Kenneth S. M. Davidson was a Mechanical Engineering professor at Stevens Institute of Technology who helped create the Davidson Towing Tank at the institution. In 1918 he served as a pilot in the Army Air Service. Davidson was a sailor. He raced in many boat races, one in 1935 to Norway, and the America’s Cup defender, the Ranger, in 1937.

He retained his place for the 1997 World Rowing Championships in Aiguebelette where the British eight finished fourth. He rowed for Cambridge against Oxford in the Boat Races of 1997 and 1998. In the former he was the heaviest man competing and was credited with having been the difference between the two crews. His 1998 crew still hold the course record.

The Bowl is a relatively wide grass-lawn area that slopes down to the water just south of the Hawthorne Bridge. The village is a centre of production of Ryukyuan pottery. The Shioya Ungami Sea Festival is held at Shioya Bay and other areas of Ōgimi in July. Observance of the festival dates back 400 to 500 years to the period of the Ryukyuan Kingdom, and begins with prayers at an asagi, or house of worship, by kaminchu, or priestesses of the Okinawan religion. The religious ceremonies are followed by dragon boat races.

Various women have won their "Blue" for competing in the Women's Boat Race against Cambridge: Anna Bean and Ann Bevitt (1989); Louise Sanford (1997); and Claire Weaver (1998). Some prominent individuals rowed while they were students at the college.

Sports fishermen are active and many enjoy the annual Shiver on the River walleye ice fishing contest. Each winter, trophy-sized fish are taken by fishing through holes in the river ice. Another fishing season is held in early spring. Hundreds of thousands of attendees flock to the riverbanks for annual festivals such as the River Roar speed boat races, Tall Ship Celebrations and two of the largest fireworks displays in the Midwest.

In the past, the Lake was a site of motor-boat races, and a popular active-tourism destination. Among sports practiced there one could find canoeing, surfing, swimming, and sailing among others. Underwater sports such as scuba diving or snorkeling were never well established because of both the lake's depth barely amounting to 2.5 metres, and its muddy waters. It used to be said that the waters of Słupca Lake had curative effect.

The traditional Pembroke rivalry with Christ Church permeates to rowing as well. Recent strong performances at the Fairbairn's Cup in Cambridge and the Oxford vs Cambridge College race at Henley Boat Races has led to new rivalries with some Cambridge colleges such as First and Third Trinity Boat Club and Caius Boat Club. Pembroke became the first male Oxford college crew to win the Fairbairn Cup in 2014, an achievement they repeated in 2015.

Morgan Gerlak (born May 4, 1992) is an American rower. He rowed for Oxford University in the 2016 Boat Race, the same year that he was President of Oxford University Boat Club. A graduate of Exeter College, Gerlak rowed in the reserve race in the 2015 Boat Races and represented the USA at the 2013 World Rowing U23 Championships where he was a member of the Men's Coxless Four that won the bronze medal.

The 67th Women's Boat Race took place on 26 March 2012. The race was conducted as part of the Henley Boat Races and took place at Henley-on-Thames. In a race umpired by multiple Olympic gold medallist Matthew Pinsent, Cambridge won by one quarter of a length in a time of 6 minutes 38 seconds, their first win since the 2007 race. The victory took the overall record in the event to 41-26 in Cambridge's favour.

Ka-taw or kick-volleyball is also a traditional Lao sport, where players use a rattan ball and advance play using their feet, knees, chest and head. The end of “Buddhist Lent” or Phansa is marked by boat races on the Mekong River. There are traditional races where villages will each sponsor a team, with a celebration at a designated host village. Robert Alexander Kinglake (9 June 1843 - 10 June 1915) was an English rower and barrister. Kinglake was born at Taunton. He was the second son of John Alexander Kinglake, MP for Rochester, and his wife Louisa Rebecca Liddon, daughter of John Liddon of Taunton. He was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. Kinglake rowed in the Cambridge boat in the Boat Races of 1863, 1864, 1865 and 1866, all of which were won by Oxford.

In a close race, Cambridge won by a quarter of a length, in a time of 6 minutes, 38 seconds. Oxford's Osiris won the women's reserve race against Cambridge's Blondie. The reserve race, between Oxford's Isis and Cambridge's Goldie, was held thirty minutes before the main race, at 1:45 p.m.

John was ordained as a Kassessa/Kassesso (clergy) at Ayroor church on 7 October 1932. He was appointed as vicar of Jerusalem church, Kottayam. There he was very active and motivated the youth for the church and social work, took part in youth camps, sports, and boat races, and was able to instill in them religious and social ideals. His tireless work affected his health and he had to retreat to a sanatorium for rest and treatment.

