Rosemary Ferguson Dybwad (May 12, 1910 — November 3, 1992) was an American developmental disability advocate between the 1950s to 1990s. Dybwad had previously worked as a case worker and at correctional facilities before she joined the National Association for Retarded Children in 1957. With the National Association, Dybwad was the secretary of international correspondence for her husband, Gunnar Dybwad, between 1957 to 1963. From 1964 to 1967, Dybwad and her husband co-directed a project on intellectual disabilities for the International Union of Child Welfare.

Herman H. Spitz is an American psychologist known for his work measuring intelligence among those with developmental disability. He was Director of Research at the E.R. Johnstone Training and Research Center, which was a state institution for adolescents and young adults with upper-level intellectual disability in Bordentown, New Jersey, until he retired in 1989. He worked under the direction of the Superintendent John M. Wall, who retired in 1990 having served from August 1969. Spitz studied concepts such as mental age,Spitz HH (1982).
President John F. Kennedy signs the Community Mental Health Act. The United States has experienced two main waves of deinstitutionalisation. The first wave began in the 1950s and targeted people with mental illness. The second wave began roughly 15 years later and focused on individuals who had been diagnosed with a developmental disability. Loren Mosher argues that deinstitutionalisation fully began in the 1970s and was due to financial incentives like SSI and Social Security Disability, rather than after the earlier introduction of psychiatric drugs.

The Greater Athol Area Advocates for Families with Special Needs administers family support services for those who have a family member with a developmental disability. The Athol Council on Aging, in conjunction with Franklin County Home Care Corporation, provides hot meals, clinics, transportation, and recreational programs for the elderly. Three local housing complexes provide apartments specifically for senior citizens. Athol citizens supported at proposal to purchase a building in the Lord Pond Plaza recently and work to provide an Athol Senior Center hopefully will be completed within the next two years.
Malpuech facial clefting syndrome, also called Malpuech syndrome or Gypsy type facial clefting syndrome, is a rare congenital syndrome. It is characterized by facial clefting (any type of cleft in the bones and tissues of the face, including a cleft lip and palate), a caudal appendage (a "human tail"), growth deficiency, intellectual and developmental disability, and abnormalities of the renal system (kidneys) and the male genitalia. Abnormalities of the heart, and other skeletal malformations may also be present. The syndrome was initially described by Georges Malpuech and associates in 1983.

According to IDEA, an individual with autism is someone with "a developmental disability significantly affecting verbal and nonverbal communication and social interaction, generally evident before age three, that adversely affects a child's educational performance." IDEA states that an individual who fits these characteristics can receive special education services if a student is exhibiting signs of autism after their third birthday. Characteristics associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder, or ASD fall within three categories: social interaction, behavior, and communication. Warren is well known for his work in the field of Human Genetics. His research has been focused on the mechanistic understanding of fragile X syndrome, a leading cause of inherited developmental disability and autism. In 2020, Warren stepped down as department chair after 20 years in that position. Maximo and Bartola Maximo and Bartola at their staged "wedding" in 1867, an attempt to garner more publicity. Máximo and Bartola (also known as Maximo Valdez Nunez and Bartola Velasquez respectively) were the stage names of two Salvadoran siblings both suffering from microcephaly and cognitive developmental disability who were exhibited in human zoos in the 19th century. Originally from near Usulután, El Salvador, the siblings were given by their mother to a merchant who promised he would take them to Grenada to be educated and exhibited. They then went through several guardians afterwards.

Deinstitutionalisation (or deinstitutionalization) is the process of replacing long-stay psychiatric hospitals with less isolated community mental health services for those diagnosed with a mental disorder or developmental disability. In the late 20th century, it led to the closure of many psychiatric hospitals, as patients were increasingly cared for at home, in halfway houses and clinics, in regular hospitals, or not at all.

For five consecutive years, CCi has been named a Top Workplace in Orange County, California where its headquarters are located. In 2014, a librarian at the southern California campus of Everest College quit her position when she learned a student she was assisting could only read at the third-grade level, may have a developmental disability, and was unlikely to find work in his chosen field. She stated that the student was unlikely to understand the financial burdens of the enrollment documents he signed. The librarian resigned out of principle after an unsuccessful attempt to resolve the issue with administration.

