The earliest version of the event was established at Chantilly in 1852. Its prize money was originally provided by the Chemin de Fer du Nord, a railway company in northern France and the race was titled the Prix de Chemin du Fer du Nord. The first running was a 1,200-metre flat race for two-year-olds, and in the following years it was a 2,400-metre event over hurdles. It reverted to being a flat race in 1856, when it became a 3,200-metre contest for horses aged three or older. The Chemin de Fer du Nord continued to provide the total prize money until 1910. Thereafter, it contributed a partial amount each year until 1937.

As a member of the Shropshire Wanderers, Wylie took part in the National Olympian Games held at Shrewsbury in 1879, when he won a cup presented for the Pentathlon event by King George I of Greece. He also came joint winner in high jump, won a heat in the quarter-mile handicap, and third in heat of 100 yards flat race, 120 yards hurdles and pole leaping.

Charles James William “Charlie” Smirke (1906-1993), was a British flat-race jockey. In a career that lasted from 1920 until 1959, he rode the winners of eleven British Classic Races. As a rider, he was known for his skill, strength and tactical intelligence, together with his self-confident and outspoken personality. Although he never won the Championship, he was regarded as one of the best jockeys of his era.

Scottish Union was retired from racing to become a breeding stallion. Although he sired the winners of more than 250 flat-race winners few of them were of any real consequence and he was considered a disappointment at stud. The most notable of his offspring was the gelding National Spirit, winner of the Champion Hurdle in 1947 and 1948. Scottish Union was eventually exported to Ireland where he died in 1954.

One For Arthur began his racing career on the amateur point-to-point circuit and was beaten in his first four races before winning at the Lingstown meeting in November 2013. When moved up to compete against professional competition following his move to Russell's yard in early 2014 he finished second in a National Hunt Flat race at Newcastle Racecourse in February and a Novice Hurdle at Kelso in March.

Lowry had some success with horse racing as a quarter-partner in the MALM partnership, but has in recent times taken to flat-race breeding. Lowry owned a horse named Wedding Morn, though the price he paid for the horse is not known. The horse was covered by Coolmore's Danehill Dancer, from the stable of John Magnier. He would have paid up to €75,000 to have the horse covered.

Sizing Europe made his racing debut as a four-year-old in a National Hunt Flat race at Leopardstown, where he was second to De Valira. He ran in a similar event at Limerick for a fifth-place finish before winning at Naas. With a victory under his belt, he was switched to hurdling. Marsh began riding racehorses in his mid teens and rode his first winner in 1866. He attracted the attention of some Newmarket trainers and rode his most important winner on Temple in the New Stakes at Royal Ascot in 1869. Marsh's rising weight forced him to abandon his career as a flat race jockey, although he had some success as a jockey in hurdle races and steeplechases until retiring from the saddle in 1881.

In 1990, he won his first flat race and within two seasons had lost his apprentice's claim. He now believes he was too light to have been a jump jockey in the first place. Without an apprentice claim, it was more difficult for him to win races, although he won the 1993 Northumberland Plate for trainer George Moore on Highflying. Chief Singer stood as a stallion at the Side Hill stud at Newmarket and was later exported to stand at the Hauptgestut Graditz in Germany where he died in 2000. The best of his offspring were the Listed flat race winner Alidiva and the successful National Hunt performer Chief's Song. Alidiva, however, proved to be an exceptional broodmare, producing the Group One winners Sleepytime, Taipan (Preis von Europa, Premio Roma) and Ali- Royal (Sussex Stakes).

Carroll House began his stud career in Japan in 1991. He was later returned to Europe in October 1996 where he stood as a breeding stallion in Ireland at the Sunnyhill Stud in County Kildare and the Garryrichard Stud in County Wexford. He had little success as a sire of flat race horses, but did have more success with his National Hunt horses including Roll Along the winner of the 2008 United House Gold Cup.

Pretty Polly was returned to the place of her birth, Eyrefield Lodge Stud, to begin her new career as a broodmare. Here Pretty Polly produced ten foals and four of these were flat race winners who between them won eleven races for £6,107. Another son, Tudor King (1920) won a small hurdle race. Her four daughters (each by a different sire) were successful as broodmares, founding the classic winning Pretty Polly family which remains important in the stud book.

John Andrew Reid (born 6 August 1955 in Banbridge County Down, Northern Ireland) is a retired flat race jockey. Reid served as an apprentice in his native Ireland to Leslie Crawford, before moving to England and joining Verley Bewicke. His first Classic victory came in the 1982 1,000 Guineas aboard On The House. His first major Group 1 race win came in the 1978 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot on Ile de Bourbon.

The Wonder stood as a breeding stallion in the United States and France with mixed result. The best of his flat race runners was A Magicman, a German-trained colt whose wins included the Prix de la Forêt, Prix de la Porte Maillot, Ostermann-Pokal, Oettingen-Rennen and Grosse Europa-Meile. The Wonder sired several winners over jumps including Wonder Man who won thirteen races including the Henry VIII Novices' Chase. His last recorded foal was born in 1999.

He finished second behind Rock On Ruby in the 2012 Champion Hurdle.

Joe Cotton was reportedly killed, along with another Thoroughbred called Sam Keene, on September 11, 1888 during the third race at the Mystic Park race track in Boston, Massachusetts. Flakey Dove ran thirteen times in her championship season: according to Price the mare thrived on a busy racing schedule. She began by recording her first win in a flat race when she won a maiden event at Nottingham. She was beaten in her next four races over hurdles but never finished worse than fourth. In January 1994, Flakey Dove entered contention for the Champion Hurdle with a win in the Champion Hurdle Trial at Haydock Park.

For a period it was France's richest and most prestigious race. The Grand Prix de Paris was abandoned because of the Franco-Prussian War in 1871. It was cancelled throughout World War I, with no running from 1915 to 1918. It continued to be the country's leading flat race until the introduction of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in 1920. The event was temporarily switched to Le Tremblay in 1943 and 1944. It was extended to 3,100 metres in 1964.

He had slightly more success as a sire of jumpers and show horses, with one of his offspring, the Queen's horse Petition, winning a major prize at the Royal Windsor Horse Show. He stood for several years at the British National Stud and was later based at the Conduit Farm in Oxfordshire.

Darlan began his racing career at the age of four when he contested a National Hunt Flat race over two miles at Haydock Park Racecourse on 23 April 2011. He was ridden by Andrew Tinkler and was made the 4/6 favourite against seven opponents. He took the lead three furlongs from the finish and went clear of the other runner in the closing stages to win by twenty-seven lengths. After this race, Darlan was sold privately to J. P. McManus.

