In 1961, monks from the Abbey of En-Calcat, France, sent a number of monks to make a foundation in Togo. The nascent community settled in what was then part of the Archdiocese of Lomé, in a village known as Danyi-Dzogbégan, located on an elevated plain some 170 km from the coast of Togo. The Villa Merian, with its English Garden, stands upon the elevated plain directly above the watermill and the canal. The Baroque manor house was built in 1711 by Alexander Löffler. In 1801 the manor was rebuilt in early Classicism style and approximately ten years later the manor and its properties were acquired by Christoph Merian-Hoffmann who gave the estate to his son Christoph Merian as wedding present. Standing in Unteren Brüglingen, the lower district, is a mill from the 15th century. On the opposite side of the canal there is a tenantry house from the 16th century and a gardeners house dated 1824. In 1837 the architect Melchior Berri developed another farm house north of the manor house with an outbuilding with stables, in Vorder- Brüglingen, the "front" district of Brügglingen on the elevated plain. This raised plateau offers an ideal terrain for an English garden.

The Twelfth Soviet Antarctic Expedition was an expedition by the Soviet Union to Antarctica. During this expedition, a new method was used for measuring the thickness of the ice cap of Antarctica using radar. Glaciologists on the team surveyed the area around Mirny Station and measured the thickness of the glacier. The investigations discovered that the central part of the glacial cap in Eastern Antarctica is the largest and most ideal elevated plain in the world.

Ratibořice Château is a chateau north of Česká Skalice and about west of Náchod, in the Hradec Králové region, Czech Republic. It stands on an elevated plain below which valley in the bend of the Úpa river widens. Together with Babiččino údolí (Grandmother's valley), situated between Česká Skalice and Havlovice, it offers the Baroque architecture and Bohemian landscape, ranking among the best-known and most-frequented places in East Bohemia.
