Cold wave is a loose music genre that emerged in Europe the late 1970s, characterized by its detached lyrical tone, use of early electronic music instruments and a minimalist approach and style. It emerged from punk rock bands who, influenced by early electronic groups such as Kraftwerk, made use of affordable portable synthesizers such as the Korg MS-20.

In 1987, conflicts emerged among the band members as some of them wanted to pursue heavier hardcore while others preferred a more melodic punk. That strife eventually led to Abaddon's split. Most of the members abandoned the music scene except for Tomek Dorn (Perelka). He went on playing for a local cold wave band called Variété.

Black City Lights was an electronic band from Wellington, New Zealand. The band consisted of vocalist Julia Catherine Parr and producer Calum Robb and they were signed to Brooklyn label Stars & Letters Records. The band described themselves as alternatively "dark pop" and "cold wave". In August 2013, the band released their début full-length album Another Life.

Junsele has a subarctic climate with large seasonal and diurnal variations. Summers are short and warm, sometimes very warm during July. Winters are extensive but less severe than in other parts of the world at such a northerly inland latitude. Cold extremes can be severe at times, with an all-time low of during a severe January 1987 cold wave.

The wettest month since continuous records began in 1942 has been August 2014 with , whilst the wettest calendar year has been 1983 with and the driest 1956 with .National Weather Service, Tucson; NOW Data Snowfall is most unusual, with the median being zero and the mean only . With two units of the plant being idled, Luminant halted lignite extraction at nearby Sulphur Springs and Mount Pleasant Mines. It later restarted the units in March 2014 due increased demand for power generation from the 2014 North American cold wave. Luminant made the decision in 2014 that Monticello would rely on coal solely from the Powder River Basin beginning in 2016.

The United States experienced its coldest temperature month since February 1934, although much of the West experienced mild temperatures. Washington and Idaho experienced the second-warmest January recorded in the previous 100 years. The eastern United States experienced a major snowfall that significantly delayed traffic. Over 100 deaths occurred in the United States as a result of the cold wave.

The majority of groves were destroyed by the freezing temperatures that occurred in the successive winters of 1985–1986, in particular by the January 1985 cold wave, the worst since 1899. The financial setbacks, not the first in the grove region's history, were too challenging for many growers. Economically destroyed, many walked away from the land. Others awaited other opportunities.

Both cold waves and heat waves cause deaths, though different groups of people may be susceptible to different weather events. More deaths occur during a cold wave than in a hot wave, though the mortality rate is higher in undeveloped regions of the world. Globally, more people die during hot weather than cold weather. Extreme winter cold often causes poorly insulated water pipelines and mains to freeze.

However, snow may stop spreading of fires, especially wildfires. Winter cold waves that are not considered cold in some areas, but cause temperatures significantly below average for an area, are also destructive. Areas with subtropical climates may recognize unusual cold, perhaps barely freezing, temperatures, as a cold wave. In such places, plant and animal life is less tolerant of such cold as may appear rarely.

Three of these – Ophelia, David and Emma – were named by foreign agencies. Six storms were named by the new co-operation of the meteorological services of France, Spain and Portugal. Two of these – David and Emma – also affected Britain and Ireland significantly. The impact of the deadly winter storm Emma was intensified by the collision with the Beast from the East cold wave (anticyclone Hartmut).

During the January 2019 North American cold wave, ACRM provided emergency services and shelter to help homeless people escape the dangerous cold. Miss America contestants have served dinner at ACRM as part of a public outreach program. In 2015, 52 Contestants at Miss America participated in the Miss America Serves program at the ACRM. In 2017, 51 Miss America contestants served meals and provided assistance to ACRM.

Now-university president Field was charged with further securing $200,000 for endowment, but the 1912 United States cold wave, which wiped out half the California citrus crop and severely damaged the local economy, made this impossible. President Field resigned in 1914. Victor LeRoy Duke, dean and mathematics professor, became the next president. The southern California Baptist community initiated a campaign to raise $50,000 to clear outstanding debt.

Oui Oui were a French pop group formed in 1983. Guitarist-singer Étienne Charry and drummer Michel Gondry met at secondary school in Sèvres in 1978. The repertoire of songs Oui Oui built up was a reaction to what was termed cold wave music in France and the more politicised rock groups of the era. Numerous musicians passed through the group's ranks in the early years.

When the cold wave comes in winter, sometimes there severe cold days. Huazhou has an abundant precipitation and the average annual precipitation is 1890mm. But with an apparent monsoon climate, the rainfall displays an extremely uneven characteristic, mainly focus on summer and autumn. After having tried to show that life is only pain and that ethics is incompatible with reproduction, De Giraud argued for school training for parenthood, adoption and a procreation strike to end the reproduction imposed by patriarchy. In a different register, De Giraud described as a "dandy punk in rupture", published in 2008, a poetic essay on the cold wave entitled "Cold Love, Satanic Sex and Funny Suicide", with a preface written by Jean-Luc De Meyer, singer of Front 242. Through numerous extracts of songs, he reviews several themes of the cold wave movement and the origin of Gothic movement, such as the love of sex and death, the hatred of the family and even the celebration of the end of the world and the human race; all with a humorous and inventive style.

In January and February 2019, over 1,600 inmates were kept with little to no heat and power for a week during the January 2019 North American cold wave. Numerous inmates reported ill health and were seen banging on windows for help. Activists and some New York officials became involved in seeking to improve conditions. The incident started on the weekend of January 26–27 with a power outage.

Michael Lawson of The Skinny thought that the band "straddled the middle ground between melancholic cold wave and regimented synth workouts." Boy Harsher draws heavily from cinema, theatrics and graphic design to tailor the band's visual imagery; Matthews and Muller both have a background in filmmaking.

Snow is a short documentary film made by Geoffrey Jones for British Transport Films in 1962–1963. The 8-minute-long film shows the efforts of British Railways staff in coping with the 1963 United Kingdom cold wave. An example of "pure cinema", it was nominated for an Academy Award in 1965. The film had its origins in primary research for a documentary about the British Railways Board.

Black Marble began in 2012 with the release of an EP on Hardly Art titled Weight Against the Door. Also in 2012, Black Marble released its first full-length album on Hardly Art titled A Different Arrangement. These works were described as "throwbacks to the cold- wave genre" by Leo Neufeld of the Miami New Times. In 2016, Black Marble released its second full-length album, titled It's Immaterial.

