Nagar (Urdu: نگر), also known as Oyum Nagar in Burushaski and Nagar Khas in Urdu, is one of the largest towns in the Nagar District in Gilgit–Baltistan, Pakistan. Situated on the bank of the Nagar river, it is the former capital of the princely state of Nagar. Today, the famous Karakoram Highway crosses Nagar, connecting Pakistan to China via the Khunjerab Pass. The road follows the Hunza-Nagar River for some distance through Nagar and into the Hunza region.

In the U.S. state of Iowa, Interstate 29 (I-29) is a north–south Interstate Highway which closely parallels the Missouri River. I-29 enters Iowa from Missouri near Hamburg and heads to the north-northwest through the Omaha- Council Bluffs and the Sioux City areas. It exits the state by crossing the Big Sioux River into South Dakota. For its entire distance through the state, it runs on the flat land between the Missouri River and the Loess Hills.

It is named Main Street when it enters the county and intersects NY 77 in Pembroke. Formed by the confluence of the Fury River and Mackintosh Creek, the Mackintosh River rises below Mount Remus, part of the northern section of the West Coast Range. The river flows a short distance, through what is now known as Lake Mackintosh, joined by four tributaries including the Sophia River and Southwell River, emptying into the Pieman River. The Mackintosh River is impounded by the Mackintosh Dam, the site of the adjacent hydroelectric power station that forms part of the Hydro Tasmania-operated Pieman River Power Development. If the motorcycle is leaned over, forces from the front brake and the deceleration causes the motorcycle to yaw (lean), while use of the rear brake generates a torque that tends to align (straighten) and stabilize the motorcycle. The Defensible Barracks is a fortified barracks located at Europa Flats in the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar. The British defensive strategy in Gibraltar predominantly focused on keeping enemies at a distance through the use of artillery. There were few inner lines of defence to address the risk of an enemy getting through the outer line. However, the southern tip of Gibraltar, Europa Point, was long felt to be potentially vulnerable to a surprise attack from the sea and was heavily fortified with gun batteries, perimeter walls and scarped cliffs.

Evidence suggests that gametophytic selection may influence the fitness of seedlings in the next sporophytic generation. Studies on specific species have observed improvement of offspring quality suggesting that the rate of pollen- tube growth in the style is positively correlated with the rate of seedling growth in the next generation. The next steam-hauled passenger train at the station was not until 4 May 2002 when BR Standard Class 4 2-6-0 No. 76079 headed 'The Easterling' from Liverpool Street via Norwich. View west along SR 69 at I-77 in Poplar Camp SR 69 begins at an intersection with SR 636 (Store Hill Road) just south of the village of Austinville on the New River. The state highway heads east parallel to Poplar Camp Mountain and the Wythe-Carroll county line, which the highway travels atop for a short distance through the hamlet of Bethany. SR 69 expands to a four-lane divided highway through its diamond interchange with Interstate 77 before reaching its eastern terminus at US 52 (Fort Chiswell Road) in Poplar Camp.

NY 106 remains a four-lane divided boulevard, passing north for a short distance through Muttontown and passing east of the Muttontown Preserve. Changing monikers to Jericho-Oyster Bay Road, NY 106 continues north before making a gradual bend along the preserve to the northwest, re-entering Oyster Bay. After crossing back into Oyster Bay, the route becomes residential going southbound before intersecting with NY 25A (Northern Boulevard). NY 11B entering the town of Stockholm NY 11B begins at an intersection with US 11 (Lawrence Street) in the village of Potsdam just north of the junction with NY 56\. NY 11B proceeds eastward on Elm Street past a local church and the Clarkson University ROTC as a two-lane residential village street. After passing a distance north of SUNY Potsdam, NY 11B leaves the village for the town of Potsdam, maintaining its Elm Street moniker until Hatch Road and Potsdam Municipal/Damon Field, a local airport. For a distance through Potsdam, NY 11B remains residential, crossing into the town of Stockholm.

