Ricco/Maresca, which in recent years has presented vernacular photographs and Mexican pulp-paperback cover art at its Chelsea location, will include the sometimes mystifyingly, semi-abstract drawings in pencil and colored pencil on paper of the Austrian Leopold Strobl, an artist associated with Galerie Gugging, a component of the Art Brut Center Gugging, near Vienna.

The items he pointed out in a visit to his Seattle home chronicle his 18 years there: There's a colored-pencil drawing of him and his cat by Troy Gua; a painting by a neighbor of her bathroom, which is identical to his; and several pieces acquired through trades with artists he has befriended over time.

Colored pencil on paper and cut-up images invoke thoughts of childhood and long-dormant muscle memory; thus they manage to eschew the pretense of high art by accessing that inherent Rausch — a sort of physiological drunkenness or affective intoxication that makes art possible, referenced in Fredric Jameson's The Ancients and the Postmoderns — worn down by life's sandy curves and gradations.

And within his works on paper, there are more distinctions to be made, depending on the instrument he is using — brush, graphite, colored pencil, or crayon In two drawings from 1994-95, one done in crayon and the other in graphite, the viewer gets a sense of what Whitney can achieve working with lines made by a particular kind of drawing tool.

Two scribbly figures drawn on deep red and blue paper in Ann Hirsch's colored-pencil diptych "Red period/Blue period with Tanner and Eta" struggle to assert themselves against backgrounds of overpowering anxiety, while the raised lines that cover Jacolby Satterwhite's 3D-printed "Metonyms" are based on drawings left behind by his mother, who suffered from schizophrenia and died in 2016.

One of the stories I discovered for myself later after leaving the gallery concerns the work of 77-year-old artist Helen Rae whose graphite and colored pencil image of a woman with dark hair, a white dress and matching white boots is curious because the figure is doing something with her leg that no matter how long I gaze at it, I can't quite figure out.

Satisfied and delighted, blessings now counted — swimming, night, bed, poetry, good friends — sleep comes easily to Bo. Crowther's book has all the delightful strangeness of Margaret Wise Brown and Garth Williams's classic "Little Fur Family," but "Stories of the Night" takes place in a hand-wrought, colored-pencil forest made resplendent with rich tones, particularly a shocking pink, so warm and cheerful it fills the woods with joy.

Swinging back to yet another set of aesthetic concerns (and it's remarkable how well a show so disparate in media and scale hangs together), Lula Blocton and Samia Halaby present paintings (two by Blocton in oil on linen) and drawings (three by Halaby in wax crayon and colored pencil on paper); within the context of a group, the use of such traditional means as oil paint or pencil on an unviolated rectangular support would seem out of place if not for the artists' individualistic takes on convention.

Other superb drawings to watch out for include "Moro Rock and Morrow Bay Near San-Luis Obispo California" (ink and colored pencil on paper, circa 2212), by Joseph E. Yoakum, a favorite artist of the Chicago Imagists of the 187s-1838s (Carl Hammer Gallery, Chicago), and, from New York's Ricco/Maresca Gallery, a recently surfaced, rare work from Martín Ramírez, "Untitled (Landscape with Arched Tree)" (graphite, tempera, and crayon on paper, 1953), in which the Mexican-born artist used one of his familiar, proscenium-like forms to frame a patch of a verdant, almost Hockneyesque landscape.