However, some water began flowing onto roadways, and with freezing temperatures, caused ice to form on roads in western Dade County. Overall, the cold wave caused up to $2 billion (1977 USD) in damage. Several traffic accidents occurred due to snowfall and ice. Most notably, there was a ten-car pileup in Tampa, and another accident killed a man near Auburndale, when his car skidded in snow and crashed into a truck.

Biohazzard Records is a German Independent record label founded by music journalist Sascha Bahn and Alexander C.H. Lorenz (publisher of "MUMM" compilation) who have more than 20 years of experience in band management. Biohazzard is a sublabel of Danse Macabre Records, especially renowned for the gothic band Das Ich, which focuses on gothic, gothic metal, dark wave, cold wave and electronic music. Its distribution companies are AL!VE and Kontor Media (digital distribution).

The cold wave brought human fatalities, deaths of wild and domesticated animals, crop losses, and infrastructure damage to homes and municipality and industrial sites. At least 126 deaths were blamed on the cold snap. Some 90 percent of the citrus crop in Florida was destroyed in what the state called the "Freeze of the Century." Florida's citrus industry suffered $1.2 billion in losses ($2.68 billion in 2016 dollars) as a result of the inclement weather.

In association with the storm, there were winds exceeding hurricane-force with a wind gust of recorded at Shemya, Alaska. The storm also produced waves as high as , although waves were lesser on the Alaska coast. The storm weakened as it moved westward, and it produced a "ripple" in the jet stream which allowed for a strong cold front to dive southward out of Canada into the United States, producing a cold wave.

By November 10, Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories had been issued across most areas from the northern Rocky Mountains to the Great Lakes. Michigan received snow totals as high as through December 12 from a system associated with the early cold wave. The storm also brought high winds; Snowbasin, Utah even received wind gusts of , and parts of several mountain states and Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma recorded gale-force winds.

Second single Circles was produced by James Ford and accompanied by H.A.L. produced by Andrew Weatherall. The package includes several acclaimed remixes including the Round&Round; Mix by Dubstep pioneer Martyn which is featured on the Fabric 50 compilation. With its Nouveau Minimal Wave and Cold Wave sound Detachments' ensuing eponymous debut album (produced by James Ford) found them an international cult following. The album is steeped with existential undertones and an austere, dystopian outlook.

After that they choose the most interesting fragments and only based on those they build new songs. Although Variété is considered by many as a leading representative of cold wave, in his current remarks Grzegorz Kaźmierczak emphasizes the necessity of departing from that genre as a prerequisite of progress. At the same time Variété is seen by a lot of musicians as a band that shaped their musical and literary awareness, a group that continues to inspire.

To be sure, such is more likely in places like Siberia and much of Canada that customarily get very cold weather. Fires become even more of a hazard during extreme cold. Water mains may break and water supplies may become unreliable, making firefighting more difficult. The air during a cold wave is typically denser and thus contains more oxygen, so when air that a fire draws in becomes unusually cold it is likely to cause a more intense fire.

Hospitals can prepare for the admission of victims of frostbite and hypothermia; schools and other public buildings can be converted into shelters. People can stock up on food, water, and other necessities before a cold wave. Some may even choose to migrate to places of milder climates, at least during the winter. Suitable stocks of forage can be secured before cold waves for livestock, and livestock in vulnerable areas might be shipped from affected areas or even slaughtered.

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration provided a slightly higher estimate of 924 mbar (hPa; 27.29 inHg), a pressure which still holds the record for most intense cyclone in the Bering Sea. The extratropical cyclone crossed the International Date Line on November 9, at which time it started to weaken. However, the system's intensity shifted the jet stream far to the north of Alaska, resulting in a large mass of Arctic air invading the United States along and east of the Rocky Mountains, which caused the worst cold wave the United States had experienced since the Early 2014 North American cold wave.

"Siberian Express" was the nickname coined by a meteorologist to describe the January 17, 1982 cold wave event hitting much of the United States. Also called "Cold Sunday", the event broke many all-time record lows. Paleoclimatologist Jack A. Wolfe published in 1992 about the geographic origin. The frozen Arctic Ocean produced the frigid air for the "Siberian Express", the high-pressure system in Siberia which was southward blocked by the Himalayas and Tibetan Plateau, that transported the air down into North America.

The January 1987 snowfall was a very heavy lake-effect type snow event that affected the United Kingdom, mainly the areas of East Anglia, South-East England and London between 11 and 14 January and was the heaviest snowfall to fall in that part of the United Kingdom since the winter of 1981/82. Over of snow fell in South East England, with some locations reporting snowfall at . Ireland was also affected by the cold wave, reporting more than in some areas.

The associated cold wave brought the coldest air recorded over portions of the eastern Great Lakes in decades on February 15, and possibly over the entire forecast record. In some places, such as Siberia, extreme cold requires that fuel-powered machinery to be used even part-time must be run continuously. Internal plumbing can be wrapped, and persons can often run water continuously through pipes. Energy conservation, difficult as it is in a cold wave, may require such measures as collecting people (especially the poor and elderly) in communal shelters. Even the homeless may be arrested and taken to shelters, only to be released when the hazard abates.

Indian cold wave during the winter months of 2012 killed at least 92 people across northern and eastern India. The drop in temperature had a devastating effect on the hundreds of thousands of homeless people in India. Most of the dead were homeless and elderly people, living in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Other northern and eastern states such as Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, New Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Tripura were also affected by this cold snap.

The cold wave had an impact on New Year's Eve celebrations in the affected regions; some Canadian cities chose to scale back their ancillary outdoor festivities (but still scheduling celebrations at midnight), including Calgary (which forecast a high of ), Ottawa (overnight low of ), and Toronto (, after wind chill), although the CBC reported that Montreal and Winnipeg decided to go on without any changes. New Year's Eve celebrations at New York City's Times Square were the second-coldest on record, at ( after wind chill).

The average January high is 38; the average January low is 22 °F, but it is not unusual for winter temperatures to be much lower or higher than the averages. The all- time record low (not including wind chill) was −21 °F during a widespread cold wave in January 1994. Snow is common in some winters, but the harsher winter conditions experienced to the north and west are not typical of Greater Reading. Annual snowfall is variable, but averages around 32 inches.

The Carolina Hurricanes-Buffalo Sabres game originally scheduled for January 7 was postponed due to the 2014 North American cold wave. It was rescheduled for February 25. During the cold wave, the strain on the power supply left 1,200 customers in Nashville without power, along with around 7,500 customers in Blount County. The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency declared a state of emergency. Twenty-four thousand residents lost power in Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri.

