Disconnection syndrome is a general term for a collection of neurological symptoms caused -- via lesions to associational or commissural nerve fibres -- by damage to the white matter axons of communication pathways in the cerebrum (not to be confused with the cerebellum), independent of any lesions to the cortex. Due to the numerous road disconnections that would take place as a result of the Welland Bypass, a new highway was proposed to link Welland with Port Colborne.

Due to a combination of factors, by the end of the 1970s, the Parliament-Funkadelic enterprise was starting to crumble. Dissatisfaction with George Clinton's poor financial management led to the departure of several key members, including Glenn Goins and Jerome Brailey. Haskins, Simon, and Thomas (who had performed with Clinton and bass vocalist Ray Davis as The Parliaments since the late 1950s) felt increasingly marginalized by the influx of new P-Funk musicians, and in 1977, they refused to sign a new management contract they believed would require them to relinquish all rights to the names Parliament and Funkadelic. Shortly thereafter, the three singers left Parliament-Funkadelic and formed their own band, which they named "Funkadelic", and recorded Connections & Disconnections.

Commodification necessitates a full recovery price and the removal of cross- subsidies to ensure free market trade. The formation of private public partnerships (PPP) is the standard model for transferring public goods to private goods with the aim to reconcile conflict between the public and private sector. They are promoted by global institutions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund as the best available way to manage water resources efficiently and are rapidly increasing in number providing evidence for the global trend of commodification.

Examining a diverse range of non-State-funded, explicitly 'alternative' education spaces in the UK (like Homeschooling, Waldorf education, Montessori education, Forest school (learning style) and Care farming), Peter Kraftl examines the connections and disconnections between 'mainstream' and 'alternative' education sectors. Drawing on nonrepresentational children's geographies, Peter Kraftl explores how alternative educators work to intervene into children's bodily habits, how they create spaces in which mess and disorder are valorised, and how they work with conceptions of 'nature' that both resonate with and, critically, counter mainstream assumptions about children's disengagement with 'nature' in Western societies (see Nature deficit disorder). Delay-tolerant networking (DTN) was designed to enable standardized communications over long distances and through time delays. At its core is something called the Bundle Protocol (BP), which is similar to the Internet Protocol, or IP, that serves as the heart of the Internet here on Earth. The big difference between the regular Internet Protocol (IP) and the Bundle Protocol is that IP assumes a seamless end-to-end data path, while BP is built to account for errors and disconnections — glitches that commonly plague deep-space communications. Bundle Service Layering, implemented as the Bundling protocol suite for delay-tolerant networking, will provide general- purpose delay-tolerant protocol services in support of a range of applications: custody transfer, segmentation and reassembly, end-to-end reliability, end-to-end security, and end-to-end routing among them.

One major psychological theory, relational-cultural theory, is based on the work of Jean Baker Miller, whose book Toward a New Psychology of Women proposes that "growth-fostering relationships are a central human necessity and that disconnections are the source of psychological problems". Inspired by Betty Friedan's Feminine Mystique, and other feminist classics from the 1960s, relational-cultural theory proposes that "isolation is one of the most damaging human experiences and is best treated by reconnecting with other people", and that a therapist should "foster an atmosphere of empathy and acceptance for the patient, even at the cost of the therapist's neutrality". In addition to these restrictions, unemployment benefits were expanded to those temporarily out of work due to COVID-19-related closures or due to self-quarantining, and evictions and utility disconnections were banned to help those affected by the spread of the virus. Financescape is one the five aspects of global cultural flows that renowned globalization theorist Arjun Appadurai proposed in his article Disjuncture and Difference in the Global Cultural Economy that he claims can be used to distinguish the various disjunctures or disconnections between economy, culture and politics, within the overall global economy. Appadurai poses that when considering the financescape framework, we must consider how global capital today moves in an increasingly fluid and non-isomorphic manner, thus contributing to an overall unpredictability of all the five aspects of global cultural flows as a whole. The four other aspects Appadurai mentions in his article are ethnoscapes, technoscapes, mediascapes and ideoscapes. Appadurai further states that despite disjunctures having always existed between the flows of people, machinery, money, ideas and images, the world is at a crossroads where this is happening to a larger extent; pointing to the importance of studying the "-scapes".

The novel is thus broken only into French scenes (or perhaps "French chapters").
