Sigurdur Thordarson (born 1992), commonly known as Siggi hakkari ("Siggi the Hacker"), is an Icelander known for various information leaks, frauds and embezzlements, and for his involvement with the whistleblowing organization WikiLeaks. In 2010, at the age of 17, he was arrested for stealing and leaking classified information about Icelandic financial companies. After his arrest he was introduced to Julian Assange, the editor and founder of WikiLeaks, and worked as a volunteer for the organization for almost a year and a half. In 2011, Sigurdur became an informant for the FBI and turned over internal WikiLeaks documents.

In January 1981, the banking community was shocked to learn that a routine audit by the Assistant Operations Officer of the Wells Fargo Miracle Mile branch, Judith Allyn MacLardie, had revealed a $21.3 million embezzlement scheme. Lloyd Benjamin "Ben" Lewis had perpetrated the largest US electronic bank fraud on record and one of the largest embezzlements in history, through its Beverly Drive branch, where he worked as an Operations Officer. Barnardiston took little in parliament as a speaker, but his financial ability was recognised. In 1690 he was nominated a member of the commission appointed to audit and control the public accounts, which discovered many frauds and embezzlements, and first effectively supervised the expenditure of the public money. In 1691 a quarrel with Sir Josiah Child, governor of the East India Company, caused him to retire from the management, and afterwards to withdraw the money he had invested in its stocks. At the 1710 British general election he was again returned as MP for Poole. With the change of administration in Parliament, the ‘worthy patriots’ of the Tory Party investigated the mismanagements of the previous ministry and uncovered irregularities in the activities of brewers supplying the navy, including Ridge, and found frauds amounting to £55,435. The committee presented its report to the House which passed a resolution that Ridge was guilty of ‘notorious embezzlements and scandalous abuses’ and he was accordingly expelled from the House of Commons on 15 February 1711.

When he discovered that Karl von Miltitz had accused him of perpetrating numerous frauds and embezzlements, he withdrew, broken in spirit, wrecked in health, into the Dominican monastery in Leipzig.

In the United States, embezzlement is a statutory offence that, depending on the circumstances, may be a crime under state law, federal law, or both; therefore, the definition of the crime of embezzlement varies according to the given statute.