Inclusion is a term used by people with disabilities and other disability rights advocates for the idea that all people should take action to freely accommodate people with a physical, mental, cognitive, and or developmental disability. For example, providing ramps and accessible toilets in meeting facilities or providing additional intervention and resources in the education system are known as 'universal design' or efforts towards the goal of inclusion. The education system has a more specific definition for disability.
During the week of April 8–12, 2018, Broward Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer included a three-page letter from a Minnesotan into the court record of the case. The letter was addressed to the judge and claimed that research into Cruz's past led the writer to believe that Cruz suffered from a developmental disability and that he was "fearful of other people and was threatened by bullies." The letter ended by claiming that Cruz appeared to be consumed by sadness and depression. The same week, a hearing was held to determine if Cruz was entitled to a public defender.
North Carolina The state of North Carolina is undertaking a comprehensive policy shift on how the government budgets for and manages resources for mental health, developmental disability, and substance abuse services. The 1915 (b)(c) Medicaid Waiver Program was chosen by the North Carolina Department of Health & Human Services, Division of Medical Assistance as a way to control and more accurately budget for the rising costs of Medicaid funded services. The 1915 (b)(c) Waiver Program was initially implemented at one pilot site in 2005 and evaluated for several years. Two expansion sites were then added in 2012.
Following the mission of the founding parents, The Arc continues to respond to the needs of children with developmental disabilities, their families, and the Frederick community. Contributions from members, civic groups, grants and the United Way allow The Arc to offer additional needed supports to people in Frederick County. Children Are Us Foundation () is a charity for people with an intellectual disability in Taiwan. The goal for this organization is to inspire and promote the potential talent of people with intellectual disability or developmental disability. Children Are Us Foundation is a non-profit private organization (NPO) which provides long term care and job training to people with Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, multiple dysfunction and other mental illnesses. It works on changing people's general perception, hoping people can understand and respect people with intellectual disability, instead of making fun of them or looking down on them.

In 2006, Winslow- King co-founded the Michigan-based music label, Earthwork Music, with local Michigan musicians with whom he was friendly.
The E.R. Johnstone Training and Research Center was a mental institution in Bordentown, Burlington County, New Jersey, United States, that housed people with developmental disability. Located adjacent to the Juvenile Medium Security Center in Bordentown, and listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the Edward R. Johnstone Training and Research Center opened in 1955 after the state closed the New Jersey Manual Training and Industrial School for Colored Youth as a result of the 1954 decision in the US Supreme Court case of Brown v. Board of Education. It was posthumously named in honor of Edward R. Johnstone.

Clinically, intellectual disability is a subtype of cognitive deficit or disabilities affecting intellectual abilities, which is a broader concept and includes intellectual deficits that are too mild to properly qualify as intellectual disability, or too specific (as in specific learning disability), or acquired later in life through acquired brain injuries or neurodegenerative diseases like dementia. Cognitive deficits may appear at any age. Developmental disability is any disability that is due to problems with growth and development. This term encompasses many congenital medical conditions that have no mental or intellectual components, although it, too, is sometimes used as a euphemism for intellectual disability.
Orlando L. Serrell (born 1968) is an "acquired savant" -- someone who exhibits savant skills after CNS injury or disease, as opposed to a person born with autistic disorder or other developmental disability. Serrell did not possess any special skills until he was struck by a baseball on the left side of his head on January 15, 1979, when he was ten years old. Serrell fell to the ground, but eventually got up and continued playing baseball. He did not get any medical treatment because he did not tell his parents; for a long while, he suffered from a headache.

Growing up with two of her siblings diagnosed with autism, Dee has been an advocate for autism awareness and mental health education since she was sixteen (16) years old. This family circumstance is also one of the reasons why she decided to take up psychology at university. The DSP works in assisting the individual with their ADLs and also acts as an advocate for the individual with a developmental disability, in communicating their needs, self-expression and goals. Supports of this type also include assistance to identify and undertake new hobbies or to access community services (such as education), learning appropriate behavior or recognition of community norms, or with relationships and expanding circles of friends. Most programs offering at-home and community support are designed with the goal of increasing the individual's independence, although it is recognized that people with more severe disabilities may never be able to achieve full independence in some areas of daily life.
Many past offenders against other people, and suspected or potential future offenders with mental health problems or an intellectual or developmental disability, are supervised in the community by forensic psychiatric teams made up of a variety of professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, and care workers. In 2010 Sarah participated in the "National College TV Internship Program" through the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences working on the set of HBO Films Cinema Verite (2012). Lotfi began production in 2012 on another World War II film Menschen (German word for 'humans') which explores developmental disability in the last days of the war. The film is deeply personal for Lotfi, since she is the older sibling to a brother and sister with Down Syndrome.
The 2006 Werribee DVD incident occurred in the Australian town of Werribee (a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria), when a group of teenage boys, who collectively called themselves the "Teenage Kings of Werribee", filmed themselves committing various criminal acts, including the sexual assault of a teenage girl with a developmental disability. They then produced a DVD of their actions, which they sold for $5 a copy, and posted their footage to YouTube under the name "Cunt: the Movie". The DVD caused widespread controversy after excerpts were broadcast by television current affairs program Today Tonight on 23 October 2006, and led to a police investigation about the content.

Boeser, who grew up in Burnsville, Minnesota, is the youngest of three children to Duke and Laurie Boeser; he has a half brother, Paul, and sister, Jessica who has a Developmental disability. He also remade Balak Palak in Malayalam as Swarna Malsyangal Balak Palak created a world record through ‘UFO Moviez’ and Valuable Edutainment as India’s first multi locational interactive Live Premiere of Marathi film on 3 January 2013.
