"I think free freezes are good, but not when it's part of a bill with other things that puts consumers and the economy at risk," said Mike Litt, consumer campaign director at consumer advocacy group U.S. PIRG.
The Center for Science in the Public Interest, a Washington, D.C.-based food watchdog and consumer advocacy group, released its annual "Xtreme Eating Awards" Monday, a list they call the biggest "nutritional nightmares" in the restaurant industry.

Truth in Advertising, a consumer advocacy group, sent a letter to the FTC about Neora in 2016, and has been archiving a collection of its exaggerated claims about how much money sellers earn, as well as the false health claims about EHT.

A "mystery shopper" study done last year by Georgia Watch, a consumer advocacy group, found that the prices quoted to prepare a return for a low-income single mother at local stores, including both independent shops and chains, ranged from $125 to $457.
But many corporate owners, keen to make a profit, now aim at a more middle-class clientele looking for vacation or retirement homes, said Watson, who advocates on behalf of the Federation of Manufactured Home Owners of Florida, a consumer advocacy group.
Physicians who continue to use robotic and minimally invasive approaches for cancer treatment "in the face of the evidence may put themselves in legal jeopardy," said Dr. Michael Carome, director of the health research group at Public Citizen, a consumer advocacy organization.
Consumer's Union, a nonprofit consumer advocacy group, says the pods can be mistaken for candy by very young children and it has petitioned regulators and manufacturers to change the product in ways that make it less appealing to kids and the containers more child-proof.

Craig Spiezle, executive director of the Online Trust Alliance, a consumer advocacy group, said something similar could happen with online advertising, where stakeholders agree to observe best practices, including respecting Do Not Track, or D.N.T., which is a preference consumers can activate in their browsers.
YouTube is facing a new complaint from a coalition of consumer advocacy groups that claims that the popular video website has broken children's privacy laws by collecting information on underage viewers in order to sell ads, according to a report in The New York Times.

