The oil crisis of 1981 and the relocation of wagonload traffic from Jöhstadt to Bärenstein due to the closure of the Wolkenstein–Jöhstadt narrow- gauge railway led to the abandonment of this plan. In the 1980s only four pairs of passenger trains ran between Bärenstein and Cranzahl on weekdays and on Saturdays and Sundays only two ran. Between Cranzahl and Flöha, however, there were eight daily services, including a semi-fast service to and from Leipzig Central Station.

The Lynx was the Interislander's fast ferry service across Cook Strait. Pressured by Christchurch businessman Brooke McKenzie and his ill-fated Sea Shuttles NZ fast ferry service, the Interisland Line chartered the to operate a fast service across the strait for the 1994/95 summer. The "Vomit Comet", as it was sometimes dubbed, was an initial success, taking half the time of the regular Interislander ferries. Condor 10 returned to serve as The Lynx every summer until 1999, when it was replaced by the for the 1999/2000 summer.

Two trains per hour (one per hour on Sundays) operate a stopping service, calling at most stations between and Manchester Oxford Road. An hourly semi-fast service runs to Manchester Airport.

When in the 1930s, in the course of the Fascist government's program of railways development, a new locomotive was needed to provide a fast service on the newly electrified Milan-Rome mainline at 3,000 V DC. This was also permitted by the introduction of new metallic passenger cars, capable of relative higher speeds. The requirement was shipped to the FS design team of Ing. Giuseppe Bianchi at Florence. The new locomotive was impressive for the times: huge, heavy, powerful and fast. They were longer than the E.626, the first Italian DC electric locomotives, and weighed more.

Currently (summer 2019), the Monday-Saturday off-peak service comprises three trains per hour in each direction. One, operated by Transport for Wales, runs between Birmingham International and Shrewsbury, with alternate trains continuing to Aberystwyth & or Holyhead via . The other trains are West Midlands Railway services between Shrewsbury and Birmingham New Street, with one calling at all stations between Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton and the other a limited stop semi-fast express. Sunday services consist of an hourly fast service (Chester or Aberystwyth to Birmingham International) operated by Arriva Trains Wales and an hourly stopping service (Shrewsbury to Birmingham), operated by West Midlands Trains.

Blue Streak 88-seater RM 125 at Palmerston North railway station in 1974. In 1968, at the suggestion of Hamilton City Council, an 88-seater was refurbished for a new fast service between Hamilton and Auckland aimed at business customers, and it started on Monday, 8 April 1968. It was fitted with carpet and re-upholstered fabric- covered seats, and was painted in a new two-tone blue colour scheme that prompted the nickname Blue Streak. The seating was reduced to 84 to accommodate a servery area from which light meals and assorted alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks could be purchased.

The opening of the line and the conversion of the Ardrossan railway to run in connection, enabled a fast service—26½ hours—between Glasgow and London to be instituted. The fast steamer Fire King plied on alternate days between Ardrossan and Liverpool; from May 1841 the English terminal was transferred to Fleetwood following the opening of the Preston & Wyre Railway and Dock Company. The service only lasted a few days and was not a commercial success; the GPK&AR; sold the vessel to James Burns, who continued the service but "soon withdrew it", transferring the boat to a route to Ireland.

In the current (summer 2017) timetable, the station is served by two trains per hour to/from Edinburgh - one of these is the hourly semi-fast service to and the other runs to Perth. The single track nature of this line limits the frequency of services possible to and from Perth, though track upgrades & replacement work has improved matters somewhat by reducing the end- to-end journey time between here and Hilton Junction. A few Perth trains continue north along the Highland Main Line to . On Sundays, most trains run between Edinburgh & Perth, though a few Aberdeen services call in the morning & evening.

Trains passing at New Milton Services that call here are: Weymouth semi-fast service, the Poole stopping service and trains to London Waterloo via Southampton and Basingstoke. The station is able to accommodate trains of up to five coaches, longer trains only open the doors in the first four or five coaches depending on the type of unit operating the service. The station is equipped with toilets, a waiting room, bicycle lockers, electronic passenger information screens, a ticket office as well as ticket machines, and has a large pay-and-display car park with 73 spaces for commuters.

