To help boats leave (downstream) a lock, the locksman would sometimes open the paddles to create a swell, which would help "flush" the boat out of the lock. In 1929 Madeleine Zillhardt bought the barge with the profit from reselling a drawing and donated it to the Salvation Army on condition it be renamed Louise-Catherine after her companion, Louise Catherine Breslau, who had died shortly before. A friend of hers and Breslau's, Winnaretta Singer, had it brought from Rouen and commissioned Le Corbusier to design its conversion into a 160-bed homeless shelter. He created three dormitories, dining rooms, toilet facilities including showers, quarters for a boatsman and the shelter director, and a hanging garden on the former bridge. He installed square windows and thin columns and designed the furniture, including cupboards with sliding doors.

Born the son of Olympic boatsman Emile Thubron in London, he was educated at Lancing College and Royal Military College, Sandhurst and was given a commission in the North Staffordshire Regiment in 1924. In 1942 he fought with the First British Infantry Division in the Tunisian campaign and in January 1944 was General Staff Officer of the division which spearheaded the Allied landing at Anzio. He was awarded an OBE in 1944, followed by a DSO in 1945 as commander of the North Staffordshires in the ensuing Italian campaign, and by the end of the war had been promoted Brigade commander. After the war he served as Commandant of the Senior Officers' School for two years and was then Senior Army Liaison Officer in Canada.

The earliest record of a toi-otoko (問男) may be one from 1175, in which a number of Court officials hire an outside boatsman to transport them down the Yodo River. As he was not a servant or agent of the Court, or any manor, but rather a man hired out privately, this represents the emergence of the sorts of private enterprises which would come to dominate the economy centuries later. The ton'ya of the Edo period were little different, essentially acting as independent agents for specific elements of the domestic trade; most often they were shippers, but many were local handlers, middlemen, or warehousers. They would be hired by a firm (a merchant, a shop, etc.) which operated out of one of the big cities to manage or handle the firm's goods in some other portion of the country.

After the events of the previous novel's ending, in which Jacob and Emma hide in a phone booth with Addison, Jacob discovers he has the ability to control hollowgasts as well as see them, Jacob then makes the hollow he's currently controlling back off, making it possible for the three to escape from the phone booth they're trapped in. They rest and prepare for the journey to rescue their friends and the kidnapped ymbrynes. The group manages to narrow down where their friends may have been taken and, with the help of a boatsman named Sharon, they cross over a polluted river by the name of Fever Ditch to a dilapidated village corrupted with drugs and run by the wights (Devil's Acre). There Addison is captured, and Jacob and Emma are shocked to find many peculiar people who have become trapped there and, in some cases, have put themselves up for viewing and sale.
