The Kipp affair represents, in miniature, some of the ways that the American intervention in the Republic of Vietnam shaped South Vietnamese ideas about their cultural identity and political community. Overall, from 1965 to 1969, many articles published in the inner pages of Chính luận show that Vietnamese responded the impact of the American presence on Vietnamese society by categorizing Vietnamese and Americans as separate groups, by expressing an emotional sense of group membership, and by attempting to discursively reify Vietnameseness through definitions of collective identity.
