Departments of Chemistry, Physics, Government, Sociology, Literature, Mathematics and Economics opened along with the Language Centre (later the Department of Language and Linguistics) and the Computing Centre (later the Department of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering) with Denis Mesure elected as the first President of the Students' Council. Work started on the first residential tower, Rayleigh, in December with The Queen approving the grant of Charter to take effect from 11 January 1965. 1965 brought 399 students enrolling for the start of the new academic year; the number of academic staff more than doubled to 61; and the first degrees, five MSc and five MA degrees were awarded.

On August 12, 1861, Patrick H. Monaghan became one of the early responders to U.S. President Abraham Lincoln's call for volunteers to defend Washington, D.C. following the mid- April 1861 fall of Fort Sumter to the Confederate States Army. Burdwan University A. R. Chakravarty, born on 20 May 1953 in Burdwan, a historic city in the Indian state of West Bengal, graduated in chemistry from the University of Burdwan in 1973 and completed a master's degree from the same university in 1975, passing both the examinations with first rank. Enrolling for doctoral studies at Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science under the guidance of Animesh Chakravorty, a Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar laureate, he secured a PhD from the Science College, Calcutta University in 1982. His post-doctoral studies were in the US at the laboratory of F. Albert Cotton at Texas A&M; University during 1982–85 and he returned to India the same year to join the Indian Institute of Science as an assistant professor. He became an associate professor in 1997, a professor in 1997 and continues to hold the post till date.

Born on 3 January 1949 in Pollachi, a border town in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, Kuppamuthu Dharmalingam did his schooling at Gandhi Kala Nilayam High School and secured his graduate and master's degrees in zoology from Thiagarajar College, Madurai before enrolling for PhD at Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) under the guidance of J. Jayaraman, working on yeast mitochondrial membrane biogenesis. After obtaining his doctoral degree, he did his post-doctoral research with Edward D. Goldberg at Tufts University School of Medicine on genetics of bacteriophages. Returning to India, he joined MKU and spent his entire academic career there but had a short stint at University of Geneva in between. During his early researches on Escherichia coli, a gram-negative bacterium, he discovered the induction of mutagenic DNA repair during restriction of nonglucosylated T4 DNA and the alleviation of restriction by SOS functions.

At the end of the first year, an educational institution is obligated to issue advice on a student's suitability, whether the institution awards the propaedeutic diploma or not. In the vast majority of cases, this will be positive advice. The two possible consequences of not obtaining the propaedeutic diploma in one year are a negatief advies (literally, negative advice) which implies that the university or hogeschool recommends the student to enroll in a different study program, and a bindend negatief advies (literally, "binding negative advice") which prohibits the student from continuing or re-enrolling for the same study program at the institution. Furthermore, most hogescholen (university of applied sciences) have included in their statutes that should a student fail to meet the requirements for the propaedeutic diploma within a set period of time, usually set at two years, the student cannot continue to obtain a bachelor's degree.

Shelley became increasingly politicised under Hogg’s influence, developing strong radical and anti- Christian views. Such views were dangerous in the reactionary political climate prevailing during Britain’s war with Napoleonic France, and Shelley’s father warned him against Hogg’s influence.

Presidency University, Kolkata Chowdhury was born in Dhaka of British India (presently in Bangladesh) to Jogendra Kumar Chowdhury and Indira Chowdhury (nee' Guhathakurta), graduated in chemistry from Calcutta University in 1955 and completed his master's degree in 1957 from the Rajabazar Science College, Calcutta University. Enrolling for his doctoral research under the guidance of the renowned chemist and Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar laureate, Sadhan Basu, he secured a PhD and moved to the US for his post-doctoral research which lasted three years, working at the Pennsylvania State University during 1961–62 and at the University of Chicago from 1962 to 1964. On his return to India the same year, he started his career as a pool officer at Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS) and stayed there till 1966 when he joined Presidency College, Kolkata (the present-day Presidency University) as a faculty of the department of chemistry. He served the college for over a decade as a professor of chemistry.

IISc - Main Building Kaushal Kishore, born on the last day of 1942 in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, did his graduate studies in chemistry at Lucknow University and obtained his master's degree from the same institution before enrolling for doctoral studies at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University where he studied under the guidance of R. P. Rastogi to secure a PhD for his thesis on mechanism of combustion of non-hypergolic propellants. His career started at Gorakhpur University as a teaching faculty but he moved to the Indian Institute of Science in 1974 where he rose in ranks to head the department of inorganic and physical chemistry from 1994. His early researches were on thermochemistry and combustion of polymers with focus on the kinetics and thermodynamics of combustion, particularly with solid propellants. These researches assisted him in discovering autopyrolysis, a term he coined for a phenomenon related to accelerated combustion caused by polyperoxides, details of which he published in one of his articles.

