Disaster would strike Formula One again just two weeks later as fourth-placed Ludovico Scarfiotti was killed during the Rossfeld hillclimb event.

In that year, a close finish between Joaquín Balaguer and José Francisco Peña Gómez brought about a major conflict, as one side accused the other of fraud. The conflict was resolved with a pact that instituted separate presidential and congressional elections, the need for a candidate to receive 50%+1 of the vote to win in a first round, and prohibited presidential re-election. The agreement eventually worked in favor of the PLD, which won the presidential in the 1996 election, with Leonel Fernández defeating José Francisco Peña Gómez in a second round. Medina is considered the PLD's leading political strategist and negotiator.

His team selection was vindicated, however, as Europe finished the day 1 point ahead, closing the gap to 2 points behind the USA. On the final day of the competition, Faldo decided to play a "bottom-heavy" tactic, where the best players would start lower down the order; thus, if it went to a close finish, Europe would have its best players in play. This tactic seemed to backfire, as the US, leading by 2 at the start of the day, gained the 5 points they required by the eighth match, rendering the last four irrelevant. This led to some severe criticism of Faldo's strategic skills.
Stanerra, owned and trained by Irish retail millionaire Frank Dunne, returned to Japan in 1983, having enjoyed a brilliant season in Europe which included winning both the Hardwicke Stakes and the Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot. In 2010, The Times rated South Africa's choke in the final over as the second-biggest sporting choke of all time. In 2009, Shaun Pollock revealed that when betting at the Durban July horse race shortly after the match, he was told "Whatever you do, don't bet on number 10, he doesn't run", a reference to Donald not running (he was wearing jersey number 10). The twists, turns and close finish resulted in many observers regarding the match as the perfect One Day International from an entertainment perspective. The record-breaking ODI between Australia and South Africa seven years later, in 2006, continued the close rivalry between the two teams.
This news caused another sensation, as with his projected arrival in the UK at the start of July he now seemed to be a contender for the fastest time, and (very optimistically) even for a close finish with Tetley. Once his projected false position approached his actual position, he started heading north at speed. Tetley, informed that he might be robbed of the fastest-time prize, started pushing harder, despite that his boat was having significant problemshe made major repairs at sea in an attempt to stop the port hull of his trimaran falling off, and kept racing. On 22 April, he crossed his outbound track, one definition of a circumnavigation.
In the second round they were drawn against each other and Gutta Percha See won in a close finish, only to be beaten by his 16-year-old son George "Young Gutty" See in the semi-final. Young Gutty See then lost to his cousin George "Flying Fish" Smart in the final. Although he usually lost in the early rounds of matches, Turkey Smart was still a force to be reckoned with. In January 1879 he got through three rounds of a match at Littleport, defeating nephew Jarman Smart along the way, only to lose in the semi-final to nephew Young Gutty See.
Rowing at the 1936 Summer Olympics featured seven events, for men only. The competitions were held from 11 to 14 August on a regatta course at Grünau on the Langer See. The final race, men's eights, was won by a working-class United States team from the University of Washington who, in what had become their trademark, started slow and outsprinted the competition to an exceedingly close finish, with only one second separating the top three finishers at the end of a six-and-a-half minute race.
They regained some pride in the Fifth Test, when Grant's two well-timed declarations put Australia under pressure on a difficult pitch and the West Indies won in a close finish by 30 runs. Despite their modest results, the West Indians were popular in Australia, wrote the Australian cricket historian A. G. Moyes, because they "played cricket as though it was great fun – seriously enough but with gaiety mixed with gravity". Grant led the team's Test batting averages with 255 runs at 42.30, including 53 not out and 71 not out in the Second Test.A. G. Moyes, Australian Cricket: A History, Angus & Robertson, Sydney, 1959, pp. 478–81.
