Playing in his final game at Michigan Stadium, Robinson split his playing time between the tailback, quarterback, and wide receiver positions. He accounted for 122 yards, including 98 rushing yards on 13 carries and 24 receiving yards on two receptions. With the injury to the ulnar nerve in his right elbow, Robinson did not throw the ball during the game and was forced to carry the ball in his right hand. In his final regular season game, the annual Michigan–Ohio State rivalry game, Robinson rushed for 122 yards on 10 carries, including a 67-yard touchdown run with a minute to go in the first half.

Rugby union matches are timed for 80 minutes, in two 40-minute halves. Canadian football games are timed for two 30-minute halves, each of which is further divided into 15-minute quarters. In both sports, the primary objective of the game is to carry the ball over the opponents goal line. In both sports the ball may be passed backwards an unlimited number of times, but in Canadian football the ball may be passed forward and sideways as long as the passer is behind the line of scrimmage, as opposed to rugby union where the ball cannot be passed but only kicked forward.

However, it was common to have a set of up to 3 games, 2 goals deciding, not necessarily on the same day. The hoop was not at the end of the field and could be approached from either side to score. The báire team typically stood in 3 rows of 7, the front being known as the phalanx or an bulc, heavy men who had different sticks and had different rules of play (similar to hockey in not being allowed to carry the ball or raise the stick high). Effectively they acted as a scrum (cromaiscín), gaining ground with the ball through main force.

There was a focus on physicality over finesse, as this type of playing style earned the moniker of "smash mouth" football. Willie Heston, a great early power back Back Willie Heston of Fielding Yost's "point-a-minute" Michigan team has been acknowledged as the first to play at what later was designated as the tailback position on offense. Prior to Heston, left halfbacks ran plays in one direction, and right halfbacks ran plays in the other direction. Because of Heston's speed and agility, Yost placed Heston in the tailback position so that he could carry the ball on plays to either side of the line.

He uncorked a 41-yard run on his third of five consecutive runs to open the drive; he would carry the ball on ten out of thirteen plays, running over six minutes off the game clock and forcing UConn to use all of its remaining timeouts. The drive finally was stopped at the UConn 15-yard line. Smith kicked a 32-yard field goal--his third of the game--to give Marshall a 16-10 lead. UConn received the next kickoff with 1:44 left in the game, needing a touchdown to tie the score and an extra-point conversion to take the lead.

He was included in the Wigan Warriors first team squad for the first time in 2005 his first appearance being off the bench against Hull F.C. Coyle made his full début the next weekend against Whitehaven in the Challenge Cup, and had a man-of-the-match winning performance. Coach Denis Betts commented of his performance: "James is a really good player, as he showed when he started to carry the ball and create space in the second half. He started to become the player I believe he can be." In 2005 he was awarded Wigan Supporters' Association Under 21s Player of the Season award.

A special team is the group of players who take the field during kickoffs, free kicks, punts, and field goal attempts. Most football teams' special teams include one or more kickers, a long snapper (who specializes in accurate snaps over long distances), kick returners who catch and carry the ball after it is kicked by the opposing team, and blockers who defend during kicks and returns. Most special teams are made up of players who act as backups or substitutes on the team's offensive and defensive units. Because of the risk of injury, it is uncommon for a starting offensive or defensive player to also play on a special teams unit.

To receive a kickoff and set up a kickoff return, the receiving team sets up their players starting from 10 yards back from the point the ball is kicked from. There are usually one or two players positioned deep (around the goal line) that will attempt to catch or pick up the ball after it is kicked off by the opposing team's kicker. They will then attempt to carry the ball as far as possible upfield, without being tackled or running out of bounds.

Regarded as one of the best English centre backs of his generation, Campbell was a strong, athletic and imposing defender, with a good positional sense, and was also a strong tackler. Due to his height and physical power, he excelled in the air, both offensively and defensively, although he initially had to work hard to improve his heading ability during his teenage years. He did not possess good natural stamina, but had pace, power, agility and quick feet, as well as significant mental strength. Due to his versatility and range of skills, as well as his ability to carry the ball out of defence and get forward, he was also capable of playing as a right back on occasion.