Retired to stud in 1982, Henbit sired 152 race winners, but few of his flat-race runners were of any note. He had more success, however, when he was moved to Helshaw Grange Stud in Shropshire and marketed as a sire of jumpers. He sired two leading National Hunt racehorses in Kribensis, winner of the 1990 Champion Hurdle, and Sybillin, a steeplechaser whose wins included the Victor Chandler Chase and Tingle Creek Trophy. Henbit died at age twenty in 1997.

Philip Hobbs (born 26 July 1955) is a British racehorse trainer specializing mainly in National Hunt racing. He is based at stables near Minehead, Somerset. His biggest wins have come with Flagship Uberalles in the 2002 Queen Mother Champion Chase, Rooster Booster in the 2003 Champion Hurdle, Detroit City in the 2006 Triumph Hurdle and Massini's Maguire in the 2007 Ballymore Properties Novices' Hurdle. He has also trained flat race winners, notably winning the 2006 Cesarewitch Handicap with Detroit City.

Silver Buck made his first racecourse appearance as a five year old, in a National Hunt flat race at Clonmel Racecourse. He won this event and was then was campaigned in point-to-point races, winning two of his four starts. He was sold to Mrs Christine Haggas (nee Feather), the mother of trainer William Haggas. He was then moved to England to be trained by the Dickinson family, initially in Gisburn, Lancashire, then from the 1979/80 season, at Harewood in Yorkshire.

Richardson owned horses which took part in harness racing and Smith assisted him with buying horses and training them before moving on to training point-to-point horses. He eventually became a fully licensed trainer himself and sent out his first winner in 1958 with Owen's Mark at Sedgefield Racecourse. His first Flat race winner came in 1964 when Miss Autumn won at Aintree Racecourse. In 1969–70 and 1970 Smith became the first trainer to send out 50 winners in consecutive National Hunt and Flat seasons.

Jupiter Island was retired from racing to become a breeding stallion at Elms Stud in Northamptonshire. He had very little success as a sire of flat race horses but had more impact as a National Hunt stallion. The best of his progeny was probably Mr Cool, who won fourteen races including the Ascot Hurdle in 2003 and the Long Distance Hurdle in 2005. Jupiter Island was pensioned from stud duty in 1997 due to heart problems and was relocated to the Bloomsbury Stud at Woburn Abbey.

The first Hunt Club race meeting was held at the Thebarton Course on 2 October 1869. Races held were: Hunt Club Cup, Amateur Flat Race, Hunters' Stakes and Hurry Skurry. The meeting was held at the Adelaide Old Racecourse from 1870 to 1874, then Morphettville from 1875 to 1884; then the S.A.J.C. became insolvent and Morphettville was mortgaged and the Hunt Club held its meetings at the Old Course 1885 then back to Morphettville 1886 to 1914, Victoria Park in 1915, then a break until 1919.

At Catterick on 18 January 2008, he was ridden for the first time by Jason Maguire who would go on to be the jockey with which he is most closely associated.

Sanders was later banned for 8 days for excessive use of the whip, and thus missed the entire Royal Ascot meeting. Sanders was one of Britain's most successful flat race jockeys for several years, riding over 100 winners every year from 2002 to 2010. In the 2007 championship season Seb Sanders shared the British flat racing Champion Jockey's title with Jamie Spencer. On the final day of the season at Doncaster, their seasonal totals finished level at 190-190, when Spencer won the last race of the season.

Hogmaneigh is a flat race horse, trained by Stuart Williams and owned by Lucille Bone. In June 2007, Hogmaneigh won the Vodafone Dash on Derby Day at Epsom and in September 2008 won the Portland Handicap at Doncaster. In 2006 he was favourite for the Ayr Gold Cup, which is the richest handicap in Europe, but finished 13th. In September 2008, it was well publicised in the British press that Hogmaneigh had a problem with his feet and that Stuart Williams was buying special shoes for him from America, costing £150 a pair.

Blackstairmountain began his racing career in 2009, when he won National Hunt Flat races at Thurles and Tipperary and a conventional flat race at Galway Racecourse. In the following year, he competed in hurdle races and recorded his first major success when taking the Grade I Evening Herald Champion Novice Hurdle at the Punchestown Festival in May. After the race, Mullins explained that the horse had been particularly well-suited by the firm ground. Blackstairmountain failed to win in five hurdle races in the 2010/2011 National Hunt season before being campaigned in steeplechases.

The 2016/2017 National Hunt season saw Altior competing in novice chases starting with the Starlight Novice's Chase at Kempton on 21 November which he won by sixty-three lengths at odds of 2/13. Two weeks later he started at odds of 2/7 when he was moved up in class for the Grade 1 Henry VIII Novices' Chase at Sandown Park.

Faugheen was subsequently the subject of support for the 2013 Champion Bumper without setting foot on a racecourse with the yard connections reporting that he won impressively a schooling bumper but after an absence of over a year due to injury the gelding returned on 11 May 2013 in a twenty-two runner National Hunt Flat race at Punchestown Racecourse. Ridden by his trainer's son Patrick Mullins, he started 11/8 favourite and accelerated clear of his opponents in the last quarter mile to win by twenty-two lengths from Josses Hill.

Karshi was a dark-coated bay gelding with no white markings bred in the United Kingdom by his owner Samuel Vestey, 3rd Baron Vestey. He was sired by Persian Bold whose wins included the Richmond Stakes and the Horris Hill Stakes in 1977. As a breeding stallion he was primarily known as a sire of flat race horses including Kooyonga, Bold Pilot, Pennine Walk (Queen Anne Stakes) and Persian Heights (St James's Palace Stakes). Kasrhi's dam Kashmiri Snow won one race and was a granddaughter of Lorenzaccio's half-sister Toast Record.

Rooster Booster began his racing career in a National Hunt Flat Race at Wincanton in February 1999, where he finished seventh of eighteen runners. He had six more runs for Richard Mitchell, winning just one of those in the form, a maiden hurdle at Taunton. He was then switched to the yard of Philip Hobbs and made his debut for him in April 2000, finishing 2nd behind Valiramix in a Novices' Hurdle at Chepstow. He had one more run that season, finishing third in a competitive Novice Hurdle at Punchestown.

The course was constructed in 1881, and it was rebuilt in 1926 to a design by Paolo Vietti-Violi. It is the venue of three Group 1 flat races – the Premio Presidente della Repubblica, the Premio Lydia Tesio and the Premio Roma. The track also stages the most valuable flat race in Italy, the Derby Italiano, which was downgraded to Group 2 status in 2009.

