Cherry Lake and nearby Truganina Swamp are habitat for the native sedge, chaffy sawsedge (Gahnia filum). The sedgefields provide food and habitat for the endangered Altona skipper butterfly (Hesperilla flavescens flavescens). The lake and associated salt marsh vegetation provides habitat for pelicans, black swans and purple swamphens. Weed control is carried out on a regular basis, targeting spiny rush, serrated tussock and boxthorn.

The bird hide can be accessed from the entrance to Truganina Swamp on Bell Avenue. A walking and cycling trail encircles the swamp and links to the Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail across Queen Street. Ongoing projects for the Swamp include monitoring of the bird species, Altona skipper butterfly and chaffy saw sedge in the area, re-vegetation, seed collecting and progagation.

Gahnia filum, the chaffy saw-sedge, is a tussock-forming perennial in the family Cyperaceae, endemic to Australia. It grows to between 60 and 110 cm in height. The species occurs in coastal salt marsh in the states of New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia. The caterpillar of the Altona Skipper butterfly uses this species for shelter during daylight hours, binding the leaves with silk.

Tectura palacea, common names the "surfgrass limpet" or "chaffy limpet", also spelled "chaffey limpet", is a species of small sea snail, a true limpet, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Lottiidae. The shell of this small limpet is about 6–10 mm in length and 2–3 mm in width. The shell dimensions are narrow to correspond with the limpet's habitat: the narrow blades of surfgrasses in the genus Phyllospadix, found at low tide levels. This species occurs in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, on the coast of North America, from Vancouver Island, British Columbia to northern Baja California, Mexico.

This 175-hectare wetland, comprising grasses, salt marsh and sedges, is fed mainly by water from Laverton Creek, which originates in Truganina. Truganina Swamp provides habitats for two endangered species – the Altona skipper butterfly, which feeds on chaffy saw sedge, and the orange- bellied parrot, which feeds on beaded glasswort and scrubland species of glasswort. The wetland is an important habitat for migratory wading birds such as pelicans, greenshanks, royal spoonbills and birds from as far as Siberia. It also supports many fish, such as black bream, common galaxias, short-finned eel, flat-headed gudgeon, Tamar River goby, small-mouthed hardyhead, goldfish, yellow-eyed mullet and mosquito fish.

The stems all grow to a similar height at the top of the plant, giving it a flat topped appearance which is a diagnostic character for this species. The peduncle is ~9 cm long and often branches twice near the top to form four strobili; the strobili are ~6 cm long and 3-4mm in diameter with a rounded tip. The strobili contain the sporophyll which are 2.2-3.5 X 1.6-3mm in size, light yellow, deltoid shaped, with a long sharp pointed tip, the edges are rough and chaffy; the spore case is almost round and the spores themselves are convex on their sides. The branches are 1-2.2mm wide and square with rounded angles when viewed in cross-section.

The Wet Gunpowder Award () is an Iranian symbolic award that according to organizers, is given to "ridiculous people whose chaffy character is evident to everyone and when this nature of theirs is accompanied with self-belief turns into an indefinite foolishness for them". The organizers, who have close ties to Basij and Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (The award is unveiled by Basij commander Mohammad Reza Naqdi), claim award winner is "someone who is against the Islamic Revolution" and who “against their own wishes, performs a service to the revolution.” The statue of the award is that of brain with dark glasses and hearing aids with a plaque of the Quranic verse: "Unwilling to hear, unwilling to speak, unwilling to see, then, they will not return to the way." In 2015, they awarded a parody of Golden Bear.
