This episode may have indulged in a lot of Star Wars nostalgia from use of the Mos Eisley cantina to the pit droids from the pod race in The Phantom Menace, to even the way bounty-hunter-wannabe Toro's whining had a young Luke Skywalker tinge to it.

The Rise of Skywalker is an allegory for the dystopian nightmare we are quickly hurtling toward, one in which we don't own our droids (or any of our other stuff), their utility hampered by arbitrary decisions and software locks by monopolistic corporations who don't want us to repair our things.

"Rise of Skywalker" concludes a story that began 42 years ago, in 1977, when filmmaker George Lucas introduced a young hero named Luke Skywalker and delighted audiences with a galaxy of metallic robots called droids, a race of tall, furry warriors known as Wookiees and a host of other eclectic characters.

|
The whole idea is to let fans re-enact or create new scenes using the toys and then overlay special effects such as X-wing laser fire strikes or ion cannon blasts or appearances by your favorite droids R39.993-D2 and BB-8 on top of their footage to bring them to life.
|
|
But as you can see in the official video, it makes up for relative slowness with incredible cuteness: With apologies to older fans, this 62-inch vehicle carries a maximum weight of 130 lbs — barely enough room for a li'l Luke and li'l Obi-Wan, let alone the droids you're not looking for.

While it relies on the series' canon for its plot line—a group of rebels band together in order to steal the plans to the Death Star—it also successfully establishes a new cast of memorable characters (droids included) who have opened up a world of possibilities for new narratives and adventures.

As I played my way through Space Pirates, fighting wave after wave of angry droids with a blaster and shield, I was continually surprised and delighted by the way in which my body mattered, by having to unlearn the sedentary approach to gaming which has been my reality for the last few decades.

|
Another design question: I get why the spaceships in Star Wars always have these gritty exteriors full of clunky panels and dangling widgets poking out everywhere—no need for sleek exterior panels in the vacuum of space, so might as well have everything open for droids—but how does that nonsense carry down onto planets themselves?
|
|
In "Star Wars," the history of the droids is that they have personalities built in, so that wasn't the journey of the role... This is a droid who's been in the world, who has a lot of knowledge and can access it, and people react to him as a person, really, just one who has special abilities because he's also a machine.

But these sorts of incidents were few and far between, and the truth is, the problem is, that we, those of us inside the cities, because we'd grown up with droids as part of our home, because we sat with them and ate with them and played ball and hung out, because they were part of the city, like everybody else, we lacked the imagination to foresee "Humans First" spray-painted on smashed-in storefronts in Washington and Chicago and New York.