Morley Street began his racing career by winning a National Hunt Flat race at Sandown Park Racecourse on 5 November 1988. He was then campaigned in Novice Hurdles (races for horses which have not won a hurdle race before the start of the season), and won races at Sandown, Newbury and Ascot. In March, he was sent to the Cheltenham Festival to contest the Sun Alliance Novices' Hurdle. He started 5/1 second favourite and finished fourth of the twenty-two runners behind Sayfar's Lad, Trapper John and Knight Oil.

He made no impression in the race won by Make A Stand making several jumping mistakes and being tailed off in last place when Bradley pulled him up. He did not run again in the 1996/7 National Hunt season, but finished fourth in a flat race at Haydock Park eighteen days after his poor run at Cheltenham. In his final season over hurdles, Collier Bay ran three times. He was placed in the Bula Hurdle and the Champion Hurdle Trial but missed Cheltenham and was pulled up in the Aintree Hurdle.

Thistlecrack (foaled 29 March 2008) is a British Thoroughbred racehorse who competes in National Hunt races. Unraced until he was five years old, he recorded his first win in a National Hunt Flat race in 2014. In the 2014/15 National Hunt season he won two minor hurdle races before improving when tried over long distances and winning the Grade 1 Sefton Novices' Hurdle. In the following season he established himself as the best staying hurdler in Britain with wins in the Long Distance Hurdle, Long Walk Hurdle, Cleeve Hurdle, World Hurdle and Liverpool Hurdle.

Many Clouds (21 April 2007 – 28 January 2017) was an Irish-bred, British- trained Thoroughbred racehorse best known for winning the 2015 Grand National. After being sold as a foal, he was sent to England and trained for a National Hunt racing career by Oliver Sherwood. He won a National Hunt Flat race and two Novice hurdle races before moving to steeplechases as a six-year-old in the autumn of 2013. In his first season over fences, he won twice as well as finishing second in the Grade 2 Reynoldstown Novices' Chase and fourth in the Grade 1 Mildmay Novices' Chase.

There are six flights of hurdles: three down the back straight, three in the home straight. The final flat race at Aintree took place on the first day of the Grand National meeting in 1976. Flat races of five furlongs were run on a straight course which ran diagonally across the centre of the Mildmay course. On this course on 7th April 1967, on the day before the infamous Foinavon Grand National, on his first visit to Aintree the two year old Red Rum, ridden by Paul Cook, dead-heated with Curlicue in a five furlong selling plate.

Imperial Commander's first race was at Summerhill point-to-point in Ireland on 24 April 2005, a race he won by 8 lengths. His next racecourse appearance and first under rules was a National Hunt flat race at Cheltenham on 25 October 2006. This too he won, and already he was being described as a 'future chaser on looks' by the Racing Post. He garnered one victory over hurdles, a £2000 race at Newcastle in January 2007, but failed to win at Graded level, including attempts at the 2007 Cheltenham and Aintree festivals (although he was placed at the latter).

After a break of almost ten months, Back In Front returned in a flat race at Navan in October 2004. Ridden by the leading flat jockey Jamie Spencer, he went clear off his rivals in the final furlong and won by three and a half lengths from the three-year-old filly Akilana. In the Morgiana Hurdle in November, he finished second to Harchibald, with the odds- on favourite Macs Joy in third. Back In Front was sent to England in the following month when he faced the leading British hurdlers Rooster Booster and Inglis Drever in the Bula Hurdle at Cheltenham.

Darlan (11 March 2007 – 4 February 2013) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse who competed in National Hunt racing. In a nine-race career that lasted from April 2011 until February 2013, he won six times, finished second once and fell twice. After winning his only National Hunt Flat race, he was one of the leading novice hurdlers of the 2011/2012 season, winning four races including the Top Novices' Hurdle. In the following year, he established himself as a leading contender for the Champion Hurdle by winning the Christmas Hurdle, but was killed in a fall in his next race.

She rode her mother's novice mare, Scorched Earth, to victory in the Goya Stakes at Kempton Park on 6 May 1972, the first ever ladies' flat race held under Jockey Club rules. Neither horse nor jockey had raced previously. The race was the first in a twelve race series for female jockeys, and with three winners from seven rides, Tufnell was the series champion. She continued to ride competitively until 1974, including in the first mixed race, at Nottingham, in March 1974, and founded the Lady Jockeys' Association of Great Britain, the first such body in the world, after a meeting at Haydock.

After an absence of well over 3 months, Lassalle ran in the 1973 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp on 7 October. Racing over an inadequate distance of 2400 m, he started a 99/1 outsider, but ran well to finish ninth of the 27 runners behind Rheingold. Three weeks after his run in the Arc, Lassalle returned to Longchamp for Europe's longest major flat race, the 4800-m (3-mi) Prix Gladiateur. He was made the 1.7/1 favourite ahead of Parnell, with the best of the other five runners appearing to be the six-year- old gelding Forceful.

Native River began his racing career on the amateur point-to-point circuit, unseating his rider at the Dromahane meeting on 17 March 2014. He was then sent to England and entered professional training with Colin Tizzard at Milborne Port, in Dorset. He finished third in a National Hunt Flat race at Newton Abbot Racecourse on 10 October and then recorded his first success in a Novices' Hurdle race at Stratford Racecourse three weeks later. A month later, he started at odds of 10/1 for a more valuable novice event at Newcastle Racecourse and won by lengths from the favourite Red.

Acomb Sports Club Before the establishment of the York Racecourse on the Knavesmire, Acomb Moor was used for staging horse racing. Acomb Moor occupied the land south of Westfield and covered the land where the modern housing estates of Woodthorpe and Acomb Park are located. Acomb also lends its name to The Acomb Stakes, a Group 3 seven furlong flat race for two-year-old thoroughbreds, which is run at the Knavesmire every August. Acomb FC was a founding member of the York Football League in 1897 and then a founding member of the Yorkshire Football League in 1920.

Generally, horses have to be maidens (non-winners) at the time of the race. In regions where jumping races take place, flat racing and jumps racing are sometimes treated as two distinct forms of racing and winning in one category does not preclude a horse entering a maiden in the other. For example, a horse can win multiple jumps races and still be eligible to enter maiden flat races if they have not won a race on the flat. Likewise, flat race winners are eligible to enter hurdle or steeple maidens if they have not won the relevant type of jumps race.

Flemensfirth has had very little success as a sire of flat-race horses, but has been highly successful as a sire of jumpers. By 2005 he was being mentioned as a "leading sire of the future" and he has gone on to produce the winners of almost five hundred races. His best son is the Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Imperial Commander, while his other Grade I winners include Tidal Bay, Flemenstar, Joe Lively, Relegate, Colreevy and Pandorama. He stood for the Coolmore organisation at The Beeches stud in County Waterford from 2000 until his retirement from stallion duty in 2020.