National Chemical Laboratory Born on 10 April 1971 in the south Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, D. Srinivasa Reddy graduated in chemistry in 1991 from Osmania University and completed his master's degree from the same institution in 1993. Enrolling for his doctoral studies under the guidance of Goverdhan Mehta, a noted chemist and former vice chancellor of University of Hyderabad, he moved to Indian Institute of Science when Mehta took up the position as the head of the department of organic chemistry at IISc. His PhD came from Hyderabad University in 2000, and he proceeded to the US where he did his post-doctoral work at the laboratories of Sergey A. Kozmin of the University of Chicago and Jeffrey Aubé of University of Kansas during 2001–03. He started his career in 2003 as a principal scientist at Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories and became a research investigator in 2006 but a year later, he moved to Advinus Therapeutics as the group leader of their Discovery Chemistry research wing.

Vadapalli Chandrasekhar, born on 6 November 1958 in Kolkata, in the Indian state of West Bengal, graduated in chemistry in 1975 and completed his post graduate studies in 1977 at Osmania University before enrolling for doctoral studies at Indian Institute of Science under the guidance of S. S. Krishnamurthy. After securing a PhD in 1982, he moved to the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1983 and completed his post-doctoral studies at the laboratory of Robert R. Holmes in 1986. He returned to India the same year and started his career as a senior research officer at Indian Petrochemicals Corporation Limited but his stay there lasted only one year. In 1987, he joined IIT Kanpur as an assistant professor to commence a service which would extend till 2012; during this period, he held various positions such as that of an associate professor (1991–1995), professor (1995–), head of the department of chemistry (2008–2010) and dean of faculty affairs (2011–2012).

University of Madras R. Ramesh, born on 2 June 1956 in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu, did his graduate studies in physics (1976) at the University of Madras and completed his master's degree at the same university in 1978. Enrolling for his doctoral studies under the supervision of Kunchithapadam Gopalan of Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), he secured a PhD from Gujarat University in 1984 and did his post doctoral studies at his mentor's laboratory during 1985–86. He joined the Planetary and Geosciences Division of PRL as a research associate in 1987 and has served the institution in such various capacities as a Scientist-Grade D (1987–94), Reader (1994–98), Associate Professor (1999–2001), Professor (2002–07) and Senior Professor (since 2008) and holds the position of a Foundation for GLocal Science Initiatives (FGSI) Outstanding Scientist. In between, he had a short stint at Scripps Institution of Oceanography during 1992–93 as a visiting research associate, working under the guidance of Devendra Lal.

IIT Kharagpur S. K. Nath, born on 3 January 1960 in the Indian state of West Bengal, graduated in geology (BSc hons) in 1979 from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur and completed his master's degree in exploration geophysics from the same institution in 1981, passing both the examinations with first rank; his thesis for the master's degree earned him a Silver Medal for the best thesis. After working as a CSIR junior research fellow at IIT Kharagpur for 6 months, he started his career as a junior geophysicist with Indicos Computer Services, a Mumbai-based firm, in 1982. Two years later, he moved to Oil India station in Assam where he worked as a geoscientist and senior geoscientist till 1988. Returning to his home state in January that year, he had a short stint of 7 months at Computech Ispat, Kolkata as the processing manager before enrolling for doctoral studies at IIT Kharagpur, simultaneously working as a lecturer.

University of Calcutta Born on 17 February 1970 in a farmers' family at the village of Birsingha in Medinipur District of the Indian state of West Bengal, Pradyut Ghosh graduated in chemistry in 1990 and followed it up with a master's degree in 1992 from the Rajabazar Science College, Calcutta University. Enrolling for his doctoral studies under the guidance of Parimal K. Bharadwaj at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, he secured a PhD in 1998 and moved to the US to pursue his post-doctoral studies under Richard M. Crooks. Returning to India in 2000, he joined Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute (CSMCRI) as a scientist and in 2001, he received an Alexander von Humboldt fellowship which enabled him to continue his professional studies with Fritz Vögtle and Christoph Schalley at Kekulé Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of University of Bonn. He resumed his duties at CSMCRI in 2002 as a C-Grade Scientist, a post he held till 2007 during which time he had a second spell at Bonn University from April to October 2003.

University, the Senate of Serampore College (University) {a University under Section 2 (f) of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956}The Senate of Serampore College (University) is a University within the meaning of Section 2 (f) of the UGC Act, 1956 under which a University means a University established or incorporated by or under a Central Act, a Provincial Act or a State Act, and includes any such institution as may, in consultation with the University concerned, be recoginsed by the Commission in accordance with the regulations made in this behalf under this Act. The UGC took the opinion that the Senate fell under the purview of Section 2 (f) of the said Act since The Serampore College Act, 1918 was passed by the Government of West Bengal.with degree-granting authority validated by a Danish Charter and ratified by the Government of West Bengal where he studied the graduate degree of Bachelor of Divinity from 1966-1970. After a two-year ministerial work, Theodore again studied from 1972-1974 enrolling for a postgraduate degree of Master of Theology specializing in Old Testament under E. C. John G. M. Butterworth, and Gerhard Wehmeier, working out a dissertation entitled The concept of creation in the Book of Deutero-IsaiahS.