Because of temperatures being at or just above freezing, pockets of wet snow broke out in central New Jersey, with only accumulations on grassy surfaces, but areas further to the south picked up to . The system moved offshore late by April 9, but brought some more cold temperatures behind it, setting more record lows. The cold wave finally lifted out of the Northeastern United States by April 12, due to an imminent pattern change that would allow warm air to surge back into the region.

One example of El Paso's varying climate at its most extreme was the damaging winter storm of early February 2011, which caused closures of schools, businesses, and City Hall. The snow, which was light, stopped after about a day, but during the ensuing cold episode, municipal utilities went into a crisis. The high temperature on February 2, 2011, was , the lowest daily maximum on record. In addition, the low temperature on February 3 was , breaking the monthly record low set during the cold wave of 1899.

On November 13, Portland, Oregon recorded accumulation of ice. Other areas in the state recorded additional ice accumulations and one area recorded of snow. By state, maximum snow totals as high as were recorded near Ouray, Colorado, with six other states reporting totals of at least .

The low pressure areas brought heavy rainfalls which led to flooding, which became most severe over parts of England such as at the Somerset Levels. The repeated storms fit into a pattern of disturbed weather in the Northern Hemisphere, which saw from November 2013 a disturbance to the jet stream in the western Pacific, which propagated eastwards bringing a warm winter to Alaska, drought to California, and repeated cold air outbreaks to the eastern USA where the early 2014 North American cold wave resulted.

The two LSIs, in company with five destroyers, entered the Vestfjorden before 04:00 on 4 March, and launched their attack. The morning weather was clear, cold, and calm, and the landing craft approached all four landing points more or less simultaneously in broad daylight (sunrise was approximately 06:20). Overall, the mean low temperature in the city during the month of January was , well below the average of . In Tennessee, the Public Service Commission estimating that approximately 100,000 people would be forced to miss a day of work due to closures, while nearly 2,000 people in southern West Virginia were left without heat as a result of interruption of natural gas service.

The footage was shot in 1990 in preparation for the music video, but their record label, Lively Arts, and its parent, New Rose Records, folded before the video was completed. The band recovered the footage and released it on YouTube, 24 years after the project was started. In February 2014, Museum of Devotion released the "Another Cold Wave" EP which is a return to their darkwave roots. Along with the release of the new EP, Museum of Devotion reissued and remastered their first two albums, "...to the Pink Period" and "Wants Versus Needs".

In late January 2016, a cold wave struck much of East Asia, parts of mainland Southeast Asia and parts of northern South Asia, bringing record cold temperatures and snowfall to many regions. Sleet was reported in Okinawa for the first time on record, and many other regions saw their coldest temperatures in decades. The IFRC's Disaster Relief Emergency Fund donated 57,100 Swiss francs to support the Indian Red Cross Society in delivering immediate assistance to about 10,000 people. In Uttar Pradesh and Bihar the cold wave dropped the mercury to as low as which forced closure of all schools up to grade 13 until January 12.

A cold wave was ongoing across the northern Plains when this low developed, with temperatures close to near the central Canada–US border. A surface low developed north of Texas on January 6, dropping southeast to the lower Texas coast early on January 7. The cyclone tracked inland of the coast through the Deep South later on January 7 and early January 8, before turning northeast through Georgia and emerging offshore the Virginia Capes late on January 8. The system reached its maximum intensity as it moved near New Jersey late on January 8.

Ypsilanti Daily Press The cold wave began in November 1911 when the Great Blue Norther dropped temperatures abruptly. It was the coldest November on record in the contiguous U.S., with an average temperature of , while December was relatively mild. January 1912 was the seventh-coldest January on record in the contiguous U.S. The states of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota had their coldest Januaries on record. Minneapolis/Saint Paul endured a record-setting 186 consecutive hours of below temperatures, from 8 pm on December 31 until 1 pm on January 8.

Several winter weather events accompanied the cold wave, the most significant one was a powerful blizzard that impacted the Northeastern U.S. in the first few days of 2018. Some of these events impacted areas that normally do not receive snow, such as Louisiana and Texas. In an extremely rare event, Tallahassee, Florida in extreme north Florida received trace amounts of frozen precipitation for the first time in more than 30 years. In addition, many places broke records for coldest temperatures in the final week of 2017 and the first part of 2018.

Isgaard Marke (born 1972 in Husum, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany) is a classically trained singer, who is also involved with the project Classic meets Pop. Her style resembles influences of the Kate Bush school as well as cold wave influences and modern ambient sounds. Her greatest hits were "Ein schöner Tag" and "Dream of You" with the dance project Schiller, in which she sang single, short lyrical lines. In 2003, she participated in the German pre- selection for the Eurovision Song Contest and reached seventh place with the song "Golden Key".

Relatively less extreme temperatures would follow during the second half of the month, until the final days of January saw another cold snap after some heavy snowfall on January 27–28. During the final three days of the month low temperatures fell below in most areas far south in the country. Linköping recorded , which was the coldest temperature recorded on this location since the record-breaking 1942 cold wave. The end result of January was that capital Stockholm that is inside an urban heat island did not record a single temperature above all month.

Although no February precipitation records were broken, an unusual amount of what fell came as snow in the southerly part of the country, where winter highs normally are above freezing. The frequent snowfall caused havoc for rail transport, with severe delays and cancellations of many lines. The night of February 22 was among the coldest of the entire cold wave, with Stockholm recording inside the urban heat island and being measured in Örebro. February 24 saw the coldest temperature of the winter being recorded in Naimakka in the far north with .

"Cold wave" is a loose descriptor, derived from "new wave", that was originally reserved for a collection of punk and electronic styles from the 1970s. The scope of the genre has evolved continuously throughout its history. Writing in his 2018 book Popmusik in Zeiten der Digitalisierung, Robert Selfert notes that the term is "controversial" among dedicated fans who debate its definition and epoch in relation to numerous alternative terms. The SAGE Handbook of Popular Music (2014) offers that the term is an early synonym for what was later termed "dark wave", "goth", and "deathrock".

The floods hit during a typically dry season, and were triggered when a record cold wave moved south from East Asia and produced persistent flooding in combination with near-normal sea surface temperatures, still warm enough to support strong convectional precipitation. However, Thailand's Deputy Chief Negotiator for the UNFCCC stated that the floods were likely caused by climate change, as over of rain had fallen in parts of Southern Thailand for the four months leading up to the beginning of April while the year of 2010 saw a total of .

