Poor inventor Michael O'Reilly (Pearce) is an immigrant from Ireland living in the United States. When he suddenly comes into money, he sends his daughter Patsy (Love) is sent to an exclusive boarding school. The snobby students shun her until she claims to be an Irish princess, and they then demand to see her coat of arms. To meet this need, her father buys the family heirlooms of the destitute Irish Windbourne estate.

Armitage later comes into money but squanders it all away. Years pass and Giovanni's daughter Elisa grows up and becomes involved with a young artist named Paul Winston, who hires her as a model. Giovanni finds out where Kirkham lives, and plans to kidnap Norma and hold her for ransom, but his kidnap plan is foiled. Kirkham suffers a heart attack when he sees Giovanni appear at a party in his home, and when Giovanni sees his daughter Elisa dancing at the party, he loses his sanity and jumps off the roof to his death.

As a descendant of an impoverished Polish noble family, young Wokulski is forced to work as a waiter at Hopfer's, a Warsaw restaurant, while dreaming of a life in science. After taking part in the failed 1863 Uprising against Tsarist Russia, he is sentenced to exile in Siberia. On eventual return to Warsaw, he becomes a salesman at Mincel's haberdashery. Marrying the late owner's widow (who eventually dies), he comes into money and uses it to set up a partnership with a Russian merchant he had met while in exile.

He also briefly appeared as himself in the film The Candidate (1972). In the television series All in the Family's third season, its tenth episode ('Mike Comes Into Money'), originally broadcast on November 4, 1972 and issued on DVD in 2004, is devoted to Mike and Gloria Stivic's volunteer work for, and donation to, McGovern's presidential campaign, over Archie Bunker's strenuous objection. That season's second episode ('Archie's Fraud'), broadcast on 9/23/72, addresses McGovern's tax reform proposal and features supporters of his presidential campaign. Comedian George Carlin said he voted for McGovern in 1972 and never voted again afterward.

Marrying the late owner's widow (who eventually dies), he comes into money and uses it to set up a partnership with a Russian merchant he had met while in exile. The two merchants go to Bulgaria during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878, and Wokulski makes a fortune supplying the Russian Army. Napoleons I–III, and Napoleon III's son, Prince "Loulou" Julian Ochorowicz The enterprising Wokulski now proves a romantic at heart, falling in love with Izabela, daughter of the vacuous, bankrupt aristocrat, Tomasz Łęcki. The manager of Wokulski's Warsaw store, Ignacy Rzecki, is a man of an earlier generation, a modest bachelor who lives on memories of his youth, which was a heroic chapter in his own life and that of Europe.