For the 2013 race the entire Henley Boat Races was moved to Dorney Lake because of flooding on the river. Oxford won the 2014 race on the Henley course having beaten Cambridge by a distance of four boat lengths over two kilometres. Since 1997 McGill crews have taken on crews from Queen's University in the annual McGill-Queen's Challenge. Considered the Canadian equivalent of the famed Cambridge-Oxford and Harvard- Yale boat races, it takes place in late April alternating between Montreal and Kingston. The 2006 race was hosted by McGill which chose the Lachine Canal as the venue. Reviews were so positive that there has since been talks of making it the permanent home of the race.

Inthas and Shan turn out in their best clothes in great numbers to celebrate the Buddhist Lent. Traditional boat racing, with dozens of leg-rowers in traditional Shan dress compete on teams with a team on each boat. These boat races are locally one of the most anticipated affairs during the Hpaung Daw U Festival. One of the tourist attractions in the village on the lake itself is the traditional silversmithing, which has fed into the local tourist economy.

The main clubhouse is located next to Mollymook Beach, adjacent to the Beachside course and offers gaming and dining options and a large function room with panoramic views of the beach. The smaller Mollymook Beach Bowling Club also offers bistro style dining and a range of recreational activities including lawn bowls and poker tournaments. The Mollymook Surf Lifesaving Club hosts many competitions and surf carnivals throughout the year. Events include surf boat races and ocean swims.

There is credible contention that St. John's regattas were held even earlier than 1816, likely in the 18th century. The races of 1818 were held on September 22 in order to coincide with the 57th anniversary of King George III's official coronation on September 22, 1761. It is from this date that the Regatta Committee takes its anniversary.

Chausey stone was used in the construction of Mont Saint-Michel. The typical boats of Chausey are the doris (dory), a flat-bottomed boat traditionally propelled by oars or nowadays an engine, used by the fishermen, and the canot chausiais, a small clinker-built sailing boat used for pleasure. Every August, the Chausey Regatta takes place on the first weekend of the neap tide. The festivities last all weekend, during which several boat races are organized.

Edwards-Moss was an outstanding oarsman, rowing for the Oxford crew in the University Boat Races for four years. He was in the winning crew of 1875 and the losing crew of 1876. The 1877 race was the only dead-heat in the Boat Race's history. He won the Diamond Challenge Sculls at the Henley Royal Regatta beating A. V Frere in 1877, but came second in the Wingfield Sculls later in the year to Frank Lumley Playford.

A ceremony featuring a fireworks display and led by the then Minister for Finance Ruairi Quinn marking the switching on of the clock was broadcast on RTE's The Late Late Show on Friday, 15 March 1996. It was temporarily removed three days later to facilitate boat races. The clock cost £250,000 to construct, with an additional £58,000 spent on repairs, installation and removal. The clock was finally removed in August for the annual Liffey swim and was not returned.

Nippers are able to participate in a variety of Individual and Team events, including beach sprints, Flags, swimming and board races, relays, March Past, etc. Unlike Seniors, Nippers do not compete in surf ski or surf boat races, and they also use shorter Surf Boards than their Senior counterparts. Nippers start to compete when they are in the Under 8s age group. The name and availability of the preschool-age group varies from club to club.

It is named after the adjacent Hong Lake, which since ancient times has periodically flooded. The traditional Chinese holiday, Dragon Boat Festival, celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, features boat races which are run on Hong Lake.

Every weekend, a British military band would perform on stage. Events such as concerts and sea carnivals was also held at Katong Park. The sea carnival was held annually in conjunction with Police Week and included activities such as boat races, night markets and wayang performances. The largest event held at Katong Park was Aneka Ragam Ra'ayat (People’s Cultural Concert), a series of government sponsored public concerts that aimed at promoting mutual understanding between different cultural groups.

Ronald Florijn (born 21 April 1961) is a former rower from the Netherlands and two-time Olympic gold medallist. Florijn won the gold medal in the men's double sculls at the 1988 Summer Olympics, alongside Nico Rienks. At the 1996 Summer Olympics, he repeated his gold medal performance winning the eight with coxswain event with the Holland Acht (Holland Eight). He also won five medals at the world championships in 1978–1995 in double, four and eight-manned boat races.

Toronto paramedics are heavily involved in various community programs and partnerships. Toronto's paramedics are active participants in the community which they serve. At the 'grass roots' level, Toronto's paramedics and EMDs fund a children's breakfast club, ensuring a nutritious breakfast for the children who live in several of the city's housing projects. Paramedics also participate in a variety of other events in the community, including their enthusiastic (and occasionally successful) participation in the dragon boat races staged annually by the city's Chinese community.

