However, within the EM total, current accounts have become more balanced since 2013 as the deterioration mainly reflects Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, which were previously running large surpluses, while many countries then running large CADs, such as all of the so-called "fragile five" (Brazil, India, Indonesia, South Africa and Turkey), have narrowed their deficits.

At the end of a two-day monetary policy review, the BOJ said it will continue to conduct money market operations so the monetary base increases at an annual pace of 1003 trillion yen ($760 billion) and maintain a negative interest rate of minus 0.1 percent to the policy-rate balances in current accounts held by financial institutions at the bank.

Excluding China, a group of 19 big emerging economies now show a current account surplus of roughly 1.5 percent, having swung from a deficit of just over 0.5 percent in 2013, according to this chart based on UBS data: A separate HSBC study showed that even after taking into account the impact of currency depreciation and slower growth, current accounts had a surplus of almost 1 percent of GDP versus a slight deficit in 2013.