Limestone Lad began his final season when he finished unplaced in a flat race at the Curragh in October. On 3 November he won the Lismullen Hurdle, reversing the previous year's form to beat Liss A Paoraigh by two lengths after leading from the start. Ten days later he confirmed his superiority over Liss A Paoraigh as he recorded his third win in the Morgiana Hurdle, beating the mare by eleven lengths. On 1 December Limestone Lad was matched against his old rival Ned Kelly as well as the Herald Champion Novice Hurdle winner Scottish Memories in the Hatton's Grace Hurdle.

Princeful began his racing career as a five-year-old in a National Hunt Flat race at Worcester Racecourse on 22 May 1996. He started the 9/2 joint-favourite and won by twelve lengths from the mare Quick Bowler. After a break of more than seven months he returned for a similar event at Towcester Racecourse and led for most of the way before winning by two and a half lengths from Billingsgate. In January 1997, the gelding was switched to compete in novice hurdle races, making his debut over obstacles when finishing fifth behind Red Blazer at Leicester.

Over the same distance at Ascot in July she started the 4/9 favourite for the Princess Margaret Stakes. She showed impressive acceleration to take the lead approaching the final furlong and won by three length from Star of Bagdad giving Lester Piggott his 3,000th flat race win. Roussalka was less impressive when winning the Burmah Castrol Stakes at Kempton Park Racecourse on 31 August, prevailing by only a neck from Honey Pot. Henry Cecil reportedly said the filly had been unsuited by the slow early pace which led to the race developing into a two furlong sprint.

Koko still looked the more likely winner but broke a blood vessel and dropped back to third, allowing Patron Saint to draw clear and win by four lengths from the thirteen-year-old veteran Vive. On his next start Patron Saint finished third on a flat race in which he was ridden by Noel Murless, later to become a leading trainer. Patron Saint was expected to defend his Gold Cup title in 1929 but missed the race after suffering a series of injuries and training problems. He returned in 1930 and won the Plodders Chase at Nottingham Racecourse, but had no further success.

Morley Street was in contention two hurdles from the finish, but failed to quicken and ran sixth behind Royal Gait. He ended the season with a third victory in the Aintree Hurdle, beating the Irish mare Minorettes Girl by half a length. Morley Street won a flat race at Doncaster in October, and then began the new National Hunt season by beating Granville Again in the Elite Hurdle at Cheltenham in November. He failed to run up to his best form when finishing second as odds-on favourite in the Ascot Hurdle and was then beaten in races at Cheltenham and Sandown.

On 9 July, Dream Ahead was brought back in distance for the six furlong July Cup at Newmarket. With Buick unavailable, Dream Ahead was ridden by Hayley Turner, who was attempting to become the first woman to ride the outright winner of a British Group One flat race. Turner positioned the colt just behind the leaders, but had difficulty obtaining a clear run a furlong from the finish. In the closing stages, Dream Ahead belatedly found a clear run and finished strongly to catch Bated Breath inside the furlong and won "readily" by half a length.

The mare's win was enthusiastically received by the Cheltenham crowd and Richard Price admitted that "I had a tear in my eye" as he led Flakey Dove into the winner's enclosure. On her next appearance, Flakey Dove won a flat race at Haydock on 2 April before running in the Grade I Aintree Hurdle a week later. She was made favourite for the race but ran poorly and finished tailed off behind Danoli. On her final run of the season, Flakey Dove returned to the flat and finished unplaced in the Group Three Sagaro Stakes at Ascot.

Jim Crowley (Born 14 July 1978) comes from Ascot and after beginning his horse racing career as an amateur flat race jockey he switched to National Hunt racing, riding for the stable of Sue Smith. He rode approximately 300 winners in National Hunt racing before returning to Flat racing and riding for his sister-in-law, Amanda Perrett, at Pulborough. In 2010 he became stable jockey for Ralph Beckett's stable. Crowley won his first British champion jockeys' title in 2016, beating the 2015 champion, Silvestre de Sousa, into second place and breaking the record for most winners ridden in a month with 46 victories in September.

The National meeting was revived in 1976 under Ladbrokes' management and a new clerk of the course, John Hughes (although Bill Davies still owned the course). The first day of the Spring Meeting saw the final flat race run at Aintree, the Knowsley Stakes over 1 mile 5 furlongs; the final two days, including Grand National day were all National Hunt events. In 1977 all three days of the 'National' meeting were National Hunt for the first time, and have continued to be so. The uncertainty about the future of the course was finally removed in December 1983 when the Jockey Club bought the course from Bill Davies.

Seb Sanders (born 25 September 1971 in Birmingham, England) is a former flat race jockey. He came into racing by getting a job with trainer Bryan McMahon, and it was for McMahon that Sanders rode his first winner on 12 June 1990 on Band On The Run. He was Champion Apprentice in 1995, and gained his first Group 1 success in 1997 in the July Cup at Newmarket on the 50-1 outsider Compton Place. He took over from George Duffield in 2004 as first jockey to Sir Mark Prescott, and in 2006 Sanders rode Confidential Lady to victory in the French Oaks giving Prescott his first Classic success.

Earth Summit (1988–2005) was a British racehorse. He was foaled in 1988, a son of Celtic Cone, who was a winning stayer on the flat and over hurdles. Celtic Cone loved soft ground, as did many of his progeny. Earth Summit was bought by a six-man partnership aptly named The Summit Partnership, in 1992 (including footballer Ricky George, Aintree press officer Nigel Payne, Partner in an accountancy firm Peter Earl, retired businessman Gordon Perry, local government officer Mike Bailey and media buying agency proprietor Bob Sims) and began his racing career as a four-year-old, finishing second in a bumper (a National Hunt flat race) at Cheltenham.

My Tent Or Yours was restrained by McCoy in the early stages and survived a mistake at the fifth hurdle before moving up into second place behind The New One before the second last. The two leading contenders drew away from the other runners in the straight with My Tent Or Yours gaining the advantage in the last 100 yards to win by half a length after what Daily Telegraph described as "the best hurdle race run in England or Ireland this season". My Tent Or Yours prepared for the 2014 Champion Hurdle with a run in a two-mile flat race on the Polytrack surface at Kempton on 19 February.