I-40 Bus./US 180 concurrency in Flagstaff, Arizona In Flagstaff, US 180 is concurrent with Interstate 40 Business and historic U.S. Route 66 for a short distance through the city. The airport's railway station Express Connections to Berlin City Berlin Schönefeld Airport is served by Berlin-Schönefeld Flughafen railway station, a short walking distance through a ground-level covered walkway from the airport terminals K-Q. Berlin Central Station (Berlin Hbf) is served directly by regional trains (RE Regional- Express or RB Regional-Bahn). State Route 312 (SR 312) is a north-south state highway located in the southern portion of the U.S. state of Ohio. SR 312 runs from its southern terminus at a T-intersection with SR 93 approximately northeast of Logan to its northern terminus at a T-intersection with SR 664 nearly south of Bremen. SR 312 was created in the early 1930s. Its generally maintained its same routing for the entirety of its history, excepting the first five years of its existence when it continued north along SR 664 a short distance through Bremen before coming to an end at SR 37\.

Remaining a two-lane commercial street, NY 66 continues west along Main Avenue along the Wyants Kill before leaving North Greenbush for the city of Troy. Upon entering Troy, NY 66 crosses the southern terminus of CR 142 (Mountain View Avenue). Passing through the Albia section of Troy, the route runs northwest along Pawling Avenue, remaining a two-lane residential street for a distance through Troy. At the junction with Pinewoods Avenue and passing south of Ida Lake, NY 66 turns north past Mount Ida Cemetery and crosses the Poesten Kill before reaching a junction with NY 2 (Congress Street).

The NBCRV detects and collects chemical and biological contamination in its local environment on the move through point detection (Chemical Biological Mass Spectrometer (CBMS) and Joint Biological Point Detection System (JBPDS)), and at a distance through the use of a standoff detector (JSLSCAD) . It automatically integrates contamination information from detectors with input from on-board navigation and meteorological systems and automatically transmits digital NBC warning messages through the Mission Command System. As of 2010, the U.S. Army does not plan to field Stryker Double V-Hull (DVH) versions of the NBCRV in Afghanistan.

In the Interstate Highway era much of US 21 became an obvious corridor for a long-distance expressway. The West Virginia Turnpike between Charleston, West Virginia, and Princeton, West Virginia, was the first segment of a planned series of toll highways along or near US 21 from Cleveland to Charlotte, North Carolina. All of the other toll highways were shelved in favor of freeways built with Interstate funding; these freeways and the West Virginia Turnpike became I-77, which completely supplanted old US 21 as a long-distance through route. I-77 was later extended to Columbia, South Carolina, also within a few miles of US 21\.

The Uwharrie River rises in northwestern Randolph County, just south of the city of High Point, and flows generally southwardly into northwestern Montgomery County, through the low Uwharrie Mountains and the Uwharrie National Forest. It flows into the Pee Dee River 8 mi (13 km) east of the city of Albemarle as part of the Lake Tillery reservoir, across the Pee Dee from Morrow Mountain State Park. Above the mouth of the Uwharrie, the Pee Dee is known as the Yadkin River. In its upper course, the Uwharrie collects a minor tributary named the Little Uwharrie River, which flows for a short distance through northwestern Randolph County.

Beech wood in Emo Court The approach to Emo Court is through a gateway, and along a driveway which runs for some distance through a beech wood before opening up to an avenue lined by giant sequoias. These large trees were first introduced in 1853 and named Wellingtonias in honour of Arthur Wellesley, first Duke of Wellington, who died the previous year. There is a visitor car park to the side of the house. To the left are coach houses and servants' quarters, to the right mature trees and in the centre the entrance front, dominated by a pediment supported by four Ionic pillars.

Looking eastbound on SR-55 in Price toward SR-10 The route through downtown Price had been designated SR-8 early in the state highway system's history; it would also become US-50 in 1926 and US-6 in 1937. The underlying state route designation was changed to SR-27 in 1969, but otherwise the routes did not change. However, by the 1970s, a new super-two bypass of the city center was being built for long- distance through traffic. As a result, the U.S. routes were moved onto this bypass, and the modern iteration of SR-55 was created in 1975 on the old routing of US 6/50.

Cooper was a member of the Harvard Square Script Writers, a group of writers who work-shopped their screenplays. It was while a member of this group that he came across a script by Michael and Shawn Rasmussen called Long Distance, which he rewrote. While Cooper was accepted into the Boston University Masters of Fine Arts program in film production, he chose to drop out and produce Long Distance through his company Lascaux Pictures, now known as Lascaux Media, instead of completing his MFA by producing a thesis film. The film, starring Monica Keena, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2005 and was sold for distribution in 30 countries.