To help secure food security, India (the source of more than 10% of world rice trade) stopped all non-Basmati exports in October 2007, lifting the ban temporarily, then re-applying it in April 2008. and some retailers began rationing sales, due to fears of insufficient global supplies of the grain. Vietnam, fearing shortages due to a cold wave on the Red River Delta in mid-January 2008, banned sales to international rice traders. Both of these cases caused a steady increase in prices during the first months of 2008.

The official Met Office data series goes back to 1959 and shows that there only have been a few warm and no hot summers in Glasgow, in stark contrast to areas further south in Great Britain and eastwards in Europe. The warmest month on record in the data series is July 2006, with an average high of and low of . Even this extreme event only matched a normal summer on similar parallels in continental Europe, underlining the maritime influences. The coldest month on record since the data series began is December 2010, during a severe cold wave affecting the British Isles.

Exposure to cold mandates greater caloric intake for all animals, including humans, and if a cold wave is accompanied by heavy and persistent snow, grazing animals may be unable to reach necessary food and water, and die of hypothermia or starvation. Cold waves often necessitate the purchase of fodder for livestock at considerable cost to farmers. Human populations can be inflicted with frostbites when exposed for extended periods of time to cold and may result in the loss of limbs or damage to internal organs. Extreme winter cold often causes poorly insulated water pipes to freeze.

The 2014 North American cold wave was an extreme weather event that extended through the late winter months of the 2013–2014 winter season, and was also part of an unusually cold winter affecting parts of Canada and parts of the north-central and upper eastern United States. The event occurred in early 2014 and was caused by a southward shift of the North Polar Vortex. Record-low temperatures also extended well into March. On January 2, an Arctic cold front initially associated with a nor'easter tracked across Canada and the United States, resulting in heavy snowfall.

The 2017–18 North American winter refers to winter in North America as it occurred across the continent from late 2017 through early 2018. Similar to the previous winter, a La Niña was expected to influence the winter weather across North America. Winter weather patterns were very active, erratic, and protracted, especially near the end of the season. Significant events included rare snowfall in the South, a strong cold wave that affected the United States during the early weeks of January, and a series of strong nor'easters that affected the Northeastern U.S during the month of March.

It is also the driest major city with only of precipitation annually, especially thanks to the Mistral, a cold, dry wind originating in the Rhône Valley that occurs mostly in winter and spring and which generally brings clear skies and sunny weather to the region. Less frequent is the Sirocco, a hot, sand-bearing wind, coming from the Sahara Desert. Snowfalls are infrequent; over 50% of years do not experience a single snowfall. The hottest temperature was on 26 July 1983 during a great heat wave, the lowest temperature was on 13 February 1929 during a strong cold wave.

Havre experiences a semi-arid climate (Köppen BSk) with long, cold, dry winters and hot summers with cool nights. Winter weather can vary greatly from brutal cold when Arctic air moves in from Canada, to temperatures far above due to chinook windsfor instance the coldest month (and only one to never top freezing) of January 1916 averaged and February 1936 during a notorious cold wave , but February 1954 averaged as high as and January 1919, .National Weather Service, Great Falls The hottest temperature recorded in Havre is on August 5, 1961, and the coldest on January 27, 1916.

In the previous postseason, 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick shredded the Packers for 444 total yards of offense, including 181 rushing yards. This time, they managed to contain him a little better, but the final result was still the same: a Green Bay loss. Kaepernick racked up 325 offensive yards, and with five minutes left, he led the team on a 65-yard drive to set up Phil Dawson's game-winning field goal. Due to the 2014 North American cold wave, the game was initially expected to be one of the coldest playoff games in NFL history.

At Montgomery, in the central region, the average annual temperature is , with a winter average of , and a summer average of . The average winter minimum for the entire state is , and there is an average of 35 days in each year in which the thermometer falls below the freezing-point. At extremely rare intervals the thermometer has fallen below zero (-18 °C), as was the case in the remarkable cold wave of the 12th-13 February 1899, when an absolute minimum of was registered at Valley Head. The highest temperature ever recorded was in Talladega county in 1902.

Two small boats are also visible held against the overspill weir, having been washed against it during a particularly high discharge as a result of meltwater from the 2018 winter cold wave. Weirs are commonly used to control the flow rates of rivers during periods of high discharge. Sluice gates (or in some cases the height of the weir crest) can be altered to increase or decrease the volume of water flowing downstream.

It is one of Eastern Europe's largest airports with over 6 million passengers traveling in 2008.6 millionth passenger It consistently accounted for between 60% and 70% of Ukraine's air travel demand and, despite a drop of 13% in 2009, it handled 5.8 million passengers, more than it handled in 2007. Farther north in the world, only the Faroe Islands have such high January averages as Lerwick and fellow Shetland station at Baltasound – with the warm Atlantic currents preventing ice formation. Only when temperatures in continental areas are record cold does Lerwick experience some cold as was the case in December 2010 during the severe cold wave affecting the British Isles and Europe that covered much of England in snow. Even so, average highs remained above and frosts were light. Even warm summers are also extremely rare with the warmest recorded month being July 2006 at an average high of .

In early November, a cyclone in the Bering Sea entered Alaska, generating a ripple in the jet stream. The coincident presence of high pressure over the western United States and low pressure over the southern and central United States enabled very cold air in Canada to travel southward. Denver, Colorado experienced a record low temperature for November 13 when temperatures dropped to , breaking the previous record of set in 1916, and Freeze Watches and Freeze Warnings were issued across the Deep South by the National Weather Service. The cold wave was accompanied by multiple snow events as well.

A wintry mix and freezing rain was the majority of the precipitation in southwestern New England; however, areas to the south received rain. The storm system then gradually moved out into Canada by January 4. While bringing a wide swath of wintry weather from coast to coast, the winter storm also brought along with it a cold wave, in which some places broke record low temperatures. On January 1, 2015, Los Angeles experienced a record low of , a temperature matched in Pasadena, where the Tournament of Roses Parade was not the coldest in history as forecasters had expected.

On 11 January, the cold wave reached Albania, with temperatures reaching and supplies being flown in by army helicopters, mainly in the city of Gjirokastër and the nation's capital Tirana. On 16 January, it was reported that the electricity prices in Europe were at their highest since 2008 as a result of power outages and increased demand. Romanian Energy Minister, Toma Petcu, suggested that, if coal consumption remained high, reserves held by the country's two major producers would only last for four days. Work that Goddard participated in at, what was then, the Rockefeller Institute, inspired by Leonor Michaelis, in the early 1930s, led indirectly to the discovery of simple methods of permanently modifying the shape of hair by reducing the disulfide bonds in keratin (hair protein). The basic chemistry of this discovery was adapted into the technology known in the hairdressing industry as a cold wave, using chemical derivatives of the reagent, thioglycolic acid, that he identified as suitable for this purpose. Goddard was only interested in the, considerable, scientific implications of this discovery, and refused any suggestion of attempting to patent the process.