The field included five horses who had never won over fences and five others who were aged thirteen or over. Red Rower, ridden the former flat race jockey Davy Jones started the 11-4 favourite ahead of Paladin on 100/30 and Schubert on 11-2 whilst the other runners included the thirteen-year-old Poet Prince. Red Rower tracked the front-runners before going up to dispute the lead with Paladin and Schubert at the last fence and drew away on the run-in to win by three lengths. Red Rower's last major race was the 1946 Grand National the first edition of the race for six years.

The gelding returned to Cheltenham in March and was moved up in class for the Grade I Champion Bumper in which he was ridden by Charlie Swan. He briefly took the lead inside the last quarter mile before finishing third to Pizarro and Rhinestone Cowboy with Thisthatandtother in fourth and Iris's Gift fifth of the twenty-three runners. O'Grady later said of the race; "It must have been one of the most competitive bumpers that's ever been run". On his final appearance of the season, he ran very poorly in the Champion INH Flat Race at Punchestown Racecourse in April, finishing tailed off in last place.

French Holly began his racing career competing in National Hunt Flat races, also known as "bumpers" making his debut at Uttoxeter Racecourse on 16 February 1996. Ridden by Paul Carberry he started the 5/4 favourite in a field of fifteen runners and won "comfortably" by four lengths after taking the lead in the final quarter mile. In the following month he was even more impressive at Newbury Racecourse, winning easily by thirteen lengths after taking the lead three furlongs from the finish. In April he was sent to Ireland and moved up in class as he contested the Grade I Jack White Memorial Flat Race at the Punchestown Festival.

He started the 2/1 favourite, but was beaten three quarters of a length by the Paddy Mullins trained Noble Thyne. After a break of more than ten months, French Holly returned for the Champion Bumper at the 1997 Cheltenham Festival. Ridden by Richard Hughes, he was among the leaders before weakening in the closing stages to finish sixth of the twenty-five runners, nine and a half lengths behind the Irish-trained winner Florida Pearl. In the following month he made a second unsuccessful attempt to win the Jack White Memorial Flat Race at Punchestown, finishing third behind Arctic Camper and Cloone Bridge.

Like-A-Butterfly (19 April 1994 - 7 February 2013) was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare who competed in National Hunt racing. Although she did not begin competing in public until she was seven years old she had a successful racing career, winning twelve of her seventeen races, including five at Grade I level. She was unbeaten in three National Hunt Flat races including the Champion INH Flat Race and her first five over hurdles including the Royal Bond Novice Hurdle, Deloitte Novice Hurdle and Supreme Novices' Hurdle. She won the Irish Champion Hurdle but missed the whole of the next season through injury.

Like-A-Butterfly was a bay mare with no white markings bred in Ireland by P. J. McGee. he was sired by Montelimar, a lightly-campaigned son of Alleged who won the Gallinule Stakes in 1984 and became a very successful National Hunt stallion: his other progeny included the Grand National winners Hedgehunter and Monty's Pass. Her dam, Swifts Butterfly, was a poor racehorse who never finished better than third in thirteen attempts in 1990 and 1991. During her racing career, Like-A-Butterfly was owned by J. P. McManus and trained by the former flat race jockey Christy Roche at Coolaghknock Glebe, County Kildare.

Sizing John was sired by Midnight Legend, a horse who raced successfully both on the flat and over hurdles winning the March Stakes, Glorious Stakes, Top Novices' Hurdle and Champion Novice Hurdle. As a breeding stallion he has sired several other good jumpers including Midnight Chase (Cotswold Chase) and Seeyouatmidnight (Rendlesham Hurdle, Dipper Novices' Chase). Sizing John's dam La Perrotine was a French-bred mare who showed some ability on the track, winning one National Hunt Flat race and three times over hurdles. Her dam Haratiyna was half-sister to the Italian Derby winner Houmayoun and a descendant of the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches winner Altissima.

Buveur d'Air began his racing career in flat races restricted to AQPS horses. He was unbeaten in two French races, winning at Saint-Jean-de-Monts in August 2014 and at Nantes on 2 October. The gelding was then acquired by Potensis Bloodstock and Chris Giles and was sent to England where he was trained at Upper Lambourn in Berkshire by Nicky Henderson. Competing for his new connections in National Hunt Flat races he finished second to Barters Hill in February 2015 at Newbury Racecourse and then finished fourth behind the same horse in the more competitive Champion Standard Open NH Flat Race at Aintree's Grand National meeting in April.

Klairon Davis began his undefeated second season in a National Hunt Flat race at Gowran Park on 4 November 1994 in which he was again ridden by Murphy. He started the 6/4 favourite against seven opponents and recorded his first victory, beating the mare Maryjo by eleven lengths. Three weeks later he made his debut over obstacles in a novice hurdle race at Naas Racecourse and won by twelve lengths when ridden by the professional jockey Tom Taaffe, who was riding in his final season. Taaffe was again in the saddle when Klairon Davis added wins in novice hurdles at Navan Racecourse in December and Thurles Racecourse in early January.

Ridden by Mick Kinane, the colt raced just behind the leaders before making a sustained challenge in the straight. He took the lead inside the final furlong and won by three-quarters of a lengths from the Henry Cecil-trained three-year-old Citidancer. Five weeks later Carroll House was one of nineteen horses to contest the 68th running of France's premier flat race, the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe over 2400 metres at Longchamp. The undefeated three-year-old In The Wings started favourite ahead of Cacoethes, Saint Andrews, Young Mother and Behera, with Carroll House, ridden again by Kinane starting at odds of 18.9/1.

He was then stepped up in class for the Grade 2 Moscow Flyer Novice Hurdle at Punchestown in January. He started at odds of 1/3 and won "very easily" by three and three quarter lengths from the Mouse Morris-trained Alpha des Obeaux. After an absence of two months, Douvan was sent to the Cheltenham Festival for the Supreme Novices' Hurdle on 10 March and started the 2/1 favourite in a twelve-runner field. The best fancied of his opponents were the Tolworth Hurdle winner L'Ami Serge, the Champion INH Flat Race winner Shaneshill (also trained by Mullins) and the improving handicapper Jollyallen.

Among the participants, two completed doubles: Arialis Gandulla Martínez was the winner of both the women's 100 metres and 200 metres while Peru's Zulema Huacasi claimed both the 3000 metres flat and steeplechase titles. Brazil had two multiple medallists in Izabela da Silva (women's discus throw winner and shot put runner-up) and Thiago do Rosário (runner-up in both the men's 1500 metres and 5000 metres). Sage Watson of Canada won the 400 metres hurdles title, a silver in the 4×400 m relay, and a bronze in the flat race. Ecuadorian Angela Tenorio was a minor medallist in both the women's sprints.