Stewart was re-elected unopposed at the 1918 general election, standing as a Coalition Conservative. He held his seat at the 1922 general election in a three-cornered contest with 51% of the votes, a majority of 4,874 (19.3%) over his Liberal opponent Stephen Roxby Dodds. The Labour Party candidate came a poor third. At the next general election, in 1923, Labour did not field a candidate in the Wirral. The Times noted that Stewart's 1922 majority of 4,874 was little higher than the Labour vote of 4,363, and expecting Labour voters to support the Liberal candidate it predicted a close finish, but expected that Stewart would be returned.
On his first appearance of 1994, Sunshack started favourite for the Prix Hocquart over 2400 metres at Longchamp but was beaten into third by Vadlawys and Fair Fabulous in a close finish. He was never in contention and finished nineteenth, thirty-five lengths behind the winner Erhaab. After a break of more that three months he returned for the Prix Niel at Longchamp in September and finished third behind his stablemates Carnegie and Northern Spur.

Australia's attack was weakened further with McDermott struggling through stomach cramps, but with Mark Waugh taking command of the situation and bowling, England struggled. Thorpe (83) and Crawley (71) added 71 for the fourth wicket, but it was Crawley's partnership with DeFreitas that set ensured a close finish. DeFreitas's 88 from 95 balls (9 fours, 2 sixes), a Test-career best that included 22 off one McDermott over, helped set the Australians a target of 263 for victory in 67 overs. After safely making it to the lunch interval, the home side slipped to 23/4 in five overs, Malcolm bowling aggressively in a spell of 3–13.

His only first- class and List A appearances for the Somerset first team came towards the end of the 1969 season, in which Somerset finished at the bottom of the County Championship for the first time since 1955. Galley featured prominently in a close finish in his first match, against Yorkshire at Headingley, when he and Roy Palmer played out 15 overs from Test bowlers Don Wilson and Geoff Cope without scoring to save the match. But overall, he had little success, making just 27 runs in six innings, with a top score of 17 in his final first-class match against Kent. Galley reappeared in Minor Counties cricket with Wiltshire in 1980.
He was then sent to Newmarket in October for the six furlong Middle Park Stakes, one of the season's most important races for two-year-olds, and won in a close finish from the Irish-trained Hugh Lupus and the July Stakes winner Tamerlane. In the Free Handicap, a ranking of the best two-year-olds to have run in Britain, Our Babu was assigned the top rating of 133 pounds, one pound ahead of Hugh Lupus, thereby matching the achievement of his sire, who had been the top juvenile of 1947. He was also the top-rated colt in the independent Timeform ratings, sharing a mark of 131 with Beau Prince and Hugh Lupus.
Gosden, who was winning his third consecutive Nassau Stakes, said "Her stamina kicked in today in the final furlong and she has beaten a tough nut of a filly who brought good solid form to the table". Sultanina ran twice in France after her win in the Nassau Stakes but failed to reproduce her earlier success. In a strongly-contested Prix Vermeille at Longchamp Racecourse on 14 September in which she was ridden by Ryan Moore she finished fifth in a close finish behind Baltic Baroness, Pomology, Dolniya and Treve. In the Prix de l'Opéra over 2000 metres at the same track in October he faded badly in the closing stages and finished tenth of the eleven runners.
2019 WRC entry list The pair were looking for a top eleven finish to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics and the eight was seeking a top five finish.2019 World C'ship selections In the pair they won their heat, quarter-final and semi-final, thereby qualifying the boat for Tokyo 2020. In the A-final they led the race through the 3 x 500m marks but were pipped by New Zealand in a close finish and took the silver medal. In the Australian women's eight they placed second in their heat, came through the repechage and led in the final from the start and at all three 500m marks until they were overrun by New Zealand by 2.7secs.
In Boston, Massachusetts in 1988, he defeated former Olympian and British Super Middleweight champion Sam Storey to win the Irish middleweight title, then defeated world No. 5, Kevin Watts to win the USBA middleweight title. After reaching 16–0, Collins stepped in as a substitute in a WBA middleweight title fight after Michael Watson was injured in training, and fought 12 rounds against Mike McCallum in Boston in 1990. Collins was supported by a large crowd of Irish Americans as he battled the champion McCallum, with the fight being close early on before McCallum started to tire as Collins gained momentum in the later stages to bring a close finish at the end of 12 exciting rounds. McCallum got the win by unanimous decision.
