There has been interest, mainly in developing nations, to develop a cremator heated by concentrated solar energy. The story is set in 1930s Prague, where the cremator Karel Kopfrkingl lives and works. Kopfrkingl slowly devolves from an odd but relatively well- meaning cremator of the dead into a murderer of his family and mass murderer who runs the ovens at the extermination camps due to the influence of the Nazi party and Tibetan Buddhism, under which he believes his murders are "liberating" the souls of the diseased into a better life. The film is made up of mostly monologues from Karel Kopfrkingl that follow his descent into madness and all the scenes center on this character, often with frequent closeups of his face. It is often recognized as a follower of German Expressionist film and also as an example of the Czechoslovak New Wave.

In Australia, the deceased is cremated in a coffin supplied by the undertaker. Reusable or cardboard coffins are becoming popular, with several manufacturers now supplying them. Johann Niemann (4 August 1913 – 14 October 1943) was a German SS and Holocaust perpetrator who was deputy commandant of Sobibor extermination camp during the Operation Reinhard. He also served as a Leichenverbrenner (corpse cremator) at Grafeneck, Brandenburg, and Bernburg during the Aktion T4, the SS "euthanasia" program. Niemann was killed during the Sobibor prisoner uprising in 1943.

Juraj Herz (4 September 1934 – 8 April 2018) was a Slovak film director, actor, and scene designer, associated with the Czechoslovak New Wave movement of the 1960s. He is best known for his 1968 horror/black comedy The Cremator, often cited as one of the best Czechoslovak films of all time, though many of his other films achieved cult status. He directed for both film and television, and in the latter capacity he directed episodes of a French-Czech television series based on George Simenon's Maigret novels.

Kelvin Grove Cemetery is Palmerston North's main cemetery, performing about 180 burials and 400 cremations each year. It was opened in 1927 to replace the old Terrace End Cemetery on Napier Road, the crematorium and chapel were added in 1954, and a modern gas-fired cremator was installed in 2003. The cemetery allows flower garden tributes, unlike other cemeteries in the region. In 2018, a group of four roosters and three chickens were trapped at the cemetery and sent to slaughter, several years after they had been dumped there.

Natural burial—also called "green burial"—is the process by which a body is returned to the earth to decompose naturally in soil, and in some cases even protect native and endangered wildlife. Natural burial became popularized in the United Kingdom in the early 1990s by Ken West, a professional cremator operator for the city of Carlisle, responding to the U.K's call for changes in government that aligned with the United Nations' Environmental Program Local Agenda 21. In addition, there are multiple green burial sites in the United States. Green burials are developing in Canada (Victoria, BC, and Cobourg, Ontario), as well as in Australia and Ireland.

The one corpse that had not been found for several days is never shown on screen. No bodies show the gaunt figure of one who has died after a long illness, or the cuts and bruises of an accident victim. Japanologist Mark R. Mullins writes that the gratitude shown in Departures would probably not have occurred in real life; according to Coffinman, there "is nothing lower on the social scale than the mortician, and the truth of the matter is that [the Japanese people] fear the coffinman and the cremator just as much as death and the corpse". Symbolism has been found in the film's use of cherry blossoms.

Many of the events from the comics are altered in the animated film. Nursery Crimes formed in Melbourne in early 1989 by Paddy Chong on bass guitar; Dave Dixon on guitar and backing vocals; Caine Knight on lead guitar; Russell Hopkinson on drums (ex-Vicious Circle, Bamboos, Kryptonics, Cremator); and Phil Rose (aka Richard Andrew Rose) on lead vocals (ex-Slush Puppies). Australian musicologist, Ian McFarlane, described how their "sound was built around melodic yet crunching guitar riffs, frenetic arrangements, rapid fire lead vocals and sweet harmonies". Their debut single, "All Torn up Inside", was issued on Au Go Go Records late in the following year, together with their extended play, No Time for That Crime. Chong left the group to join Girl Monstar and then The Fuck Fucks, he was replaced on bass guitar by Davarj Thomas, who also provided backing vocals.

Brütal Legend follows the story of Eddie Riggs (voiced by Jack Black), who is "the world's best roadie" for "the world's worst 'heavy metal' band", Kabbage Boy. Much of the game takes place in an unnamed world inspired by heavy metal music, created by, according to the game's mythology, Ormagöden, The Eternal Firebeast, Cremator of the Sky, and Destroyer of the Ancient World. In this alternate world, the human race is enslaved by a race of demons, led by Doviculus, Emperor of the Tainted Coil, (voiced by Tim Curry). Doviculus is assisted by his glam metal human minion, General Lionwhyte (voiced by Rob Halford and based on David Bowie with the name being an allusion to glammetal band White Lion) whose hair is so big "and luscious" that he uses it to fly, flapping it like a pair of broad wings.

Leona incriminates Bel, and Bel will prey. But Luciano, who discovered the son of Omar, became president of Luxus by right of inheritance and decides to make an agreement with Leona: Bel She released from prison, and he offers him the position of the Presidency of Luxus to her. Leona is commanding everything and everyone, but mad with delusions of cleaning, including requiring all employees to paint his hair blonde like her. One day she calls and Dudley to visit her son, he will, and suddenly, she locks the doors and windows, locks himself in with Dudley Luxus, and Ithaca fire in the room where they are, he is desperate, but Cremator, repentant and trying to prove he always liked the friend enters a shortcut into the room, and tells Dudley that there is a way out.

Many of these films chose the Holocaust as their focus, and Slovak director Ján Kadár, co- directing with frequent collaborator, Czech director Elmar Klos, achieved a major international success in this genre with the Czech-produced, Slovak- language The Shop on Main Street (Obchod na korze), which won a Special Mention when it played at the Cannes Film Festival in 1965 and went on to win the Oscar for Best Foreign-Language Film the following year. The Czech feature The Cremator (Spalovač mrtvol, 1968), Slovak-born Juraj Herz's grotesque black comedy about the social context of the Final Solution, is a cult film in both the Czech and Slovak republics and has an increasing reputation internationally. Herz is a concentration camp survivor, but he never made a film directly addressing that experience. The second half of the decade saw the emergence of a new generation of directors.

Seriés Aphōnos, a British subsidiary label of Bronze Rat Records, focuses on instrumental music, soundtracks, spoken word, and other curio curations. It is curated by Welsh musician, producer and label owner Andrew Zammit. Releases include Soft Rains by Zarelli (a musical reinterpretation of a Leonard Nimoy- narrated Ray Bradbury short story from The Martian Chronicles), the first vinyl release of the Krzysztof Komeda-composed soundtrack to Roman Polanski's Dance of the Vampires/Fearless Vampire Killers, Berlin avant-punk collective Candy Bomber (whose album features guest spots from musicians including Gemma Ray, Kid Congo Powers, Toby Dammit and Jochen Arbeit (Einstürzende Neubauten), Cremator (London synth musician Matt Thompson (Zoltan, Guapo)), and The Still, who are a cast of international musicians (including Chris Abrahams of The Necks) who record in Berlin. The Still was featured in British music magazine Mojo 's list of 50 best albums of 2016.
