Arsenio was one of two late- night shows to premiere in January 1989; the other was The Pat Sajak Show on CBS, hosted by longtime Wheel of Fortune host Pat Sajak. Unlike Sajak, Hall benefited from prior experience hosting a late-night program, especially when compared with Sajak's lack of emceeing experience outside of his Wheel duties.

Determined to revive interest surrounding the awards and reverse declining ratings, the Academy hired Samuel Goldwyn Jr. in November 1986 to produce the telecast for the first time. The following March, Goldwyn announced that comedian Chevy Chase, actress and Academy Award winner Goldie Hawn, and actor and Best Original Screenplay nominee Paul Hogan would share co-hosting duties for the 1987 ceremony. Actor Robin Williams was initially named a co-host, but he was forced to withdraw from emceeing duties due to his commitment toward his role in the upcoming film Good Morning, Vietnam. One of the biggest priorities for Goldwyn was to shorten the length of the show to at least three hours or less.
Roddy later adopted a rigorous diet and exercise program. Overweight for much of his adult life, the program resulted in Roddy's loss of close to 200 pounds. With his weight-loss regimen becoming a much-lauded success (frequently being mentioned by Bob Barker), he was frequently shown on-camera while he announced "the next contestant on The Price Is Right", and was occasionally featured in Showcase skits aiding the "Barker's Beauties", similar to Olson's frequent on-camera appearances. Roddy was also noted for wearing brightly colored and sequined sport jackets, a practice he first adopted as a trademark when making personal appearances emceeing teen dances and concerts for WKBW in Buffalo in the 1960s.

Working alongside such St. Louis radio icons as Chuck Nasty, Jimmy Paige, and Gentleman Jim Gates, Todd's ambition got the best of him and he entered the radio station in the middle of the night and began talking on the microphone. The origins of Soul Train can be traced to 1965 when WCIU-TV, an upstart UHF station in Chicago, began airing two youth-oriented dance programs: Kiddie-a-Go-Go and Red Hot and Blues. These programs—specifically the latter, which featured a predominantly African Americans group of in-studio dancers—would set the stage for what was to come to the station several years later. Don Cornelius, a news reader and backup disc jockey at Chicago radio station WVON, was hired by WCIU in 1967 as a news and sports reporter. Cornelius also was promoting and emceeing a touring series of concerts featuring local talent (sometimes called "record hops") at Chicago-area high schools, calling his traveling caravan of shows "The Soul Train".

Soon after the meeting, Braithwaite and Ahearn attended an event in a north Bronx neighbourhood called the Valley, where Busy Bee Starski, who went on to appear in several of Ahearn's productions, was performing on stage as an emcee.
In the wake of the Brexit referendum, Hughes wrote to his local Labour Party MP, Stephen Twigg, threatening to stand against him in an upcoming election if he voted with the Conservative Party to activate Article 50 without any protection for EU citizens living in the UK or British citizens living in the EU (against the wishes of a majority of his constituents). When Theresa May called a snap election in April 2017, Hughes, true to his word, returned to the UK to run against Twigg as an independent candidate. He received 0.7% of the votes. Since then, Hughes has been a vocal advocate of remaining in the European Union, leading and emceeing the "People's March For Europe" in September 2017.
Hellyer's break into a major market was in May 1950, when his daily postcards mailed to WCFL-AM Chicago's program director asking to "rescue" him from Milwaukee resulted in an unorthodox on- air live audition for 50,000 watt WCFL while broadcasting his show on air on WMIL-AM in Milwaukee. WCFL hired Hellyer, and by 1952 Hellyer was given the drive-time 6am – 10am radio slot where he was promoted as the "Morning Madcap." During this time Hellyer also freelanced with radio shows broadcasting on as many as seven different radio stations the same week, emceeing celebrity events, and generally advancing his career with radio and television commercial work as the regular voice of national sponsors. This included announcing live in-studio commercials on the CBS network show "What's My Line" in New York.