Minnesota State Highway 33 (MN 33) is a highway in northeast Minnesota, which runs from its interchange with Interstate 35 at Cloquet and continues north to its northern terminus at its interchange with U.S. Highway 53 at Independence. The highway is constructed as a four-lane expressway with a speed limit, except for a short distance through the city of Cloquet, where the route is located on a four-lane city surface street. Highway 33 is a bypass of Duluth for travelers headed to the Iron Range of northern Minnesota and International Falls. The route connects Interstate 35 at Cloquet with U.S. 53 at Independence.

From Byarong Park, a picnic area with parking and an information bay, access to the Ring Track is via a short link track that runs from the northern perimeter of the picnic area to the entrance of the Girl Guide Camp road. The link track crosses the Guide Camp road and then ascends a short distance through rainforest, before joining the Ring Track. From the junction, two branches of the Ring Track ascend the mountain. The main road quickly became established, and Crawley was a natural stopping place almost exactly halfway between the coast and London. Its development into an urban area was assured when King John granted a charter for a market in 1202. St John the Baptist's Church was founded a few decades later, a manor house was built in the late 14th or early 15th century, and the local iron industry brought further prosperity. Buildings appeared on both sides of the High Street, which widened significantly as it passed the manor house and church, and the market's position on a long-distance through road enabled it to thrive.

The Nagold Valley Railway was already of reduced importance in long-distance transport after the Second World War. In 1995, the remaining long-distance through coaches were withdrawn and since then the line has been used exclusively for local traffic. Since the neighbouring Enz Valley Railway was at the same time increasingly threatened with closure, the Albtal-Verkehrs- Gesellschaft (AVG—Alb Valley Transport Company) took over that line early in 2000 and instituted a lightrail operation as part of the Karlsruhe Stadtbahn at the end of 2002. This resulted in some improvements on the Enz Valley portion of the Nagold Valley Railway, in addition to electrification.

To be named Kempt Road, the route not only served to connect the coast of the Saint Lawrence coast and Chaleur Bay, it was also to be used for military purposes. In 1824, under the command of Governor James Kempt, James Crawford picked up Joseph Bouchette's torch as explorer of the valley's interior and was tasked with finding a suitable path for the important road. In his report, submitted 4 May 1824, he indicates that even if the distance through Lake Matapedia from Métis was longer, it was easier. However, he goes on to note that the terrain east of Lake Matapedia would be more difficult, even along the river, due to the steepness of the river banks.

LIGO operates two gravitational wave observatories in unison: the LIGO Livingston Observatory () in Livingston, Louisiana, and the LIGO Hanford Observatory, on the DOE Hanford Site (), located near Richland, Washington. These sites are separated by 3,002 kilometers (1,865 miles) straight line distance through the earth, but 3,030 kilometers (1,883 miles) over the surface. Since gravitational waves are expected to travel at the speed of light, this distance corresponds to a difference in gravitational wave arrival times of up to ten milliseconds. Through the use of trilateration, the difference in arrival times helps to determine the source of the wave, especially when a third similar instrument like Virgo, located at an even greater distance in Europe, is added.

Bristol's post-war development plan of 1952 contained plans for an Outer Circuit Road forming a circuit of Bristol's inner suburbs. These were refined following an origin and destination study conducted in 1963 and published, together with plans for eight enhanced radial routes, in the Bristol City Centre Policy Report of 1966. The Outer Circuit Road was designed to take long-distance through traffic as well as local cross-city traffic, thus allowing the Inner Circuit Road to fulfil its intended function as a purely local distributor road.

The most reliable document confirming the existence of qanats at this time was written by Polybius who states that: "the streams are running down from everywhere at the base of Alborz mountain, and people have transferred too much water from a long distance through some subterranean canals by spending much cost and labor." During the Seleucid Era, which began after the occupation of Iran by Alexander, it seems that the qanats were abandoned. In terms of the situation of qanats during this era, some historical records have been found. In a study by Russian orientalist scholars it has been mentioned that: the Persians used the side branches of rivers, mountain springs, wells and qanats to supply water.