Dickinson accepted a position with Tulane University to be their running backs coach. In the 1999 season, he guided five Green Wave players to carry the ball at least 38 times and help four of the five backs to achieve an average yard per carry of over 4 yards. Wanting to be close to his home, Dickinson moved back to Oklahoma where he would become the Recruiting Coordinator and Quarterback and Wide Receiver Coach for the University of Central Oklahoma (2003–06). Here, he was attributed with bringing in highly touted recruiting classes and helped the Central Oklahoma Bronco quarterbacks pass for 8,944 yards and over 40 touchdowns in his four seasons with the team.

Junior Eldstål (born 16 September 1991) is a Malaysian-Swedish footballer who last played as a defensive midfielder for Malaysian club Johor Darul Ta'zim F.C. and the Malaysian national team. He plays as a defensive midfielder by nature, often playing as a box-to-box midfielder due to his natural stamina and tends to carry the ball forward to where he can opt to play a quick pass upfield or launch a powerful shot towards goal. Due to his stature and defensive abilities he has also been deployed as a defender. He started his career with Aldershot Town, but has mostly represented the reserve team, going on to have spells with Farnborough and Reading.

Early in his career, Barton mainly played a defensive role, with a game based on tackling and tracking back to shield the defence. As his career has progressed, he has begun to incorporate a more attacking approach to his play, which has resulted in a greater number of goals and assists, and his six goals from midfield made him Manchester City's leading scorer in the 2006–07 season, ahead of strikers Georgios Samaras, Bernardo Corradi, Émile Mpenza and Darius Vassell. Barton has been described as having a good work ethic and the ability to carry the ball and retain possession for the team. He has been praised for having a good passing range.

The Offensive Box is defined as the area bordered by the outside shoulders of the two Offensive guards, the line of scrimmage, and the distance of five yards behind the line of scrimmage on the offensive side of the ball. Four offensive players must be on the line of scrimmage at the snap, with no more than three of said players in the Offensive Box. The Offensive guards and center must wear numbers that denote they are ineligible to carry the ball nor may they release downfield on pass plays. All players outside the Offensive Box must be at least two yards outside the shoulders of an Offensive guard, and no closer than one yard to another player.

The midfielders will rotate in a triangle, across the top, and to and from the crease. The attackmen will rotate to and from X, and across the crease to the opposite wing. A player may "carry" the ball in a rotation as well; for example, a middie at the top right will carry to the top left, while the top left middie will cut to the crease, and the crease midfielder will cut into the space where the ball carrier came from. Driving to the goal is aided by the triangle rotations, as it is difficult for the defense to keep track of the cutting players and the player who is attempting to drive to the goal.

In addition to wing-play, he was also highly skilled at sending in long-range shots across the face of the goal, and could be relied upon to meet crosses from his left-winger with a powerful volley. Meredith had to deal with extremely physical defences, and was often boxed into the corner of the pitch by as many as four players. As his talents became widely regarded, more well organised defences would designate him with a man- marker, to try and isolate him from his teammates. This often left him reliant on an unselfish inside-right partner willing to fetch and carry the ball for him without expecting much in terms of goals or glory in return.

Walker, listed at 6 feet 2 inch, 222-pound running back and the most sought after high school football player in the nation, signed a national letter of intent to play for the University of Georgia Bulldogs on Easter Sunday, April 6, 1980. The season began with sophomore Carnie Norris starting ahead of Walker at tailback as the Bulldogs faced the University of Tennessee on September 6 in Knoxville. With Tennessee gaining a 9–0 lead early in the 2nd quarter, coach Dooley told his offensive coordinator, "I'm putting Herschel in...Don't be afraid to let him carry the ball." Tennessee held a 15–2 advantage late in the third quarter when Walker changed the momentum of the game.

After the Ohio State game, nationally syndicated sports writer Billy Evans called Uteritz a "star" and wrote that he was handling the team "in a brainy fashion." And in November 1922, the Associated Press praised Uteritz's performance: "Uteritz, the Michigan quarterback, has shown to unusual advantage, his heady playing being responsible to a large degree for this year's victories." A Wisconsin newspaper called Uteritz "one of the headiest pilots in the Big Ten" and noted that he always knows who should carry the ball and "his judgment at all times is excellent." After shutting out Illinois (24–0) and Michigan Agricultural (63–0), the Wolverines had a bye week before playing Wisconsin.