The former flat race, who had once been well fancied in the Epsom Derby was sent off at 12/1 but never got into contention and finished last of the six recorded finishers. Alfred was the mount of 1847 winner Denny Wynne, who was having his fourth ride in the race and had already become the popular rider among Irish visitors to Aintree. Wynne guided his mount through the problems of the race without ever challenging the leader to finish fourth. Peter Simple was among the each way chances at 20/1 and won the race without ever being headed, going to the front at the head of those who broke with a false start.

My Tent Or Yours (foaled 16 March 2007) is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse who competes in National Hunt racing and has finished second in three editions of the Champion Hurdle. In his first season, he showed promising form in National Hunt Flat races, winning on his debut and finishing second in the Champion Standard Open NH Flat Race. In the following year he was one of the best novice hurdlers in the British Isles, winning the Betfair Hurdle against more experienced rivals and the Top Novices' Hurdle at Aintree. In the 2013/2014 National Hunt season he won the Fighting Fifth Hurdle and the Christmas Hurdle and finished runner-up in the Champion Hurdle.

Vintage Crop began his racing career by winning a two-mile flat race at Thurles Racecourse in October 1991 and was then campaigned in National Hunt races, winning two novice hurdle in December. He returned to the flat in 1992, winning handicap races at Gowran Park and Tralee and finishing fifth to Mashaallah when moved up in class for the Group One Irish St. Leger at the Curragh Racecourse. In October he was sent to England to contest the Cesarewitch Handicap over two and a quarter miles at Newmarket Racecourse. Carrying a weight of 132 pounds he took the lead a quarter of a mile from the finish and drew away to win by eight lengths.

Frederick James Archer (11 January 1857 – 8 November 1886), also known by the nickname The Tin Man, was an English flat race jockey of the Victorian era, described as "the best all-round jockey that the turf has ever seen". He was Champion Jockey for 13 consecutive years until 1886, riding 2,748 winners from 8,084 starts, in so doing setting records for the number of Champion Jockey titles (13), number of wins in a season (246) and number of race wins (2748) which remained unthreatened until the arrival of Steve Donoghue and Sir Gordon Richards well into the 20th century. Delirious from wasting and the loss of his wife during childbirth, he committed suicide at the age of 29.

On 27 April, the mare was moved up in class for the Grade I paddypower.com Champion INH Flat Race in which she was ridden by the leading amateur jockey J T McNamara, Crowe being forced to miss the ride after sustaining a broken collar bone. Like A Butterfly started 11/8 favourite ahead of the previously unbeaten geldings Native Jack and Davenport Milenium. She was restrained by McNamara in the early stages before moving up to take the lead a furlong and a half from the finish and kept on well in the closing stages to win by one and a half lengths and three lengths from Davenport Milenium and the mare Spirit Leader.

The New One (foaled 23 February 2008) is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse who competed in National Hunt races. In a career running from November 2011 to December 2018 he ran in 40 races, winning 20 times, being placed a further nine times and earning over £1,000,000 in win and place prize money. In the 2011/2012 National Hunt season he won three of his four races when competing in National Hunt Flat races including the Champion Standard Open NH Flat Race at Aintree Racecourse. In the following year, competing over hurdles, he won four of his six starts including the Leamington Novices' Hurdle and the Baring Bingham Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

Having been requested by several Gentlemen to erect a covered stand for the accommodation of gentleman attending the races, the public are hereby respectfully informed that a complete and elegant stand is now finished, with an inscription against it in golden letters, "The Gentleman's Stand" where gentlemen may have places at two shillings and sixpence each. Popularity declined slightly until the garrison came to Ipswich in the early 19th century where the officers brought their support to the races. The course ran a mix of flat and hunt racing, although the last flat race was in 1884 following the withdrawal of the Queen's Plate. From then, it became exclusively a National Hunt course.

The Winning Line The Parade Ring Sandown Park is a horse racing course and leisure venue in Esher, Surrey, England, located in the outer suburbs of London. It hosts 5 Grade One National Hunt races and one Group 1 flat race, the Eclipse Stakes. It regularly has horse racing during afternoons, evenings and on weekends, and also hosts many non racing events such as trade shows, wedding fairs, toy fairs, car shows and auctions, property shows, concerts, and even some private events. It was requisitioned by the War Department from 1940-1945 for World War II. The venue has hosted bands such as UB40, Madness, Girls Aloud, Spandau Ballet and Simply Red.

The Durham National is a steeplechase run at an October meeting over the unusual distance of three and three quarter miles. One of the most popular winners in recent years was Fatehalkhair, a cast-off from one of the major flat race stables, who went on to win twenty races. Thirteen of them were over jumps, and they were all at Sedgefield.The Racing Post website Local businessman and racehorse owner John Wade sponsored a series of selling hurdle races throughout the season at Sedgefield for a number of years, which in 2010 was upgraded to a series of novices' hurdles culminating in a final on the same night as the Durham National.

Bramley, Leeds. Later called "Betfred"; now closed The Racehorse Betting Control Board was created by the Racecourse Betting Act 1928, as a statutory corporation. It was set up by Winston Churchill as a government-appointed board, with the intention of providing a safe, state-controlled alternative to illegal off course bookmakers and ensuring that some gambling revenues were put back into the sport of horse racing. The first major race meetings with tote betting were the flat race meetings at Newmarket (July Course) and Carlisle on 2 July 1929. Under the Betting Levy Act 1961 the board was reconstituted as the Horserace Totalisator Board (the Tote), with responsibility for the redistribution of funds to racing transferred to the Horserace Betting Levy Board.

After success as a four-year-old in the Triumph Hurdle, he had a chequered career over hurdles with just two wins in his next eleven starts, which included one entry in a flat race. His chasing career began when he was six, and, after winning or being placed in several novice chases, he won a handicap at Limerick and then the Grade 2 National Hunt Challenge Cup at Cheltenham in 2017. He achieved fame with victories at Cheltenham and Aintree in 2018 and then again in 2019, when he became the first horse since Red Rum in 1973 and 1974 to win back-to-back Grand Nationals. He was ridden to victory in both Grand Nationals and the Triumph Hurdle by Davy Russell.

Nicknamed Barry, his father named him after a close friend, Major Barak G. Thomas, a lawyer and American Civil War officer who established Dixiana Farm in Lexington, Kentucky in 1887 where he bred such horses as United States Racing Hall of Fame inductee Domino and owned the 1893 Leading sire in North America, Himyar. Between 1902 and 1917, Barry Littlefield trained for the highly successful racing stable owned by the Waterloo, Ontario distilling magnate, Joseph E. Seagram. Littlefield was a multiple winner of every top Canadian flat race of his era including five editions of the country's most prestigious event, the King's Plate (Queen's Plate). After retiring from racing, Barry Littlefield returned to be near family members in his native New Jersey where he died in 1936.