Five months before the Games, he threw down a lifetime best of 1:03.63 to slip past the FINA B-cut (1:03.72) by almost a tenth of a second (0.1) at the All-American Championships in Austin, Texas, United States. Velez slipped to the front from lane one to touch the wall first in heat three with a remarkable Puerto Rican record in 1:01.80, slashing 1.83 seconds off his own entry standard and beating India's Sandeep Sejwal, who finished behind him, in a close finish by only a small fraction of a second. Despite his outstanding feat in the heats, Velez ended his Olympic campaign with a thirty-third place overall finish and did not advance to the semifinals.
As the most decorated Olympian of all-time, Michael Phelps got the opportunity to avenge the distance butterfly title that he lost in London four years earlier, when South Africa's Chad le Clos beat him to the wall. Moving to the front at the halfway turn, Phelps held off the Japanese challenger Masato Sakai by a 0.04-second margin to claim his twentieth Olympic gold medal and twenty-fifth overall in 1:53.36. Coming from sixth at the 150-metre turn, Sakai made a late surge on the final length to nearly upset Phelps towards a close finish, but he ended up taking the silver in 1:53.40. Meanwhile, Hungary's top seed and 2014 Youth Olympic champion Tamás Kenderesi powered home with a bronze in 1:53.62.
In a close finish, Invincible Spirit took the lead with about 75 yards left to run and won the race by a neck from Mugharreb, with Lady Dominatrix third and Orientor fourth. On 3 June he raced over the minimum distance of five furlongs for the only time in his career, when he took part in the Temple Stakes at Sandown Park. After tracking the leaders he was left behind when he could not get a clear run over one furlong out, before running on in the final furlong and finishing fifth, about four lengths behind winner Kyllachy. At Royal Ascot, Invincible Spirit raced in the Golden Jubilee Stakes (the renamed Cork and Orrery Stakes, which had been upgraded to a Group 1 race that year).
Essex (4pts) beat Middlesex (0pts) by four runs Essex Eagles extended their lead in the National League to eight points with a close win over Middlesex Crusaders and quenched nearly all hopes of a close finish for the title in that competition. Batting first, they had been worried by the opponents' captain Ben Hutton, who took three for 42, including top-scorer Ronnie Irani, as Essex faltered to 118 for 6. The Dutch international Ryan ten Doeschate ran well to make 44 off just 37 balls, as he played a major part in getting the Essex total to 202 for 8. Middlesex' top-order struggled, as only Paul Weekes passing 20 from the top seven, while Ed Smith and Ed Joyce both recorded ducks.
Though it was in a losing effort, Lowery played a memorable stretch of golf at The International in 2002. He holed out a shot from over 200 yards for a rare double eagle (or albatross) on the 71st hole to pull within one point, ultimately losing by the same margin after missing a birdie putt on the last hole. Coming near the very end of the tournament and creating such a close finish, Lowery's double eagle was one of the most dramatic in PGA Tour history since Gene Sarazen made a double eagle at 15 in the final round of the 1935 Masters Tournament. Two holes before his double eagle, Lowery also holed out a wedge from the fairway for an eagle.
Monade began her second season by beating Santa Rosa into second place to take the Prix Imprudence over 1400 metres at Maisons-Laffitte Racecourse in April. She was then stepped up in distance for the 2100 metre Prix Penelope later that month at Saint-Cloud Racecourse and won from Gaspesie with Santa Rosa in third. Monade was then sent to England and started at odds of 7/1 for the 184th running of the Oaks over one and a half miles at Epsom Downs Racecourse in which she was ridden by Yves Saint-Martin. The race produced an extremely close finish with Monade and the British-trained West Side Story racing side by side in the final furlong before crossing the line together.