When the ball is goaled, the scorer is carried on the shoulders of his colleagues into the courtyard of the Green Man Royal Hotel (this ceremony returned to its recognised spiritual home in 2014 after an absence in 2013 due to the closure of the hotel). The two teams that play the game are known as the Up'Ards and the Down'Ards (local dialect for "upwards and downwards"). The Up'Ards are traditionally those town members born north of Henmore Brook, which runs through the town, and Down'Ards are those born south of the river. Described as a "stopper" (or man–marking defender) by Tom Sheen of The Guardian in 2014, Adams played as a centre-back. A tall, brave, rugged, physical, and committed defender, his main traits were his leadership, aerial prowess, and his ability to read the game and time his tackles. While initially he was not known to be the most gifted player on the ball from a technical standpoint, he developed this aspect of his game under Wenger, and he later excelled as a ball-playing centre-back, in which he became known for his ability to carry the ball out from the back, as well as his penchant for undertaking individual runs. However, he was also known for his lack of pace.

A talented and well-rounded world- class defender, in addition to his defensive skills, De Boer was also known for his pace, technical ability, accurate passing, and leadership, which enabled him to carry the ball out of defence, play it out from the back, or contribute to his team's offensive play by initiating attacks and creating chances for strikers with long balls. A versatile, intelligent, and elegant left-footed defender, with an ability to read the game and intercept loose balls, he was capable of playing both on the left and in the centre, and was even deployed as a sweeper. He was also a dangerous set-piece taker, renowned for his accurate bending free kicks from anywhere around the penalty area.

On the first day of training camp in 2018, White was released from Edmonton, with General Manager Brock Sunderland refusing to comment. White was added to the practice roster for the Hamilton Tiiger-Cats following the conclusion of the preseason and spent the first 3 weeks there to learn the Hamilton playbook, while starter Alex Green was injured; reserve national backs Mercer Timmis and Sean Thomas Erlington filled in, with help from Nikita Whitlock who was temporarily converted from defensive lineman to carry the ball. White made his debut in week 4 against Saskatchewan, rushing twice for 9 yards. White would see more usage the next two games, before Green's return caused White to go back to the practice roster.

Described by David Pleat of The Guardian as a "no-nonsense" defender, Vidić has been labelled as a "tough" centre back, who was known for his physical challenges. He was considered to be one of the world's best centre-backs in his prime due to his defensive consistency and awareness, as well as his strength, leadership, and ability in the air, which made him a goal threat on set pieces. As such, he formed an effective and successful defensive partnership with a more mobile and technical defender such as Rio Ferdinand during their time together at Manchester United. Unlike Ferdinand, however, his playing style focussed primarily on the defensive aspect of the game, rather than attempting to carry the ball forward or play out from the back.

He went straight into the starting eleven for their match the following day, away to Shrewsbury Town, and after 22 minutes he collected a cross from Lewis Young and rounded the goalkeeper to set up the opening goal for Saido Berahino. The match finished as a 1–1 draw. In his second game for the club, he "took advantage of a slip by his marker to carry the ball inside another challenge and smack a right-footed shot inside Barry Roche's near post", his first league goal which proved to be the winner as Northampton beat Morecambe 2–1. He returned to Birmingham at the end of the month having scored once from three appearances. Asante was part of the Birmingham squad that went on a tour to Austria ahead of the 2012–13 season.

In both sports, the essence of the game is to carry the ball over the opponent's goal line (Rugby requires the ball to be placed on the ground with downward pressure to score). In both sports the ball may be passed backwards an unlimited number of times, but in American football the ball may be passed forward once (and only once) as long as the passer is behind the line of scrimmage, as opposed to rugby union, where the ball cannot be passed forward but only kicked or carried forward. Even when kicked, only the kicker or players behind the kicker are allowed to catch or interfere with play. In both sports, play is stopped when the ball goes out of bounds, when a player or team commits a foul or after any scoring play.

At the end of the 1897 season, his teammates elected him as the captain of the 1898 Chicago Maroons football team. At the time of his election as team captain, the Chicago Daily Tribune wrote: "In guarding the men who carry the ball and in breaking up the interference of the opposing team he is unsurpassed in the West, and is a hard man to stop when he himself advances the ball." For the 1898 and 1899 seasons, Kennedy was moved to the quarterback position. In November 1898, questions were raised as to Kennedy's eligibility to play college football. An individual formerly associated with Chicago football, who was then coaching in Iowa, wrote a letter to the University of Chicago reporting that Kennedy's mother had informed him that her son was receiving $500 a year to play football at Chicago.

