Stroszek were a post-punk/new wave/electronic band from Aberdeen, Scotland, (latterly based in Glasgow). The alley was originally created as a fire exit between the Shubert Theatre on West 45th Street and the Booth Theatre on West 44th Street, and the Astor Hotel to their east. Llewellyn was the only British cast member originally invited to participate in the American version of Red Dwarf, though Chris Barrie was, later, also approached to reprise his role of Rimmer as "no American actor could hate themselves" quite so well as the character needed. Barrie declined. In this series, Kryten was owned by the ship's Captain prior to the disaster that wiped out the crew, and passed the three million years by repeatedly reading a sign saying "FIRE EXIT" in a loop. The Kryten costume and make-up was redesigned so Robert Llewellyn was more comfortable while inside it.

On 23 December 1982, at around 2:00pm, an explosive device was detonated near the fire exit door of the Israeli Consulate General on 80 William Street, Sydney. The force of the blast injured two people and significant damage was caused to the consulate building. At around 6.45pm on that same day a second explosive device was detonated inside a vehicle parked outside of the Hakoah Club on 61-67 Hall Street, Bondi, NSW. With the 2001 inspection failure of an external metal fire-escape that had been grandfathered in by the City of Hartford years before, alumni members led a campaign to bring the building's fire exit door into compliance through the addition of a smaller second tower on the left rear side of the building. A fundraising campaign was launched to complete the structure within a year. The alley is called the Shubert Alley because the Shuberts, who were then New York's most powerful theater owners and producers, had their offices overlooking it and rented the alley.

The company has since worked with Stammer Productions (led by Colette Sadler), Never Did Nothing (led by Nick Underwood), Company Chordelia (led by Kally Lloyd-Jones), Glas(s) Performance (led by Tashi Gore and Jess Thorpe) and SeenUnSeen (led by Neil Doherty). This project provides these companies with comprehensive office resources, and a creative environment in which experience, advice and information can be shared by all companies involved.

Even when a match was played against Telford United of the Conference League in July 1998 the Hibs boys still took a mob down in a mini- bus and a handful of cars. After kicking in a fire-exit door and gaining free admission into the Bucks Head stadium they took up a position behind one of the goals which was used by home supporters and they were soon embroiled in a terracing battle with Telford boys. During the game the Hibs casuals were told that one of their boys who hadn't made it into the game had been stabbed so they left the ground immediately. Upon reaching the town centre it transpired that there had been no knife injury but in fact four Hibs boys had been beaten severely by a group of Telford hooligans.

Causton will compose a new work for the European Union Youth Orchestra to be premiered in 2012. Although the majority of his compositions are written for standard orchestral instruments and ensembles, some of Causton's material has featured unusual instrumentation not commonly used in Western classical music (such as gamelan ensembles or homemade instruments). He has also experimented with compositions utilising unusually placed sound sources - his radical 2001 arrangement of the Sanctus from Guillaume de Machaut's Messe de Nostre Dame featured two instrumental groups separated as far as possible (a strategy which anecdotally once broke up a Sinfonia 21 rehearsal when a "burly, tattooed Fire Officer" took exception to one of the groups blocking a fire exit). Causton has cited Pierre Boulez, Sir Michael Tippett, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Luciano Berio, György Ligeti, Olivier Messiaen, Elliott Carter, Carl Nielsen and Igor Stravinsky as particular musical inspirations.

In 1990 this was cut in half, creating three new units - one which was initially occupied by Miss Selfridge, then by HMV from 1994 to 2013, and then by fashion retailer Select from 2014; one for Superdrug, which was at the time under common ownership with Woolworths; and one for Argos facing onto Broadway. The remainder continued as a smaller Woolworths. In 2000, Woolworths moved to the former Safeway unit on the western side of the centre (near to W H Smith), where they would remain until the UK Woolworths chain collapsed in 2008: this move saw the vacated smaller Woolworths divided again; this allowed Superdrug and Argos to extend to their current sizes, and also allowed the development of three new shop units, taken up by GAME, Phones4U and Sussex Stationers. Former office space above Woolworths was let to Reed, with public access to this space created by converting a former Woolworths fire exit.