Hopper Research of Boston observed that searches for flights to Cancun, Mexico increased by about half in northern cities. New England spot natural gas prices hit record levels from January 1 to February 18, with the day-ahead wholesale (spot) natural gas price at the Algonquin Citygate hub serving Boston averaging US, a record high for these dates since the Intercontinental Exchange data series began in 2001. Over a dozen deaths were attributed to the cold wave, with dangerous roadway conditions and extreme cold cited as causes. At least 3,600 flights were cancelled on January 6, and several thousand were cancelled over the preceding weekend.

Following the passing of the cold front, the anticyclone to the south began to break down, allowing the colder Arctic air to move in over the British Isles from the north and precipitating the start of the severe cold wave at the start of December. The CET Central England Station recorded a daily mean temperature of and a daily minimum temperature of , for December, the coldest December recorded in the 20th Century. The CET Central England Station also recorded its coldest minimum December temperature at on the 13th. The coldest temperature recorded in December was recorded in Shawbury, Shropshire on the 13th, and is the coldest December temperature recorded in England.

The cold wave of January 1977 produced the only known trace of snow in the greater Miami area of Florida ever reported, although the city itself did not report any snow (a trace of snow was documented in Lake Worth). It occurred following the passage of a strong cold front, in combination with a high- pressure area situated over the Mississippi River Valley. As a result, cold air moved far to the south across Florida, causing both snow flurries and record low temperatures. Most notably, the weather system brought snow flurries (seen in the air, but not on the ground) as far south as Homestead on January 19\.

Only minor damage was reported on the island which houses a United States Air Force installation. The northward movement of the cyclone altered the jet stream, which allowed a fragment of the polar vortex to descend from Arctic region into lower Canada and the Eastern United States, affecting up to 200 million people with colder-than-normal temperatures and early snowstorms. Some U.S. locations had temperatures 45 °F (25 °C) below normal.

Most of the precipitation associated with this system was snowfall, due to an ongoing cold wave, which due to this made forecasting very easy. As the new low continued to move northwards, winds began to pick up along the coast, which at times led to blizzard conditions. The system also started to rapidly deepen as it started to pull away from the Northeast, dropping from at 15:00 UTC January 21, to at 15:00 UTC January 22, a drop of in 24 hours. Snow from the system continued to linger into January 22–23 even as it continued to pull away from the New England coast.

A weaker cold wave occurs when the South Pacific High remains over the ocean and does not have a migratory high pressure system originating from the South Pacific High that moves east of the Andes (it builds over the Andes). Although this occurs throughout the year, during winters, it leads to cold temperatures while during summer, it leads to strong and deep convections. These convections are responsible for about 50% of summer precipitation south of 25oS. The Chaco Low is a semi–permanent low pressure system situated east of the Andes that is approximately located between 20oS and 30oS during summer (displaced to the north in winter).

A number of brands of home permanent kits were available since the invention of the 'cold wave' in the 1940s, but their numbers have decreased as permanent waves are not as popular as they were in the 1980s. The first popular home permanent was the TONI brand, manufactured in Forest Lake, Minnesota. The Toni company used a set of twins to advertise their products; one with a salon perm and one with the home perm. They introduced a number of types and brands over the next four decades (Silkwave, UnCurly, Tonette, Silver Curl, Prom, Scatter Perm, Lightwaves, Epic Waves) and a formula to remove curl: Curl-Free™.

Wierd Records is credited with establishing interest in the style in the US, while The Liberty Snake Club did much to popularize it within the UK. The Tigersushi Records compilation So Young but So Cold, compiled by Ivan Smagghe, is one document of the scene. Crack journalist Tom Watson referenced Angular Recordings' Cold Waves and Minimal Electronics (2010) as a "crucial" compilation. Wierd Records' weekly Wednesday night party in New York was described by The Guardian journalist Louis Pattinson as the locus of the cold wave and minimal synth revival of the early 2000s. Artists who performed at these parties included Blacklist, Xeno & Oaklander and Led Er Est.

Kim Yi-seol seems to consider that a blood relation does nothing but imprisoning each other, and is mutually meaningless outside of that. In “Bugo” (부고 The Obituary), the protagonist experiences a downward spiral situation, in which she constantly falls through: divorced parents, rape, death of her mother, parting from a lover, and abortion. The one who consoles is neither her father nor her big brother, but her stepmother, who has similar scars. In “Hanpa Tteukbo” (한파 특보 A Cold Wave Warning), the protagonist's father constantly throws out verbal abuse for the sole reason of his pride for having worked for the family all his life.

After Ukraine gained independence in 1991, "Kyiv" airport began receiving international flights from nearby countries (first from its former Soviet "domestic" destinations), increasingly so since the 2000s when Ukraine's civil aviation started booming. On 27 March 2011, Wizz Air, the locally-pioneering low cost airline, moved all its operations to "Zhuliany" from the Boryspil Airport, – starting the new era of around-the-clock flights at the airport and increasing the passenger traffic by 15 to 20%. In 2012, the airport managed to survive the European cold wave without major flight delays or cancellations. Surrounded by major railways, highways and residential districts, the airport has limited possibilities to expand its runway.

2018 Great Britain and Ireland cold wave The Regent's Park Men's 1st boat bumped on the first and only day of lower division racing, meaning they bumped on every day of racing, and were technically eligible for blades, although these were not claimed by the crew or recognised by the college.Bumps race#Organisation After a sustained period of success, both the Men's and Women's boats are in historically high positions: the Men are at their highest position since 1982 in Torpids and their highest ever position in Summer Eights, while the Women's winning of Trophy Blades in the 2019 Summer Eights propelled them to their highest position since 2000.

However, the jet stream that created the 2014 North American cold wave has been linked to global warming, and resultant cold fronts have been linked to salt water intrusion in Louisiana's Atchafalaya Bay. However, one of Louisiana's most famous animals, the alligator, has proved versatile in adapting to cold weather conditions by burrowing in "alligator holes", which they usually use for waiting out a drought. Studies conducted in Finland and Sweden suggest that snow creates more potential problems in urban communities due to increased pollution in runoff. Due to the state's lack of resources and funding, however, it is unclear what levels of pollution due to snow affect the Louisiana area.