Astaire took the lead soon after the start, accelerated a quarter of a mile from the finish and held on in close finish to win by a neck from Wiltshire Boulevard with Parbold a neck away in third. After the race Callan said "He's done it the hard way. He travelled so well and when I've let him down two out, he's taken two lengths out of the field, which probably won us the race,,, this is a lovely horse". On his final appearance of the season Astaire was stepped up again in class when he was one of ten colts to contest the Group One Middle Park Stakes over six furlongs at Newmarket on 12 October and started at odds of 8/1.
In his first Olympic event, the individual sprint, he placed sixth, one of three Norwegians who made it to the final competition round. He later won a gold medal with teammate Petter Northug in the team sprint event in a close finish with teams from Germany and Russia. Originally, Pettersen was not going to compete in the event, but a last-minute withdrawal by world champion Ola Vigen Hattestad due to illness left a slot open, and Pettersen was chosen to fill it. A number of teams were in contention following Pettersen's performance during the first leg of the race, and it was not until the last hill that Northug passed his opponents and took the lead entering the stadium where the race finished.

As a result of the close finish, USC lost the No. 1 ranking in the AP Poll, falling to No. 2 with 1,591 points and 32 first-place votes to LSU's 1,593 points and 33 first- place votes; however, the Trojans remained No. 1 in the Coaches Poll, keeping a more substantial lead: 1,483 points and 45 first-place votes to LSU's 1,454 points and 14 first-place votes.
Sefton made his debut as a three-year-old in the inaugural running of the Craven Stakes at Newmarket in April. He showed form far in advance of anything he had shown in 1877 by finishing half a length second to Thurio, with the pair well clear of the thirteen other runners. Sefton's next race was an unusual one for a Classic contender, as he took on older horses in the valuable City and Suburban Handicap at Epsom on 30 April. Carrying only 78 pounds he disputed the lead from the start, went to the front early in the straight and held on in a close finish to win by a head from the five-year-old Advance. On his next start Sefton ran in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on 7 May.
They could dictate a finishing order to the drivers—guaranteeing that one set of drivers would be extremely unhappy. Or they could arrange a tie, with the McLaren/Amon and Miles/Hulme cars crossing the line side-by-side. The team chose the last and informed McLaren and Miles of the decision just before the two got in their cars for the final stint. Then, not long before the finish, the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO), organizers of the Le Mans event, informed Ford that the geographical difference in starting positions would be taken into account at a close finish. This meant that the McLaren/Amon vehicle, which had started perhaps behind the Hulme-Miles car, would have covered slightly more ground over the 24 hours and would, therefore, be the winner.
Although the King's Stand Stakes and the Abbaye were the only two Group One races in Europe open to three-year-olds and older horses, no sprinter had previously completed the double. Double Form started 3.9/1 second favourite behind Thatching, with the other contenders including King of Macedon, Sigy, Ahonoora, Adraan (Prix d'Arenberg, Prix du Bois), Greenland Park and Kilijaro. Making the most of a favourable inside draw, Reid sent Double Form into an early lead and looked likely to win easily 400 metres from the finish. In the closing stage however, he began to tire but ran on "most bravely", and in a very close finish he prevailed by a head and a nose from Kilijaro and Greenland Park, with the Irish filly Baby Brew half a length away in fourth.
She tracked the front-running Aerolithe before launching a strong challenge on the outside but in another close finish she was beaten into fourth place behind Normcore, Primo Scene and Crocosmia. Lucky Lilac wins the Queen Elizabeth II Cup Lucky Lilac returned from her summer break to contest the Grade 2 Fuchu Himba Stakes over 1800 metres at Tokyo on 14 October and finished third behind Scarlet Color and Frontier Queen. Christophe Soumillon took over from Ishibashi for the filly's next race, the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup on 10 November at Kyoto in which she started the 4.4/1 third choice in the betting behind the three-year-olds Loves Only You and Chrono Genesis. Her other fifteen opponents included Crocosmia, Scarlet Color and Frontier Queen.
