The first several years of Next Generation had a heavy matte laminated finish cover stock, unlike the glossy paper covers of its competitors. The magazine moved away from this cover style in early 1999, only for it to return again in late 2000.

Lane conditions are created by cleaning the lane surface and then applying lane oil in a pattern via a lane oiling machine. Lane oil is designed to both protect the surface and influence bowling ball hook. Ball hook is the product of its surface material (cover stock), balance (core), direction of travel, speed of delivery, and spin (angular momentum). As the ball travels towards the pins it interacts with the lane surface and reacts to friction.

Card stock for craft use comes in a wide variety of textures and colors. An Oscar Friedheim card cutting and scoring machine from 1889 Card stock, also called cover stock and pasteboard, is paper that is thicker and more durable than normal writing and printing paper, but thinner and more flexible than other forms of paperboard. Card stock is often used for business cards, postcards, playing cards, catalogue covers, scrapbooking, and other applications requiring more durability than regular paper gives. The surface usually is smooth; it may be textured, metallic, or glossy.

In 1950, Bill Gillies introduced cover art featuring a close-up of Nancy outdoors, with snow on the ground, examining a letter with a rather shocked expression on her face. This art was retained on all covers, including direct printed picture cover stock, until the 1968 text was introduced. The revised cover art by Rudy Nappi shows Nancy in a pink suit with the letter in her hand and an overlay image of the letter on a blue background. An uncredited illustrator provided a frontispiece and five plain paper internal drawings featuring rare glimpses of the interior of the Drew home.

In the January 1992 edition of Dragon (Issue #177), Mike Bethke thought this "was an excellent game to get people started in miniatures gaming." He felt the rulebook was clearly written and amply illustrated, with good examples given for each situation. He thought the miniatures were reasonably well cast, although he criticized each miniature for having "a very annoying stub of plastic in the middle of its back [that] must be carefully cut away." He wasn't enthralled with the paper status counters, which he felt cluttered the playing surface, and also suggested that players glue them to cover stock to make them sturdier.