A well-padded individual with a sense of humor about himself, Salinger turned his efforts to avoid the march into an open joke, finally releasing a statement on February 12, 1963, in which he publicly declined the honor. In May 1940, shortly after the German occupation of Belgium, Hanotte and her father assisted two officers who had become separated during the retreat of the British Expeditionary Force to Dunkirk. Along its route it passes by the towns or localities of Bindi, Tongio, Swifts Creek, Ensay, Tambo Crossing, Bruthen, Tambo Upper, Swan Reach, and Johnsonville. The river leaves the mountains and the Mount Tambo Scenic Reserve forming its headwaters near the locality of Bindi, north of Swifts Creek, and from Bindi flows through the Tambo Valley to Bruthen. The Great Alpine Road picks up the route of the river at Tongio and follows the river for much of the distance through the Tambo Valley south of this point. The Action of 22 October 1793 was a minor naval engagement fought in the Mediterranean Sea during the War of the First Coalition, early in the French Revolutionary Wars. During the engagement a lone British Royal Navy ship of the line, the 64-gun HMS Agamemnon, attacked the French Navy large frigate Melpomène, part of a larger squadron, off the coast of Sardinia. Although Agamemnon chased Melpomène some distance through the night and inflicted significant damage, the French frigate was able to escape following the arrival of the rest of its squadron under Commodore Jean-Baptiste Perrée. The French ships later anchored in Corsican harbours to land reinforcements for the French garrison on the island, where the population was in open revolt.

Outside of Sodus, Ridge Road becomes CR 143 and parallels the Ontario Midland Railroad for just under before crossing the railroad at an oblique angle and intersecting NY 104. By crossing NY 104 here, Ridge Road moves to the north side of NY 104 for the first time since the start of East Ridge Road in Rochester and only the second time since the beginning of the road in Lewiston. Ridge Road runs parallel to NY 104 for a considerable distance through sparsely populated areas of the town of Sodus to the hamlet of Alton, where Ridge Road intersects NY 14 in its center. The state highway, which enters Alton from the north as part of the Seaway Trail, travels east for along Ridge Road before resuming its trek southward toward North Rose.

These tubes probably were the magma feeding tubes for volcanic flow that would have once overlain the existing rock, but have since been eroded. Florenceville-Bristol are also extensively terraced with sands and gravels from both the workings of the Saint John River and its tributaries and also from the existence of a huge post-glacial lake that existed in the area for some time after the last Ice Age. In the areas that the bedrock is not covered by this aggregate material, the bedrock is covered by a thin veneer of glacial till. There is also an extensive fault trending through Florenceville-Bristol from NE to SW which the Saint John River follows for a short distance through the town, causing its seemingly odd bend in flow in the local area.

Long distance through coaches to Scotland and London Euston (via Manchester Victoria, and ) also operated from here well into British Rail days. The biggest losses came though in the 1960s - Wigan trains were withdrawn in January 1960, those to Hellifield in September 1962 and the Southport line & Blackpool Central station both fell victim to the Beeching Axe in 1964.

The completion of the M4 and M5 motorways meant that by the mid-1970s most long-distance through traffic bypassed Bristol, and from 1986 the Avon Ring Road diverted further traffic away from the central area. Plans were developed to reduce through traffic on Redcliffe Way, diverting traffic via Perry Road and Jacobs Wells Road to the north, and Coronation Rd to the south, effectively turning the Inner Circuit route into an elongated loop with Cumberland Basin at its western extremity. The dual carriageway across Queen Square was closed, at first experimentally, in 1992; Redcliffe Flyover was demolished in 1998 to be replaced with the Temple Circus Gyratory, which in turn was further simplified in 2017. The road across Quay Head was removed during the 1998 remodelling of The Centre, effectively decommissioning the whole western half of the Inner Circuit Road.

Serving a thinly populated and remote area, the line was never commercially successful, and the long-distance through routes passing through did not succeed in bringing great traffic volumes to the line. When Llanidloes station was to be extended and improved, the Manchester and Milford Railway, then under construction, undertook to pay a one-third share of the cost of the works, and of future maintenance and operation of the station. The M&MR; later decided to alter the course of its line and never reached Llanidloes, but continued to be liable for heavy charges for a station it did not connect with. Major route closures took place in the region in the 1960s, but a portion of the L&NR;, from Newtown to Moat Lane, continues in use, carrying passenger trains on the Aberystwyth line.

In "Survivor Man", it is revealed that Dwight still has numerous knives (and other weapons) hidden on himself (as in "Stress Relief", there is a knife strapped to his leg) or strategically positioned throughout the office (such as "Mr. A Knife" in a filing cabinet, twin sais behind a water cooler, a sword in a ceiling tile, a blow dart in a bathroom stall, and a compound bow under a couch), and that he owns a .22 rifle with scope. Also, in this episode, it is shown that Dwight has extensive knowledge of how to survive in the wilderness, being able to provide himself with food, and, by observing Michael, from a distance, through the scope of his center-fire rifle, he stops Michael from poisoning himself, although it is not clear whether the mushrooms Michael started to ingest were actually poisonous.