Rock On Ruby began the 2010/2011 season by winning his third successive National Hunt flat race, this time at Cheltenham, and was then campaigned in Novice Hurdle races (races confined to horses which have not won over hurdles before the start of the season). He made a successful hurdling debut by winning a race at Newbury in December by six lengths: few details of his victory were reported as the race was run in thick fog. He was then moved up in class to contest the Grade II Classic Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham in January. He jumped the last hurdle level with Bobs Worth but was beaten by two and a half lengths after his jockey dropped his whip 120 yards from the finish.

Cisneros made his first international appearances in 2007. He began his career competing both the hurdles and the 400 metres sprint. After ran a personal best time of 46.05 seconds for the flat race at a local meeting in March, he won the national junior title in the event. He won two titles at the 2007 ALBA Games, running a national junior record of 49.57 seconds to win the 400 m hurdles before going on to help the Cuban 4×400 metres relay team take a second gold medal. He was chosen for the Cuban squad at the 2007 Pan American Games and managed to reach the semi-finals of the 400 m, although the relay team were disqualified in the heats.

Cyborgo was off the course for a year before returning for the 1996 Stayers' Hurdle in which he was ridden for the first time by David Bridgwater. Halkopous, Hebridean, Simpson and Top Spin were among his opponents but none were seriously fancied in the nineteen-runner field. The Tipperkevin Hurdle winner Derrymoyle started 4/1 favourite ahead of Better Times Ahead (Premier Long Distance Hurdle), Seekin Cash and Treble Bob (Champion Novice Hurdle), with Cyborgo next in the betting on 8/1 alongside the Long Walk Hurdle winner Silver Wedge. Other fancied runners included the (Champion INH Flat Race) winner Tiananmen Square, the fourteen-year-old veteran Mole Board and the mare Mysilv, whose thirteen wins included the Triumph Hurdle and the Tote Gold Trophy.

Two weeks later at Cheltenham he was matched against Pegwell Bay and the outstanding two-mile chaser Waterloo Boy as he contested the Silver Trophy Chase for a second time. McCourt settled the gelding in third place before taking the lead from Pegwell Bay at the last and held off the late challenge of Waterloo Boy to win by a head. On 4 May Norton's Coin made his first and last appearance over hurdles when he finished second of the ten runners in the Grade 2 Staffordshire Hurdle, a length behind the winner Randolph Place. In June he made his only appearance in a flat race when he was ridden by Lester Piggott in the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot.

In the 2014/15 National Hunt season, Thistlecrack finished fifth in the Championship Standard Open NH Flat Race at Ascot Racecourse in December and was then campaigned in novice hurdle races. On his first run over obstacles he won "easily" at Wincanton on 15 January, taking the lead approaching the final hurdle and drawing away to win by nine lengths. Nine days later the gelding was stepped up in class for the Grade 2 Classic Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham Racecourse and finished tailed-off in seventh place behind the Alan King-trained Ordo Ab Chao. Having been ridden by an amateur jockey in his previous starts, Thistlecrack was partnered by the leading professional Ruby Walsh when he ran at Ascot in 14 February.

After winning his only National Hunt Flat race, Remittance Man began his career over obstacles in a novice hurdle race at Huntingdon Racecourse on 7 December 1988 and finished third of the seven runners behind Espy. He finished second to Sayfar's Lad (who went on to win the Sun Alliance Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival) at Newton Abbot Racecourse in December, second to Duke de Vendome at Towcester Racecourse in January and second again to Dan Marino at the same course in March. On his final appearance he carried 166 pounds in a novices' handicap at Cheltenham in April and finished third of the twenty-four runners behind Knighton Lad. Having failed to win in his first season, Remittance Man remained eligible to compete in novices' hurdles in 1989/1990.

Hayley Turner (born 3 January 1983) is an English professional jockey Turner is considered to be the first woman to achieve a sustained, day-in, day-out, successful career as a professional jockey in the UK. Hayley Turner's success has seen an enormous increase in the number of female apprentice jockeys riding in the UK in the second decade of the 21st century. She became the first woman to ride 100 UK Flat race winners during a calendar year, when winning on 'Mullitovermaurice' at Wolverhampton on 30 December 2008. In that year Turner rode in over 900 races in the UK - one of only five riders to achieve the milestone that year. On 31 August 2015 Turner announced that she would retire from riding at the end of the season.

Golden Cygnet was sent to Goffs November Sales as an unbroken 3-year-old in 1975, where he was bought by trainer Edward O'Grady for 980 guineas. He began his racing career as a 4-year-old in a flat maiden over 2 miles at Leopardstown in June 1976. He was well supported in the betting market (7/1 to 3/1) and although he won the race, he was disqualified for causing interference inside the final furlong and placed second. His next run was in a national hunt flat race at Roscommon where he was a fast-finishing third, beaten less than a length before signing off for the year with an 8-length win at Naas in a one-and-a-half mile flat maiden for amateur riders in early October.

Sea-Bird was a chestnut horse with a narrow white blaze and white socks on his hind legs bred at the stables of his owner, the Lille textile manufacturer Jean Ternynck. Described by Timeform as "a tall, well-made horse", Sea-Bird was sired by the French Derby runner-up Dan Cupid, and trained, like his sire, in France by Etienne Pollet at Chantilly. None of his five immediate dams ever won a flat race, although his great-grandam Couleur did produce Camaree, who won the 1000 Guineas in 1950, and Sea Bird was more distantly related to the Belmont Stakes winner High Echelon. On the racetrack, Sea-Bird's dam, Sicalade, dead-heated once for second place as a two-year-old in what was her only season to race.

Glenn "Slats" Hardin Glenn Foster "Slats" Hardin (July 1, 1910 - March 6, 1975) was an American athlete, winner of 400 m hurdles at the 1936 Summer Olympics. Born in Derma, Mississippi, Glenn Hardin was the world's dominant 400 m hurdler in the 1930s and was equally tough in the 400 m flat race. Hardin's rise began at the 1932 Summer Olympics, where he finished second in the 400 m hurdles in 52.0 but was given credit for a world record when the winner, Bob Tisdall from Ireland, knocked down a hurdle, an error that in those days disqualified a performance for world record consideration. Hardin lowered the record to 51.8 in the 1934 AAU championships and then bettered it to 50.6 during a meet in Stockholm later that year.

