In 2008, SRLFD had over 876 calls. 53 calls involved fire. There were also 10 extrications. During the December 2008 Northeast ice storm, SRLFD ran 135 calls from 12/12 until 12/15.

The Melville community is protected by the Melville Volunteer Fire Department. Established in 1947, they are capable of handling all emergencies including any type of fire, heavy rescue (extrications), emergency ambulances, haz-mat and other related tasks. The fire department responds to more than 3,500 alarms in a year and provides protection 24hrs a day, 7 days a week, with an annual budget of $1.5 million.

By keeping buildings up to code, controlling illegal occupancies, monitoring the safety of living-areas and issuing licenses and permits, the department works to control the potential for dangerous situations. The fire district operates three fire stations spread out all over the town, as their district covers a large area. The department is capable of handling fires, rescues, extrications and natural disasters.

Class I, or light duty squad trucks are the smallest, and usually the cheapest squad trucks. They can range from a converted ambulance or Chevy Suburban type truck, to custom built trucks on Ford F550 chassis. Class II, or medium duty squad trucks are substantially bigger in both the physical size of the truck and its weight. Medium duty squad trucks can range from smaller fire engines specifically designed for extrications to International truck cabs and chassis.

Shell Lake Police Department serves the city with three full-time officers and two part-time officers. Its Chief of Police is David Wilson. Established in 1898, the Shell Lake Fire Department serves the City of Shell Lake and 180 square miles of territory in the towns of Barronett, Bashaw, Beaver Brook, and Sarona in Washburn County and the towns of Dewey and Roosevelt in Burnett County. The Shell Lake Fire Department assists the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources in wildland fire protection, cold water and ice rescue training, water rescues, auto extrications, and other services.

Because this method prevents anterior, posterior, and lateral shifts, it is very useful for high-angle rescues and awkward extrications where the backboard must be rotated sideways or tilted vertically. Grady straps are also effective in situations where the backboard must be positioned in a way other than supine, such as left lateral recumbent (or recovery position) for pregnant patients. This method also allows the backboard to be tilted in order to facilitate patient care in cases of emetic episodes where protecting the airway against aspiration is crucial. Another benefit of Grady straps is that they can be applied in a quick, timely manner which enables rapid transport for trauma patients.

The Chicago Fire Department currently operates 4 Special Operations Squad Companies ( Squad 1, Squad 2, Squad 5, and Squad 7 O'Hare ) In addition to having at least one Squad Company respond to all working fires in Chicago, Squad companies are specially trained and respond to technical rescue incidents throughout the city including but not limited to: Confined space incidents, trench rescues, structural collapses, high-angle rope rescues, advanced extrications, and dive incidents. Squad companies run with 6 members on a daily basis out of two pieces of apparatus that run in tandem. The "Box" has 4 members including the company officer, and the "Snorkel" with its 55-ft elevated articulating master stream is manned by an additional 2 members.

Dover has a fire protection district and contracts with the J. H. Ketcham Hose Company for fire and ambulance service. The fire company operates two stations: Station One is on Rt 22 in Dover Plains and Station Two is on Rt 55 in Wingdale. The department is capable of handling fires, rescues, extrications, medical emergencies, hazardous material incidents and natural disasters. JHK operates a varied fire apparatus fleet based out of two stations, consisting of two engines (36-11, 36-12) one rescue pumper (36-13), one aerial (36-45), two utility / brush trucks (36-61, 36-62) and one BLS Ambulance (36-71) that responds to emergencies for second calls in the district from 5pm to 5am.

The departments operate a varied fire apparatus fleet, along with basic life support and advanced life support emergency medical services (EMS) within the Arlington Fire District.

The 1919 Motor Transport Corps convoy was a "Truck Train" of the US Army Motor Transport Corps that drove over from Washington, D.C. (departing July 7 and arriving September 6), to Oakland, California, and ferried to San Francisco. In addition to 230 road incidents (stops for adjustments, extrications, breakdowns, & accidents) resulting in 9 vehicles retiring, the convoy of "24 expeditionary officers, 15 War Department staff observation officers (e.g., Bvt Lt Col Dwight D. Eisenhower of the Tank Corps), and 258 enlisted men" had 21 injured en route who did not complete the trip. Although some "were really competent drivers" by the end, the majority of soldiers were "raw recruits with little or no military training"; and except for the Motor Supply Company E commander (1st Lt Daniel H. Martin), troop officers had "meager knowledge" of "handling men in the field".
