Having risen the easy way, it is not even certain such a prince has the skill and strength to stand on his own feet. This is not necessarily true in every case.

There was some initial cynicism among the Chinese public about the intent of the campaign and its effectiveness. Earlier on, domestic and international observers commented on the possibility that the campaign is an emblematic feature of Chinese political culture which has, since its imperial days, invariably attempted tackling corruption in a high- profile manner when a new leader comes to power. The 2014 ranking of countries by the Corruption Perceptions Index actually ranked China lower than a year before, falling to 100th from 80th place. However, the extent and reach of the campaign has surprised even the most seasoned Chinese political observers.

Another important impetus came from the oracles of the Tiburtine Sibyl, first recorded in Latin around the year 1000; its legend proved particularly adaptable to rulers all over Europe, containing as it did a list of emperors and kings leading up to the Last Emperor which could be revised or added to as political and dynastic circumstances required. It still had great currency in the fifteenth century.

The woman he chooses is a rotund devout Puritan woman named Maud Leggs who immediately begins to change Coriander's life. Though her stepmother brings the child of her previous marriage, Hester, who dearly loves Coriander, it is not enough to make up for Maud's cruel treatment of Coriander. Coriander's father is away longer and longer on business as Cromwell comes to power and a warrant is put out for his arrest.

This can be problematic particularly when a new government comes to power by illegal means, such as a coup d'état, or when an existing government stays in power by fixing an election. Manfred discovers Shasa's bastard status and attempts to make it public in order to destroy his brother's political career, but Centaine, who has been following Manfred ever since his father's imprisonment, threatens to do the same to him if he does so, revealing that he is her son in the process. Mother and son lament how badly relations between them have fallen, but Centaine sadly acknowledges that they can never reconcile. Regardless, the National Party comes to power in 1948, with Manfred announcing its intention to institute the policy of Apartheid beforehand. Following the election, Manfred, now Deputy Minister of Justice, arranges a pardon for his father and takes possession of the files on White Sword, which he destroys.