The composition, with a group of trees in the centre, and openings on either side through which the light appears, was often used by Flemish landscape painters from the time of Bruegel: Paul and Matthew Bril frequently employed it, and Lorrain continued in their tradition in Rome. In accordance with classic 16th century procedure, the bridge harmoniously unites the middle and far distance. Through the opening on the right can be seen a city bathed in a golden mist, more characteristic of the campagna romana (Roman countryside) than of the North. Following the usual practice of studios of the Low Countries, Lorrain often employed other artists to paint the little figures in his pictures; but this does not seem to have been the case here, to judge by the unity of conception between figures and landscape.

Beadnell believes that qanat construction dates back to two distinct periods: they were first constructed by the Persianse, and later the Romans dug some other qanats during their reign in Egypt from 30 BC to 395 AD. The magnificent temple built in this area during Darius's reign shows that there was a considerable population depending on the water of qanats. Ragerz has estimated this population to be 10,000 people. The most reliable document confirming the existence of qanats at this time was written by Polybius who states that: “the streams are running down from everywhere at the base of Alborz mountain, and people have transferred too much water from a long distance through some subterranean canals by spending much cost and labor”. During the Seleucid Era, which began after the occupation of Iran by Alexander, it seems that the qanats were abandoned.

As DR-1 enters the city of Santiago de los Caballeros, it abruptly ends meters in front of the Monument to the Heroes of Restoration. Before, a highway gap between Autopista Juan Pablo Duarte and Joaquín Balaguer of about 5 kilometers in distance through the city of Santiago had existed and the only alternative to this problem was exiting on Salvador Estrella Sadhala avenue and continuing northwest in the avenue until reaching a junction with the continuation of DR-1 from this point onward renamed as Joaquin Balaguer. The government has fixed this issue in 2014 with the construction of the Circunvalacion Norte avenue and has been completed. The Circunvalacion Norte deviates traffic by going around the north side of Santiago with exits to Licey/Moca, Gurabo and exits to the northern part of Santiago until it merges with Joaquin Balaguer near Navarette.

" Despite the fictional nature of the work, the account of Sudanese village life depicted therein is considered accurate enough to be an anthropological record. For example, Sondra Hale writes that by reading the novella, "one can learn as much about Sudanese village life as from most ethnographic studies." Wail Hassan differs from Hale, in that he does not make the argument that the village as depicted functions as an academic source for understanding real Sudanese village life. However, he does note that the narrator seems to view the village at a distance, through an ethnographic lens: "the quasi- anthropological gaze of the third-person narrator, who is clearly an outsider, serves to undercut the villagers' worldview...The narrator reports the beliefs of the villagers, neither vouching for nor discrediting those beliefs, but insisting nevertheless on their peculiarity.

The film Lili inspired an interest in puppets in the seven-year-old Waters, who proceeded to stage violent versions of Punch and Judy for children's birthday parties. Biographer Robrt L. Pela says that Waters' mother believes the puppets in Lili had the greatest influence on Waters' subsequent career (though Pela believes tacky films at a local drive- in, which the young Waters watched from a distance through binoculars, had a greater effect). Cry-Baby was also a product of Waters' boyhood, because of his fascination as a 7-year-old with the "drapes" then receiving intense news coverage because of the murder of a young "drapette", coupled with his awed admiration for a young man who lived across the street and who possessed a hot rod. Waters was privately educated at the Calvert School in Baltimore.

NY 369 in North Fenton from NY 79 NY 369 begins in the Fenton, Broome County hamlet of Port Crane as a northward continuation of NY 7B, which becomes NY 369 upon rounding a curve (the remnants of an intersection between then-NY 7 and NY 369) just southwest of the community. The route heads north into Port Crane, where it intersects half of Interstate 88/NY 7 exit 3 (the ramps leading to and from the eastbound carriageway) at Albany Street. Farther north, access to and from I-88 and NY 7 westbound is made at an intersection just past the overpass carrying I-88 and NY 7 over NY 369\. North of Port Crane, NY 369 follows the eastern bank of the Chenango River for a short distance through rural Fenton before splitting from the waterway south of Chenango Valley State Park, which NY 369 passes to the east.

