Andrew Brown is a South African novelist influenced by William Boyd and Ian McEwan, police reservist in the South African Police Service (SAPS), and an advocate. He is the author of four novels: Inyenzi, which centres on the Rwandan genocide, and the crime novels of Coldsleep Lullaby, Refuge and Solace. Brown is also the author of one non-fiction work, Street Blues, in which he writes about his experiences as a police reservist. Brown was the recipient of the 2006 Sunday Times Fiction Prize for Coldsleep Lullaby, and his work has been shortlisted for both the Alan Paton Award and the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize (Africa Region).

Current era is the 25th Century. The development of coldsleep technology and mastery of nuclear fusion engines enable easy travel within our solar system, and the possibility of extrasolar colonization. The overwhelming desire to escape the restrictions of life on Earth drive some to establish illegal "black" colonies without the consent of government. The Secessionist Wars ensue and the first intergalactic fleets of warships are created.

Lunzie's injured by a door, and is put into coldsleep once again. When she wakes up 12 years have passed, and 'Tee' has spent most of it looking for her, signing up with the FSP fleet. However, their reunion is marred by his having moved on from her, and started a new relationship, however, they part ways as friends, and Lunzie finally gets to meet her even larger family on Alpha Centauri. They are delighted to meet her, but she finds them hide- bound and dull, living on a planet that is over populated and heavily polluted.

Most notably, Andrew Brown was the recipient of the Sunday Times Fiction Prize for Coldsleep Lullaby in 2006. In addition, he was shortlisted for the Sunday Times Alan Paton award in 2009 for his non-fiction book Street Blues: The experiences of a reluctant policeman; and the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize (Africa Region) for Refuge.. His books are published in South Africa, Germany, the Netherlands, the United States of America and Canada. In April 2014 he released his new book, Devil's Harvest, which is a political thriller set in South Sudan: the book is due for release in Germany in 2015.

The Dormire is a starship carrying thousands of prospective colonists from Earth to Artemis, a planet in the Tau Ceti star system. All the passengers are in coldsleep; only a six-person crew of cloned former criminals remains awake through the generations-long journey, each of them recloned and reimprinted with their continually updated memories as they age and die. But something has gone wrong. The latest clone of crew member Maria Arena awakens twenty-five years into the voyage to discover her most recent self, and those of the rest of the crew, murdered, and her accumulated memories of the whole trip wiped.

An expedition from Straumli Realm, an ambitious young human civilization in the high Beyond, investigates a five-billion-year-old data archive in the low Transcend that offers the possibility of unimaginable riches. The expedition's facility, High Lab, is gradually compromised by a dormant superintelligence within the archive later known as the Blight. However, shortly before the Blight's final "flowering", two self-aware entities created similarly to the Blight plot to aid the humans before the Blight can escape. Recognizing the danger of what they have awakened, the researchers at High Lab attempt to flee in two ships, one carrying all the adults and the second carrying all the children in "coldsleep boxes".

His work has been seen at numerous international film festivals including Sundance, Montreal, Tokyo, Florence, London, Leipzig, Leeds, Cape Town, Deauville, New York, Munich, and Berlin. Wacks has written several screenplays including, Recoil based on the Jim Thompson novel, "No Cure for Love", "My African Heart", "Coldsleep Lullaby", and "Stuck". He served as Chair of the Visual and Media Arts Department at Emerson College, Head of the Film Department at the Vancouver Film School in British Columbia and Chair of the Moving Image Arts Department at the College of Santa Fe. He was also Director of Garson Studios in Santa Fe. Wacks holds a BA (Hons.) from the University of Essex (UK) and an MFA from the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. He is a member of the Directors Guild of America.