It was also at this time that the Society began construction of its first Model Railroad "The Union Connecting". Over the next twenty years, the Society moved from its original location to two other locations. Corderoy started rowing while an undergraduate at Oxford, where she quickly realised that she was better suited to coxing than rowing. She joined the Oxford University Women's Lightweight Rowing Club for the 2014/15 season, where she coxed the reserve boat, Tethys, in the 2015 Henley Boat Races. Returning for the 2015/16 season she became cox of the Blue boat that beat Cambridge at the 2016 Henley Boat Race. After graduation, Corderoy moved to London to start training as a solicitor.

John Noel Duckworth (25 December 1912 – 24 November 1980), MA, TD, was a rower and Anglican priest, Canon of Accra and the first Chaplain of Churchill College. Duckworth was born on Christmas Day (hence Noel) at Goole, the son of the Reverend James Duckworth and his wife Nancy Sumner. He was educated at Lincoln School before he went up to Jesus College, Cambridge. At Cambridge University he coxed the winning Cambridge crews in the 1934, 1935 and 1936 Boat Races.

Every year, in early June, teams of four meet at Nicomekl Park in Langley, British Columbia to begin the race. Unlike most traditional boat races, the Nicomekl River Race requires that all boats be made by the participants.

Her children thought she was victim of foul play; however, the Marysville Police Department maintains that there is no evidence to support that a crime was committed. The lake, named for Marysville citizen W. T. Ellis, Jr., offers a pleasant walk, picnic areas, and fishing. For decades, Ellis Lake hosted a 4th of July celebration every year, featuring power boat and cardboard boat races. Youths built boats out of cardboard and duct tape, then tried to cross the lake without sinking.

Guy Colquhoun Richardson (8 September 1921 – 27 October 1965) was a British rower who competed in the 1948 Summer Olympics. Richardson was born at Guildford, Surrey; he was the son of Alexander Richardson, an army officer and Olympic medalist, and his wife Agnes Thackeray. He was at Cambridge University and in 1947 and 1948, he was a member of the victorious Cambridge crews in the Boat Races. Most of the Cambridge crew of 1948 also rowed for Leander Club at Henley Royal Regatta.

However, when the police arrived, Danny Lee talked to the superintendent so they could continue filming. Scenes from the Dragon Boat festival were shot months apart, some footage was of the boat races and rest of the footage involving the actors was shot months later. It was planned for the boats to flip over during the chase but the owners refused because they felt it would bring bad luck. The scene at the airport were filmed at the Kai Tak Airport.

Port Perry's Victorian-era downtown is a tourist destination, with clothing stores, restaurants, cafés, bookstores, galleries and antique shops. In the summer, the town features the festivals Mississauga First Nation Pow Wow, the Highland Games, the Dragon Boat Races and StreetFest. Port Perry is also home to the Theatre on The Ridge summer theatre festival featuring 6 shows performed at Townhall 1873 during July and August. Its annual fair, held every Labour Day weekend, has been running for over 150 years.

Sean Bowden was chief coach for Oxford, having been responsible for the senior men's crew since 1997, winning 11 from 17 races. Indianhead Mountain opened in 1959 and has grown to become a major tourist magnet in both winter and summer. Snowmobile trails, cross-country skiing trails, and ice fishing on Sunday Lake have also drawn many tourists to the city during the winter months. During the summer, hiking, camping, fishing, and on occasion American Power Boat Association boat races on Sunday Lake contribute to a growing local tourist industry. Thomas Selby Egan (25 December 1814 - 11 May 1893) was the first cox to win The Boat Race for Cambridge University. He was a rowing coach and a German scholar. Egan was born in London, the son of John Egan. He was admitted to Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge on 29 June 1833. In his college days at Cambridge he was cox for the winning Cambridge boat in the Boat Races in 1836, 1839 and 1840 and was well known as an "aquatic coach".

In 1994, Aqua Fest returned to its roots with more local acts and an all volunteer staff and in 1995 brought back the popular theme nights. After initial experience at a summer camp in the Municipal Rowing Club, she began training all year round at the nearby Commercial Rowing Club. She studied mechanical engineering at University College Dublin, and received intensive rowing training from the college's Ad Astra Academy. In 2016, Lambe was reported to be studying for a master's degree in Engineering at Homerton College University of Cambridge, and was a member of the winning Cambridge crew in The Boat Races 2017. Topolski's rowing career included a gold medal in the 1977 World Championships in Amsterdam, in the lightweight eight, and a silver medal in the 1975 World Rowing Championships in Nottingham, in the lightweight coxless four. During his rowing career, Topolski appeared at the Henley Royal Regatta on 74 occasions, winning the Henley Medal four times. He was the finishing coach for Oxford University's Boat Race crew from 1973 to 1987. Of the fifteen Boat Races in which he was coach, Oxford won twelve including an unbroken run of ten victories between 1976 and 1985.

