The IOM X campaign is a multimedia initiative produced by the International Organization for Migration. The campaign aims to raise awareness and increase the prevention of human trafficking and modern slavery. The campaign began in 2014, based out of Bangkok, working in partnership with IOM offices in Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, and Bangladesh, to develop outreach activities that protect vulnerable people from exploitation. The campaign does this through applying a Communication for Development framework, which involves creating and tailoring media content around robust first-hand research to inspire positive behaviour change by target audiences.

Amherst College had strong ties to the Sapporo Agricultural College in Japan through its connection with Vice Minister for Education Tanaka Fujimaro, who had visited Amherst during the Iwakura Mission and subsequently returned from 1874-1877 for further first-hand research on the American school systems with the aim of modernizing and westernizing education in the Empire of Japan. He approached Amherst president Julius H. Seelye for advice on establishing a curriculum for use in the new state schools being established in Japan.

Jinder Oujla-Chalmers came up with the concept for Combat Hospital in 2008 and, together with Douglas Steinberg, pitched the show to Canwest (now Shaw Media). After the show was picked up for development, Oujla-Chalmers travelled to Afghanistan to conduct first-hand research at a small, forward-deployed military hospital. Oujla-Chalmers was able to use real images taken during the visit and stories heard from medical personnel to add realism to the show. Oujla-Chalmers and Steinberg brought the show to Sienna Films, who agreed to produce it and set up funding as a Canadian-British co-production with Artists Studio and Lookout Point in the UK. Canwest announced on July 9, 2010, that Combat Hospital was slated for production in the 2011–12 season.