In order to provide fast service for the opening of the Pennsylvania Railroad's East River Tunnels in 1910, the Long Island Rail Road completely rebuilt the Main Line between Winfield and Jamaica from one track to four tracks, with two additional tracks between the Glendale Cut-Off and Winfield. 40 grade crossings were eliminated as part of the project. In addition, the line was electrified using a third rail. This was expected to reduce the running time between Jamaica and Sunnyside Yard from 18 minutes to 12 minutes. To speed up service through Kew Gardens, the LIRR undertook the construction of the Maple Grove Cut-Off for $500,000.

From the mid-1960s until 1998, it was served only by local stopping trains between Stafford and either Rugby or (from 1987) GB National Timetable May 1984 Edition, Table 65GB National Timetable May 1988 Edition, Table 67 \- these were withdrawn in 2004 when work began to upgrade the main line to four tracks, with bus replacements operating until London Midland introduced the present semi-fast service between London Euston and Crewe via Stafford in 2008. The station was the location of Queen Elizabeth II's naming of Class 67 locomotive No. 67029 Royal Diamond, marking her diamond wedding anniversary with Prince Philip, on 12 October 2007.

A Paderborn–Kreiensen/Göttingen service was established with sections uncoupling in Ottbergen (thus offering a transfer-free connection between Paderborn and Göttingen) at the timetable change in December 2015 (RB 84/RB 85). In 1910, there were five pairs of passenger trains with a travel time of 82 minutes, in 1937 there were ten pairs, in the 1950s there were 13 to 16 pairs, including several long-distance express trains that stopped only in Adelebsen. Until 1989, an Eilzug (semi-fast) service ran between the Ruhr and Göttingen, which was upgraded to an express (D-Züge) in 1983. The carriages ran to Bodenfelde as through coaches in the last few years.

In January 1992, in the CityRail timetable, a morning Sydney bound and evening return V set service were called the Newcastle Flyer."CityRail launches new timetable" Railway Digest February 1992 page 45 The name was dropped from the November 1996 timetable."CityRail Named Train Changes" Railway Digest December 1996 page 8 In November 2017, nearly 3 years after the truncation of the line to Newcastle, a timetable change brought a new Sydney-Newcastle fast service which would depart a newly built Newcastle Interchange at 5:03am and arrive at Central at 7:26am. The return service departed Central at 3:45pm and arrived at Newcastle Interchange at 6:12pm.

At Raynes Park it switched to the fast line and called at Wimbledon at 8:14, then nonstop to Waterloo arriving at 8:25 at platform 13. The headcode was 42 and it was composed of 4SUB or EPB stock. Typically, it crawled through Raynes Park waiting for a signal to clear following an overtaking steam train on the fast line. Very occasionally it was forced to stop at Raynes Park, which with the slam door train stock required it to stop there formally and take on passengers who were only too happy to take advantage of a rare fast service destined for the main line.

SS Willem III first ship of the SMN in Nieuwediep in 1871 The Stoomvaart Maatschappij Nederland was based in Amsterdam, but initially its ships could not reach that city. From 1870 to 1879 the company's ships therefore sailed from Den Helder (Nieuwediep) to Java. The company also had its own warehouses in Nieuwediep for loading and unloading to smaller ships, that could reach Amsterdam via the Noordhollandsch Kanaal. Passengers, mail and some freight that required fast service could go by train to and from Naples, Marseilles or Genoa in order to keep the travelling time as short as possible, but this was not done on the first trips.

Hatch End station is on the West Coast Main Line but served only by 'all stations' trains on the Watford DC Line, with four trains per hour operated by London Overground to London Euston (southbound) and Watford Junction (northbound). This is the standard service, seven days a week. The typical journey time to Euston is 38 minutes and to Watford Junction 11 minutes.Network Rail timetable May-Dec 2012 Connections are available at Harrow & Wealdstone for a West Midlands Trains (London Northwestern Railway) fast service to London Euston or the Southern service to East Croydon, or the Bakerloo line calling at all stations to Elephant & Castle.

Ten years later a developer of the Glandale Galleria, who was a patron of Panda Inn, asked Andrew to start a fast-service version of his restaurant in the new mall.

