In a mesmerizing video posted to Twitter earlier today, FLOTUS takes us on a casual tour of her crimson, topiary-inspired vision: long black coat slung over her shoulders, oxblood opera gloves in hand, she swans through a hallway of blood red cylindrical cones, gazes into a gilded mirror, is watched from above by a bald eagle Christmas tree topper, and admires a wreath made of sharpened "Be Best" pencils.

In fact, in the image above, the blood-red glyph which represents the branch points in the Bandersnatch storyline is identical to a similar symbol that appears prominently in Black Mirror season two's "White Bear" — an episode in which the entire populace was ultimately revealed to be under the control of a TV signal, not unlike the way Stefan himself is under the "control" of the at-home Netflix viewer.

For example, the painting "The Blood of Fafner" (2013) draws on the character of Fafner, a giant who transforms himself into a dragon, in Richard Wagner's epic opera The Ring Cycle, as well as the Norse myth of Fáfnir, the son of a dwarf king who is transformed into a dragon because of his greed; an abstracted figure rendered in blood red is surrounded by a green "wreath" of Dow logos.

Life's certainly an up-and-down, up-and-down sort of affair, although for children the downs seem to come as a surprise—almost as a delight, being so outrageous, so difficult to believe—whereas for us, sitting on the wall, clutching our tumblers, it's the ups that have come to appear a little preposterous, hard to credit; they strike us as a cunning bit of misdirection, rarer than a blood-red moon.

To witness the Queen and members of the royal family, the Prime Minister, and all her living predecessors, the leaders of all the political parties, the leaders of more than a dozen faiths, the armed services and the dozens of commonwealth nations, all coming together on a cold, sunny Sunday morning to lay the blood-red poppy wreaths at the foot of the Cenotaph in Whitehall, is a stark reminder in our tribal times of a shared humanity, a collective community, with common values and purpose.
