When the defenders of the palace realized they were vastly overnumbered, and that it would be impossible to defend the royal family, they agreed to hand them over to the rebels, who stated that they would transport them to custody in the Ministry of Defense. The royal family, consisting of the king, the crown prince, princess Hiyam, princess Nafissa (mother of the crown prince), princess Abadiya (the king's aunt), as well as some members of the royal staff left the palace via the kitchen. When passing the kitchen garden through a row of rebel soldiers, the soldiers opened fire.

The king was hit in the head and neck, while the crown prince, Nafissa and Abadiya were all hit in the back, and princess Hiyam in the leg or hip.

Her brother Zhangsun Wuji was one of Li Shimin's major strategists in this matter. Li Shimin was able to counter Li Jiancheng and Li Yuanji at Xuanwu Gate and kill them, and then essentially forced Emperor Gaozu to appoint him crown prince. Princess Zhangsun was accordingly named crown princess. Two months later, Emperor Gaozu yielded the throne to Li Shimin, who took the throne as Emperor Taizong.

In 493, after Crown Prince Zhangmao died, Xiao Zhaoye became crown prince; Princess He became crown princess. Outwardly, he mourned his father's death and was worried about his grandfather Emperor Wu's health, as Emperor Wu was also in ill health at the time, but when he wrote to the Crown Princess, he wrote one large character of Xi (喜, meaning "happiness") surrounded by 36 smaller Xi characters.

At approximately 8:00am the King, Crown Prince, Princess Hiyam ('Abd al-Ilah's wife), Princess Nafeesa ('Abd al-Ilah's mother), Princess Abadiya (Faisal's aunt), other members of the Iraqi Royal Family, and several servants were killed or wounded as they were leaving the palace.. Only Princess Hiyam survived although how and why she did is unclear. With their demise, the Iraqi Hashemite dynasty ended. Meanwhile, al-Said temporarily slipped the net of his would-be captors by escaping across the Tigris after being alerted by the sound of gunfire. By noon, Qasim arrived in Baghdad with his forces and set up headquarters in the Ministry of Defence building.

A tourist during the early 1990s confirmed that a mid-1980s Chevrolet Suburban (presumably a 1985 model) is used by the security detail of the Crown Prince. Princess Bajarakitiyabha sometimes drives herself in a red Mini Cooper S and a lime-green Volkswagen New Beetle with the motorcade. There are also royal cars in a convertible form for royal ceremonies, such as a Rolls-Royce Corniche and a Cadillac DTS (the hard top was transformed into a convertible top). On official royal journeys, there are a group of more than 45 cars in the motorcade including: Mercedes S-Class (W220, W221, and W222), Mercedes E-class (W210 and W211), BMW 7 Series (E38), BMW 5 Series (E39 and E60), and Mercedes S-Class (W221-W222), Mercedes Vito, and BMW 5 Series used as police cars in ivory color. For unofficial royal journeys, the cars in the motorcade are a group of about 15 cars including: BMW 7 Series (E38), BMW 5 Series (E39 and E60), Mercedes S-Class (W221 and W222), Mercedes E-class (W210 and W211) Honda Accord Toyota Camry, and Nissan Teana.