In public transit, particularly tram or train transportation, a limited-stop (or sometimes referred to as semi-fast service) service is a service that stops less frequently than a local service. Many limited-stop or semi-fast services are a combination of commuter rail and express train. The term is normally used on routes with a mixture of fast and slow services, and can differ in meaning, depending on how it is used by different transit agencies. The main benefits of limited-stop or semi-fast services is the ability to utilise skip-stop calling pattern to maximise capacity along the line, as opposed to a commuter service stopping at every station which slows trailing express trains down.

Because Ashford International connects High Speed 1 to the Marshlink line, it creates potential for a fast service from St Pancras to Hastings and Eastbourne. In November 2017, the Secretary of State for Transport, Chris Grayling, proposed a modification of the track layout at Ashford International to accommodate such a service. The scheme was supported by Amber Rudd, a former Hastings MP. To connect the two lines, the junction at the west end of the station would need to be rebuilt, with 25 kV 50 Hz AC overhead wires being installed along platform 2. This would relieve pressure from platforms 5 and 6, which currently handle all High Speed 1 domestic services.

West Midlands Railway also provide the majority of the services on the lower level platforms. A half- hourly local stopping service between Birmingham New Street and operated by and EMUs, calls at all stops between Birmingham and Wolverhampton, with most trains continuing to after Birmingham New Street. An hourly long-distance service to run by London Northwestern Railway also calls, originating at Birmingham New Street operated by Class 350 EMU. Transport for Wales operates an hourly semi-fast service to and then either / or and (alternate hours) using their Class 158 DMU units, and to in the opposite direction, providing Smethwick Galton Bridge with a direct rail link to Birmingham International Airport.

DB Class 113 locomotive By 1991 it had become clear that the deployment of the 11 locomotives of the first two series of class 112 in heavy and fast service had taken its toll. Several gear wheel malfunctions during service caused heavy damage to motor and transmission of the affected units. The maximum speed was reduced to as an emergency measure, and the locomotives were only utilized as express trains in the Munich area. At the time they were already re-designated as class 113, in order to free up the designation of class 112 in the new German number scheme (for the more numerous and modern class 212 locomotives of the former East German Deutsche Reichsbahn of the GDR).

A Class 444 forming a London service From 9 December 2007, the Wareham stopping service was replaced by a semi-fast service from London Waterloo to Weymouth. This is an extension of the stopping service that previously terminated at Poole and stops at all stations to Weymouth. The existing Weymouth service has become an express between Poole and Weymouth only stopping at Hamworthy, Wareham, Wool (at peak hours only), Dorchester South and Weymouth but call additionally at Parkstone and Branksome. The current London Waterloo to Southampton Central service was extended to Poole (though it was originally proposed that this service terminate at Bournemouth) as a stopping service to compensate for the loss of the Wareham train and maintain service levels from the station.

In the early 20th century Atlantic City and the South Jersey seashore were major seaside vacation destinations for the Philadelphia area's wealthy and working class populations. The popularity of South Jersey's seashore was made possible by rail transport which provided inexpensive and fast service between the Philadelphia area's population centers and the seashore. There were two competing railroad companies connecting Camden (and by ferry to Philadelphia), with the resorts of the Southern New Jersey seashore. Competition was fierce and by its height in the 1920s competition between the West Jersey and Seashore Railroad (WJ&S;, owned by the Pennsylvania Railroad) and the Atlantic City Railroad (owned by the Philadelphia and Reading Railway) was so intense that at one time both lines boasted some of the fastest trains in the world.

A recast of the Argyle Line timetable in the wake of the Whifflet Line electrification has seen some significant changes to the service pattern. All services to Motherwell & Glasgow Central now run via Shieldmuir & Bellshill (every half-hour) rather than alternating via this route and Holytown & Hamilton and they also now terminate at Central High Level rather than running through to Partick and beyond via Rutherglen & Central Low Level (passengers now must change at for these destinations).GB National Rail Timetable May 2016, Table 225 The only exception is a single weekday train from to Dalmuir in the morning peak, which returns from to Carstairs in the evening & uses the route via Holytown. The two-hourly semi-fast service between Glasgow Central & Edinburgh still calls all day (except on Sundays) and now is extended through to/from .

