In 2016, the nuclease Cas13a (formerly known as C2c2) from the bacterium Leptotrichia shahii was characterized. Cas13 is an RNA-guided RNA endonuclease, which means that it does not cleave DNA, but only single-stranded RNA. Cas13 is guided by its crRNA to a ssRNA target and binds and cleaves the target. A distinctive feature of Cas13, as compared to Cas9, is that after cutting its target, Cas13 remains bound to the target and then cleaves other ssRNA molecules non- discriminately.

Figure 4: Methylation-specific PCR is a sensitive method to discriminately amplify and detect a methylated region of interest using methylated-specific primers on bisulfite-converted genomic DNA. Such primers will anneal only to sequences that are methylated, and thus containing 5-methylcytosines that are resistant to conversion by bisulfite. In alternative fashion, unmethylated-specific primers can be used. This alternative method of methylation analysis also uses bisulfite-treated DNA but avoids the need to sequence the area of interest.

The assessment of episodic-like memory must rely on these behavioural characteristics because animals do not have the language capabilities to participate in the episodic memory tests developed for humans. Evidence of an episodic-like memory system was first provided by Clayton & Dickinson (1998). They demonstrated that western scrub jays (Aphelocoma californica) remember where they cache different types of food, and discriminately recover them depending on the perishability of the item and the amount of time that has passed since caching. Recent research has further investigated episodic-like memory in these birds, but has also explored evidence of this memory system in other species such as the rufous hummingbird, pigeons, primates, rats and honeybees.

Deputy Federal Commissioner of Taxation (NSW) v W R Moran Pty Ltd (1939) 61 CLR 735 is a High Court of Australia case that deals with whether section 96 is limited by section 99, which prevents Commonwealth laws discriminating between States. In this case, the Commonwealth imposed a tax on flour millers, but reimbursed the States based on their production of wheat in order to reimburse the flour millers by 90% of their taxes. The problem is that Tasmania, while milling flour, does not produce wheat. The majority held that the taxation was valid since the tax applied equally to all States, and there was no constitutional impediment to granting money discriminately.

On Woewiyu's return from Liberia back to the United States in May 2014, he was arrested due to a criminal investigation that began in January of that year, by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement at the Newark Liberty International Airport on charges of lying on his immigration application for U.S. citizenship omitting his involvement in the NPFL and in other war crimes. This arrest coincides with the launch of his bid for senator in Liberia. While filing naturalization papers in 2006, 34 years after obtaining legal permanent resident status, Woewiyu failed to disclose his membership in the NPFL, and later NPFL-CRC, both of which were rebel factions during the First Liberian Civil War. He omitted his participation in advocating for a government overthrow, he denied persecuting people discriminately, and he failed to disclose a previous criminal conviction.