Like most normal cold waves, the cold wave was caused by the southwards movement of the polar vortex into the United States due to changes in the jet stream in early February 2015. However, unlike most which last for a few days, this one remained for much of the entire month. This was partly due to the Ridiculously Resilient Ridge, which persisted over parts of Alaska for much of the month, essentially keeping the jet stream pattern "locked" for several weeks. This allowed for bitterly cold air masses to migrate southwards into the eastern part of the country, leading to well-below average temperatures.

Cabine C (, Portuguese for "Cabin C") was a short-lived Brazilian post-punk band from São Paulo. With their sonority inspired by acts such as Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, Cocteau Twins and Talking Heads, and vocalist Ciro Pessoa's lyrics influenced by Romantic and Symbolist poets such as Edgar Allan Poe, Charles Baudelaire and Arthur Rimbaud, and by playwright Antonin Artaud, they are considered to be one of the first and most famous Brazilian gothic rock bands (even though Pessoa publicly rejected any associations with the goth subculture at the time), as well as forerunners of the cold wave movement in Brazil. Despite their short lifespan, they have a strong cult following to the present day.

Closterkeller came to life in January of 1988, founded by Przemysław Guryn (keyboards), Jacek Skirucha (guitar), Tomasz Grochowalski (bass) and Anja Orthodox (vocals). They were soon joined by Piotr "Peterek" Bieńkowski on drums, known from bands Madame and Maanam. That is when Closterkeller won their first festival, Ochota '88 and began working on their first, strongly cold wave - and gothic rock - influenced studio album, Purple. In 1989 Closterkeller was already gaining a lot of attention and has grown in popularity by winning the biggest Polish rock festivals: "Mokotowska Jesień", "Rock Pokoju" at Hala Gwardii in Warsaw, "Rock Pod Chełmcem", "Odjazdy" and "Jarocin" - the most prestigious Polish festival in the 80s and 90s.

The cold wave in the United States was influenced by a low-pressure area called a "Clipper" which brought an Arctic cold front that caused rapidly falling temperatures and strong northwest winds with gusts of . In Salt Lake City January, 2013 with the average temperature of became the coldest month on record since 1949 and the sixth-coldest January since 1874. On March 5 a record 6-inch snow depth was noted in Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, exceeding the previous 1999 record for that date by 2.2 inches. On the same day 900 flights were cancelled in O'Hare Airport, while Midway Airport reportedly cancelled 240 flights. U.S. Airways reported 350 flight cancellations for March 6.

Temperatures outside of monsoonal storms are very hot during the summer: 94.8 days exceed and temperatures as high as occurred on June 22, 1981 and July 8 of 1951. During the winter, days are very mild and sunny, but nights are cold, with reached on 73.6 mornings during an average winter, although only seven mornings have ever fallen to or below ,National Weather Service El Paso; NOW Data with the coldest temperature recorded at Alamogordo being during a major cold wave on January 11, 1962. Snow is very rare, with a mean of no more than and a median very close to zero. The most snowfall in one month was in December 1960.

However he also implied that the song is deceptively simple, and that "there are layers of sonics beneath the smooth surface". He says that ABBA's "mastery of this Cold Wave keyboard sound" could have seen the band "seamlessly ma[k]e the transition into the [1980s]", using The Day Before You Came as a template for the new sound. He concludes the analysis with: "the song is the ultimate tease, a door left ajar, a murder mystery with its final page torn out...which arguably makes it all the more wonderful". On 5 December 2010 on British TV for ITV1 a poll was made where fans could vote for "The Nation's Favourite ABBA song".

The January 31 – February 2, 2015 North American blizzard was a major winter storm that plowed through the majority of the United States, dumping as much as of new snowfall across a path from Iowa to New England, as well as blizzard conditions in early February 2015. It came less than a week after another crippling blizzard which impacted the Northeast with 2–3 feet of snow. It was the first of many intense winter storms to occur in the nation during the month of February, partly in due to an ongoing cold wave that was beginning to take shape shortly after the storm subsided. Ahead of the storm, residents mainly in the Midwest prepared for potential whiteout or even blizzard conditions.

Blocked from its normal movement, polar air from the north pushed into nearly every section of the central and eastern half of the United States and Canada, shattering record lows in a number of areas. The event was preceded by unusually warm weather in the eastern U.S. in December 1984, suggesting that there was a build-up of cold air that was suddenly released from the Arctic, a meteorological event known as a mobile polar high, a weather process identified by Professor Marcel Leroux.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , of which is land and is water. Like all of North Dakota, Devils Lake has a humid continental climate (Köppen Dfb) with very cold winters with frequent light snowfall, and warm to very warm, wetter summers with most rain from convective thunderstorms. During the 1936 North American cold wave, the town was one of the coldest places south of the Canada–US border, averaging for the five weeks ending February 21, 1936Kincer, J.B.; ‘Weather Cycle Changing: Present Hard Winter May Be a Foretaste of a Series of Colder and Wetter Years’; The New York Times, February 21, 1936, p. E10 (though at a different site from that now in use).

Much of the year's of rainfall occurs during this period. Extreme temperatures range from 27 F on February 3, 1917, to 100 °F on July 21, 1942, (−2.8 to 38 °C), the only triple-digit (°F) reading on record; the more recent freezing temperature seen at Miami International Airport was on December 25, 1989. The highest daily minimum temperature is on August 4, 1993 and September 7, 1897 (although the corresponding record for Miami Beach is on July 17, 2001), and conversely, the lowest daily maximum temperature is on February 19, 1900. While Miami has never officially recorded any accumulating snowfall since records have been kept, there were non-accumulating snow flurries on January 19, 1977 during the cold wave of January 1977.

When the second cold wave emerged, schools were also closed on January 27 and 28. In Michigan, the mayor of Lansing, Virg Bernero, issued a snow emergency prohibiting all non-essential travel as well as closing down non-essential government offices. In Indiana, more than fifty of the state's ninety-two counties, including virtually everywhere north of Indianapolis, closed all roads to all traffic except emergency vehicles. In Ohio, schools across the entire state were closed on January 6 and 7, including the state's largest two school districts, Columbus City Schools and Cleveland Metropolitan School District. The Ohio State University completely shut down on January 6 and 7, delaying the start of the spring semester by two days for the first closure on two consecutive days in 36 years.

