Kaneda first developed an interest in politics when a charter bus carrying Nihon Fukushi University students plunged into the Sai River in January 1985, killing the two drivers, a teacher and 22 first-year students. The cause of the accident was determined as driver fatigue due to being overworked. Maxim Shchyogolev was born in Voronezh, to Valery Konstantinovich Shchyogolev, a Soviet Army officer, and Irina Alexandrovna, a doctor. Here, as a first year student, he was noticed by the Moscow Luna Theatre's director Sergey Prokhanov who invited him to join his own troupe and transferred him to his own class in Russian Academy of Theatre Arts. During the Croatian War of Independence, in the Zagreb rocket attacks on 3 May 1995, the Academy's building was hit by cluster bombs fired on Zagreb's city centre (Donji grad). The dean's office and the dramaturgy department offices were badly damaged in the attack and two employees and four students were wounded, including Luka Skračić, a first-year student of film directing, who later died. In memory of this event, the Academy officially proclaimed 3 May as Academy Day and a plaque commemorating the attack was unveiled on its 10th anniversary in 2005. It was performed by the members themselves. Custodians, food service and maintenance workers, working in collaboration with Pottenger, developed and performed in a live piece about their lives and work. Hikari meets an older girl named Amane Ohtori early on in the story who is seen much like a prince from a fairy tale by other Spica students due to often riding a white horse named Star Bright. Amane is admired by many of the students from Spica as well as students from the other two schools, although she does not enjoy the attention. In the anime, Hikari admires her deeply, and she and Amane have mutual interest in each other. The final girl from Spica is Tsubomi Okuwaka, a young first year student who acts maturely for her age and gets on Yaya's nerves.

Zaborov was born in 1935 in Minsk to Abram Zaborov and Esfir Rappoport and, with his family, experienced the German invasion and occupation of Minsk in World War II. When his family returned to Minsk after the war, they found the city in ruins. In 1950 he enrolled in the Minsk Fine Arts School, leaving in 1953 for Leningrad and the entrance exams at the Academy of Fine Arts. Although he failed the exam, he was accepted the following year as a first year student. He describes his time at the Academy as a wonderfully self-contained existence, relatively isolated from the Soviet system.

The Day of Revolution revolves around Kei Yoshikawa, a boy in high school who one day is informed that he is genetically female. This shocking realization causes his family to grow closer together and Kei decides that he is going to restart his life as a girl named Megumi. Megumi takes a six-month leave from school and returns as a first-year student with Makoto Yutaka, the niece of the doctor who aided in Kei's transition; Makoto also helps Megumi adjust to living life as a girl. He started competitive swimming at the age of eight, and at 12, represented Singapore during the age groups. A former student of Anglo-Chinese School (Independent), Khoo served national service in 2014 as a Special Constable Sergeant (SC/SGT) at the Tanglin Police Division. She seems to have a thing about getting to the bottom of things when it comes to a mystery, which led to her trying to investigate Masashi-as-Yuna when she first came back; however, she found out what this prying felt like when some former students at her former school began stalking her, and seeing Mashashi rescue Rina from the stalkers allayed her suspicions. In 2015, Kilgore took second place in the competition and performed in the national monologue competition at the August Wilson Theatre in New York. Kilgore was a regular "capo", or chant and song leader, for the Rose City Riveters in support of the Portland Thorns FC. Kilgore made her professional theatrical debut as Rebecca Gibbs in Portland Center Stage's production of Our Town in the fall of 2015. Kilgore appeared in the Portland Center Stage production of Ain't Misbehavin' the same year. He develops a rude and narcissistic personality once he discovers he has the ability to take over another person's body for five seconds, but the true nature of his ability enables him to steal someone's superhuman ability by possessing them. Yuu is a first-year student at Hoshinoumi Academy, and he is forced to join its student council. Initially a fake honors student and chronic cheater, Yuu is reluctant to use his ability to aide the student council, but as time goes on, he becomes less narcissistic and much more selfless and caring towards others.

Maria-sama ga Miteru's story revolves around the students of the Lillian Girls' Academy and is character-driven, focusing on interactions between the characters rather than any sort of ongoing plot or goal to attain. When the story begins, Yumi Fukuzawa, a first-year student at Lillian, is praying in front of the Virgin Mary statue near the school entrance when she is suddenly approached by a cold second-year student named Sachiko Ogasawara who straightens Yumi's uniform neckerchief. This seemingly simple act of kindness stays with Yumi the rest of the day, and she speaks of her meeting with Sachiko to her friends during class and lunch. After school is over, Yumi's classmate Tsutako Takeshima meets with Yumi to show her that she took a photograph of Yumi's meeting with Sachiko earlier that morning.

Dance Academy is narrated mainly from the perspective of Tara Webster (Xenia Goodwin), a newly-accepted first year student at the National Academy of Dance in Sydney, which also doubles as a Year 10–12 high school for the dancers. The Cheese Grater was formed when "René Lavanchy", then a first-year student at UCL, decided to found a new magazine to plug what he saw as a gap in the provision of student media at the college, specifically as UCL Union regulations prevented the publication of most serious criticism of the Union at that time. Dissatisfied with the tone, content and production values of Pi Magazine, the only significant student publication at the time, he resolved to edit a new magazine himself and publish it on the cheap. Having approached a fellow halls resident, he secured him as treasurer and applied for the magazine to be affiliated as a society of UCL Union, so that it could publicise through the Union and use a UCL e-mail address. The society was affiliated on 12 February 2004.

The University Sports Union also carries out work with Associations that are not run by the University in order to improve the local area. For example, The Union partnered with basketballScotland in October 2011 to hold a tournament encouraging local school Children to take up Basketball, thereby increasing their fitness and interest in sport. Strathclyde Sports Union is also partnered with Scottish Student Sport(SSS) in an attempt to promote competitive sport to Scotland's Young people, while a partnership with BUCS aims to further increase participation in a wide range of sports already under undertaken at the University. The Union also partakes in the Annual Freshers Intervarsity Sports Day in which First Year student teams from Strathclyde, Glasgow and Glasgow Caledonian Universities can partake in order to socialise with other new students and also gain an idea of the sports on offer.

After Zenkichi succeeds in defeating Medaka through winning the election and somewhat deconstructing her self-perceived reason of existence, Ajimu attempts to commit suicide, but is stopped by Medaka, who correctly concludes that her true problem lies in simulated reality, and being extremely weary of life. Ajimu is enrolled as a first-year student and gradually starts to care for and be more loyal towards her human friends, and tries to use her abilities as little as possible to better appreciate being alive and enjoy her time masquerading as a normal human, however brief it may last.

Bina Rai was a first year student of Arts in the Isabella Thoburn College of Lucknow in 1950, when she came across an advertisement for a talent contest, she applied and received a call from the sponsors.