The British would end the offensive north of the Ancre and concentrate on the area between Montauban and Fricourt and then attack the German second position between Loguelval and Bazentin le Petit. Joffre gave Foch responsibility for co-ordinating the French effort with the British. Foch arranged for the French Sixth Army to continue the offensive on the south bank and to bring two more corps into the XX Corps area on the north bank to advance to the Péronne–Bapaume road to outflank the German defences along the river, dismounted cavalry linking the attacks on either side of the river. That night the Fourth Army staff ordered that preparations be made for an attack on the German second position from Longueval to Bazentin le Petit, by advancing to attacking distance through Bernafay and Caterpillar woods, Mametz Wood, Contalmaison and north of La Boisselle.

Through Middleburgh, NY 145 remains a two-lane rural road, proceeding north into the village of Middleburgh. Passing south of Middleburgh Cemetery, the route intersects with the terminus of CR 21 (Huntersland Road) and CR 66 (Cotton Hill Road). Now in downtown Middleburgh, NY 145 proceeds northwest along Main Street, a two-lane commercial street, passing an intersection with the village continuation of CR 36 (Clauerville Road). Several blocks east of CR 36, NY 145 intersects with NY 30 (River Street). NY 30 and NY 145 become concurrent for the length of a bridge over Schoharie Creek. NY 145, after NY 30 forks to the southeast, proceeds northwest through the town of Middleburgh alongside Schoharie Creek. Bending northward, NY 145 bends away from Schoharie Creek, passing through numerous farms that separate the road from the creek. After intersecting with CR 57 (Sunnyside Road), NY 145 winds northwestward for a distance through Middleburgh, intersecting with CR 41 (Ecker Hollow Road).

Since the 1980s, the Indian and Bangladeshi governments have sought to negotiate an agreement permitting commercial vehicles to pass through Bangladeshi highways to reach the northeastern states of India from the west; a concept described in India as the "Bangla Corridor." Such an arrangement is being promoted for its benefit to bilateral commerce, the transport cost reduction for Indian businesses and additional revenue for Bangladesh. In 2006, both governments began working on a proposal to provide a bus service directly connecting Kolkata with Agartala, the capital of the Indian state of Tripura, which borders eastern Bangladesh. As of 2007, travelling distance through Indian territory is an estimated , but a direct road link via Dhaka would shorten the travelling distance to an estimated , considerably reducing the costs of transport for Indian businesses, which have to transport goods and services through the narrow "Chicken's Neck" territory that is bordered by northern Bangladesh and southern Nepal.

While Newton was able to formulate his law of gravity in his monumental work, he was deeply uncomfortable with the notion of "action at a distance" that his equations implied. In 1692, in his third letter to Bentley, he wrote: "That one body may act upon another at a distance through a vacuum without the mediation of anything else, by and through which their action and force may be conveyed from one another, is to me so great an absurdity that, I believe, no man who has in philosophic matters a competent faculty of thinking could ever fall into it." He never, in his words, "assigned the cause of this power". In all other cases, he used the phenomenon of motion to explain the origin of various forces acting on bodies, but in the case of gravity, he was unable to experimentally identify the motion that produces the force of gravity (although he invented two mechanical hypotheses in 1675 and 1717).

The first of these is the Pulga Bridge, an arch bridge that crosses over a lower railroad truss bridge; soon after are the highway's three tunnels through rock formations in the canyon. After a fair distance through the canyon, and that formed by the East Branch North Fork Feather River, SR 70 reaches the junction with State Route 89 near Paxton; Routes 70 and 89 overlap southeast from that point, where the East Branch splits into Indian Creek and Spanish Creek. The highway heads southeast, partly along the latter creek, past Keddie to Quincy in the American Valley.

Polar regions receive less intense solar radiation than the other parts of Earth because the sun's energy arrives at an oblique angle, spreading over a larger area, and also travels a longer distance through the Earth's atmosphere in which it may be absorbed, scattered or reflected, which is the same thing that causes winters to be colder than the rest of the year in temperate areas. The axial tilt of the Earth has a major effect on climate of the polar regions. However, since the polar regions are the farthest from the equator, they receive the weakest solar radiation and are therefore generally frigid year round due to the earth's axial tilt of 23.5° not being enough to create a high maximum midday declination to sufficiently strengthen the sun's rays even in summer, except for relatively brief periods in peripheral areas near the polar circles. The large amount of ice and snow also reflects a large part of what weak sunlight the Polar regions receive, contributing to the cold.
