Crack rock steady is a punk rock fusion-genre, which combines elements of crust punk, black metal and ska punk. Lyrics often focus on themes such as drug-use, religion, politics and social issues. Other genres sometimes incorporated in conjunction with the style include hardcore punk classical music and heavy metal. Notable bands within the genre include Choking Victim, Leftöver Crack, Morning Glory and Star Fucking Hipsters.

Their production also emphasized instrumentation and was a departure for Ocean after Nostalgia, Ultras reliance on samples. In the studio, they reworked the musical ideas from their writing sessions, incorporated live production, and ornamented their songs musically. Ocean enlisted Los Angeles-based producer Om'Mas Keith to help him rework the songs. They added live drums to "Crack Rock", "Monks", and "Sweet Life", which was originally produced as a digital track.

Nixon married gospel artist Candi Staton in 2010. They divorced in 2012. Otisnixon.com, Otis Nixon's On-Track Ministries Nixon was arrested May 4, 2013, in Cherokee County, Georgia, after a crack rock and pipe were found in his vehicle during a traffic stop. Leftöver Crack has been banned from performing in many venues in New York City, such as ABC No Rio and the Knitting Factory. However, they still play at banned venues under a different name, Crack Rock Steady 7 or individually as solo acts. They repeatedly have trouble touring in certain countries, especially Canada, due to members having prior criminal records. They were denied entry into Canada for a tour scheduled at the end of 2007.

In purer forms, crack rocks appear as off-white nuggets with jagged edges, with a slightly higher density than candle wax. Purer forms of crack resemble a hard plastic in crystalline form, which is brittle. Like cocaine in other forms, crack rock acts as a local anesthetic, numbing the tongue or mouth only where directly placed. Purer forms of crack will sink in water or melt at the edges when near a flame (crack vaporizes at 90 °C, 194 °F).

Originally formed in Maine in 1997, the band relocated to Boston, Massachusetts in 1998, where it was based until their breakup. The original band members were Bryan Brothian, Brett Threat, Westie, and Tubby Tim. In 1998, the band recorded and self-released their first EP, The Kids Will Revolt Against All Authority, on Crack Rock Records. Soon after, Mike Graves and Petrov Curtis joined the band (on drums and guitar respectively) and AGT began playing live shows in Boston and New York.

Calling All Cars on the Vegas Strip is the debut studio album of the band Jucifer, originally released in 1998 through the independent label Crack Rock records and then in 2000 after have signed to Capricorn Records label. The album contains a mixture of metal, punk, hardcore, doom, sludge, alternative elements and scratch disk sound effects between track to track. This style wasn't explored by many bands in the late 1990s, was part of their sound during the 2000s, until the release of Throned in Blood in 2010.

The Cook Up: A Crack Rock Memoir published in 2016 by Grand Central Publishing, is a memoir that details the operations of a drug empire following Watkins' brother Bip's death, his acceptance to Georgetown University and the struggle to leave the trade behind. It was named as an editor's pick by the New York Times in May 2016. Kirkus Reviews described the book as "A familiar story to fans of The Wire, but Watkins provides a gritty, vivid first-person document of a desperate demographic." In 2017, The Cook Up was a Books for a Better Life Award Finalists.

From early on Leftöver Crack experienced a publicized dispute with their record label, Hellcat Records (a subsidiary of Epitaph Records) over censorship regarding their proposed album title Shoot the Kids at School, and its accompanying artwork. On September 11, 2001 Leftöver Crack released their debut album Mediocre Generica. In order to avoid further contractual disputes with the label, the band released their split EP with F-Minus Baby Jesus, Sliced Up In The Manger under the pseudonym The Crack Rock Steady 7 in 2001 with Hell Bent Records. For their second album Fuck World Trade (2004) the bandmoved to Jello Biafra's label Alternative Tentacles, and recorded the album in Chicago with engineer/producer Steve Albini.

"Super Rich Kids" references the thumping piano line of Elton John's 1973 song "Bennie and the Jets" and addresses young, wealthy characters' ennui and fears of the financial crisis with dry humor. "Pilot Jones" employs magic realism and escapist imagery, and depicts an emotional dependency between drug addicts, who confuse friendship with sexual love in their support of each other. The swooning song contains hazy electronic blips, impressionistic textures, experimental beat patterns, refracted sound effects, and vocal improvisation expressing the narrator's "high". "Crack Rock" depicts a crack addict, likens love to the highs and lows of drug use, and broadly addresses corruption, broken homes, gun violence, and government indifference to rising crack-related deaths.

As a result of legal disputes with Hellcat Records, the band were effectively left in limbo for approximately two years, unable to leave their current label, yet also unable to sign to another - as well as being unable to release any new material under the name of Leftöver Crack. However, the band did manage to bend the rules of their contract slightly, releasing a split EP with F-Minus as "The Crack Rock Steady 7" - effectively Leftover Crack working under aliases with additional musicians. The EP was titled "Baby Jesus Sliced Up In The Manger" and was released on November 27, 2003. In February 2003, the band began to record the songs that they had written and developed over the last three years with esteemed engineer Steve Albini, a majority of which would see a release on their second album.
