The common name "checker barb" (as well as such related names as "checkered barb", "chequer barb" and "checkerboard barb") derives from the black marks on its side similar in appearance to those found on a checkerboard.

A large rostrum or "saw" from a largetooth sawfish with several teeth missing (black marks on ruler are apart) As suggested by the alternative name common sawfish, it was once plentiful, but has now declined drastically leading to it being considered a critically endangered species by the IUCN. The main threat is overfishing, but it also suffers from habitat loss. Both their fins (used in shark fin soup) and "saw" (as novelty items) are highly valuable, and the meat is used as food. Because of the "saw" they are particularly prone to becoming entangled in fishing nets.

A rather irregular narrow black streak runs from the base of the costa very obliquely to the disc and then slightly sinuate through the middle of the disc to the apex, sharply interrupted at two-thirds, with black dots above and below this interruption. There is a short fine black dash at the base beneath this, one on the fold in the middle connected with its lower edge, and one sometimes longer towards the costa before the middle. A series of black marks is found around the posterior part of the costa and termen. The hindwings are light grey, paler towards the base.

The "giants" of the story's title are the humans crewing the spaceship.

Forensic dentist Norman Sperber examined the rope found in his patrol car, and he determined they seemed to match the rope marks around the victim's neck, although Sperber was later barred from testifying about his findings in court. A distinctive and unusual gold rayon fiber—found to have been made using a yellow pigment instead of a dye—found on Knott's dress matched a shoulder patch Peyer wore on his CHP uniform. The Secret World has four main modes of PvP content; The Fusang Projects, a perpetual PvP zone based on capturing and holding "Facilities" against the other two factions, El Dorado, a timed "capture the flag" style match with four "relics" that must be controlled to gain points for the team, Stonehenge, a timed "king of the hill" style three faction match with 5 players per team, and Shambala, a two team faction independent "team deathmatch" type of match. The Secret World PvP awarded "White Marks of Venice" which could be exchanged for "Black Marks of Venice" at an exchange rate of 100 to 1. Currently, however, the game has eliminated PvP specific currency, and PvP minigames now issue Black Bullion and Marks of the Pantheon just the same as dungeons and missions. The only exception for this is the Shambala minigame, which also awards special PvP specific signets that can be bound to gear.
