And that creates a problem: the nearly constant din tends to desensitize hospital staff to the sounds, a phenomenon dubbed "alarm fatigue," which can result in real emergencies being missed, researchers warn in The American Journal of Emergency Medicine.
|
|
Because their cells are turning over at such a rapid rate, nutrients and toxins have more of an impact on their development, said Erin McDowell, a pediatric emergency medicine physician at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio.
|
|
"But we were not prepared for the dramatic increase," said the senior author of the study, Dr. Genie E. Roosevelt, an associate professor of emergency medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and Denver Health Medical Center.

"If I were to have one of these injuries, I'd be out of commission for a while," said Trivedi, an emergency medicine physician at the University of California, Los Angeles and a fellow with the National Clinician Scholars Program.

"Our younger generation is less afraid to come out and say we want universal healthcare," says Anna Yap, 26, an emergency medicine resident at UCLA, who served as a medical student delegate to the AMA until this past June.

"We have repeatedly and consciously turned our back on the problem," said Garen Wintemute, a professor of emergency medicine who in July started the Firearm Violence Research Center at the University of California, Davis, with funding from the state.

Dr. Charles R. Wira III, a professor of emergency medicine at Yale, said that when he talked to residents about T.P.A., they often start citing blogs and podcasts "as the divine word for why T.P.A. is harmful," he said.

It also affects health care workers — particularly medical residents who may be on call for a 26-hour shift several times a week — or nurses and emergency medicine doctors who work irregular hours that often disrupt their circadian rhythms.
|
|
"Our population in the asylum camps are incredibly vulnerable," says Andrea Lanier, a nurse practitioner working in emergency medicine and Director of Strategic Planning for Global Response Management, the nonprofit that operates the only health clinic in the camp.

Emergency medicine physician Dr. Darria Long Gillespie admits she was "that woman" on a recent flight from Atlanta to Colorado — the one who meticulously wiped down her family's arm rests, trays (front and back), and seatbelts with Clorox wipes.

Instead of insisting that they be given opioids, more patients are coming to St. Joe's particularly because they know that they or their children won't reflexively be treated with those drugs, said Dr. Mark Rosenberg, chairman of emergency medicine.

"When doctors serve in sporting events as medical directors and team physicians, they must be prepared to cool onsite," said Dr. Jolie Holschen, associate professor in the department of emergency medicine at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine.

"Maybe it would be beneficial (for clinicians) to ask patients whether or not they feel like they have problems paying for their medications," said Cody Gibson, a researcher at UAB School of Medicine in Alabama who has studied other emergency medicine issues but was not involved in the current survey.
