He never established himself as a first team regular, however and he only made 21 appearances the next season and only eight the season after that. It was, however, the 2005–06 season that saw Johnson stake a claim for a regular first team spot. Johnson made around 30 appearances in total, and perhaps would have made more were it not for three suspensions (two following red cards, one following his fifth booking of the season). Johnson scored his first goal for Gillingham against Milton Keynes Dons on New Year's Eve 2005 in a 3–0 win at Priestfield when he headed home Andrew Crofts' flick on following Michael Flynn's long ball.

The following week, in his first starting appearance for Aldershot, López scored in the club's 1–1 draw away to AFC Wimbledon. In Aldershot's next match three days later, on 20 November, López scored the only goal of the game in a 1–0 away victory at Burton Albion; picking up Danny Hylton's flick-on before lashing the ball into the net from 20 yards. Epalle was a starter in the opening match of the tournament for The Indomitable Lions,a 4–2 loss against defending champions Egypt. He was an unused substitute in Cameroon's 5–1 win against Zambia, but he reappeared in the final match of the group stage, a 3–0 win against Sudan. In the quarter final against Tunisia he came in as a substitute in the 62nd minute for Emana to help his team win the match, as he assisted Mbia, with a flick-on, to score the match decider in extra time. In the semi final, Epalle came in for Idrissou in the start of second half to help his team advance to the final.

A gang of robbers known as The Eight Dragons have infiltrated a local residence in an attempt to steal a map. Upon its successful retrieval, when the bandits are about to make their getaway, the lights suddenly flick on, and they are accosted by the owner of the house (the map, presumably, is his as well). The owners of the house are quickly disposed of, and The Eight Dragons make off into the night with their map. Because of the robbery not being executed as smoothly as planned, The Eight Dragons become paranoid about actually seeking the treasure divulged in the map, and decide to hold off until the heat blows over.

This was the first time in the club's history that Stevenage had been promoted to the Football League. He made his first appearance of the 2010–11 campaign in Stevenage's first ever Football League fixture, coming on as a 60th-minute substitute in a 2–2 home draw against Macclesfield Town on 7 August 2010. He scored his first goal of the season in the 50th minute of a 1–1 draw away to Aldershot Town on 28 August 2010, after finishing from Odubade's flick-on. On 31 August 2010, Beardsley suffered a dislocated shoulder in Stevenage's 1–0 home loss to Brentford in the Football League Trophy, ruled him out of the team for six weeks.

The majority of the Britannia Stadium had barely recovered from their celebrations by the time Sidibé had fired the Potters into a three-goal lead just three minutes later. The Malian international striker latched onto Higginbotham's clever flick on, as the Potters laid siege to the Fulham penalty area, and smashed the ball into the roof of the net with a clinically taken half volley to put Stoke into a 3–0 lead. In the second half Fulham scored twice through Damien Duff and Clint Dempsey.

With seconds of stoppage-time remaining, Ole Gunnar Solskjær scored from Sheringham's headed flick-on, and United won a treble of the Premiership, FA Cup and European Cup with Sheringham – having not won a major honour in his 15-year career on leaving Spurs – now having won every top-level trophy in the English game. Sheringham's first-team chances remained limited during 1999–2000, but he still played enough times to merit another Premiership title medal. In 2000–01, United secured a third consecutive league title, with Sheringham top-scoring for United and playing some of the best football of his career. In April 2001, he was voted Footballer of the Year by both the Professional Footballers' Association and Football Writers' Association.

On 13 July Bulut was selected in Australia's 21-man squad for the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Colombia. Drawn into Group C Bulut played in Australia's opening group stage fixture which resulted in a 1–1 draw against Ecuador on 31 July. Bulut then played another 90 minutes in a 3–2 loss to Costa Rica on 3 August, where his flick-on header was touched by Thomas Oar to score Australia's first goal. In Australia's last group stage match against Spain on 6 August, Bulut received the ball from a goal kick from Mark Birighitti before getting past a Spanish opponent and scoring past goal keeper Fernando Pacheco Flores to make the score line 4–1.

On 25 July 2019, Ayew made the move permanent with a £2.5m transfer from Swansea City on a three-year deal. Ayew scored his first goal of the season on 24 August 2019 against Manchester United at Old Trafford, netting the opener in the first half against the run of play, latching on to Jeffrey Schlupp's flick-on as Crystal Palace secured an historic 2–1 victory. On Boxing Day 2019, Ayew scored the match winner in stoppage time as Crystal Palace came from behind to defeat West Ham 2–1. However, there was no chance to enter the European Cup just yet for Graham's team, as the ban on English clubs in European competitions (which was imposed by UEFA in 1985 following the Heysel disaster) continued for another season.

Parma had the better of the first half, particularly in the opening stages, and they won a penalty after Giovinco was felled by Alejandro Rodríguez, although it was unclear whether the Parma player was in or outside the box when the foul was made. The next match against Hull City was a dour 0–0 draw with both teams struggling to create clear goal scoring opportunities. The final home match of 2013 was a Midlands derby against Aston Villa and while it was an uneventful opening 45 minutes there was one major incident when Marc Wilson tripped Andreas Weimann who would have been through on goal but the referee deemed it not to be a clear goal scoring opportunity and showed Wilson a yellow card. At half time, Hughes decided to replace the ineffective Arnautović with Charlie Adam and soon after he scored after a flick on from Crouch. However, Villa scored an equaliser after a long ball from Brad Guzan fell to Pieters, whose attempted header back to Begović fell to Libor Kozák.

Pirlo found Claudio Marchisio with ten minutes to go and Marchisio chipped Parma goalkeeper Antonio Mirante to complete Juventus' scoring. The goal was given as offside as when Zayatte's looping header was on its way to the back of the net, Réda Johnson went for the ball from being in an offside position, he jumped and attempted to flick on the ball and even though he didn't touch the ball, the officials felt that Réda Johnson was interfering with play when being from an offside position. Into the last five- minutes with Wednesday on the front foot and looking to win the game, José Semedo went in with a strong but fair challenge on an opposing player where he won the ball.

Hugh Dallas, the Scottish referee who had also officiated in the Franco-Italian 1998 World Cup quarter-final, conducted the coin toss, which was won by Marseille captain Laurent Blanc and the Frenchman elected to shoot towards his team's own fans in the second half. Roberto Sensini, Parma's captain, chose to kick the match off. The first 25 minutes saw a cautious Marseille side play much of their football in their own half, only to knock it long to their isolated frontmen Robert Pires and Florian Maurice. He started in the club's first game of the 2011–12 season, a 1–0 loss to Walsall at the Bescot Stadium. Smith netted his first goal of the campaign on 27 August 2011, heading in Dean Cox's centre to give Orient a brief lead in a match they ultimately lost 2–1 at home to Carlisle United, meaning the club had opened the season with five straight defeats. He doubled his tally for the season a month later in a 1–1 draw with Colchester United, when he "tapped in" from close range in injury-time to help Orient earn only their second point from their opening seven league matches.
