Sociologists use the related pair of terms "proximal causation" and "distal causation." Proximal causation: explanation of human social behaviour by considering the immediate factors, such as symbolic interaction, understanding (Verstehen), and individual milieu that influence that behaviour. Most sociologists recognize that proximal causality is the first type of power humans experience; however, while factors such as family relationships may initially be meaningful, they are not as permanent, underlying, or determining as other factors such as institutions and social networks (Naiman 2008: 5). Distal causation: explanation of human social behaviour by considering the larger context in which individuals carry out their actions.

Most Bohra communities have an established Dana (grain) Committee tasked with eliminating food wastage. Their task is to ensure that not a single grain or morsel goes to waste. There are over 6,000 Dana Committee volunteers spread across 40 countries in the world, some of whom operate sophisticated RSVP apps and other web and mobile-based platforms to ensure no wastage results from unneeded food during communal dinners. This is done through a combination of assessment of the actual needs for the dinners by determining as accurately as possible the number of people who will attend and then by taking any excess food after the event and distributing it among the needy in the locality.

Later the same month, the NTSB released its final report into the accident, citing this "non-pertinent conversation" as a contributing factor in the accident. In July 2008, United States District Judge Karl Forester ruled Delta will not be held liable for the crash, because while Comair is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Atlanta-based airline, Comair maintains its own management and policies, and employs its own pilots. In December of the following year, Forester granted a passenger family's motion for "partial summary judgment" determining, as a matter of law, that Comair's flight crew was negligent, and that this negligence was a substantial factor causing the crash of Flight 5191.
