and above, with one example at 1500 kHz (KSTP, St. Paul, MN, non-directional, daytime only) and two examples at 1530 kHz (KFBK, Sacramento, CA, directional day and night using different parameters day and night). Pseudo-Franklins have been employed below 1400 kHz, however, to good effect, but no where near as good as a true Franklin. A true Franklin (180 over 180 degrees; 360 degrees, total) has an efficiency of about 510 mV/m/kW at 1 km. A pseudo-Franklin (180 over 120 degrees; 300 degrees, total) has an efficiency of about 470 mV/m/kW at 1 km. Another pseudo-Franklin (120 over 120 degrees; 240 degrees, total) has an efficiency of about 430 mV/m/kW at 1 km.
The definitive postage stamps of 1922, also known by collectors as the Fourth Bureau Issue, were issued in denominations ranging from ½-cent to 5-dollars with a corresponding subject and color for each. This would be the second issuance of definitive stamps released by the U.S. Post Office where the name of the subject was spelled out in print, unlike the Washington-Franklins previously issued where the respective subjects were presented in image form only. All the 1922–31 denominations between 1-cent and 15-cents were printed in colors identical—or nearly identical—to the colors used for their counterparts in the preceding Washington-Franklin series (new colors, of course, had to be chosen for the 1½-cent and 14-cent values, which had not previously been offered). Of the higher-denomination stamps, however, only the 50-cent value retained its Washington-Franklin color (the $2 stamp employed the same blue used for pre- Washington-Franklin $2 designs between 1894 and 1918). The first stamp of the Regular Issues series was issued on October 4, 1922, the 11-cent Rutherford B. Hayes stamp, which also marked the hundredth anniversary of Hayes's birth.
The United States one-hundred-dollar bill ($100) is a denomination of United States currency. The first United States Note with this value was issued in 1862 and the Federal Reserve Note version was launched in 1914, alongside other denominations. Statesman, inventor, diplomat, and American founding father Benjamin Franklin has been featured on the obverse of the bill since 1914. On the reverse of the banknote is an image of Independence Hall in Philadelphia, which has been used since 1928. The $100 bill is the largest denomination that has been printed and circulated since July 13, 1969, when the denominations of $500, $1,000, $5,000, and $10,000 were retired. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing says the average life of a $100 bill in circulation is 90 months (7.5 years) before it is replaced due to wear and tear. The bills are also commonly referred to as "Bens," "Benjamins," or "Franklins," in reference to the use of Benjamin Franklin's portrait on the denomination, as "C-Notes," based on the Roman numeral for 100, or as "blue faces," based on the blue tint of Benjamin Franklin's face in the bill's current design. The bill is one of two denominations printed today that does not feature a President of the United States; the other is the $10 bill, featuring Alexander Hamilton.