During 1915 the Maroochy District Patriotic Sports meeting was held with land and water events that included wood chopping, sawing, running and motor boat races. A "Grand Excursion" to Dunethin Lake in aid of the Wounded Soldiers Fund was held in 1916. In the same year, a team of Brisbane swimmers visited Dunethin rock to launch the Maroochy River and District Swimming Club. In 1936 he was a member of the crew of the eight which came fourth representing Great Britain at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin in the Men’s Coxed Eights.

He married Ann Callaway (now Ann, Lady Redgrave) in 1988; an accomplished rower in her own right, she represented Great Britain in the women's eight at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984 and was Chief Medical Officer to the GB rowing team from 1992 to 2001 and since 2009 their first full-time Medical Officer. He is the honorary president of British Rowing. Steven and Ann Redgrave have three children, Natalie, Sophie and Zac. Natalie rowed with the Oxford University Women's Boat Club which won the women's boat race at Henley Boat Races in 2011.

Since 1999 each year in July the Marktheidenfeld Rowing Club has held the "Red Dragon Cup", at which company and club teams take part in dragon boat races in which even costumes are awarded prizes. Map of Dartmouth The Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta takes place annually over three days at the end of August. The event sees the traditional regatta boat races along with markets, fun fairs, community games, musical performances, air displays including the Red Arrows and fireworks. A Royal Navy guard ship is often present at the event. Other cultural events include beer festivals in February and July (the latter in Kingswear), a music festival and an art and craft weekend in June, a food festival in October and a Christmas candlelit event.

The Works Progress Administration installed a paved path and a concrete shoreline on the pond during the Great Depression in the 1930s. One such race in 1937 drew 1,500 observers, such as parks commissioner Robert Moses as well as torpedo experts from the U.S. government.

John Bland (born 23 August 1958) is a British rower. He competed in the men's coxless four event at the 1984 Summer Olympics. He rowed for Oxford in the 1980, 1981 and 1983 Boat Races winning on each occasion. He also represented Great Britain at the 1981 and 1983 World Rowing Championships winning a silver medal in 1981 He was a three time winner at Henley Royal Regatta, including in the Grand Challenge Cup in 1981 and 1983 whilst at Oxford, and the Stewards Challenge Cup in 1984 as a member of Tyne Rowing Club.

Dragon boat races, first organised by the Sing Tao newspaper in 1984, became a feature of the city's calendar. The number of people who visit the various cemeteries for the August Moon and Qing Ming festivals grows annually. In June 1989 Chinese and non-Chinese stood shoulder to shoulder in the rain in Sydney Square listening to speeches in English and Chinese, following what has become known as the Tiananmen Square Massacre in Beijing. Since then, immigration numbers have risen steadily, with greater numbers of Mandarin- speaking people from mainland China joining the older Cantonese-speaking community.

The track has been flooded at least once for boat races to take place within the walls of the track. Modifieds and midgets were a track staple until 1987, when they were completely phased out of weekly racing. Along with the modifieds were a division that lasted from 1982 to 1987, called the mini modifieds. Dominic Venditti had introduced the division formerly known as the all-pro division after a visit to the mid-west, where he received inspiration for a series similar to modern-day super late models, with the intent of replacing the modifieds.

The stampede occurred at the end of the three-day Water Festival to celebrate the end of the monsoon season and the semiannual reversal of flow of the Tonlé Sap river.... Initial reports suggest that festival-goers had gathered on Koh Pich ("Diamond Island"), a spit of land stretching into the Tonlé Sap, to watch boat races and then a concert. Around four million people had attended the festival. It was the third incident in the festival's history resulting in fatalities, though it was by far the worst; five rowers on a boat drowned in 2008, and another drowned in 2009.

He successfully stroked Oxford to victory over Cambridge in the next three University Boat Races (and was also stroke in 1899 when they lost) and in 1898 was made president of the Oxford University Boat Club. After leaving Oxford Gold was made Captain of Leander Club from 1898 to 1900. He became a steward of the Henley Regatta in 1909 and joined its management committee in 1919, significantly helping to put the event onto a sound financial footing. He coached eighteen Oxford crews as well as the Leander VIII which won the 1908 Olympic regatta at Henley.