A hard-tackling and physically imposing left-footed defender, with good technique and ball- playing ability on the ground, Acerbi is considered to be one of the best Serie A and Italian defenders in circulation. He often plays as a left–sided centre-back in either a three or four–man back–line, and is known for his defensive consistency, charismatic personality, and leadership as a footballer, as well as his ability to carry the ball out from the back. A tall and physically powerful centre-back, although he lacks significant pace, his strength, reading of the game, and timing allows him to excel in physical duels with his opponents, while his height and heading ability also make him effective in winning aerial challenges, and also allow him to contribute offensively to his team with additional goals.

The objective of the game is for players to use a wooden (ash) stick called a hurl (in Irish a ', pronounced or ) to hit a small ball called a ' between the opponents' goalposts either over the crossbar for one point, or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for one goal, which is equivalent to three points. The ' can be caught in the hand and carried for not more than four steps, struck in the air, or struck on the ground with the hurl. It can be kicked, or slapped with an open hand (the hand pass) for short-range passing. A player who wants to carry the ball for more than four steps has to bounce or balance the ' on the end of the stick, and the ball can only be handled twice while in his possession.

Hence the term triple because the fullback is option number one, the quarterback keeping the ball is option number two, and the quarterback pitching to the slotback is option number three. The triple option forces defenses to worry about fullbacks running in the middle of the offensive line and to worry about quarterbacks and slotbacks running to the outside of the line. The decision of who is to carry the ball (which option to make) can either be made before the play in the huddle, or during the play by the QB, who will make decisions based on the position and play of certain defensive players and what they are doing. The quarterback reads the defensive end on the side the play is going to when deciding whether to hand to the fullback or to keep it himself.

A player could carry the ball only when being pursued. As a result of this, Harvard refused to attend the rules conference organized by Rutgers, Princeton and Columbia at the Fifth Avenue Hotel in New York City on October 20, 1873 to agree on a set of rules and regulations that would allow them to play a form of football that was essentially Association football; and continued to play under its own code. While Harvard's voluntary absence from the meeting made it hard for them to schedule games against other American universities, it agreed to a challenge to play the rugby team of McGill University, from Montreal, in a two-game series. Still, in a summer when most women are forced to play dumb and strip to thrill or kill, Pfeiffer does herself and her endangered species proud." Kevin McManus in The Washington Post wrote: "Unhappily, Dangerous Minds, which tells the story of such a [charismatic] teacher, merits only a C. And if it weren't for Michelle Pfeiffer, we'd surely be looking at a more dismal grade… writer Ronald Bass sprinkles the script with saccharine lines that sound plain dumb coming from high schoolers.

The game has some new features and many other features that came from its predecessors. New features include the Hurricane ramp which is a ramp that circles the whole playfield and acts as the skill shot when the player shoots the ball up the ramp on the right side of the playfield awarding the player 500,000 and adds up and additional 250,000 each time the skill shot is made successfully. Another new feature is the Juggler in the middle of the playfield that shoots the ball up and then U-turns back down to the Pop bumpers and also acts as the ball lock for multiball. Several other features return from both Comet and Cyclone as well, like the Comet ramp in the middle of the playfield and the Ferris wheel mechanism from Cyclone In which this game has a double Ferris Wheel other than a single one to carry the ball from one ferris wheel to another, then to the ramp and back to the playfield.

Described by Stephan Uersfeld of ESPN FC as "one of the greatest midfielders of his generation," Möller was a talented, versatile, and complete advanced playmaker, who was known for his range of passing, creativity, vision, intelligence, and technical ability, as well as his agility, reactions, and his speed of thought and execution, which enabled him to play first–time passes; he also had the ability to carry the ball or run forward at defences while in possession. The term box-to-box midfielder (shortened as BBM or B2B) refers to central midfielders who are hard-working and who have good all-round abilities, which makes them skilled at both defending and attacking. These players can therefore track back to their own box to make tackles and block shots and also carry the ball forward or run to the opponents' box to try to score. Golf Magazine Clubtest 2012 Drivers Ladies and seniors typically have slower swing speeds (60–85 mph), and so to maximise distance, it is important to increase "hang time" so that the lower horizontal velocity at launch can carry the ball farther. These players generally benefit from a more flexible shaft and a higher loft angle; this combination "times" the release of stored energy in the shaft to the slower swing, and the increased loft will launch the ball higher and increase backspin to improve flight time. It was the Dragons eighth consecutive premiership and their third consecutive grand final win against the Western Suburbs Magpies. A tall and physically powerful striker, Casagrande usually played as a centre-forward. Although he was capable of scoring goals, and had a consistent goalscoring rate throughout his career, he was not the most prolific forward during his time in Italy; however, he was a hard-working team player, who usually acted in more of a supporting role, that is known as the "centravanti di manovra" (which literally translates to "manoeuvring centre-forward") in Italian football jargon, a precursor to the modern false-nine role, and was capable of operating across the entire front line. Although he lacked pace, he was known for his excellent technical ability, despite his large physique, as well as his ability to carry the ball. His height, strength, elevation, and heading accuracy enabled him to excel in the air, and saw him score several decisive goals from headers; he also possessed good link-up play, and was known for his ability to play the ball first time, lay it off to other players, or provide assists to teammates through knockdowns with his head or first–time passes.

