New Zealand journalist David Farrier had no idea what he was getting into in 2014 when he answered an open call for men willing to participate in a "competitive endurance tickling" competition, and found himself falling down an unexpected rabbit hole of ancient internet legends, catfishing, sexual kinks, and sinister brushes with criminality.
But if it's a lie — if it's all an elaborate lie — then not only is some stranger catfishing pretty much everyone on the internet, but that person has deliberately made a mockery of people who are on the autism spectrum, people with schizophrenia, and people who struggle with self-harm or who battle suicidal ideation.
The NCIS announcement, which marks the end of the first phase of the multi-year Department of Defense joint investigation dubbed'Operation Surprise Party,' found that South Carolina inmates "used various social media platforms and dating sites posing as a female, exchanging pictures with service members" in a practice known as catfishing, according to NCIS.
Their randomized movements are potentially made even more random by the possibility of human interference with the forms; among the supplemental materials surrounding the installation are a set of flashlights, which visitors can use to attempt to instigate a reaction among the machines, in surely the most sophisticated and educational version of catfishing currently on record.
Burgess sparked a widespread backlash and even calls for its removal from Netflix, fueled by many who found its portrayal of Sierra as a fat heroine offensive; others objected to the plot's suggestion that catfishing is a viable romantic strategy, as well as jokes about a deaf character and the resurrected trope of the black best friend.
The Washington Post, which Project Veritas was trying to trap into publishing a false accusation against Roy Moore, turned the tables and exposed a hilariously inept attempt at catfishing: In a series of interviews over two weeks, [Jaime Phillips] shared a dramatic story about an alleged sexual relationship with Moore in 1992 that led to an abortion when she was 15.
Besides a catalog of hundreds of bogus posts by bad actors, the report details how vet-oriented dating services on social media were really Ukrainian-run catfishing accounts; some foreign-run Facebook accounts "left automated comments on one another's posts" to goose engagement; and various Twitter and Facebook accounts directed veterans to malware distribution points or offered nude images of vets to other users.
So when Forrest is tasked with reviewing "forgiveness" and goes straight to Suzanne's house, the immediate assumption is that he's about to ask her to forgive him not just for divorcing her for a TV show but for the many, many egregious things he's done to her since (see: catfishing, telling her he had brain cancer when he didn't, basically stalking her as she tried to move on, and so on).
Developers have done all sorts of weird, wacky and creepy things playing around with Tinder's (ostensibly) private API over the years, including hacking it to automatically like every potential date to save on thumb-swipes; offering a paid look-up service for people to check up on whether a person they know is using Tinder; and even building a catfishing system to snare horny bros and make them unwittingly flirt with each other.
You can probably go back pretty far to see plenty of examples of attempts to blackmail or extort public figures using sex because that was really the easiest way to do it: compromising photographs, allegations of an affair... However, this particular form of it, involving catfishing that seems to be targeting men, is probably fairly recent, and it is a little bit different from the kind of behavior I spend more of my time thinking about, which is people within a relationship who exchange sexual material, and then one of them decides that he or she is going to disclose that publicly.