Races are normally held over a distance of up to 880 yards (800 m) along the bank on a straight reach of the river. Each end of the course is marked by a pair of poles called "ryepecks" which are firmly pushed into the river bed before the race. Races are always one punt against another, and are either singles or doubles races depending on the number of punters in the punts.

British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) is the governing body for university and college sports in the UK. It runs leagues in 16 sports and an annual championship meeting, which in 2011 covered 19 sports. BUCS organization is very different from the USA's NCAA in the sense that BUCS is not competitive to compete in like the NCAA. There were undergraduate boat races in Victorian England, and The Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge is still an annual event. With the rise in popularity of distinctive urban and domestic activities during the Song dynasty, there was a decline in traditional outdoor Chinese pastimes such as hunting, horseback riding, and polo. As a speed boat manufacturer he organised the first red sea rib rally and brought to this event a long list of world class royalty, celebrities, business people and adventurers, and created thereafter a series of events which included the first ever Formula 2 race in the Egyptian Nile, "les 8 heurs du nil". Although regattas are typically amateur competitions, they are usually formally structured events, with comprehensive rules describing the schedule and procedures of the event.

Gung Haggis Fat Choy dragon boat team is dedicated to fun and multiculturalism and hosts the Gung Haggis Fat Choy Robbie Burns Chinese New Year Dinner event, and is coached by GHFC organizer Todd Wong. The dinner event started as a fundraiser for the dragon boat team, and has expanded to include other non-profit causes which organizer Todd Wong is involved in. The team competes at Dragon boat races and festivals in BC, Washington and Oregon. Scioto County is best known for Portsmouth's "River Days" activities that include a parade, a pageant associated with the local high schools, boat races on the Ohio River (in the past), musical performances and a carnival. River Days occurs on Labor Day (the first Monday of September) weekend with the activities beginning on Thursday evening and the parade and pageant on Saturday. The Scioto County Fair is held on the first full week of August of each year. It is one of the largest in the state, drawing approximately 75,000 visitors each year (with the single-day record being 17,000).

The P1 Scottish Grand Prix of the Sea is an annual two day marine motorsport event held in Greenock in Scotland. The event hosts around 30,000 spectators and is free to attend. The lagoon between Orchard Beach and the Westchester border had been popular for regattas, or boat races, for decades, but it was neglected through the 1940s and 1950s. Rocks, weeds, and unwanted cars were tossed into the lagoon regularly. In the centre of the chundan vallom, which was earlier the place of the canon, stand two people who beat the odithatta (fire platforms) with poles and sing the vanchippattu (songs of the boatmen) to maintain the rowing rhythm. While the strongest oarsmen sit at the front to set the pace, the back is managed by six hefty amarackars (helmsmen) who stand and help steer the boat. The person at the highest point of the boat is the chief oarsman. Champakulam Chundan is the winner of several boat races including hatric winner of the Nehru Trophy boat race during 1989, 1990, and 1991.

In recognition of its association with the boat races, the coat of arms which is present upon Barnes Bridge includes a light blue oar (representing Cambridge University) and a dark blue oar (representing Oxford University). During the first half of the twentieth century, it became common for the railway company to sell tickets to race spectators for access to the bridge as a means of generating revenue from the provision of a unique vantage point. However, in recent years, Barnes Bridge has been intentionally closed to pedestrian traffic during the boat race on the grounds of public safety.

The regatta was discontinued but at its replacement, the Thames Boat Races of 1850, he came third in the single sculls race which was a closely contested affair. On 23 August 1853 Messenger rowed against James Candish, who was the Tyne Champion, on the Thames river Putney to Mortlake course (the Championship Course) for a £100 a side. Messenger defeated Candish with great ease by about a boat length and he covered the distance in 24 minutes 26 seconds after having been stopped twice on the course. A return match was arranged and this was raced on the Tyne on 14 March 1854.

103 Koompartoo was later made available for tourist, spectator and concert cruises on the harbour.SS Koompartoo Ferries of Sydney Her wheel houses were raised (flying bridges) in the 1930s to allow her master to see over spectators on the decks. Her roles included service carrying crowds of passengers to the regular Head of the River rowing carnivals and following the sailing boat races that were growing in popularity at the time. This was also the period of the Great Depression and Koompartoo found a new career as a concert boat, a role she filled between 1935 and 1941.

The 2013 race was held on Dorney Lake which had hosted the rowing events of the 2012 Summer Olympics. The Women's Boat Race is a side-by-side rowing competition between Oxford University Women's Boat Club (OUWBC) and the Cambridge University Women's Boat Club (CUWBC) that has taken place since 1927. It was conducted as part of the Henley Boat Races, which for 2013 was hosted at the 2012 Summer Olympics venue of Dorney Lake in Buckinghamshire instead of the traditional straight course at Henley-on-Thames. Strong winds and stream conditions on the River Thames had precipitated the move to the Olympic venue.