Diophon's owner Aga Khan III On 7 May, with Hulme in the saddle, Diophon started at odds of 11/2 in a twenty-runner field for the 116th running of the 2000 Guineas over the Rowley Mile course at Newmarket. In a very close finish, which saw the leaders racing up opposite sides of the wide Newmarket track, he was adjudged to have won by a head from Bright Knight with Green Fire a neck away in third. The photo-finish camera was not used in England at that time and most of the spectators disagreed with the judge's decision, believing that Bright Knight had crossed the line in front. The runner-up's jockey, Frank Bullock, stated that he was certain that he had won the race by at least a length.
Ridden by Canadian-born jockey Fred Herbert, Donau won the 1910 Kentucky Derby in a close finish over Joe Morris at a time of 2:06 2/5 on a fast track, winning a total of $4,850 for Gerst.Donau Racing Stats and Pedigree William Gerst had previously achieved a second-place finish in the 1907 Derby with his colt Zal and a third-place finish in the 1904 Derby with Brancas. Donau's trainer, George Ham, remarked on the colt's Derby win "The colt performed in a most remarkable manner and showed that he could go over a distance of ground, even though hard pressed by game opponents." After the Derby win, Donau's unruly behavior worsened to a point where he would lie down on the track if prompted too harshly by racetrack employees or trainers.
The other runners included Kala Shikari (Prix du Gros Chêne, Prix de Seine et Oise), the two-year-old King of Macedon, the Italian-trained Raga Navarro and Girl Friend (Prix Maurice de Gheest, Prix de Meautry, Prix de Saint-Georges, Prix du Petit Couvert). Ridden by Terry McKeown, Gentilhombre led from the start and maintained his advantage into the last 100 metres when several challengers emerged. In a very close finish the English colt was adjudged to have dead-heated with the French-trained four- year-old Mendip Man with Raga Navarro a head and a neck away in third and fourth. In their annual Racehorses of 1975 the independent Timeform organisation claimed that a viewing of the photo finish print indicated that Gentilhombre had narrowly but clearly won the race.
On his debut as a three-year-old Kris started 11/10 favourite for the Group Three Greenham Stakes at Newbury in which he was reopposed by Hardgreen, as well as the Guy Harwood-trained Young Generation. Looking very fit before the race he easily accounted for Hardgreen, but having his race seemingly won he was bustled up by Young Generation and Kris had to reassert himself before winning by three lengths. As the stable had already won the Craven Stakes with Lyphard's Wish, when stable jockey elected to ride Kris he became favourite for the 2,000 Guineas, despite reports that he had some training problems. In the race he was beaten half a length by the 20/1 outsider Tap On Wood and only just retained second in a close finish with Young Generation, who appeared somewhat unlucky in running.
The other six runners were My Patriarch, Safety In Numbers, Sonus and the leading National Hunt performers Morley Street, Oh So Risky (twice runner-up in the Champion Hurdle) and Corrouge (Scottish Champion Hurdle). Arcadian Heights took the lead from the start and set the pace before giving way to My Patriarch a mile from the finish but rallied to regain the advantage approaching the final turn. He held off a sustained challenge from Vintage Crop in the last quarter mile to win by three quarters of a length with a gap of seven lengths back to Sous in third place. On his third appearance in the Goodwood Cup Arcadian Heights carried top weight of 133 pounds and finished third in a close finish, beaten just over a length by the winner Tioman Island with My Patriarch and Further Flight unplaced.
However, at the same time, "Republicans didn't put up much of a fight." Gonzales speculated that this may have been because Delaware has only one at- large U.S. House seat and thus national Republicans saw no possible advantage to be gained by control of the state's senate in redistricting following the 2020 census. He also suggested that Democrats overstated Republican strength in the 10th district, since Marino's close finish in 2014 may have had more to do with Hall-Long's husband getting arrested and charged stealing some of Marino's signs a week before the election (a qualifier also noted by David Weigel in The Washington Post) than any GOP gains in what may well have been their best possible election year in recent memory. "The good news for Democrats is that demonizing President Donald Trump galvanized and mobilized Democratic voters", Gonzales wrote.
