These eggs are broken, apparently because they had hatched before fossilizing. Like other elongatoolithids, the eggs are found paired because the parents would lay two eggs at a time. Unlike modern birds, dinosaurs had two functioning oviducts, so they could produce two eggs simultaneously, as shown by a fossil oviraptorosaur discovered in China with a pair of elongatoolithid eggs preserved in its pelvis. Most, if not all, elongatoolithid nests would not have been buried by their parents.

When the egg is buried deeply enough, the bacteria decomposing it no longer have access to oxygen and need to power their metabolisms with different substances. These physiological changes in the decomposers also alter the local environment in a way that allows certain minerals to be deposited, while others remain in solution. Generally, however, a fossilizing egg's shell keeps the same calcite it had in life, which allows scientists to study its original structure millions of years after the developing dinosaur hatched or died. Due to its fragmentary nature – the bones of pseudotooth bords are very thin-walled and light and notoriously easily broken and crushed when fossilizing – it was often allied with the enigmatic Cladornis, and though placed in the order Pelecaniformes (as pseudotooth birds often were) separated in a suborder Cladornithes. But the slightly older (Late Oligocene) Cladornis from the Argentinian part of Patagonia is known from a distal right tarsometatarsus only, and thus not directly comparable to Cyphornis. The two genera were allied simply because of their size and because they both vaguely reminded of the tarsometatarsus of pelicans. Today however, Cladornis is more generally held to be a terrestrial bird rather than a seabird.