AA truck covered in snow During the cold wave, more than of snow fell in parts of Kent, Essex, London and Surrey, and the North Downs reported more than Parts of West Cornwall also had heavy falls. Several towns were cut off due to the heavy snowfall including the Isle of Sheppey which needed airlifts during the height of the storm. This was due to a high pressure system over Siberia that moved into Scandinavia which in turn dragged a strong easterly airflow and brought very cold temperatures across Europe and the United Kingdom. A low pressure system over Italy caused the airflow to drag the very cold air from Siberia to Western Europe and picked up further moisture from the North Sea which produced the heavy snowfall.

Leucothea by Jean Jules Allasseur (1862) In Homer's Odyssey, the sea goddess Leucothea ( "white goddess"), appears "in the likeness of a Gannet" and tells the shipwrecked Odysseus to discard his cloak and raft, instead offering him her veil to wind round himself which will save his life and enable him to reach land. Another early reference to the gannet is in the 7th-century Old English epic poem The Seafarer. > There I heard naught but seething sea, > Ice-cold wave, awhile a song of swan > Then came to charm me gannets' pother > And whimbrels trills for laughter of men, > Kittiwake singing instead of mead. > An old myth from Mykines in the Faroe Islands tells of the giant Tórur seeking mercy following defeat at the hands of Óli, the islanders' head man and magician.

In late January 2019, a severe cold wave caused by a weakened jet stream around the Arctic polar vortex hit the Midwestern United States and Eastern Canada, killing at least 22 people. It came after a winter storm brought up to of snow in some regions from January 27–29, and brought the coldest temperatures in over 20 years to most locations in the affected region, including some all-time record lows. In early February, a concentration of Arctic air colloquially referred to as the "polar vortex" moved west,Edmonton feels the cold as polar vortex makes its way west Edmonton Journal, February 2, 2019 and became locked over Western Canada and the Western United States. As a result, February 2019 was among the coldest and snowiest on record in these regions.

The new musical orientation was presented to the wider audience on the second synth-laden studio album "Izleti" ("Excursions"), featuring songs "Pobuna bubuljica" ("Acne Uprising"), "Nestašni đački izleti" ("Naughty School Excursions"), "Javna kupatila" ("Public Bathrooms") and "Federico u bačvi" ("Federico in a Barrel"), the latter being inspired by the Federico Fellini film Casanova. The album also featured their classic cold-wave single "Tužne uši" ("Sad ears") with the memorable chant "Ležim na leđima i plačem a suze mi teku u uši" ("I am lying on my back crying and tears are flowing down into my ears"). Guitarist Vičić left the band after a series of promotional concerts and was replaced by a former Termiti (Termites) member Robert Tičić. The new lineup started working on the third studio album.

AllMusic gave Divide by Zero a mixed to negative marker of two and a half out of five stars. Aiding & Abetting gave the album a positive review, saying "Killing Floor uses everything to its advantage: riffage, throbbing rhythms, shouted vocals and a wonderful touch in the studio." and "seamless sound is good, as before, and the songs are able to merge the lyric and musical ideas much better than on the debut." Larry Miles of Black Monday called the album typical of the industrial genre, "aggressive, guitar driven and apocalyptic", while highlighting the band for "mixing an aggressive message with bone crushing punk tendencies." Fabryka Music Magazine gave the album four out of four and praised the mysterious cold wave atmosphere in compositions such as "Unity" as being the highlight of the album.

Wisdom, owing to its high altitude and northerly location, has a subalpine climate (Köppen Dfc) with long, cold, dry winters and short summers with very warm afternoons and cold, clear mornings. With over 277 mornings each year below freezing and only July ever completely frost-free, Wisdom is in terms of frequency of frost one of the coldest places in the United States. During major cold waves, Wisdom’s location in an enclosed valley can make for exceptionally cold temperatures: was reached during a great cold wave on December 23, 1983, and has been reached during seven years, though not since February 4, 1989. Typically there are 47 mornings falling to or below , and as many as seven fall as low as , whilst 69.8 afternoons do not top freezing, a tally twice as large as central Montana areas affected by warm chinook winds.

So much had been expected of the Wallaby side and following the tour many reasons were offered up to explain the disappointing result of one international won from the four played. It was said that Paul McLean's kicking was not up to his usual standard; that the scrum lacked size and power; that Tony Shaw showed his pique in felling Cuthbertson and that the loss of Hipwell was a blow. Regardless of the reasons some bad luck was evident in the cancellation of the Barbarian clash due to heavy snow caused by the 1981-82 United Kingdom cold wave and perhaps symptomatic of much ill-luck on the tour. The journalist David Lord, who travelled with the squad, wrote venomously of a Queensland-New South Wales player rift in the team which if even half-true must have affected team morale.

Between 2005-2010, the Men's VIII established a record of thirty-four consecutive starts in a bumps race without being bumped once itself. The Men's VIII has currently gone sixteen days of racing, or four years, without being bumped in the Summer Eights competition (as well as nine days in Torpids), the third- best record of crews currently on the water. Double blades (blades in Torpids and Eights in the same year) have been achieved three times in Boat Club history - by the Men's crews of 1979 and 2006, and the Women's crews of 2015 and 2016. Torpids 2018 coincided with the "Beast from the East" (officially Anticyclone Hartmut, a cold wave in February 2018), and so while full racing took place on the first day of the regatta, racing for lower divisions was called off for the remaining three days.

Dotted with quotes to the sacred vocal music and situationist sounds, its atmospheres revisit different eras and inclinations of the band : cold wave (Presqu'Imparfait du Suggestif), Folk (Circonstancielle Défiance) or pop (Ad nauseam, Infini sidéral ...) In 2015, Opéra Multi Steel pays tribute to the French singer Étienne Daho on the Pistes Noires compilation issued on the Boredom Product French label. The band takes up in its own style the song Bleu comme toi. Once again solicited by Boredom Product, the band takes over Martin Dupont's Inside Out on the Broken Memory compilation, a tribute to this French cult band from the eighties. Réminiscences, released at the end of 2017, is a collection of eight Opera Multi Steel "standards" taken from various albums and revisited by the members of the band in a more punchy perspective than the original versions.

Like most normal cold waves, the cold wave was caused by the southwards movement of the polar vortex into the United States due to changes in the jet stream in late December 2017. Because of an "omega" block pattern that set up around Christmas time – a shift to a pattern with a ridge settling over the western continental U.S and a trough in the central- to eastern parts of the U.S, below-average temperatures occurred through much of the Lower 48 for the final week of 2017 – leading to many records being broken. The pattern continued into the first week of 2018, with more record lows being set following a significant blizzard that impacted the Northeastern United States in early January. By January 11, warmer temperatures had surged northeastwards, although following a winter storm a few days later, cold temperatures returned to the Northeast.

