Following the model of the promotional campaign for "The Force Awakens," it offers only brief glimpses of characters and settings, but seems to suggest the story of Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), a rare female protagonist in this science-fiction universe and a reckless loner caught between the all-powerful Empire and an emerging Rebellion.

Simply more of the same won't work for Dishonored 2, and while Arkane's follow-up to its Thief-ish hit of 2012 offers the option of choosing between a male or female protagonist, it's how that selection works within what'll presumably be a similarly structured campaign for both characters that'll really make its world either feel alive or flat.

Barry and Seema's pairing mimics the dynamics of the romance in Super Sad True Love Story, which is a shame: Shteyngart is so good at writing terrible people that I'd love to see what he could do if he let himself write a female protagonist who was not busy serving as the more functional, more glamorous, and less charismatic counterpart to the nebbishy hero.

There were all of these clichéd male fantasies—the nude female neighbor walking into the bachelor pad, the sexy young call girls with their Madame in Victorian-inspired negligees and hairdos, the lecherous boss, orgies, nudist hippies, swinging couples, threesomes, artists, and every sex joke imaginable—and I put a female protagonist in the center of it all as a witness, so that we can think about what that time was, who it was for, what it looked and felt like.

In order to pass, a film is awarded points: two points for a female director, one point for a female composer or director of photography, one point for three female producers or three female department heads, one point for a crew that's 50% women, two points if there's a female protagonist who determines story outcomes, two points if no female characters were victimized, stereotyped or sexualized, and one point if a sex scene shows foreplay before consummation, or if the female characters initiate or reciprocate sexual advances.