Melbourne: Chinese New Year in Chinatown With one of the largest Chinese populations outside of Asia, Sydney also claims to have the largest Chinese New Year Celebrations outside of Asia with over 600,000 people attending the celebrations in Chinatown annually. The events there span over three weeks including the launch celebration, outdoor markets, evening street food stalls, Chinese top opera performances, dragon boat races, a film festival and multiple parades that incorporate Chinese, Japanese, Korean people and Vietnamese performers. More than 100,000 people attend notably the main parade with over 3,500 performers. The festival also attracts international media coverage, reaching millions of viewers in Asia.

This sponsorship was key in enabling the Women's Boat Race to move to the Tideway in 2015. Since the 2012 race, Newton Investment Management has provided equal funding to OUWBC and CUWBC to enable the clubs to employ full time professional coaches and a support team to transition ‘from a student-run club to a pre-elite team’ on their road to the Tideway.

By the 1850s San Gregorio was a booming town, when wealthy San Franciscans would travel to the San Gregorio House by stagecoach to enjoy activities such as fishing, hunting, sea bathing, and boat races. The structure was expanded in the 1850s, to accommodate the crowds and included a saloon with a dance hall, liveryman's cottage, laundry, smoke house, grainery, carriage sheds, power house, water tower, and numerous barns. All of the original structures still stand with the exception of the cookhouse and livery stable. George Washington Tull Carter purchased an existing house in 1865 and added a second floor in order to open a hotel.

Mascot Dock - Patchogue Mascot Dock & Marina are a village marina and dock stretching out into the waters of the Patchogue Bay at the end of South Ocean Avenue,Google maps in Patchogue, Suffolk County, NY. The Patchogue Village marina serves many local village functions, in conjunction with Shorefront Park which is adjacent to the Mascot Dock. There have been numerous events that have used the dock's location, such as fireworks displays and boat races, as well as crabbing and fishing off the long L-shaped dock. They serve the south shore of the central Long Island area with waterfront seating overlooking Great South Bay.

Gas rationing placed a particular burden on power-boat owners who could not get fuel for pleasure craft, which were deemed to be "non-essential" to the war effort. Most owners laid up their boats "for the duration", although a number of power boat owners volunteered themselves and their boats for the local Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla. Sailboats took advantage of the non-rationed zephyrs. Although a number of sailboat races were cancelled because of lack of crew, many of the small boat races were held because the younger sailors were too young for the draft which sent members to war in both the European and Pacific theaters.

The famous New Orleans architect and member of the Southern Yacht Club, Thomas Sully designed the elaborate club house a few years later, and it was built near the old location on Mobile River. The clubhouse was a grand sight viewed from front, and small boat races were held on Mobile River. But when the monster hurricane of July 5, 1916 combined a high tide with south winds, the club was completely destroyed and set many yachts adrift. By then electric streetcars had lured the focus of the city from the downtown waterfront to the parks, theaters, and beaches that line the western shore.

After winning several times the fun team titles some sportsmen decided to do dragon boat racing seriously and to join the canoe club HKC. Merner-Pfeiffer Hall part of the Conservatory of Music, which hosts the yearly Bach Festival April Reign is a series of contests and athletic events where student organizations compete, during the week before finals. Initially, the number of women racing was small, but it soon grew to a similar number as that of the men. By the mid-1990s, the CUCBC was founded to oversee all river regulations, for rowers of both sexes, on the River Cam and to control the bumps races and various other events. This also had the effect that the CUBC and CUWBC were then free to concentrate on The Boat Race and Henley Boat Races respectively.

Putney Bridge Approach was widened in consequence, further encroaching on the churchyard of All Saints Church, Fulham. The stone marking the downstream end of the Championship Course is used for all boat races through Putney in Olympic-class rowing boats. These include the Wingfield Sculls and the UK's main Head of the River Races, just west of the bridge, rather than at the bridge itself, under which the centre of its middle arch would provide an advantage if starting underneath it, as all races are competed with the tide. Putney Bridge is often very busy on Saturdays when Fulham F.C. are playing at home as this is the main way for fans to cross the river.