Rhein Kraft's trainer Tsutomu Setoguchi On her first appearance as a three-year-old, Rhein Kraft won the Grade 2 Fillies Revue, a major trial race for the Oka Sho, over 1400 metres at Hanshin on 19 February, beating Daring Heart and Air Messiah in a close finish. In the Oka Sho at the same track on 10 April Rhein Kraft started second favourite behind Cesario (Flower Cup), while the other sixteen runners included Shonan Peintre, Ambroise, Daring Heart, Air Messiah, Monroe Blond, Lailaps (Daily Hai Queen Cup), Felicia (Fairy Stakes) and Eishin Tender (Tulip Sho). Rhein Kraft was in contention from the start, went to the front in the straight, and held off a strong late challenge from Cesario to win by a head. Four weeks after her win in the Oka Sho, Rhein Kraft was matched against male opponents in the NHK Mile Cup at Tokyo Racecourse.
In a close finish, Shemaka prevailed by a neck from Baya, with Dancienne a length and a half away in third place. After a break of over two months Shemaka returned in the Group 3 Prix de la Nonette at Deauville Racecourse on 29 August in which she was accompanied by her pacemaker Mouloudya and started the 11/10 favourite ahead of four other fillies, namely Baya, Viviana (second in the Prix de Psyché), Adored Slew (second in the Prix de Minerve) and the British challenger Talented. Ridden by Mosse and racing on good to firm ground, she won by half a length and a nose from Baya and Talented. On her final racecourse appearance Shemaka contested the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe over 2400 metres at Longchamp on 3 October and, despite being made the 7.8/1 sixth choice in the betting, came home last of the 23 runners behind Urban Sea.
At the front, Lauda and Andretti were battling for first place, until the American made an error and was forced to let the Austrian through, and eventually dropped out due to a broken valve on his engine. Once a back-marker dropped oil onto the track, the Brabham was in a race of its own, seemingly unaffected by the slippery surface. In Lauda's biography, To Hell And Back, he wrote that whilst other cars had to reduce speed to drive carefully over the oil, the Brabhams could simply accelerate (as the fan was activated by the gearbox to get around regulations, this meant that higher speed produced much higher grip) through the affected parts of the track. Lauda went on to win by a huge 34.6 seconds despite according to Lauda 'trying not to show how dominant the car really was', followed by Patrese and Peterson in a close finish; the remaining points went to Patrick Tambay, Clay Regazzoni and Emerson Fittipaldi.
2010 saw another win for Lowndes and Triple Eight, this time with Mark Skaife, their fifth and sixth wins respectively. In 2011, Nick Percat became the first rookie to win the Bathurst 1000 since Jacky Ickx in 1977, alongside Garth Tander, with Tander only just holding off Lowndes in a close finish. With new regulations announced for 2013, the last winners of that iteration of regulations were Jamie Whincup and Paul Dumbrell in 2012, in the hitherto second closest non-formation finish in Bathurst 1000 history, with David Reynolds and Dean Canto finishing 0.31 seconds behind the Triple Eight Holden VE Commodore. The closest non-form finish came just the year before, when Tander and Percat lifted the trophy 0.29secs ahead of Lowndes and Skaife. The 2013 season saw manufacturers other than Ford and Holden enter The Great Race for the first time since 1998, under the New Generation V8 Supercar (originally known as Car of the Future) regulations that were introduced that year.
Kirui closed his season with a ninth place finish at the New Delhi Half Marathon. Kirui established himself in his own right in 2011. In a close finish at the CPC Half Marathon, he ran a personal best time of 59:40 minutes, completing the distance in under an hour for the first time. He won the 10,000 metres race at the Kenyan Administration Police Championships and produced an upset at the Kenyan Athletics Championships by claiming the national title over the distance, beating African champion Wilson Kiprop and Boston Marathon winner Geoffrey Mutai among others. This gained him a place on the Kenyan team for the 2011 World Championships in Athletics in Daegu. He ran a personal best of 27:25.63 minutes in the event final, which brought him sixth place behind his compatriot Martin Mathathi. Following his world championship appearance, he returned to pacemaking duties on the marathon circuit. He aided Patrick Makau to a world record time at the 2011 Berlin Marathon.