Howard shared the Bears' backfield with Tarik Cohen in the 2017 season. After disappointing outings of 52 yards against the Atlanta Falcons and seven yards against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to start the 2017 season, Howard recorded 140 yards and two touchdowns against Pittsburgh in Week 3, including the game-winner in overtime. After gaining 53 yards against the Green Bay Packers and 76 yards against the Minnesota Vikings in Bears losses, he was asked to carry the ball an NFL-season-high 36 times in Week 6 to support rookie quarterback Mitch Trubisky in his second game, which he converted into a career-high 167 yards in the victory over the Baltimore Ravens. It was the most rushing yards by a Chicago Bear since Matt Forte's 205 in Week 4 of 2011. After recording 65 rushing yards in a 17–3 win over the Carolina Panthers, Howard added 102 yards in Week 8 against New Orleans, and 125 yards in Week 11 against Detroit, joining Le'Veon Bell as the only player with three 125+ yard rushing games on the season.

Sergej Milinković-Savić has established himself as a "complete midfielder", in the modern sense of the term, which earned him the moniker the Paul Pogba of Serbia. A versatile player, he is capable of playing in several midfield roles, including as a "trequartista," or in a holding role, although he is usually deployed as a central midfielder, in the "mezzala" role. His style of play has been compared by pundits to that of players such as Zinedine Zidane and Yaya Touré, as he blends the traditional attacking movement, positional sense, and finishing ability of an attacking midfielder, with the height and physicality of a target man or defensive midfielder; as such, he also is effective in the air, and is capable of scoring goals with his head as well as either foot, by making late runs from behind into the penalty area, or striking from distance. He also possesses good technique, tactical intelligence, vision, and passing ability, despite his lack of pace, as well as tenacity and an excellent defensive work-rate, which enables him to help out at both ends of the pitch, carry the ball, and start attacking plays after winning back possession.

A complete, tenacious and consistent two-footed player, Nedvěd frequently played as a left-sided, offensive wide midfielder or as a left-winger throughout his career, due to his crossing ability with his left foot, as well as due to his ability to cut inside and shoot with his right foot, although he was capable of playing anywhere in midfield due to his offensive and defensive work-rate, as well as his versatility, physicality, and tackling ability, which enabled him to start attacking plays after winning back possession. He was also deployed as a central midfielder on occasion, as well as in an attacking midfield and playmaking role, or as a supporting striker, where he excelled as an assist-man due to his excellent dribbling ability, passing range and vision. Primarily known for his powerful shots and volleys from distance, as well as his stamina, he was also a dynamic player, who was noted for his speed, acceleration, endurance, technique and goal- scoring ability, which often saw him carry the ball and undertake forward surging runs from midfield. He was also an accurate set-piece and penalty kick taker.

As a freshman for the 2003 Wolverines, he was the regular kicker for the team from the start, making four point after touchdowns (PATs) in the first game of the season. Beginning his streak of many game-winning kicks for the Wolverines, he made the game-winner in the largest comeback in Michigan history, capping a 21-point 38-35 comeback victory against Minnesota with a 33-yard field goal with 50 seconds left in the Battle for the Little Brown Jug. Rivas was involved in a controversial national story in the October 4, 2003 when Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr changed the punting gameplan in the middle of the game by asking Rivas to line up as a punter and carry the ball or kick while rolling to his right behind a wall of blockers. After it worked twice, the Iowa Hawkeyes blocked the third attempt; the resulting great field position led to Iowa taking the lead, breaking a 20-20 tie en route to a 30-27 win. As a sophomore for the 2004 Wolverines team, his season-best 4-4 field goal performance came in a September 11, 2004 28-20 loss to Notre Dame in the Michigan – Notre Dame football rivalry game.