But S. Derek Turner, Research Director for consumer advocacy firm Free Press, tells Motherboard he's particularly concerned that the standard could have a decidedly negative impact on the political advertising landscape in the wake of media consolidation and our quest to quell rampant disinformation.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Seven consumer advocacy groups wrote to Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Thursday to ask him to consider blocking AT&T's plan to buy Time Warner on the grounds that it will lead to higher prices and slow innovation in showing video online.
"We are very concerned that the shutdown may lead to lapses in food safety, but we don't know where or when these will happen," said Sarah Sorscher, deputy director of regulatory affairs at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a consumer advocacy group.
Not only did the company's stock immediately take off after news of this rescue from oversight, but consumer advocacy and good government groups quickly pointed out that Mulvaney had taken thousands in campaign donations from World Acceptance when he was a member of Congress.
"With a lot of prisoners I suspect that it's more about how we get through the day," said Adam K. Levin, former director of the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs and a founder of identity protection and consumer advocacy companies CyberScout and Credit.com.
OOF: Two private equity firms trying to influence legislation to end surprise medical billing have contributed heavily to the leaders of the House Ways and Means Committee, according to a report by the liberal consumer advocacy group Public Citizen, provided first to The Health 202.
"The results from Maine and Virginia send a very clear signal that the public is interested in moving past the type of obstruction we've seen from policymakers in some states," said Katherine Howitt, associate director of policy at Community Catalyst, a consumer advocacy group.
This month, a coalition of consumer advocacy groups contended that YouTube had been aware that children 12 and younger have been watching the main site and that, therefore, it had been violating a privacy law that requires parental consent before collecting and mining their data.
"The various ideas for how to use revenue from a financial transaction tax would almost certainly help people of modest means more than the tax would [negatively] affect people of modest means," said Taylor Lincoln, research director at Public Citizen, a consumer advocacy group.
Allen Grunes spent more than a decade at the DOJ Antitrust Division and is the co-founder of The Konkurrenz Group in Washington, D.C., which advises small businesses, Fortune 500 firms, consumer advocacy groups and governments on issues of competition, privacy and consumer protection law.
Consumer advocacy groups have also filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, accusing DeVos of having violated the Administrative Procedure Act by postponing the Borrower Defense to Repaying rule, which was set to take effect on July 1.
Lindsey Wolko, founder of the nonprofit Center for Pet Safety, a consumer advocacy group, sorts essential safety gear into two categories: distraction prevention, which keeps the dog out of the front seat, and crash protection, designed to provide the best chance to avoid injuries.
Eliot Fishman, who ran Medicaid's state demonstrations program until May, and is now a senior director at the consumer advocacy group Families USA, said the Obama administration examined the evidence when states asked for work requirements before, and found them inconsistent with the program's purpose.
So I think that we're just beginning, and as we grow, advocacy and especially consumer advocacy and working with brands such as Unilever, who have said "we are going to be 100 percent sustainable," which is just an insane mission for a brand to do.
"If approved, this deal would especially hurt consumers seeking lower-cost wireless plans, as the combined company's plans would likely increase while competitors AT&T and Verizon would have even less incentive to lower prices," said Phillip Berenbroick, lawyer for the consumer advocacy group Public Knowledge.
The states involved are home to so many of T-Mobile and Sprint's customers that the lawsuit poses a significant challenge to the companies' plans, said Gene Kimmelman, a former Justice Department antitrust official who now leads Public Knowledge, a consumer advocacy organization that opposes the merger.
But it's still bad news for Facebook — and good news for users — that a consumer advocacy group is finding success as it pushes back against the social network's generous data sharing policies, which are often more a benefit to the company than to people using the service.
While consumer advocacy group, BEUC, criticizes the Commission for postponing what it dubs "hard decisions to later" — calling for it to make a clear commitment to update the bloc's product safety and liability rules to ensure they are fit for the risks of the AI age.
"(The agency) needs to be empowered to protect consumers against new hazards that may emerge, and to ensure automated systems work as they're supposed to without placing consumers at risk," said Friedman, now director of cars and product policy for the consumer advocacy group Consumers Union.
"This issue has been under consideration at the FCC for two years now, and the benefit of further delay is unclear," John Bergmayer, senior counsel at Public Knowledge, the DC-based consumer advocacy group that has championed the set-top box reform proposal, said in a statement.
"It is a conflict of interest, because the interests of the pharmaceutical industry, from whom they are getting support, may be different from the interests of the patients," said Dr. Michael Carome, the director of the Health Research Group at Public Citizen, a consumer advocacy group.
Also on Thursday, Washington-based consumer advocacy group Public Citizen released documents that show that Andrew Smith, director of the FTC's bureau of consumer protection, will have to recuse himself from all matters concerning 120 companies -- two of which are currently under investigation by the agency.
Stacy J. Sanders, the federal policy director at the Medicare Rights Center, a consumer advocacy group, welcomed the proposal, saying it would reduce the incentive for doctors to prescribe drugs that are expensive and ultimately unaffordable for low- and middle-income people who have no supplemental insurance.
"Given the credit bureaus' past issues with the accuracy and security of data, we are watching them closely as they experiment with new business models that give them access to more personal information," said Mike Litt, consumer campaign director for U.S. PIRG, a nonprofit consumer advocacy group.
Mr. Trump has also chosen Noah Phillips, chief counsel for Senator John Cornyn, Republican of Texas, and Rohit Chopra, a fellow at a consumer advocacy group, to fill the remaining two seats at the agency, said Natalie M. Strom, assistant press secretary at the White House.
Even products sold directly by Amazon got more expensive as news of the virus spread, with prices on one in six listings for sanitizers or masks surging by at least 50 percent in February, according to an analysis by the consumer advocacy organization US PIRG Education Fund.
"The Trump administration is hellbent on repealing the clean car standards, which was the most significant US governmental action program to date to avert climate change and would save consumers tens of billions if left intact," said Robert Weissman, president of the consumer advocacy organization Public Citizen.
"Part of the problem that we're experiencing here is the explosion of the internet, and computing has transformed markets so dramatically that traditional sectors are kind of disappearing," said Gene Kimmelman, a former Justice Department official and senior advisor to Public Knowledge, a consumer advocacy group.
The groups opposing the FCC include a hodgepodge of tech companies and consumer advocacy groups, as well as state and local officials—among them: the Mozilla Corporation; Etsy; Free Press; Public Knowledge; the National Hispanic Media Coalition; the Open Technology Institute; the Center for Democracy & Technology, and others.
"I realized I was going to have to be self-employed in order to maintain any sort of possibility of finding a good job," said Moore, who is now an attorney based in California, focusing on consumer advocacy issues including cyberabuse, inaccurate credit reports and debt collection abuse.
Last month, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce published a report arguing the taxes would hurt the business community and retirees, while consumer advocacy organization Public Citizen argued that higher-income people would have more costs associated with the taxes than those on the lower end of the income spectrum.
A consumer advocacy group called the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) is alleging that PepsiCo dishonestly markets the drinks with claims like "only the best ingredients" and "just the healthiest fruits and vegetables" when, in reality, they contain a lot of sugar and aren't particularly nutritious.
A consumer advocacy group on Friday urged Tesla to fix what it termed as "flaws" in Autopilot after a preliminary government report said a Model X driver did not have his hands on the vehicle's steering wheel in the final six seconds before a fatal crash on March 23.
"While the most likely outcome is for Charter to settle, it is not impossible for New York to decide that Charter is simply not trustworthy to fulfill its obligations, and demand they sell off their systems," said Harold Feld, senior vice president of consumer-advocacy group Public Knowledge.
"HIPPA applies when you are transferring data between doctors, or insurance companies, but as soon as you give that information to a third party it is jailbroken from HIPPA... once it's out, it's out," Emily Peterson-Cassin, an attorney at consumer advocacy organization Public Citizen, told The Hill.