As with most major winter storms in the American South, a low-pressure system formed near the western Gulf of Mexico, in this case, over Mexico on January 27, and eventually moved eastward. The breakdown of the normal polar vortex around the North Pole allowed an outbreak of frigid Arctic air to penetrate well into the South. The cold wave traveled much further south than normal, such that when the precipitation arrived from the Gulf Coast winter storm, freezing temperatures were occurring all of the way down to the coast. Despite the unusually far southward incursion of cold air, the storm took a somewhat more northward track than initially expected, much to the relief of some areas that were spared, and much to the surprise of others further north that had not paid attention to later changes in weather forecasts and corresponding winter storm warnings.

The winter of 1981–82 in the United Kingdom (also called The Big Snow of 1982 by the press) was a severe cold wave that was formed in early December 1981 and lasted until mid-late January in 1982, and was one of the coldest Decembers recorded in the United Kingdom. At the end of November 1981, a strong high-pressure anticyclone over southern England was keeping temperatures around the average for the time of year. Numerous strong low- pressure extratropical cyclones passing to the north of Scotland dragged cold upper-level air down from the Arctic, but the anticyclone to the south of the United Kingdom deflected the coldest air away from the British Isles. On 23 November 1981, a cold front crossing the United Kingdom, fuelled by humid subtropical air from the south colliding with this colder Arctic air from the north, spawned 104 tornadoes as part of a record-breaking nationwide tornado outbreak.

Northerly and north-westerly winds can cause the effect to occur over the Irish Sea and Bristol Channel feeding snow into south-west England and Eastern Ireland. Western Scotland and the Northern Ireland can also see snow showers from a north or north-westerly wind over the Atlantic. Since the North Sea is relatively warm (around at the beginning of winter, typically by the end), sufficiently cold air aloft can create significant snowfalls in a relatively short period of time. The best-known example occurred in January 1987, when record-breaking cold air (associated with an upper low) moved across the North Sea towards the UK. The end result was over two foot of snow for coastal areas, leading to communities being cut off for over a week. The latest of these events to affect Britain's east coast occurred on November 30, 2017, February 28, 2018 and 17 March 2018 in connection with the 2018 Great Britain and Ireland cold wave.

Yangmingshan, the Matsu Islands, and Kinmen all observed their coldest temperatures on record at , , and , respectively. Due to the subtropical climate, many homes do not have central heating or insulation, and residents struggled to cope with the temperatures. Overall, at least 85 people died from hypothermia and cardiac arrest in Taiwan, including 66 people in Taipei and Taoyuan, and another 16 in Kaohsiung.

The 2018–19 North American winter refers to winter in North America as it occurred across the continent from late 2018 through early 2019. Notable events have included a rare snow in the Southeast in December, a strong cold wave and several major winter storms in the Midwest, and upper Northeast and much of Canada late January and early February, record snowstorms in the Southwest late February, two nor'easters that affected the east coast early March, deadly tornado outbreaks in the Southeast, collapsing buildings in Quebec, a historic mid-April blizzard in the Midwest, but the most notable event all season was a record-breaking bomb cyclone that affected much of central USA and Canada in mid March. Unlike previous winters, a developing El Niño was expected to influence weather patterns across North America. Overall, however, winter of 2018 - 2019 was mild along the mid and lower East Coast, West Coast, and most of the southern Plains.

Nikolayev is on the lower left.A cold wave in the first week of January, 1944 firmed up the ground enough for the 4th and 3rd Ukrainian Fronts to begin moving against the remaining German positions in the Dniepr bend. 3rd Ukrainian began its assault on January 10, but this had largely failed by the 13th. On the same day the 4th Ukrainian attacked the bridgehead but made minimal gains before both Fronts called a halt on January 16. The offensive was renewed on January 30 against a bridgehead weakened by transfers and 4th Ukrainian drove a deep wedge into its south end. On February 4 the German 6th Army ordered the bridgehead to be evacuated.Ziemke, Stalingrad to Berlin, pp. 240-42 On February 13 the 50th Guards was awarded its first Order of the Red Banner for its part in the battle for the Nikopol bridgehead. During February 5th Shock Army was transferred to 3rd Ukrainian Front.

The blizzard was preceded by a snowstorm on January 5th and 6th, which dropped snow on the northern and central plains, and was followed by an outbreak of brutally cold temperatures from January 7th to 11th. The weather prediction for the day was issued by the Weather Bureau, which at the time was managed by Adolph's Greeley; it said: "A cold wave is indicated for Dakota and Nebraska tonight and tomorrow; the snow will drift hevily today and tomorrow in Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota and Wisconsin." On January 11, a strengthening surface low dropped south- southeastward out of Alberta, Canada into central Montana and then into northeastern Colorado by the morning of January 12. The temperatures in advance of the low increased some 20–40 degrees in the central plains (for example, Omaha, Nebraska recorded a temperature of at 7 a.m. on January 11, while the temperature had increased to by 7 a.m. on January 12). The strong surface low rapidly moved into southeastern Nebraska by 3 p.m. on January 12 and finally into southwestern Wisconsin by 11 p.m.

A strong storm impacts the Pacific coast of the United States on December 12 The North American winter season to date has expressed a significant level of variance. First, a cyclone in the Bering Sea enabled a change in the atmospheric pattern to occur; according to Jeff Masters from Weather Underground, this cyclone brought about a "ripple" in the jet stream, and the presence of a high- pressure ridge over the western United States and a low-pressure trough over the southern and central United States enabled a great intrusion of very cold air to pervade southward out of Canada. Following the onset of the cold wave, multiple snow events occurred; one significant storm dropped as much as of snow in a single area, and impacts covered a broad area. In December, yet another storm impacted parts of North America; the storm brought relief to drought-stricken parts of California, but it also brought dangerous mudflows to fire-ravaged areas where the soil could not handle the excess precipitation.

The low temperature at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago was on January 6. The previous record low for this day was , set in 1884 and tied in 1988. The National Weather Service adopted the Twitter hashtag #Chiberia (a portmanteau of Chicago and Siberia) for the cold wave coverage in Chicago and local media adopted the term as well. In spite of cold temperatures and stiff winds which exceeded the and air temperature when Chicago set its all-time wind chill record of in 1983, Chicago did not break the record because the NWS had adopted a new wind chill formula in 2001. The average daily temperature for the United States on January 6 was calculated to be . The last time the average for the country was below 18 was January 13, 1997; the 17-year gap was the longest on record.