John Hyrne Tucker Wilson (17 September 1914 – 16 February 1997) was a British rowing champion and Olympic gold medallist. Wilson was born in Bristol, Rhode Island to British parents, and was educated in Texas then sent to England to be educated at Shrewsbury School and Pembroke College, Cambridge. : Journal of Olympic History, Volume 5 No.2 While at Cambridge, he rowed in three successive Boat Races (1934–36) in which Cambridge defeated Oxford. During the 1935 and 1936 races, he rowed alongside Ran Laurie, who became his rowing partner after Cambridge and a lifelong friend. After graduating from University, Wilson took a post as a District Commissioner with the Sudan Political Service, missing an opportunity to participate alongside Laurie in Britain’s Eights boat at the 1936 Olympics.

Hertford College Boathouse at Longbridges on the Isis Hertford College Boat Club is among the leading Oxford college boat clubs: both its women's and men's first boats are in the first division of Torpids and Eights Week, with both M1 and W1 winning "blades" in the 2015 edition of Torpids. The boats and club room are in the Longbridges boathouse on the Isis. With the transition of Magdalen Hall to Hertford College in 1874, the old blue-black of the hall stopped racing in 1873, and the new red-white of the college took to the river in 1875. Within only seven years of its refoundation, the college came Head of the River in the annual college boat races, in 1881.

OUWBC Crest Oxford University Women's Boat Club (OUWBC) is the rowing club for female rowers (and coxes of either sex) who are students at the University of Oxford. The club was founded in 1926 and is now based in Wallingford at the Fleming Boat House, along with OUBC, OUWLRC and OULRC. The training season runs from September through to July, with the major event, the Women's Boat Race against Cambridge University Women's Boat Club (CUWBC), happening in March or April. Up until 2015 the Women's Boat Race had taken place over 2000m as part of the Henley Boat Races on the Henley Reach. In 2015, for the first time, the Women’s Boat Race took place on the 6.8 km Championship Course on the Tideway, and was televised on the BBC alongside the Men’s Boat Race.

During the Florida land boom of the 1920s, Belle Isle and Fisher's nearby Flamingo Hotel were the site of the famous Biscayne Bay Speed Boat Regattas. Fisher had successfully promoted automobile races in Indianapolis, and he used his skills to stage gasoline-powered speed boat races in the smooth waters of Biscayne Bay just south of Belle Isle as a spectacle to attract the wealthy and sophisticated tourists that he was seeking as a target audience for his new exotic vacation destination. In 1942, the University of Miami turned a boat house on the Joseph H. Adams estate into the first "Marine Lab" for the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. Belle Isle was also the site of the All Souls Episcopal Church as late as 1947.

While at Oxford University, Bourne-Taylor was a member of Oxford University Boat Club and took part in the Boat Race four times in five years between 2001 and 2005 (taking a year off to train for the 2004 Summer Olympics). The bay offers various leisure options, with hundreds of vessels of all different types, especially saveiros, schooners, motor boats, jet ski that criss-cross its crystalline waters on maritime excursions to the islands, and boat races. Events and sport activities occur throughout the year, beginning on 1 January, with the Procession of Bom Jesus dos Navegantes greeting the New Year. All Saints' has also been traditionally the venue for rowing contests at the Enseada dos Tainheiros, in Salvador and now the bay is included in the routes of the great international regattas, such as the Ralley Les Iles du Soleil, regatta Hong Kong Challenge and the Expo 98 Round the World Rally, which consider the bay an important stop along the route. The islands of the bay are a separate attraction.

Victory Day (or Otto settembre) is a public holiday celebrated in Malta on 8 September and recalls the end of three historical sieges made on the Maltese archipelago, namely: the Great Siege of Malta by the Ottoman Empire ending in 1565; the Siege of Valletta by the French Blockade ending in 1800; and, the Siege of Malta during the Second World War by the Italian army ending in 1943. This day also coincides with the commemoration of the birth of the Virgin Mary, better known as the Nativity of Mary, which is celebrated in the villages of Senglea, Naxxar and Mellieha in Malta, and Xagħra in Gozo. It is locally known as il-Vitorja (the Victory) and il-Bambina (the Baby). The traditional regatta featuring boat races in the Grand Harbour is held on Victory Day.

In celebration of some of the town's most well-known exports, the Wellesley Apple Butter and Cheese FestivalWellesley Apple Butter and Cheese Festival was first held in 1975, and has been held annually on the last Saturday in September ever since. The festivities include many street market venues, coach rides, remote-controlled boat races, open heritage sites and amusements, horseshoe-pitching contests, guided farm tours, live music, meals that can be purchased on the main street, and a classic car show, all of which now attract thousands of visitors each year. His father was the first Bishop of New Zealand in whose memory Selwyn College, Cambridge was named. Selwyn was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge, graduating in 1866. The 2015 Boat Races took place on 11 April 2015. Held annually, The Boat Race is a side-by-side rowing race between male crews from the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge along a tidal stretch of the River Thames in south-west London. For the first time in the history of the event, the men's, women's and both reserves' races were all held on the Tideway; in the men's reserve race, Cambridge's Goldie faced Oxford's Isis after the women's race, as a preliminary to the main men's race, while the women's reserve race, held the day before, saw Oxford's Osiris race against Cambridge's Blondie. Oxford's women won the first running of the Women's Boat Race on the Tideway, and the 70th overall, by six and a half lengths, to take the overall record in the event to 41–29 in Cambridge's favour.