Quixall Crossett began his racing career on 21 February 1990 when he finished eighteenth of the nineteen runners in a National Hunt Flat race at Catterick Racecourse. He soon graduated to hurdles and then to chases but showed no aptitude for either type of obstacle and usually came home towards the rear at odds of 50/1 or greater. In the spring of 1996 he showed marginal improvement when he ran second in a race on the amateur point-to-point circuit and then took third place in a hunter chase at Newcastle Racecourse on 16 March. Later that year he finished third on two other occasions before reaching a new career high when he ran second at odds of 150/1 in a minor steeplechase at Kelso Racecourse in October.

Don Cossack made his debut in a National Hunt Flat race at Punchestown Racecourse in April 2011 and finished fifth of the twenty-four runners behind King Vuvuzela. In the 2011/2012 season he was unbeaten in three National Hunt flat races, ridden on each occasion by Nina Carberry. After recording his first success at Naas Racecourse in October he was stepped up in class for a Grade Two event at Navan Racecourse in December and started favourite at odds of 4/6. He raced in second as the outsider Rory O'Moore opened up a lead which at one point stretched to over 100 yards, but made up the deficit in the straight, took the lead in the closing stages and won by one and a half lengths.

Leopardstown Racecourse. The site of Macs Joy's two Grade I wins in 2004/5 After warming up with third place in a flat race Macs Joy won the Anglo Irish Bank Hurdle at Down Royal, beating the Supreme Novices' Hurdle winner Brave Inca "comfortably" This was to be the first of twelve meetings between the two horses over the next eighteen months (the final score was 7–5 in Brave Inca's favour). Although he was carrying ten pounds less than the runner-up, his performance attracted the attention of the bookmakers, who offered him at odds of 14-1 for the Champion Hurdle immediately after the race. After a third place to Harchibald in the Morgiana Hurdle in November he was sent to Leopardstown for the Grade I December Festival Hurdle.

His record at the Cheltenham Festival is particularly good and amongst currently active trainer only Willie Mullins has won more races at the Festival than Henderson. His main stable jockey was Mick Fitzgerald until Fitzgerald was forced to retire by an injury sustained in the 2008 Grand National; from the 2008–09 season until the 2014–15 season Barry Geraghty was Henderson's principal jockey in Britain. At the start of the 2015–16 season Nico de Boinville became Henderson's principal jockey after Geraghty replaced Tony McCoy as the principal jockey of J P McManus. One of Henderson's most popular horses in recent years, Caracciola, won the Cesarewitch Handicap flat race at Newmarket in 2008 at odds of 50/1 as an 11-year-old, despite mainly being a National Hunt horse.

The Turf Club was founded at the Curragh horse racing circuit in 1790 to regulate the racing of horses, but attempts to establish an Irish 1000 guineas in 1815 and an "O'Darby Stakes" in 1817 were unsuccessful until the most important flat race in the country, the Irish Derby was established on an annual basis from 1866 on. The Turf Club regulated to famous bare knuckle contests involving Dublin prize fighter Dan Donnelly against Tom Hall in 1814 and George Cooper in 1815, drawing estimated crowds of 20,000 to the Curragh. In 1846 the first railway excursion organised for a sporting event worldwide ran on the new Great Southern and Western Railway line to Curragh races. The first annual ball of the Kildare hunt was held in 1860, soon to become the social event of the year in the county.

He did not reappear then until December of that year, where he followed up by winning a National Hunt Flat Race at Leopardstown. He was then stepped straight up to Grade 1 class for the 1997 Cheltenham Festival, where he won the Champion Bumper by five lengths in his final appearance of that season. He reappeared in December 1997, where he won a Beginners Chase at Leopardstown. Following that, he was stepped up in class for the Grade 2 Dr.P.J. Moriarty Memorial Novice Chase, for which he was an odds on favourite and obliged with a 1-length victory over Boss Doyle. Following that victory, he was sent off the 11/8 favourite for the Royal & SunAlliance Chase, where he defied his relative inexperience over fences to record a 1½ length victory over Escartefigue, under Richard Dunwoody, maintaining his unbeaten record.

In a glittering amateur career, McNamara rode over 600 point-to-point winners, breaking Enda Bolger's career record in 2006 before himself being overhauled by current record holder, Derek O'Connor some years later. Under rules, he carried home almost every major prize restricted to amateurs as well as many others open to professionals after forming a hugely successful partnership with the Bolger yard. In his native Ireland, McNamara was ever-present at the National Hunt Festival at Punchestown for the duration of his career. His haul included five La Touche Cups (2010 L'Ami, 2007, 2004 Spot Thedifference, 2005 Good Step, 2002 Risk Of Thunder), three Ladies Cups (2011, Outlaw Pete, 2006 Abrams Bridge, 2003 Buailtes and Fadas), three Bishopscourt Cups (2004, 2003 Ever Onward, 1998 Master Julian), two Champion Hunters' Chases (2012, 2010 On The Fringe) and the Grade 1 Champion NH Flat Race (2001, Like-A-Butterfly, run at Leopardstown).

Limestone Lad, began the next season by making his debut in a flat race, finishing third in a two-mile maiden race at Navan and then finished second to the mare Liss A Paoraigh in the Lismullen Hurdle at the same track on 3 November. A week later he won the Brown Lad Hurdle again at Naas, leading all the way and winning by six lengths when conceding more than twenty pounds to his five opponents. Seven days later he attempted to record his second win in the Morgiana Hurdle and started third favourite behind Ned Kelly who was unbeaten in seven races over hurdles including the Herald Champion Novice Hurdle, and Youlneverwalkalone who had won the Hatton's Grace Hurdle in 2000. Limestone Lad led until overtaken by Ned Kelly at the second last but rallied to regain the lead on the running and won by half a length.

In 1909 he obtained a license to compete as a flat race jockey (see Horse Racing 2.1) debuting with Entrevero, a horse under the training of Mr. Elías Zamora, at the Hipódromo de Belgrano (Belgrano Hippodrome). The Hippodrome of Belgrano, also known as the Hipódromo Nacional (National Hippodrome) and Hipódromo Nacional Presidente General Bosch (National Hippodrome President General Bosch), was a racecourse active from 1887 until 1913 which officiated as the counterpart and competitor of the Hipódromo Argentino (Argentine Hippodrome) presently the Hipódromo Nacional de Palermo (National Hippodrome of Palermo). His first victory in 1909 was with Absalón, a thoroughbred from the Stable Los Pinos and a brother of Rubicela, with which he won the 1,400 meters race and a subsequent race defeating the legendary dappled thoroughbred Realista from the stables of trainer Mr. Juan Coll, which was ridden by jockey Pedro Claverie. Banegas third victory was with Ilota trained by Mr. Tellería with which he won another ten races.