Restoring service to Suburban Station may increase ridership but would require using the upper level of 30th Street Station and either scheduling trains to turn at Suburban Station or to continue through the Center City Commuter Tunnel (with Amtrak trains turning around at Wayne Junction). Bypassing 30th Street Station by using the New York-Pittsburgh Subway would allow trains to skip a time- consuming stop and reverse of directions at 30th St Station and allow fast service between New York and Harrisburg. Historically, the PRR fast trains going to NY from the west would bypass 30th St Station, and passengers for Philadelphia would change trains at North Philadelphia. One study suggested two daily electric-train round-trips between New York and Harrisburg with stops in North Philadelphia and Ardmore, a routing last used by Keystone trains in 1994.

At the time, he became interested in opening a dairy queen, with a burger section, when he met business partner and fellow restaurateur and Cornell University alumni James McLamore, and they developed Insta-Burger King, the forerunner of the concept of the Burger King model of fast service, limited menu and low prices, and customers coming in to the restaurant to pay for orders in advance, as opposed to the traditionally method of carhops attending customers directly bringing their orders to their vehicles, after 12 years with Burger King, he established the Bodega Steakhouse Restaurant Chain which had locations throughout Florida, Chicago, Detroit and Dallas, until selling in 1978. After in 1985, he brought further restaurants throughout San Francisco and Monterey, before in 1993 purchasing shares in 3 Fuddrukers Restaurants. He also served on the advisory board of Avantcare, Inc.

King Class locomotive 6008 King James II hauling a Paddington to express in 1950 hauling an express from Paddington to Birkenhead Woodside near in 1962 During the heyday of the route, many prestigious trains ran from Paddington to the northwest of England via the Joint Line, reaching Wolverhampton, , , and . Various through services from Marylebone to the GCR network also ran via the Joint Line between London and Ashendon Junction. At nationalisation in 1948, the line passed to the Western Region of British Railways, which continued to operate Paddington – Birmingham – Wolverhampton - Birkenhead fast trains through the 1950s in competition with the London Midland Region's (LMR) from via the West Coast Main Line (WCML). The Paddington – Birmingham – Wolverhampton - Birkenhead fast service was sharply increased in frequency to up to 15 trains a day each way from the 1959–60 timetable to compensate for the withdrawal of most LMR trains during electrification of the WCML.

Local services from Leamington and Stratford terminated at Moor Street, and the remaining services from Paddington and the South Coast were diverted into New Street. Snow Hill closed completely, along with most of the line to Wolverhampton, on 4 March 1972. Although a two-hourly locomotive-hauled semi- fast service from Paddington to Birmingham continued via High Wycombe, Princes Risborough, Bicester, Banbury, Leamington and Solihull, in the early 1970s all but one daily peak-hour return journey were diverted via and Oxford, and later via , and in the 1980s that was truncated to run to Banbury only. All other passenger services were operated by DMUs to and from Marylebone, extended from High Wycombe to Banbury (for connections to Birmingham), on a two-hourly frequency. On 24 March 1974 the line from Marylebone to Banbury transferred from the Western Region to the London Midland Region and all stations between South Ruislip and Bicester were also transferred to LMR giving LMR the responsibility of all passenger services out of Marylebone.

The Flying Scotsman name has been maintained by the operators of the InterCity East Coast franchise since privatisation of British Rail; the former Great North Eastern Railway even subtitled itself The Route of the Flying Scotsman. The Flying Scotsman was operated by GNER from April 1996 until November 2007, then by National Express East Coast until November 2009, East Coast until April 2015, and Virgin Trains East Coast until June 2018. Since then it has been operated by the government-owned London North Eastern Railway. On 23 May 2011 the Flying Scotsman brand was relaunched for a special daily fast service operated by East Coast departing Edinburgh at 05:40 and reaching London in exactly four hours, calling only at Newcastle, operated by an InterCity 225 Mallard set. 91 class locomotive 91101 and Driving Van Trailer 82205 were turned out in a special maroon livery for the launch of the service."East Coast launches fast 'Flying Scotsman" Rail 1 June 2011 page 14"EC launches new timetable with 4h Edinburgh-London Flying Scotsman" Today's Railways UK issue 115 July 2011 page 12 East Coast said bringing back named trains would restore "a touch of glamour and romance".
