The Monthly Register and encyclopedian magazine was a British periodical published from 1802 to 1803 that was published by Charles and John Wyatt and edited by John Dyer Collier (1762–1825), the father of John Payne Collier, and ODNB Henry Crabb Robinson's essays on Kant – amongst the very earliest notices of Kant in England – appeared there.

In 1848 he was part of the ministerial working group in Sardinia. He was in favour of the abolition of feudalism in Sardinia. He wrote many works on historical-political topics, particularly about Sardinia, and there is extensive literary coverage of him. Tola was also an encyclopedian, and authored a Dictionary of Sardinian Biography in 1837-38.

The Maison d'Ailleurs originates from the work of the French encyclopedian Pierre Versins, who dedicated his life to writing and the study of what he named "rational romanesque conjectures" ("conjectures romanesques rationnelles" in French). For more than twenty years, he gathered a very important collection of science fiction works. Based on this corpus, he wrote one of the major books in this domain, the Encyclopédie de l'utopie, des voyages extraordinaires et de la science-fiction. In 1976, he donated his assets to the city of Yverdon-les-Bains and the Maison d'Ailleurs was created.

Before the fire, the privately run theater, with a capacity of about 1700 visitors, suffered from financial problems. Officially, 384 people perished in the fire, though there are higher estimates. For example, the Prussian-born author and encyclopedian Ludwig Julius Eisenberg (1858–1910) claims that up to one thousand could have been killed.
