The Metropolitan Museum of Art said Thursday that it would temporarily close its Fifth Avenue flagship and two other locations — the Met Breuer on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and the Met Cloisters in northern Manhattan — starting Friday in response to the coronavirus outbreak.

In addition to it being the largest show the museum has ever held, it had an unusually long run (May through October) and was housed in the Cloisters, the museum's medieval branch in far northern Manhattan, which helped draw visitors to the distant outpost.

But before that, it was off to the Cloisters, the faux-Medieval pile near the northern tip of Manhattan, where the Metropolitan Museum of Art displays much of its Medieval European art collection and Bulgari squired guests for a private dinner for 200 in an outside courtyard.

The monastic-inspired garb at the Gala (worn by, for example, Greta Gerwig) and at the Met Cloisters galleries (seen here) would have been particularly nonsensical for early Christians who vowed to live a life of simplicity and poverty as preconditions for wholehearted devotion to God.

Over 7.36 million visitors have passed through its exhibitions, largely drawn in by landmark exhibitions like Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination at The Met Fifth Avenue and The Met Cloisters, and the tail ends of highly-publicized shows like Michelangelo: Divine Draftsman and Designer and David Hockney.

The members of Sonnambula—who include, in addition to Weinfield, the violinists Jude Ziliak and Toma Iliev, the gambists Amy Domingues and Shirley Hunt, and the keyboard player and tenor James Kennerley—are in residence at the Cloisters this season, under the auspices of the Met Museum's LiveArts program.

And while the catwalk was not actually inside the church, the stone-flagged courtyard of The Cloisters still served as an enviable backdrop — and one Alessandro Michele, who used to live in London, chose because of his "[obsession] with British culture, past and present," according to The Telegraph.

The show — organized by Barbara Drake Boehm, the senior curator for the Met Cloisters, and Melanie Holcomb, a curator in the department of medieval art — leads us into a field of violent combat, but does so gradually, focusing at the outset on a relatively peaceable form of human competition: shopping.

For most of the last 40 years, this has included performing at the annual Medieval Festival in Fort Tryon Park, which began at the Cloisters before the Washington Heights and Inwood Development Corporation revived it in Fort Tryon Park in 1983, in an effort to draw people to the neighborhood.

New signs were installed at entrances to the Met, the Met Breuer and the Cloisters, and on the Met's 82nd Street steps: "New York State residents and NY, NJ and CT students, the amount you pay is up to you" (though some visitors on Thursday said they didn't see them).

This season, a trip to the Cloisters inspired a host of tapestry prints, parchment shades and stylized florals, not to mention chain mail and silver filigree embroideries, all balanced by a stripped-down silhouette: narrow pants with deep cuffs and squared-off jackets; pencil skirts with slouchy sweaters sporting jeweled bouquets.

Secular clothing is displayed amid the Medieval and Byzantine Galleries and in the Robert Lehman Wing at the Met Fifth Avenue; clerical garments are installed downstairs in the Costume Center of that building — no photography is allowed there; and additional garments are shown throughout the galleries far uptown at the Met Cloisters.

He was in New York to introduce "Pope Francis: A Man of His Word," his documentary exploring the life and philosophy of the Argentine pontiff, but found time nonetheless for a detour to the museum's sprawling exhibit, which occupies several galleries at its Fifth Avenue address as well as the stone-and-stained-glass Cloisters.

The scenography at the Met is willfully operatic — spotlights, choir music — which militates against serious thinking about fashion and religion, but up at the Cloisters, by far the strongest third of the show, you can commune more peacefully with an immaculate Balenciaga wedding gown or a divine Valentino gown embroidered with Cranach's Adam and Eve.

When two Romanesque sculptures, "Virgin and Child in Majesty" and "Enthroned Virgin and Child" were installed at the Cloisters on either side of an ensemble by Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren for Viktor & Rolf, I found myself contrasting the rhythmic but otherwise ascetic carving of the two ancient works with the glittering textures of the lavish garments.

So it was a perfect match of music and place on Saturday morning at the Cloisters, the Metropolitan Museum of Art's medieval outpost in Upper Manhattan, when the sound of the organ in Stockhausen's "Himmelfahrt" ("Ascension") filled an airy 12th-century chapel, punctuating periods of velvety richness with gusts of discordance and cleansing pings of a bell.

The show is split into two parts, between the Met Cloisters and the museum on Fifth Avenue, with most of the fashion representing monastic orders and sacraments on display at the medieval Upper Manhattan structure, and the liturgical and papal vestments from the Vatican being shown in the Anna Wintor Costume Center, the Medieval and Byzantine Art area, and the Robert Lehman Wing of the main museum.

In addition to Ms. Miller's residency, Faustin Linyekula, the Congolese dancer and choreographer, will create a work for the Vélez Blanco Patio, the Met's 16th-century Spanish courtyard; the choreographer Eiko Otake will create pieces for the Met, the Met Breuer and the Cloisters; and "The Museum Workout," a collaboration between Monica Bill Barnes and Maira Kalman, will return after this season's sold-out run.

The MetLiveArts season will also feature the early-music ensemble Sonnambula at the Cloisters; a hip-hop dance performance in the Arms and Armor Court; "Songs from the Spirit," a new work with choreography by Silas Farley, a New York City Ballet dancer, to songs composed by inmates at San Quentin prison; and a performance of Purcell's "Dido and Aeneas" by the Handel and Haydn Society in the Temple of Dendur.

Due in part to the blockbuster exhibition on Michelangelo's drawings, and despite a new mandatory admission fee for non-New Yorkers effective in March, the Metropolitan Museum of Art set yet another attendance record for the fiscal year that ended on June 22016, attracting more than 7.35 million visitors to its three locations — at Fifth Avenue, the Cloisters and the Met Breuer — compared to 7 million last year.

There are 83 museums in New York to choose from: visit the Morgan Library & Museum, a former family mansion, known for its manuscripts (and in June, a Walt Whitman show), the Cloisters up in Fort Tryon Park which is the Medieval art wing of the Metropolitan (with mandatory brunch at the nearby New Leaf Café), or the Neue Gallery, which features the work of Gustav Klimt and a plush Austrian cafe, which you can visit even if the museum lines are long.
