An example of conservational squatting is Huize Ivicke in Wassenaar, a building which the owner refuses to repair. The villa was placed on a list of the most endangered monuments in Europe and it was squatted in 2018 by people wanting to prevent further dilapidation. About a hundred years after the third consecration, the construction of the Chapel of St Nicholas was begun. A new south portal was built, east of which two more chapels for St Anne and St George were built in the first quarter of the fourteenth century. Since part of the northwest tower collapsed in 1429, it was under reconstruction until 1472. The resulting tower has some late gothic details but strictly adhered to the original shape of the tower, making it an extremely earlier example of conservational restoration. The journal of the club described its aims—in 1955—as follows: "The Caloola Club is an Expedition Society founded to inculcate a love of natural wildernesses, to encourage an appreciation of Conservation and Nature Protection and to widen the knowledge of the Australian Scene. We seek enjoyment in landscape and natural bushlands and are interested in the history, natural history and geography of our country. All our activities are a means of arousing interest in conservational matters … camping, bushwalking, nature excursion, canoeing, photography, cycling, touring by motor, discussion and lecture … all are aimed at bringing us closer to the bushlands, the rural countryside and Man’s use of the National Heritage." Members of the club canoed 400 miles of the Murray River from Towong to Corowa in January 1950.

During the Enlightenment in Europe social commentators and philosophers began to realize that people themselves could change society and change their way of life. Instead of being made completely by gods, there was increasing room for the idea that people themselves made their own society—and not only that, as Giambattista Vico argued, because people made their own society, they could also fully comprehend it. This gave rise to new sciences, or proto- sciences, which claimed to provide new scientific knowledge about what society was like, and how one may change it for the better.The following annotated reference list appears in J. The reserve lies in a transition zone between the Chiquitano dry forests and the Madeira-Tapajós moist forests of the Amazon rainforest, with elements of both ecoregions, and it is of great conservational importance owing to its rich biodiversity. The San Pablo and Blanco Rivers are rich in nutrients and cause seasonal flooding in the areas closest to the plains, forming the so-called "Várzea forest", which regulate the rise and fall of the water levels. The natural flood cycle in the reserve zone is essential to the maintenance of the Baures and Magdalena wetlands in Beni, in northern Bolivia. Wood is extracted from the forest for construction, resins, fibers, fruit, and medicinal plants, which are of great important to the local population and for animals, such as the marayaú palm (Bactris major), the chontilla palm (Bactris gasipaes), Ampularia sp.

The feral goats of Scotland were brought in by Neolithic-era humans for farming purposes but were likely abandoned around the late 1700s due to the Highland Clearances, the evictions of a significant number of tenants in the Scottish Highlands and Islands. These people were unable to bring their livestock with them and, instead, had to leave them to roam the Highlands. The goats from this collective of livestock were able to get a foothold in this environment however and within little time, the population of Highland goats exploded to about 3,000 to 4,000. Though they are very common to see, they are also heavily considered both a nonnative, invasive species by the Scottish government as well as a major threat to the Scottish Highlands with there being evidence of the goats contributing to grazing pressures on at least 18 different conservational sites.

Greive has supported numerous conservation, arts and literacy initiatives and projects around the world, and presently holds the following offices: Founding Governor – The Taronga Foundation, Chairman – The Taronga Foundation Poetry Prize, Life Benefactor – Durrell Wildlife Conservational Trust (UK), Patron – Painted Dog Conservation Inc (Africa), International Conservation Ambassador – Fort Worth Zoo (USA), Council Member of the Australian Youth Orchestra, Board Member – Australia Poetry Centre, Ambassador – Dymocks Literacy Foundation. In 2002 Greive teamed up with famed Japanese wildlife photographer, Mitsuaki Iwago, to produce a book on biodiversity entitled Priceless – The Vanishing Beauty of a Fragile Planet. Greive donated all his author royalties to the Taronga Foundation, an Australasian wildlife conservation charity. The book has inspired numerous people to take positive action in regards to wildlife conservation, including British filmmaker, Steve Piper, who went on to make an acclaimed documentary about critically endangered Scottish Wildcats.