Despite showing good results she never competed in pentathlon at major meets. At the Tokyo Olympics that same year, she placed first in the final of the 80 m hurdles. In a close finish, the first three runners all timed 10.5 seconds, equal to the world record (although the record was not ratified due to a wind). Electronic timing showed Balzer had beaten the two other medalists by one and two hundredths of a second, respectively. Two years later, Balzer won a second title at the 1966 European Athletics Championships, and then placed fifth in the 1968 Olympic final; she was the Olympic flag bearer for East Germany at those Games. That was the last major event in which the high hurdles were run over 80 m; from 1969 on, the event became the 100 m. Balzer set the inaugural world record in that event, in June 1969, then subsequently lowered it twice during that same year. She also successfully defended her European title in Athens, which she repeated in Helsinki in 1971.
After racing in mid-division the favourite made a forward move in the straight but was slightly hampered in the closing stages and finished third behind Dee Majesty and Makahiki. Ikee later said that the tactics employed had been "a mistake", commenting "this colt is big and has long limbs and he's not able to take small steps". On 29 May, in front of a 140,000 crowd at Tokyo Racecourse, Satono Diamond was one of eighteen colts to contest the 83rd running of the Tokyo Yushun and started second favourite behind Dee Majesty. He was positioned several lengths behind the early leaders before moving up to dispute the lead in the straight but in a very close finish he was beaten a nose by Makahiki with Dee Majesty half a length away in third place. Satono Diamond's trainer Yasutoshi Ikee After a break of almost four months, Satono Diamond returned to the track in the Kobe Shimbun Hai (a major trial race for the Kikuka Sho) over 2400 metres at Hanshin on 25 September.
In theory, one of the factors that is most likely to increase turnout is a close race. With an intensely polarized electorate and all polls showing a close finish between President George W. Bush and Democratic challenger John F. Kerry, the turnout in the 2004 U.S. presidential election was close to 60%, resulting in a record number of popular votes for both candidates (around 62 million for Bush and 59 million for Kerry). However, this race also demonstrates the influence that contentious social issues can have on voter turnout; for example, the voter turnout rate in 1860 wherein anti-slavery candidate Abraham Lincoln won the election was the second-highest on record (81.2 percent, second only to 1876, with 81.8 percent). Nonetheless, there is evidence to support the argument that predictable election results--where one vote is not seen to be able to make a difference--have resulted in lower turnouts, such as Bill Clinton's 1996 re-election (which featured the lowest voter turnout in the United States since 1924), the United Kingdom general election of 2001, and the 2005 Spanish referendum on the European Constitution; all of these elections produced decisive results on a low turnout.
In 1953, Williams played regularly for the university side and in the match against Free Foresters, an itinerant amateur side of varying quality whose matches against the universities were considered first-class at this time, he made his first century, scoring 115 in a match ruined by rain. In the University Match, he made 40 and 5 as Oxford lost by two wickets in a close finish. The 1954 season saw Williams achieve 1,000 runs in the season for the first time: he finished with 1128 at an average of 30.48 runs per innings. He was particularly successful for Oxford University, batting generally at No 3 and scoring 115 against Lancashire and then an unbeaten 139 followed by 89 in the second innings in the match against Hampshire. He was not successful in the University Match, batting just once and scoring 14. Later in the summer, he played in 11 matches for Essex, but his highest score for the county was only 54. Williams was captain of the Oxford University cricket team in his final year at the university, 1955. The team was not successful, failing to win any of its first-class matches, and Williams' captaincy attracted some criticism in Wisden Cricketers' Almanack.