Children going door to door with paper lanterns on St. Martin's Day in the Netherlands The day is celebrated on the evening of 11 November (the day Saint Martin died) in the Netherlands, where he is known as Sint-Maarten. As soon it gets dark, children up to the age of 11 or 12 (primary school age) go door to door with hand-crafted lanterns made of hollowed-out sugar beet or, more recently, paper, singing songs such as "Sinte Sinte Maarten", to receive candy or fruit in return. In the past, poor people would visit farms on the 11th of November to get food for the winter. In the 1600s, the city of Amsterdam held boat races on the lake IJ. 400 to 500 light craft, both rowing boats and sailboats, took part with a vast crowd on the banks.

Hart was at Peterhouse, Cambridge and rowed in the winning Cambridge boat in the Boat Races in the 1972 and 1973 races, stroking the boat in 1973. In 1972, he partnered David Maxwell to finish eighth rowing at the 1972 Summer Olympics in the coxed pairs event. In 1973 he teamed up with Chris Baillieu in the double scull to win the Double Sculls Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta.Henley Royal Regatta Results of Final Races 1946–2003 Rowing for Leander Club, they won the event again in 1975 and in between he participated in the 1974 World Rowing Championships in Lucerne, competing in the double sculls event with Bailleau, which resulted in winning a bronze medal.. Regatta participants in the 1890s At a public meeting in Henley town hall on 26 March 1839, Captain Edmund Gardiner proposed "that from the lively interest which had been manifested at the various boat races which have taken place on the Henley reach during the last few years, and the great influx of visitors on such occasions, this meeting is of the opinion that the establishing of an annual regatta, under judicious and respectable management, would not only be productive of the most beneficial results to the town of Henley, but from its peculiar attractions would also be a source of amusement and gratification to the neighbourhood, and the public in general." The regatta was first staged in 1839 and proved so successful that it was expanded the next year from one day to two. As the regatta's popularity has grown it has further expanded: to three days in 1886, four days in 1906 and five days in 1986. The regatta has been known as Henley Royal Regatta since 1851, when Prince Albert became the first royal patron.

The Harlem River Speedway in 1903 The Drive originated as the Harlem River Speedway, which started construction in 1894 and opened in July 1898. Originally, the Speedway was for the exclusive use of horse-drawn carriages and those on horseback; bicyclists were specifically excluded, as were sulkies and drays. The Speedway ran from West 155th Street to Dyckman Street, and soon became a tourist destination, where visitors watched carriage races and boat races on the river. Rich New Yorkers used the Speedway to train their horses and size up those of their friends and competitors. In 1919, motorists were allowed on the Speedway, but for normal driving purposes. The route was paved in 1922, and officially renamed the Harlem River Driveway. In 1939, Manhattan Borough President Stanley M. Isaacs unveiled plans to build Harlem River Drive, which was planned as a four-lane road linking the Harlem River Speedway and the East River (now FDR) Drive north of East 125th Street. The initial section of the drive would stretch from 125th to 165th Streets, near where it merged into the speedway.

Prior to World War II and Cold War-era expansions of nearby military bases and defense industries, and white flight from the nearby cities of Hampton and Newport News following the racial integration of schools that rapidly turned the area into a bedroom community, Poquoson was a sleepy rural area with many small family farms, commercial wharves, seafood packing houses, and boat yards that built and repaired log canoes, oyster buy-boats, and Chesapeake Bay deadrise work boats used by the local waterman. The annual Poquoson Seafood Festival which celebrates Poquoson's heritage is the biggest event in Poquoson. Events at the Friday - Sunday festival include work boat races, singers/bands, vendors, food, crafts, children's entertainment, carnival rides, and sometimes even fireworks. The Poquoson Museum, founded in 2003, is located on a 16-acre parcel that contains a circa 1900 farm house, agricultural out buildings, frontage along the marshes of Topping Creek and a country store known as ‘Miss Becky’s Store’ that served local residents for many years.

The name drew a contrast to football haircuts, which had been long since 1889 when Princeton football players began wearing long hair to protect against head injury, thereby starting a trend, not altogether welcome; mop haired football players were frequently caricatured in the popular press.
