In some states where oil palm is established, lax enforcement of environmental legislation leads to encroachment of plantations into riparian strips, and release of pollutants such as palm oil mill effluent (POME) in the environment. It is being executed on priority basis to harness indigenous hydropower resources to improve the ratio of hydel electricity in the national grid and help provide relief to the consumers. On its completion, Gulpur Hydropower project will generate about 465 Gwh of inexpensive electricity annually to earn revenue of about Rs 1 billion. Being an environment friendly hydropower project, it will help reduce dependence on expensive thermal power, thereby saving foreign exchange amounting to $36 million (equivalent to Rs 3 billion) to the country. The Government of Maharashtra through the MMRDA, in order to improve the traffic and transportation scenario in Mumbai and to cater to the future travel needs in the next 2-3 decades began exploring the viability of various alternative mass transit systems which are efficient, economically viable and environment friendly. In this context, a detailed feasibility study was carried out under Indo-German technical co-operation by entrusting the consultancy work to Tewet in association with DE-Consult GmbH and Tata Consultancy Services, during 1997–2000. Anil Prakash Joshi was born on 6 April 1955 at Kotdwar, in Pauri Garhwal district, in the present day Uttarakhand state of India in a family of farmers and secured a master's degree in botany and a doctoral degree in ecology. He started his career as a member of faculty at the Kotdwar Government PG College but resigned the job in 1979 and founded Himalayan Environmental Studies and Conservation Organization (HESCO), a non governmental organization. Under the aegis of HESCO, Joshi promoted research and development of new environment- friendly technologies for the agricultural sector, tapping the local resources. He is supported by a team of 30 people, and the group is known to have been involved in the dissemination of knowledge on eco-friendly techniques and technologies in 40 villages in the state.

The Hybrid Trimaran Project, known fully as the "Hybrid Trimaran Fast Craft Passenger Cargo Vessel using Multi-Engine and Alternative Energy Source from Ocean Waves", was a concept by Filipino engineer Jonathan Salvador of Metallica Consultancy and is intended to come up with a design for a ship which has a "modern design, environment-friendly, safe and unsinkable". The project funded by the Department of Science and Technology is a collaboration of the Aklan State University (ASU), the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development, Metallica and the Aklan Congressional Office. The project was delayed due issues of government- related bureaucracy. As part of the project, a prototype of a ship powered by both gas and waves will be constructed and if found feasible will be offered to interested parties.

Initial ideas behind the eco-cities can be traced back to 1975 with the formation of a non-profit organization called Urban Ecology. Founded by a group of visionary architects and activists including Richard Register in Berkeley, California, the organization worked at the intersection of urban planning, ecology, and public participation to help formulate design concepts centered around building environmentally healthier cities. Some of their efforts included initiating movements to plant trees along the main streets, promoting the construction of solar greenhouses, developing environment-friendly policies by working with the Berkeley city planning division and encouraging public transportation. Building on these strategies, Richard Register later coined the term 'ecocity' in his 1987 book titled "Ecocity Berkeley: Building Cities for a Healthy Future" describing it as a city where human beings live in harmony with nature and therefore greatly reducing their ecological footprint.