While emceeing a high school talent show, he dealt with a heckler, and won over the rest of the audience. During this period he became so associated with his craft that he and one of his dummies "cowrote" a column in the school paper, and he would pose with his dummies for yearbooks as an inexpensive way to acquire professional photos of his act for promotional purposes. He was voted Most Likely to Succeed, and in 1980, after he graduated from high school, Dunham gave himself a career goal of obtaining, within ten years, an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, which was seen as the "holy grail" for comedians. That year Dunham began attending Baylor University, hoping to graduate with a degree in communications, while performing around campus.
A portion of funds raised at performances are donated to organizations "that promote gay, lesbian and transgender diversity as well as AIDS awareness" with a primary recipient being Park House, an HIV day-clinic. While the men wear costumes styled after typical female cheerleader outfits (including miniskirt and pom-pons), they are not female impersonators or drag queens. They make no effort to hide the fact that they are male (several wear goatees or other facial hair). In addition to campy dance and musical performances referencing gay icons at events from Milwaukee's Pridefest to the Twin Cities Pride Parade the troupe also hosts community events including emceeing trans and genderqueer events, headlining the National Coming Out Week Annual Gender-Bender Drag Show at Minnesota State University and the Minnesota Red Ribbon Ride AIDS fundraiser.

The recording that had the most impact on the IGL Recording Co. was Dee Jay and the Runaways recording of Myron Lee and the Caddies 1961 song "Peter Rabbit". It also led to the group being the only one from Iowa during the 1960s to appear nationally on Dick Clark's Where the Action Is. The group had become familiar with that recording while performing at the PlaMor Ballroom in Fort Dodge, IA. A local dee-jay, Peter McClain, played the song when he was emceeing dances at the ballroom. Denny Storey (October 31, 1943 – September 13, 2018) and John Senn (September 29, 1940 – July 18, 2019), both members of the Runaways, had talked about doing their own version of the song. On one occasion while setting up for a dance at the PlaMor, Storey grabbed his guitar and showed Senn an approach to the song he thought would work well.
"Laura Osnes and Corey Cott Will Return to Broadway in 'Bandstand' Musical", Playbill, October 20, 2016 The production closed on Broadway on September 17, 2017, after 24 previews and 166 regular performances. She also performs in this show on the road consistently with fellow Broadway actresses Susan Egan (Beauty and the Beast, Hercules) and Courtney Reed (Aladdin).
The lyrics describe romantic longing and unrequited love: "I can't get your love, can't get a fraction / Uh-oh little girl, psychotic reaction." According to an interview with Byrne, the rave-up solo section of the song was influenced by the Yardbirds' frenzied 1965 treatment of Bo Diddley's R&B; classic "I'm A Man", while the rest of the song was contributed by the band. When Count Five, managed by singer Kenn Ellner's dad, Sol Ellner, a successful South Bay insurance salesman, played the song live a few weeks later at a dance at the old West Valley College in Campbell, local KLIV radio disc jockey Brian Lord, emceeing the show, was very impressed. After a few pointed suggestions on rearranging the tune for even more punch, Lord soon put the band in touch with a couple of friends in Los Angeles, Hal Winn and Joe Hooven, about to start their own record label, Double Shot Records.

Jennings commends Nerz for presenting a broader cast of characters who participate in the sport, even though Nerz's book covers a narrower view of the sport than Fagone's Horsemen of the Esophagus. Nerz was able to provide increased coverage of the competitors as a result of emceeing many contests, and therefore obtaining direct access to many competitors that Fagone did not have. The book's breadth of coverage, both in terms of contests arranged neatly by chapter and in terms of the number of competitors, was also noted positively in other reviews. The Publishers Weekly review of the book said that “Nerz chronicles his amusing adventures in the perverse, repellent, strangely heroic world of competitive eating…with glee and good humor.” The New York Times Book Review compared the author’s style to that of Grantland Rice, an early 20th-century American sportswriter known for his elegant prose. Calling the author “more mythifier than journalist,” the Times Book Review added that the competitive eaters he profiled “are indeed a colorful, varied bunch, even without the pro-wrestling-style personalities the IFOCE encourages.” Nerz appeared on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart on April 18, 2006, to discuss the book.
